Audi, Piaget Begin Second 26-Goal Tournament USPA Piaget Gold Cup Thursday

WELLINGTON, FL – March 5, 2013 — With the C. V. Whitney Cup in the books, the second 26 high-goal tournament gets under way Thursday with three games in the USPA Piaget Gold Cup.

Grand Champions Polo Club-based pro teams Audi and Piaget are among favorites in the 11-team tournament, the second jewel of America’s Triple Crown of polo.

It is the sixth consecutive year, Piaget, the luxury Swiss watchmaker, will sponsor the tournament at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

There are three brackets of play with all eight of the world’s 10-goal players competing.

Audi opens play on Thursday against new team Zorzal at 2 p.m.

Audi features 10-goaler Gonzalito Pieres, 8-goaler Nico Pieres, 7-goaler Jeff Hall, one of the highest ranked U.S. players, and team captain Marc Ganzi, rated at one goal.

Zorzal, one of two new teams in the tournament, has 6-goaler Fred Mannix, 6-goaler Jason Crowder, 7-goaler Marianito Obregon and 7-goaler Mariano Gonzalez.

Audi’s tournament bracket includes Coca-Cola and Mt. Brilliant.

Other Thursday games are Valiente vs. Mt. Brilliant at 10 a.m. and Zacara vs. Coca-Cola at 4 p.m.

Piaget opens play on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Lechuza Caracas.

Piaget, one of only two teams with two 10-goalers, features 10-goalers Miguel Astrada and Sapo Caset, 6-goaler Nacho Badiola, making his 26-goal debut at IPC at age 23, and team captain Melissa Ganzi.

“Piaget is a very good team,” Caset said. “We know we are going to play better than we did in the Whitney Cup. We have a good bracket and we had a week to get ready for the Gold Cup. It’s going to be a great tournament.”

Said Piaget coach Joey Casey, “We got a really good draw, so we’re happy.”

Piaget’s tournament bracket includes Lechuza Caracas, ERG and Orchard Hill.

The other Saturday game is ERG against Orchard Hill at 4 p.m.

Last year’s Piaget Gold Cup champion Valiente II is not competing since team captain Robert Jornayvaz returned to his classes at University of Virginia this past fall. His father Bob Jornayvaz is fielding a team that includes 10-goalers Adolfo Cambiaso and Pelon Stirling, two members of last year’s champion team.

First played in 1974, the 26-goal USPA Gold Cup has been played at various polo clubs but found a home at IPC in 2007.

First introduced at Oakbrook Polo Club in Illinois, it then headed north to Milwaukee Polo Club in 1975 and remained there until 1978. After moving south in 1979, the Gold Cup continued a 17-year stretch at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club and moved to Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Polo & Sports Club in 1996. In 2002, the Gold Cup headed north to Greenwich Polo Club where play resumed until 2004. Aiken, S.C. then hosted the Gold Cup in 2005 and 2006.

When the USPA awarded IPC the Gold Cup in 2007, the International Polo Club Palm Beach, home of the 26-goal C. V. Whitney Cup Tournament and U.S. Open Championship, sealed its place in history as host of all three legs of the Triple Crown.

Piaget is saluting IPC’s tenth anniversary with the launch of its new luxury Polo FortyFive Black watch which will join their successful collection of polo watches first introduced in the late 1970s.

Sons of the Wind Farm Announces 2013 Tour Dates

Merrimac, MA – March 5, 2013 – Sons of the Wind School of Equestrian Arts will be showcasing the talent of their Lusitano mounts throughout the country during the month of April at multiple events. In additional to conducting informational clinics, Sons of the Wind will be performing a Quadrille and athletic movements including Airs Above the Ground for those in attendance.

The dates for the 2013 tour include:

April 5-7: Cornell University (hosted by CAYUGA-DCT)
April 11-14: Equine Affaire Ohio
April 18-21: Midwest Horse Fair, WI
April 26-28: Minnesota Horse Expo

The Lusitano was best known for its amazing athleticism as a loyal war horse, and then as a brave, bold mount in the bullring. Today, the modern Lusitano has found its way in to many disciplines including dressage. During the tour, Sons of the Wind will teach guests about the Lusitanos’ history, and also perform a traditional Quadrille. Using four talented Lusitano horses, the riders will perform a beautiful dressage test in sync with music and each horse. All of the horses and riders will be wearing traditional Portuguese attire and tack.

