GEORGETOWN, KY — OCTOBER 28, 2011 — On Wednesday October 27 Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, happily welcomed GR1-winner and top sire You and I.  The stallion arrived from Washington state and will now be permanently pensioned at the farm.

Woodstead Farm in Chehalis, WA, where he most recently stood stud, donated the 20-year-old son of Kris S to Old Friends.

Campaigned by prominent owner Edmund A. Gann and legendary trainer Bobby Frankel, You and I (Kris S – La Chaposa, by Ups) won 6 of 16 starts including the GR2 Cowdin stakes as a 2-year-old.  The following year he set a track record in the GR3 Riva Ridge Stakes, running the 7 furlongs in 1:20.33. At 4 You and I finally earned his GR 1 capturing the 1995 Metropolitan Handicap and later that year the GR 2 Brooklyn H. His career earnings totaled $701, 235.

During his stallion career You and I sired 15 stakes winners, most notably the five-time GR1-winning filly You.

Owner Assistance Program Capable of Rescuing Thousands of Horses from Neglect This Winter

A pilot horse owner assistance program operated last winter by three independent nonprofit equine rescue sanctuaries in the Pacific Northwest had a 100 percent success rate in keeping horses in safe homes with financially struggling but committed owners and is ready to be expanded nationwide.

Project Safety Net for Horses has the potential of saving literally thousands of horses from neglect, abandonment, premature euthanasia or the brutality of equine slaughter for a minimal investment per animal, according to Allen Warren of the Horse Harbor Foundation (HHF), who developed and implemented the innovative program along with two other horse rescuers, Sara Penhallogen and Janean Doezal, in response to sanctuary capacity being at or beyond capacity in their three-county area on the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas across the Puget Sound from Seattle.

“In this economy when millions of Americans, including many good longtime horse owners, are struggling just to put food on their own tables and pay the mortgage, many who love their animals and have always provided good care find themselves in a  terrible dilemma,”  Warren states.

Get the VIP Treatment at the KWPN Stallion Show

Registration Closes October 31

Sutherlin, OR — What could be more exciting than private tours of some of the finest barns in the Netherlands, a VIP seat with English translation at the 2012 KWPN Stallion Show and the opportunity to personally interact with some of the sport’s biggest luminaries? If talking horses for a week sounds like fun, you won’t want to miss the 2012 KWPN-NA Annual Meeting, held January 29 – February 5 in the Netherlands and centered around the KWPN Stallion Show. This event is the largest of its kind, with more than 25,000 spectators descending on ‘s Hertogenbosch to experience the excitement of top-level sport and the introduction of the biggest new equine stars.

Julie Ballard Haralson has attended three KWPN stallion shows over the past 10 years. “I love every bit of it,” she recalled. “The KWPN educational seminar for foreign visitors; the auction; the young jumping horses; standing within three feet of the most famous horses and riders in the world and watching them warm-up for their classes; trying to guess the judges’ scores; visiting the sale horses at their stalls; shopping; seeing old friends; shopping some more, and lots of laughs!” Haralson, of Newnan, GA, bred three horses that were awarded 2011 KWPN-NA Top Five Awards. One of her favorite memories of the Stallion Show was in 2010 when Edward Gal rode both Totilas and Gribaldi. Who knows which international superstars will make the 2012 edition an event to remember?

You Can Stop Equine Bleeding; Healthy Blood Pressure Is the Key

Most evidence indicates EIPH in horses is caused by extra high blood pressure in the pulmonary circulation during exercise causing capillaries to rupture, vein remodeling and further damage when blood leaks into healthy lung tissue.  Now there’s an effective, natural treatment that can restore healthy blood pressure and prevent bleeding completely: an electrolyte-balancing patch marketed under the trade name “Equiwinner”.

Mesa, AZ (Oct. 25, 2011) – Bleeding in horses (Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage, EIPH) is now widely accepted as being associated with extra high blood pressure in the pulmonary circulation when the horse is under exertion[1].  Bleeding, and its consequences, not only affects performance negatively, it is a risk to the horse’s health and general well-being and should not be ignored.

In addition, researchers at Michigan State University believe that every time a horse exercises, not just during a race, the pressure goes up in its lungs enough to stretch veins, causing the veins to remodel.   Severe remodeling leads to rerouting of blood to nearby areas thus raising the pressure there.

Final Olympic Dressage Team Qualifier Begins on 28 October

Lausanne (SUI), 27 October 2011 – The last Dressage team qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games will begin this Friday, 28 October. The qualifier, which will be run at two separate venues, is open to teams from the FEI Olympic Groups F (Africa and Middle East) and G (South East Asia and Oceania).

Due to quarantine restrictions, the qualifier will be held in two parts, one in each hemisphere, as riders and horses from Olympic Groups F and G are based in both Australasia and Europe. The first part will take place in Sydney (AUS) on 28 October; the second part will be held in Ermelo (NED) on 2 November.

The same judges will be used at both legs of the regional qualifier. The panel will be FEI 5* judges Stephen Clarke (GBR), who will also be the President of the Ground Jury at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Gotthilf Riexinger (GER) and Susan Hoevenaars (AUS), plus FEI 4* judges Mariëtte Sanders-van Gansewinkel (NED) and Raphaël Saleh (FRA).

Three nations – Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa – will be seeking Olympic qualification. The two best placed teams overall will join Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the USA, which have already qualified.

Ocala, FL (October 27, 2011) – Combined Driver Chester Weber, the eight-time USEF National Four-In-Hand Combined Driving Champion, is donating a sterling silver trophy to the winner of the USEF National Championship Combined Driving Single Horse. Entitled the “Jamaica Perpetual Trophy,” the trophy honors Weber’s legendary equine partner Jamaica who was named the 2008 USEF Horse of the Year. The Jamaica Perpetual Trophy will be awarded at the Katydid CDE held November 4th through 6th in Aiken, South Carolina.

Weber, who has made tremendous contributions to the sport of combined driving, said he is thrilled to be donating the trophy. “Jamaica is retired now and living happily at my farm in Ocala, but he will forever be a horse that stands out in my career for his desire to lead my team and win,” Weber said, adding that Jamaica is now 20 years old. “Although Jamaica never competed as a single horse, he had the honor of being the only Four-In-Hand horse ever singled out to win the USEF Horse of the Year title. Jamaica’s fame really helped to promote the sport of combined driving over the years and I am pleased that his contribution will carry on in the form of this trophy.”
