Lexington, KY – The United States Equestrian Federation’s Selection Procedures for the 2011 Pan American Games have been approved by the United States Olympic Committee.

Equine Piroplasmosis

Learn about this horse disease and how to prevent it.

The American Quarter Horse Journal — It is a disease that lurks in a horse’s blood, with tiny protozoa attacking red blood cells. Equine piroplasmosis is common in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, including parts of Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, but is considered a foreign disease in the United States, and efforts are underway to keep it that way.

Currently racetracks in 11 states require negative piroplasmosis tests before horses are allowed onto the backside. Beginning July 1, all horses entering the grounds for any AQHA world championship show will also be required to present a negative certificate dated within six months.

“As the industry leader, AQHA needs to be vigilant and establish testing requirements to ensure any case of equine piroplasmosis can’t be traced back to an AQHA event,” said Tom Persechino, AQHA executive director of competition and breed integrity. “We’re encouraging all exhibitors to contact their veterinarians to schedule these tests. If the tests are completed around the second week of July, that horse will be eligible to show at the youth, select and open/amateur world without requiring another test.”

FEI Constitutional Task Force to Identify Optimal Governance Structure

Lausanne (SUI), 13 April 2011 – The FEI Bureau has approved the mandate for a Constitutional Task Force to oversee the establishment of an optimal governance structure for the FEI. The Task Force will present its findings and proposals on restructuring to the 2011 General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro (BRA) in November.

The National Federation-led Task Force will be headed by Akaash Maharaj, Secretary General and CEO of Equine Canada. The four members are César Camargo, President of the Colombian Equestrian Federation; Paul Cargill, President of Equestrian Australia; Kim Gueho, Secretary General of the Mauritian Equestrian Sports Federation and Ulf Helgstrand, President of the Danish Equestrian Federation.

The mandate for the Constitutional Task Force is to seek input from all members of the FEI to drive the effort and dialogue towards an optimal governance structure for the International Federation, with a view to maximising input and buy-in based on the needs of National Federations and stakeholders today and in the future.

The Rolex One to Watch – March 2011

13 April 2011 – The Rolex One to Watch for March 2011 is the American rider, Kirsten Coe. Based in Johnston, South Carolina, USA, the 30-year-old jumped from number 366 to 229 during March – a move up the Rolex Rankings of 137 places.

The Rolex One to Watch is a new initiative which identifies the rider who has made the biggest jump within or into the Top 250 of the Rolex Rankings the previous month.

Kirsten Coe, who grew up on the West Coast, spent much of her childhood in the saddle and her skills were honed from an early age on the Desert Circuit in California.

Coe has had a great start to 2011 and was placed fourth with Vernon G in the Green Cove Springs Welcome CSI in January. During the first week in March, Coe and Tristan teamed up to win the $31,000 HITS Welcome Classic presented by Pfizer Animal Health at Thermal, and the following week, riding Kilkenny Randall Z, she was second in the $200,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix.

Ocala, FL (April 14, 2011) – Fans of United States Combined Driver Chester Weber have the chance to keep voting for Weber by phone or online in order to keep him in the running for America’s Favorite Equestrian. Each vote costs $5 and 100% of the donations will be used to support horse and equestrian charitable causes across the country.

Weber, a member of the winning Silver Medal 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Combined Driving team and the eight-time USEF National Four-In-Hand Champion, has made it through the first round of America’s Favorite Equestrian. Weber was among eight drivers in the Driving category of America’s Favorite Equestrian, but as of March 31, the six drivers with the most votes continue on to Round 2.

The America’s Favorite Equestrian contest is an interactive fund raising effort presented jointly by partnership of The EQUUS Foundation and The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to raise funds to advance the equestrian sport on an annual basis. The contest started with eight equestrians from each discipline: jumping, driving, dressage, eventing, reining, vaulting, endurance, and para-equestrian.

Some people don’t like gray horses. Some people don’t like chestnut horses. There are even a few that don’t like us shiny black horses. Some like the quiet temperament of a quarter horse over the fiery temperament of an Arabian. Some like the excitement of riding an exuberant Trakehner better than the slower paced energy of the Friesian.

Everyone has an opinion. EVERYONE. Even your dog and your horse. So, if your goal is to please everyone, you’re setting yourself up to be very disappointed. It’s simply not possible. Each of us has a different background, a different set of values, and a different way of looking at the world. We each have our own unique “lens” through which we view and interpret what goes on around us. We all gravitate toward the folks that are more like us than different from us, but even those people you feel the most compatible with will have different perceptions and interpretations of their experiences.