The clinics conducted at Cornell University and the Midwest Horse Fair will include how to develop the strength of your performance horse through the Pendulum of Elasticity, how simple exercises such as leg yield lead can lead to pirouettes and changes, and the importance of strength training.

During Equine Affair and the Minnesota Horse Expo, the clinics hosted by the Sons of the Wind will focus on long-lining, lateral work, and tempi changes, as well as how and why to introduce the piaffe/passage progression early in a horses training.

These clinics will give riders and trainers’ valuable insight and knowledge in classical dressage training that they can apply at home. Sons of the Wind will be able to answer questions and guide guests through the exercises at each event during the tour. These clinics will provide invaluable information that will assist horse and rider as they progress and expand their dressage knowledge.

Roffman and Uruguai Take Interagro Lusitanos High Score Award at Florida Dressage Classic CDI

Wellington, FL (March 4, 2013) – Caroline Roffman and the Lusitano stallion Uruguai were in the ribbons this weekend, as they scored an impressive 66.477% in the FEI Prix St. Georges to take the Interagro Lusitanos High Score Lusitano Award during the Florida Dressage Classic CDI, which is the second CDI of the 2013 Adequan Global Dressage Festival. The pair was presented with a beautiful black halter with silver accents and an engraved plate for their prize. The stunning black Lusitano stallion, known around the barn as Alejandro, is owned by Robinson Lusitanos of Louisiana.

The 11-year-old black stallion demonstrated the elegant assets of power and precision that have made the breed so popular for dressage. “He is kind and willing, and always ready to take you down the centerline,” Roffman said of the stallion. “He is easy to ride, and a great match for any rider, of any level.”

Robinson Lusitanos, one of the largest Lusitano breeders in the United States, began its breeding operation that features mostly Interagro Lusitanos from Brazil, purchased and imported under the guidance of Interagro’s US Sales Director, Peter Van Borst. Uruguai’s studmates include the notable Maverick Interagro and Pitagoras Interagro.

Devin Ryan and Calissandro Win the $35,000 CWD Grand Prix to Close Out Week IV in Gulfport

Gulfport, Mississippi (March 4, 2013) – CWD sponsored rider Devin Ryan from Long Valley, New Jersey, aboard his own Calissandro, won the $35,000 CWD Grand Prix yesterday at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Calissandro is a nine year old American-bred Holsteiner by Conejo purchased as a two year old by Ryan. Ryan has trained and shown the horse through the Young Jumper program and has developed Calissandro from the ground up. “I think it is important that the horse trusts his rider, and Calissandro and all of my horses have a great trust of me. I have done all of their training and showing and that gives them a lot of confidence.”

Twenty four horses attempted the grand prix course designed by internationally known designer Steve Stephens, but only five would return for the jump-off, of which two rides belonged to Ryan, two rides belonged to Theo Genn of Lebanon, Ohio, and one ride belonged to Bryn Sadler of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“The course was very technical,” said Stephens. “I was hoping for six clean, so I’m happy that I got 5,” he added. The 9 a and b combination had a liverpool on the back end and saw many dropping rails. “I jump a lot of liverpools with my horses and use it in their training, so I didn’t have a problem with it,” commented Ryan.

Theo Genn riding Paradox, owned by Thomas Bruinsma, was the first to go clean with a time of 76.534 seconds. Devin Ryan, aboard Roman Saluut ***, confirmed there would be a jump-off and turned in a clean first round effort in 78.340 seconds. Bryn Sadler of Santa Fe, New Mexico challenged the men and secured her ticket to jump off after turning in the fastest, clean first-round effort with a time of 72.479 seconds aboard Bon Giorno, owned by Showcase 81 LLC. Theo Genn then returned to the field, this time with Bridlebourne Stables LLC’s Winchester, to turn in a clean round of 75.347 seconds. Ryan was last to go of the twenty four trips and returned with his fourth mount, Calissandro, riding the first round clean in a time of 78.575 seconds.

