This will include pending violations.

This policy is effective immediately.

Plenty Left to Play For in 2016 Racing

Despite just a few months remaining of what has already been an exhilarating year in the world of horse racing, a number of high profile races are yet to take place, with iconic events on either side of the Atlantic set to have punters meticulously deliberating over the horse racing odds among bookmakers. Starting off this weekend, the Sodexo Gold Cup at Ascot kicks off the chasing season in style, while the upcoming Breeders’ Cup and King George VI Chase are certain to bring the curtain down on this year’s action with a bang.

Nick Williams-trained Tea For Two is currently leading the way in the horse racing odds at bookmakers Betway for the Sodexo Gold Cup. After winning on two of his three starts in novices last season, impressive performances in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton, as well as the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase, have led to good to firm going odds for the seven-year-old. Competition for Tea For Two is most likely to come in the shape of Paul Nicholls’ Saphir du Rheu and Southfield Theatre, both of whom are given odds of 7/1 going into the weekend. Paul Nicholls will be heading to Ascot this weekend in the hope of finally claiming victory in one of the only high profile events in which he is yet to win.

Meanwhile, in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, California Chrome heads a field of 14 horses, with Arrogate, Effinex and Nyquist all in contention for the race on November 6. The 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is undoubtedly the favourite in the build up to the famous race, with Betway offering horse racing odds of just 2/1 for the Art Sherman-trained five-year-old. A total of 185 entries have been put forward for events at Santa Anita, the fact that the Breeders’ Cup Classic has seen an increase in prize money to $6 million is only likely to increase the attention placed upon the meeting. The Breeders’ Cup Mile, Sprint and Juvenile are all likely to be as competitive as ever, with thousands of punters heading to California for the festivities.

Finally, the King George VI on Boxing Day at Kempton is set to provide horse racing enthusiasts with a final chance of the year to back their favourites, with the Willie Mullins trained Vautour currently out in front in the horse racing odds from Betway. The likes of Cue Card and Douvan are certain not to make things easy for the 2016 Ryanair Chase winner, however.

A homebred racing for the Meneely family’s S-Quarter K LLC of Kennewick, Washington, Heza Dasha Fire was undefeated in five starts during the year. He began with a victory in the Golden State Derby (G2), followed by a win in the Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1). In a climactic finish on the year, the Jose Antonio Flores trainee took on both older horses and the classic 440-yard distance for the first time and won the Champion of Champions (G1) impressively. Ridden by Cruz Mendez in all his starts, he won every race by daylight and earned $726,432.

Sired by Walk Thru Fire and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Dasha Freda, Heza Dasha Fire was also the champion 2-year-old gelding in 2014 and has a career record of 11 wins in 12 starts and career earnings of $1,689,388.

S-Quarter K also celebrates as the champion breeders, and his half-brother, Ima Fearless Hero, was named the champion 2-year-old gelding.

Two industry leaders were also recognized for their work in the industry over the past year.

Texas Quarter Horse Association Executive Director Val Clark was honored with the Mildred N. Vessels Special Achievement Award for her work in supporting the Texas horse industry and the racing industry as a whole. Clark is a huge ambassador, and her work affects everything from youth programs to Texas-bred race payouts to legislative efforts.

AQHA Past President Johnny Trotter was awarded the Gordon Crone Special Achievement Award. Trotter works tirelessly as one of the country’s largest feedlot owners, horse breeder, community leader and philanthropist. His many accomplishments in the industry, including his recent stint on the AQHA Executive Committee, has made the industry a better place.

Jayson Jackson Joins AQHA Team

American Quarter Horse Association, April 3, 2015 – Many people in the American Quarter Horse industry know his voice, whether it’s from his many hours at the microphone during the American Quarter Horse Association world championship shows or while reading racing pedigrees at racing auctions. But now people in the American Quarter Horse racing industry will get to know Jayson Jackson as he helps them market their farms, stallions, racetracks and other interests by joining AQHA as an outside account executive.

“We are really excited to have Jayson team with our many racing properties and help us sell their value to the people involved in American Quarter Horse racing,” said AQHA Manager of Business Development Doug Hayes. “Jayson’s outgoing personality and his love of racing will help him promote our products and help our members market their interests in American Quarter Horse racing through AQHA’s properties.”

Jackson was born in central Texas and now resides in Bixby, Oklahoma with his wife, Becky, and their four children. Growing up in rural Texas, it was natural for Jackson to develop a love for the horse industry. His family vacationed in Ruidoso, New Mexico, home to the All American Futurity, which helped develop his appreciation for sprint racing.

In addition to his gigs behind the mic, Jackson has trained, bred and sold horses throughout his life. He reads pedigrees at Heritage Place Sale Co. in Oklahoma City and at many other major horse sales across the country.

Today Jackson still trains a few horses, manages a group of stallions and mares, and understands the value of good marketing.

