FEI Signs Off Improved Footing for London 2012 Equestrian Events

Lausanne (SUI), 10 January 2012 – The FEI has today given final sign-off on the footing that will be used for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events at Greenwich Park.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) conducted footing tests at a site near Preston in the north of England on 20 and 21 December 2011. The mix for the footing is now composed of non-waxed sand, felt and fibre.

Testing of the new footing concluded on 21 December when international riders Geoff Billington (Jumping) and Richard Davison (Dressage) rode on the surface, which had been laid on the platform structure that will be used at Greenwich Park next year.

Motivation from Moshi 86, by Jane Savoie

What makes the difference between success and failure? Not reaching your goal is often as simple a matter as giving up too soon.

I’ve seen this over and over in dressage competition. Someone has a bad day in the ring, and they give up in frustration. They get so upset they scratch from the rest of their classes. It may have been a simple mistake, or a forgotten element, or a skill that wasn’t quite ready to be performed for a judge. The fix might be one tiny tweak. But the experience of failing makes some people throw in the towel.

Toughness in the face of adversity is one of the most valuable assets you can cultivate. If you’re not naturally brave or in the habit of pushing through the discomfort of “failure,” you can change this. All you have to do is DECIDE to change. Decide that nothing is going to stop you from your goal! No matter what it is — business, relationships, riding, showing. Make the decision that you’re going to use mistakes and setbacks as your roadmap to success!

Equine Therapy: The Shadow Self, by Claire Dorotik

Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung stressed the importance of becoming aware of the shadow self. According to Jung, the shadow is the unconscious complex characterized by the repressed, denied, or disowned parts of the self. It is, essentially those things that a person does not accept about himself or herself. Further, as this uncomfortable part of the self is often denied, it is also often projected onto others, which according to Jung is why a person should bring the shadow self into the conscious awareness. That is, to avoid projecting it onto others. However, this is clearly more easily said than done, as for some people, the existence of a shadow self alone is itself a scary concept. One can only imagine then the difficulty most therapists face in attempting to help a person accept the unwanted parts of themselves. So just imagine then how this might go in the arena with a 1200 pound animal.

For horses, there is no such thing as a shadow self. There is only the self — as is. There is no such thing as disguised material. Horses simply don’t have the time for this. As the eloquent stress researcher Robert Sapolsky says, “When your insides are hanging out, and the enemy is upon you, it is just not the time to worry about what your friends think of you.” This may seem a bit elementary or even primitive to some, but for a horse, it is daily reality. Survival, even for the domesticated horse, is still a foremost concern. That being said, herd communication among a group of equines must reflect this prominent need to survive. And guess what? Evasive communication just doesn’t cut it. So for a horse, neither does ours.

Wellington, FL (January 9, 2012) – A group of young up-and-coming dressage riders were all smiles during Robert Dover’s Horsemastership Clinic in Wellington when they not only spent a week riding under the best of the best in the dressage world but also rode away with beautiful new halters from Windsor Equestrian.