Genn, aboard Paradox, was first to go in the jump off and had one rail down at the first fence and the last leaving them with 8 faults in a time of 42.199 seconds. The pair would finish in fifth overall. Next to go was Ryan, in the irons on his own Roman Saluut***, but with a rail down on the final obstacle, would finish with four faults in a time of 42.926 seconds, placing them in fourth position overall. Next to go was Sadler and Bon Giorno from New Mexico, who turned in a clear round in a time of 47.371 seconds to the cheers of the crowd. Genn, rising to the challenge, returned to the ring, this time aboard Bridlebourne Stables LLC’s Winchester. The pair went fast and clean in a time of 43.728 seconds and looked to take the class until Ryan returned to the ring on his own Calissandro. The pair went clean and beat Genn’s time by more than two seconds with his own 40.591 seconds, securing the win and leaving Genn and Winchester in second place and Sadler and Bon Giorno in third.

Obelix, owned and ridden by Alison Lindsay of Southlake, Texas, finished the first round in a time of 79.632 seconds and with one time fault, received sixth place honors. Four faults and a time of 72.702 seconds would put Wilhelm Genn of Lebanon, Ohio and his own Happy Z in seventh place. Eighth place was awarded to Nepal, owned and ridden by Jay Land of Alpharetta Georgia. The pair received four jump faults and a time of 72.866 seconds. H.J. El Magnifico, owned and ridden by Eduardo Braun of Bend, Oregon, finished in ninth with a time of 73.700 seconds and four faults. Tenth was awarded to Devin Ryan and Eagle Valley Partners, LLC’s Zosja after turning in a four fault first round effort in a time of 73.741 seconds. Eleventh went to Holly Shepherd of Great Bay, Alabama in the irons aboard Loretta Patterson’s Triompf after turning in a four fault first round effort in a time of 73.935 seconds. Wilhelm Genn and his own Cookie Monster wrapped the class up with a time of 76.971 seconds and four faults.

The 30th Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W Delights Competitors and Crowd

Loxahatchee, FL – March 5, 2013 – Sunny skies, a convivial atmosphere and top-notch dressage performance highlighted the 30th anniversary of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W February 28 – March 3. Seasoned international competitors and young rising stars alike came out to vie for victory at the historic event.

An enthusiastic crowd came out to cheer riders on at the International Horse Sport (IHS) Champions Park at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee, FL. While battling it out in the show ring, riders kept the mood light between tests, enjoying the support of the crowd and applauding their fellow competitors as they entered the ring. Entertaining interludes, including a Macarena tribute to retiring FEI Judge Axel Steiner and a stick horse appearance in the Grand Prix Freestyle awards ceremony, offset the fierce competition at the Derby.

Lars Petersen and Mariett distanced themselves from the field in the FEI Grand Prix classes, winning both Friday’s Grand Prix and Sunday’s Grand Prix Freestyle by convincing margins. They began the weekend by scoring 72.745% to take the Grand Prix, besting second-place finishers Shelly Francis and Doktor by three percentage points. David Marcus and Don Kontes took third in the competitive class of 15 entrants.

The Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday featured standout musical performances by an elite group of riders, several of whom were coming off top finishes on the South Florida winter dressage circuit. Petersen and Mariett looked like they had the win wrapped up as they coasted through their circus-music themed routine, though their victory was briefly in question when they strayed from their set choreography in the middle of their ride. Petersen stayed cool under pressure and improvised a way to get back on track.

“I was very happy with the horse,” Petersen said after his ride. “I had a little mistake in my choreography, and I did a little bit of taking my own line in the middle of it. I thought about the jumping riders, but otherwise I was very happy with my horse today.”

Marcia Pepper, who co-owns Mariett with Petersen, explained that they are giving the 15-year-old Danish Warmblood mare the time she needs to mature and progress. “We’ll see how it develops,” she said. “There has never been a plan. Ever. We’re just taking it slowly.”

Shelly Francis and Doktor repeated their second-place effort in the Grand Prix to take the red ribbon in the Freestyle, while Mikala Gundersen and My Lady placed third.

Mette Rosencrantz and Finally put together a fluid, consistent test to lock up the title in Saturday’s Grand Prix Special, improving markedly after their 14th place in the Grand Prix. Evi Strasser rode Action Tyme to a second-place finish in the Special, while Cheryl Meisner and Tango took third.