So, what should you do about this? What I do is… nothing. The only work I need to do is internal, on my own acceptance of the fact that everyone is going to see things a bit differently. I generally don’t try to change anyone’s opinion unless they ask. I do my best to just let my friends and family be who they are, and allow myself to be true to who I am. For the most part, I am willing to simply agree to disagree.

Submit Your Grant Proposal to USA Equestrian Trust

May 2 Deadline Fast Approaching

April 13, 2011 — Lexington, KY — Grant applications continue to come in to USA Equestrian Trust (USAET) but there’s still time to submit a proposal.  All not-for-profits are invited to apply by going to the web site at http://www.trusthorses.org/grant/request.html to fill out the online grant application.  The deadline is May 2nd at 5 PM EST.

Past recipients of grants include those doing equine health research, equestrian land conservation, and educational programs.  The Trust welcomes applications for need-based and means-tested worthy equestrian projects and encourages applicants to detail those in their applications.

Funds available for grants include $77,000 reserved for Hunter and Jumper not-for-profit purposes or programs in California and Nevada. Applicants for this fund should make clear their intention to apply for funds available from this specific reserve.

“Whether you have a small project or larger goal, if you are a not-for-profit it’s worth the effort to apply,” commented Alan F. Balch, USAET President.

Ali Wolff Awarded 2011 Maxine Beard Award by USET Foundation

Gladstone, NJ – April 12, 2011 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that Ali Wolff of New Albany, OH, has been selected as the 2011 recipient of the Maxine Beard Show Jumping Rider Award. Wolff received the Maxine Beard Award trophy at the American Invitational on April 9, 2011, at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. The selection was based on Wolff’s competitive record and future potential to represent the United States in international competition. The award provides Wolff the opportunity to be credentialed and travel with the U.S. delegation to the 2011 FEI World Cup Finals in Leipzig, Germany, from April 27 – May 1.  She will observe the operations of an international championship, including the stabling area, veterinary inspections and schooling, and will walk the courses with the U.S. Show Jumping Coach, George H. Morris.

At the young age of 21, Ali Wolff has already accomplished a great deal as an up-and-coming equestrian. Her biggest win came in 2010 when she won the Individual Gold medal at the North American Junior Young Rider Championships. After holding the 23rd position she quickly climbed the ranks throughout the competition, eventually capturing the top prize.

“I didn’t expect much going into the second round, only to support my team and try to get a team medal,” said Wolff. “Things started shaping up from there and it’s just such a great award to win, it is still sinking in. I am still excited about it even though it was almost a year ago!”

April Update: 2011 Adequan FEI North American Junior/Young Rider Championships Presented by Gotham North

Lexington, KY – Less than four months before the Opening Ceremonies for the 2011 Championships and planning is already well underway.  With the addition of Endurance, we will be utilizing a new part of the Kentucky Horse Park; the Endurance Base Camp will set up on Walt Robertson Way, across from the Secretariat Center. The rest of the venue is looking really good, having benefited from the overhaul which corresponded with last fall’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Qualifying is of course well underway for most disciplines. It’s a good time to make sure all your FEI numbers are up-to-date and your passport is valid. The Chef’s Manual has some guidelines and information regarding these things.

Richard Spooner & Lady Like Prove Victorious in $50,000 Vita Flex Match Race at FTI WEF

Wellington, FL (April 12, 2011) – During an exciting night under the lights in the International Arena at the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, Richard Spooner and Lady Like cleared the Vita Flex oxer in winning time during the final phase of the $50,000 Vita Flex Match Race to take home the winning ribbon as well as the Vita Flex Victory Pass Award. The $50,000 Vita Flex Match Race featured five rounds of races with riders competing head-to-head in competition over mirror-image courses.

Spooner was thrilled with his victory and said he always enjoys competing in match races. There were 32 combinations in the $50,000 Vita Flex Match Race, and Spooner won against Karina Aziz, Todd Minikus, Paul O’Shea and Jonathan McCrea.  He praised Lady Like, a 1999 Holsteiner mare, and said she was quick and careful over the five rounds which included beating out Daniela Cordero and T Cavalier in the final round.

Spooner’s $50,000 Vita Flex Match Race victory also helped him take home the Vita Flex Victory Pass Award. Spooner was pleased with both wins and thrilled to win a competition that offered such a large monetary prize. Spooner compared the $50,000 Vita Flex Match Race to horse racing and said that the crowd was really behind the event.