“I hope to demonstrate to people that AQHA’s line-up of digital and print products for racing are great ways to reach existing and new customers,” Jackson said. “I am excited to really get to know people in the racing industry and help them with their advertising and marketing needs.”

Jackson, who will work from the road and from his home in Bixby, will begin calling on customers immediately.

Feature Hero Wins All American Derby

American Quarter Horse Association, September 1, 2013 – Reliance Ranches LLC’s Feature Hero won the September 1 All American Derby (G1) with a strong late charge. The race offered a $2,809,784 purse, which is the richest ever offered in the history of American Quarter Horse racing.

Racing in front of a crowd of 21,857 — the largest crowd ever for a non-All American Futurity day — Feature Hero was sent off at 24-1 by the bettors, broke well from Post 7 and was fourth early. The race’s fastest qualifier, Bon Accord, was on the early lead from Post 1, but was caught to finish a neck back. Feature Hero covered the 440 yards in :21.560. Point Break Dash finished third, and was followed by Vancouver Moon, Wonderboy, Elisas Secret, Wicked Courage, Louisana Corona, Tayte Me Down and The Magic Dash.

Feature Hero was ridden by Jimmy Dean Brooks and trained by Eddie Willis. Last year, the black gelding finished fourth in Carters Cookie’s Rainbow Futurity (G1). Earlier this year, he finished second in Brace For Bernal’s $253,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby (R), and then had a rough trip in the Jack Brook Stakes (RG3). His race record stands at four wins, three seconds and three thirds from 14 starts.

The $1,180,110 winning purse boosted Feature Hero’s earnings to $1,306,638.

Feature Hero qualified to the Derby through a second-place finish to Louisana Corona in their trial, with a :21.276 time, which was the 10th and final qualifying time. Feature Hero paid $49.80 to win.

“We believed in this horse and are so proud of him and Eddie,” said co-owner Micah McKinney. “We were not concerned that he was the 10th fastest qualifier. This is a thrill of a lifetime.”

Reliance Ranches is a family-owned business based out of Llano, Texas, run by the McKinney family. It includes Gary and his wife Shiela; son Micah and his wife, Leslie; and daughter M’Lissa Schoening and her husband, Jeremy. The family has an oil-gas business, but has always enjoyed horses and the agricultural lifestyle.

“We started running horses about nine years ago,” said Micah in an interview prior to the race. “We were visiting one day – my dad and my wife and I – and one of us said, why don’t we go buy a racehorse? We looked at each other and said, we don’t know anything about racehorses, but we can try to figure it out.”

The family did just that, and has become involved with numerous aspects of the racing industry. They race mostly Quarter Horses, and own a broodmare band of about 20 mares, including the likes of champion Spit Curl Diva ($829,353), Grade 1-placed Back In The Pack ($131,831) and stakes winner Illegal Fireworks ($181,847), among others, and raise about 20-25 foals per year.

The McKinneys are learning very fast – in addition to Feature Hero, they also have freshman star Coronado Cartel ($314,348) and distaffer Cruzin The Wagon ($336,869) among those carrying their colors.

Feature Hero was a $40,000 purchase from the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, and attracted their interest and that of Willis first because of the bloodline cross between Corona Chick (dam of his sire Valiant Hero) and Feature Mr Jess (sire of dam Illegal Feature), and then because he was a nice individual.

The gelding was bred in Oklahoma by Lana Merrick and Kent Jackson.

He is by the third-year sire Valiant Hero ($668,633), who won the 2006 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) and the 2007 Heritage Place Derby (G2). From 186 starters in three crops raced, Valiant Hero is represented by 110 winners, including 15 stakes winners and the earners of more than $6 million. Valiant Hero also is the sire of tomorrow’s All American Futurity (G1) qualifier Houdini.

Feature Hero is the first winner from three starters out of the winning Feature Mr Jess mare Illegal Feature ($23,410). His second dam, Illegally Special, was second in Quik Jolla’s 2003 West Texas Futurity (G1).

Feature Hero also represents a very important industry movement of horsemen speaking out against the use of performance-enhancing medications. Micah and Leslie founded Racing Free, a rapidly-growing industry alliance of owners, breeders and other horsemen dedicated to eliminating the use of illegal performance-enhancing medications.

Racing Free encourages the elimination of such medications by offering a positive way for the industry to speak out against the practice, as well as providing rewards to enrolled members. Seventeen of the 20 finalists in the All American Futurity and Derby – including Feature Hero – are Racing Free horses. Owners and breeders can enroll horses in the Racing Free program, and when their horses win races with clean drug tests, can earn money back.

“We are very proud of the fact that we have so many owners in the industry willing to stand up against the use of performance-enhancing drugs,” Micah said.

Feature Hero is not only racing free – but he’s racing fast and racing rich, and has raced into the history books.