“I think I did a helluva good job!” Rosencrantz exclaimed after her win. “The other day I had a problem from the warm-up to the ring, but today I thought, ‘I’ve got nothing to lose.’ I think there’s a lot of things I could do better, but it was a good test and I was really proud of him.”

Kimberly Herslow and Rosmarin established themselves over the course of the weekend as ones to watch in the small tour division. They posted three over-70 scores to rack up two wins and a second place against a tough field of accomplished riders. They scored 70.789% for the win in what was only their third Prix St. Georges to date and earned 71.650% to take home victory in Sunday’s Intermediaire I Freestyle, their debut freestyle in competition. Caroline Roffman and Her Highness O edged them out in Saturday’s Intermediaire I, scoring 71.211% to Herslow’s 70.868%.

Sunday’s program featured the presentation of The Dressage Foundation’s Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize to Sharon McCusker. Adrienne Lyle, the other recipient of the award, was competing in California and could not be present. Carol Lavell, husband Tom Lavell, Show Manager Noreen O’Sullivan, and The Dressage Foundation Board of Directors members Michael Poulin and Karin Reid Offield were on hand to congratulate McCusker on the Prize.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to go and train and compete in Europe and now that dream has come true,” McCusker commented. “I cannot thank the Foundation enough for this opportunity.”

Lavell noted that her own challenges during her competitive career, and the support she received that allowed her to train and compete at the highest level, inspired her to found the Prize. “The Award is a way for me to follow my philosophy, which is ‘What goes around should come back around,'” she explained.

The Palm Beach Dressage Derby marked the last FEI show of Judge Axel Steiner’s illustrious career. Steiner received his first national judges’ license in 1968 and attained Official (FEI-O, now designated as FEI 5*) status in 1988. He has judged at the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and World Cup Finals, as well as other world-class competitions. Steiner is a faculty member of USDF’s “L” program, serves as a judge instructor and examiner, and is on the USEF Dressage Committee.

A group of competitors, owners and spectators staged a flash mob to celebrate Steiner’s retirement from FEI judging. They danced and sang to the Macarena, changing the lyrics to “Hey, Axel Steiner!” Steiner was initially surprised and then joined in with a smile, accepting congratulations for his long years of distinguished service.

The Palm Beach Dressage Derby was a fitting stage for Steiner’s swan song as an FEI judge, as it played a crucial role in the development of his judging career. Over his decades of involvement with the Derby, he benefited from collaboration with other eminent international judges.

“It was my first exposure to judging with European judges,” Steiner recalled. “This year is very important for me. I have many, many memories.”

“The Derby was the premier show in Florida and even today it probably is still one of the most influential,” he added. “What Devon is in the fall, the Derby is in the spring.”

Johns Island, South Carolina (March 4, 2013) – Classic Company is heading to Conyers, Georgia and the Georgia International Horse Park to kick off its Atlanta Spring Classic March 20 through the 30th.

“We have been talking with the State Veterinarians in Mississippi, Florida and Georgia so that our protocol is appropriate for the horses competing in our upcoming show in Conyers,” said Classic Company President Bob Bell. “At this point, our procedure will be to meet all participants at the only entrance to the Park. Exhibitors must provide their horses’ health papers and those health papers must have been drawn within seven days from the date of arrival at Conyers,” Bell said. “Our procedure continues to be full cooperation with the state veterinarians,” he added. Dr. Juan Gamboa, Official Veterinarian of the Classic Company and avid exhibitor, said, “With the protocols we have in place, I am definitely going to show my horses at the Atlanta Spring shows.”

Updated Information on Biosecurity Protocols at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center

Wellington, FL – March 4, 2013 – Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP) announces that they have updated information regarding biosecurity protocols for the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC). ESP would also like to reaffirm that there are currently no new or suspected cases of EHV-1 associated with or on PBIEC property. ESP would like to thank the State of Florida Veterinarians and exhibitors for their efforts to prevent disease outbreak. ESP looks forward to a successful remainder of the show season for the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival and Adequan Global Dressage Festival.

“We would like to thank everyone for their diligence,” said ESP President Michael Stone. “It has so far proved to be an effective way to keep all of the horses at PBIEC healthy and safe. We encourage everyone to continue their biosecurity precautions, including regular daily temperature charts for their horses. We will continue our efforts as well to make sure that everyone can focus on great competition with healthy horses.”

ESP will continue to work closely with local treating veterinarians and State Veterinarians to ensure that we are doing everything possible to prevent EHV-1 disease at PBIEC.

Biosecurity protocols for PBIEC (both WEF and GDF show grounds) have been updated. Please see the letter below to see what will be required of horses shipping into the PBIEC show grounds.

Any horses shipping onto the property will still require a 48-hour health certificate or statement on official licensed veterinarian letterhead.

In effect until further notice, no horses will be allowed to ship onto the PBIEC property (both WEF and GDF grounds at The Stadium) without a health certificate within 48 hours of arriving. Unfortunately, we will not be able accept any horses arriving from the HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, other quarantined farms in Ocala, FL, or other quarantined farms onto the property (outside of the dates specified above) at this time.

Those arriving at the PBIEC who need health certificates can either call Palm Beach Equine Clinic (PBEC) at 561-793-1599 to receive a current health certificate or can get one from the PBEC veterinarian on the grounds.

ESP is asking all equestrians, especially those stabling off PBIEC property, to enact biosecurity protocols and be proactive and responsible for their horses, including daily temperature charts. Do not bring any horses that come from the HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala or other quarantined farms onto PBIEC property (outside of the dates specified above) until further notice.

ESP management has contacted all major shippers to inform them of the situation and for them to increase their biosecurity as well. There is currently no restriction on horses leaving the property.

An integral part of a showing environment includes healthy horses. Exhibitors, especially those traveling long distances, can contribute to that healthy environment by following some basic recommendations listed below. Please monitor our web site at www.equestriansport.com for any additional and possibly mandatory requirements.

A current negative coggins test. Please renew before it expires, and not just before it is necessary to leave the state. It is strongly recommended that all horses be vaccinated for Equine EHV-1 (either modified live or killed vaccine) no sooner than 7 days prior and no later than 90 days prior to entering the show grounds. Most EHV-1 vaccines are only considered effective for 90 days. Check with your veterinarian about which vaccine you use.
A health certificate or statement on licensed veterinarian letterhead within 48 hours is required for all horses shipping onto the property. All horses should be able to produce proof of vaccine, preferably labeled on these health certificates. Those who need health certificates when they arrive can contact Palm Beach Equine Clinic at 561-793-1599 or contact PBEC vets on the show grounds.
You should be able to document your horses’ normal temperature before arrival. Please do not ship horses with elevated temperatures. It is recommended that you establish a log of temperatures taken at least twice daily. If there is an elevated temperature for more than a 24 hour period, please consult your local Veterinarian immediately.
Every effort should be made to minimize stress and commingling of horses shipped long distances. Extra hours on a horse van, or moving from stable to stable, is the fastest way to compromise your horses’ and your neighbors’ horses’ health.
Any horse on the show grounds with a fever of unknown origin or of suspicious origin must be reported to ESP, LLC Management. It is always better to err on the side of safety. Isolation stalls will either be available on the grounds or at a local veterinary practice if the need arises.

WESTPORT, CT – March 4, 2013 – Artist Josee Nadeau will create an original painting live at the Fete Cheval Etoile on Friday, March 8, 2013 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Nadeau will perform to the musical tribute by Ki-Juan Minors to celebrate the unveiling of the Horse Stars Hall of Fame, and will donate the painting to be auctioned off later in the evening.

“I am honored to support the EQUUS Foundation which helps so many equine organizations,” said Nadeau. Nadeau’s amazing equine paintings are on display at the Gallery at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center through the end of March. “I was enthralled with Nadeau’s work when I viewed it first hand,” said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President. “Her images of horses truly capture their spirit and the bond between horses and people. We are so thrilled that she will perform live at our event.”

Nadeau was inspired to combine her art with music after a 2000 encounter at the private home of Guy Laliberte, founder of Cirque du Soleil, where George Harrison sang to her for 4 hours.

In October Nadeau was invited to paint live on stage to the 95-piece Salt Lake City Symphony Orchestra. In December she painted live to Dionne Warwick at her 50th anniversary performance. This past fall Nadeau was the featured artist at two Ralph Lauren stores in the Hamptons, South Hampton and East Hampton.

Nadeau, born in Montreal, and now residing in Utah was the guest painter of esteemed curator Gerald Van der Kemp on the grounds of Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s gardens for a period of 10 years defining her unique artistic skills.

Lars Petersen and Mariett Collect Second Win at Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W

Loxahatchee, FL – March 3, 2013 – Lars Petersen of Denmark scored a personal best for the season aboard Mariett to win the Grand Prix Freestyle at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W against a field of tough competition on a chilly and windy South Florida day.

Petersen and Mariett earned a 76.400% with the judge at C, Axel Steiner, awarding them a 77.875%. The victory capped an impressive weekend for the pair at the 30th anniversary of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby, set at the International Horse Sport (IHS) Champions Park at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee, FL. They won the opening day Grand Prix with a score of 72.745%.

Their freestyle success made it four wins in a row for Petersen and Mariett, who captured the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special in their last outing at the Wellington Classic Dressage Spring Challenge CDI3* (Feb. 7-10). The duo performed today’s freestyle with gusto to a routine set to energetic circus music. Although they went slightly off the prescribed choreography, their poise and precision made up for any change of course.

“I was very happy with the horse,” Petersen said. “I had a little mistake in my choreography, and I did a little bit of taking my own line in the middle of it. I thought about the jumping riders, but otherwise I was very happy with my horse today.”

When asked if the wind had anything to do with the change of course, he replied that it was all him. “There is nobody else to blame but this one,” he laughed, tapping himself on the head.

USA’s Shelly Francis and Doktor came in second with a 73.625%, mirroring their No. 2 spot from Friday’s Grand Prix when they scored a 69.391%. An enthusiastic crowd of supporters cheered on Francis, a local favorite who lives in White Fences at a neighboring property and has had great success this season with the rapidly improving Doktor.

“That was a lot of fun,” she said with a grin. “He was so good. He tries so hard. He’s awesome. I think I’ll keep him.”

Mikala Gundersen, also from Denmark, came away with the third place spot aboard My Lady with a 72.775%. They moved up the ranks from Friday’s fifth place finish in the Grand Prix with a freestyle featuring well-timed canter half-pass zig-zags to “Always on My Mind.”

“There’s some Elvis and some Bee Gees and some fun stuff in there,” Gundersen said. “I like my music to be fun and to sing along a little bit while I ride. It makes me more relaxed.”

Diane Creech from Canada rode to dramatic music that highlighted Devon L’s extensions. Their 70.950% placed them in fourth place, also moving them up from a ninth place finish on Friday in the Grand Prix.

“Devon was really good,” Creech said. “He really did his best. I was able to make sure he focused and stayed with me, and I was very happy.”

She added that the strong wind sometimes caught the music, changing the volume. “It makes it sound a little wild,” she explained. “That’s why he was a little distracted. Sometimes the wind would bring the music in, and then it would take it away and then bring it back again. But I am so happy that he dealt with it.”

Jaimey Irwin, also from Canada, placed fifth with a 70.725% riding Lindor’s Finest. The pair demonstrated well-timed passage to “You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon, and “Happy Birthday” played over the loudspeakers as they exited the ring to celebrate Irwin’s birthday.

“It had a lot of very good parts,” Irwin said. “Some little mistakes, but I’m very happy with him in the things we’ve been working on.”

Fellow Canadian, Jacqueline Brooks, rode D Niro to music from Canadian artists including double pirouettes to “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell. They scored a 70.325% to take the sixth place spot. Brooks was pleased with her ride and kept repeating “You’re such a good boy” to D Niro on the way out of the arena. “It was a nice windy day,” she grinned. “He had lots of energy and I’m really proud of him.”

James Koford and Rhett’s ground-covering changes to American-Indian themed freestyle music scored a 69.950% to take the seventh place spot. “I’m riding to a new freestyle for me,” he said. “It’s the 40th anniversary of the Battle at Wounded Knee, so it’s fun to actually ride it on the anniversary of that.”

David Marcus and Don Kontes earned eighth place with 69.100%. Their freestyle choreography meshed seamlessly with the dramatic music. “Overall, I was happy with him,” Marcus said. “He always tries his hardest. We had some communication errors and he was a little bit tired today, but he keeps rising to the occasion every time. Each show he gets a little stronger and a little more confident. Now it’s just all fine-tuning.”

Jodie Stevens Kelly rounded out the Grand Prix Freestyle field in ninth place with 66.800%. Kelly, who lives in Destin, FL, adopted the Auburn University football music theme as her freestyle music. “That’s my music and I love it,” she said. “I have so much fun with it.”

Petersen was not the only rider to pick up two wins at the Dressage Derby. Kim Herslow and Rosmarin added to Friday’s Intermediaire I victory by collecting first place in Sunday’s Intermediaire I Freestyle with a 71.650%. Herslow and Rosmarin, who were each making their debut in freestyle competition, looked like seasoned professionals as they coasted to the win.

“Terry Gallo did my music and she did a super job,” Herslow said. “She came out to help me do the choreography and get the timing. We used ‘Moves Like Jagger’ for our trot music and ‘Alessandro’ for our walk music and ‘Faith’ by George Michael for our canter music. It was really fun and Reno felt like he was really into it when he was in the ring. He moves like Jagger, so it fits him really well.”

Herslow, of Stockton, NJ, plans to compete Rosmarin once more in Florida before heading home, where they will prepare for summer competitions. Herslow is hoping to qualify Rosmarin for August’s Markel/USEF National Developing Horse Dressage Championships, and she was encouraged by their Dressage Derby results.

“I’m thrilled that he went in there really trying hard and really doing it for the first time with me,” Herslow said. “The music fits him so well, so he brought that presence into the ring with us today.”

Red Hills Horse Trials to Feature the Paso Fino: Florida’s Historic Breed

Paso Finos, Viva Florida and Red Hills Horse Trials are closely linked

March 1, 2013 – TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Red Hills International Horse Trials on March 8-10 will showcase Viva Florida 500 and the Paso Fino. For the sixth year as the only invited breed organization, members of the North Florida Paso Fino Horse Association (NFPFHA) and their horses will be at Red Hills Horse Trials on Sunday, March 10, to demonstrate the versatility of this historic breed, as they gear up for their annual show in Marianna, Florida at the end of April.

Spectators will have the chance to see a Paso Fino Grand National Champion stallion in the Red Hills Horse Trials Viva Florida Parade of Breeds, ridden by nationally recognized horsewoman Robin Ratliff. Ratliff has won more than 150 Grand National Championships, and her numerous awards and honors include the national Paso Fino Horse Association “Trainer of the Year” as well as the United States Equestrian Federation “Equestrian of Honor.”

“If you’ve never seen a Paso Fino, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss,” says NFPFHA President Leatha Flowers. “The Paso Fino movement is completely unique to the breed, and they are known for being the smoothest riding horse in the world – you have to ride one to believe it.”

Today’s Paso Finos trace their origins to the horses brought over in ships on the rough sea voyages to the New World nearly 500 years ago. Viva Florida 500, which commemorates the anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s east coast landing in 1513, not only celebrates the state of Florida, but it also is a pivotal point in the rich history of the Paso Fino.

According to Flowers, when the Spanish set out for the New World, they took careful consideration about what kinds of horses could endure the voyage. These horses needed to be small, sure-footed, strong, versatile and beautiful. Most importantly, the horses had to have a smooth stride – or gait – because the conquistadors wore heavy armor and weapons, and they did not want to bounce or “post” while they rode for hours or days. “The Paso Fino was the obvious choice,” says Flowers.

Nearly 450 years after those ships landed, Colin Phipps of Tallahassee brought the first Paso Finos to North Florida, to where the Red Hills Horse Trials are held today.

Red Hills spectators desiring to see more Paso Finos in action can attend the NFPFHA competition on April 27, at the Jackson County Agricultural Center in Marianna. Pasos from across north and central Florida – as well as Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana – will be competing in the annual “Gait-way to Fun Paso Show,” a qualifying event for the Grand National Show later this year.
