Entries for London 2012 Olympic Equestrian Events Unveiled – AMENDED

Lausanne (SUI), 16 July 2012 – An unfortunate error occurred in the list of Olympic Eventing entries issued to media on 14 July. Argentina was named originally, but did not in fact qualify any riders in Eventing. The number of nations taking part in Eventing is therefore 22.

An amended version of the press release is available below. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Athletes from 40 countries on six continents will compete in the equestrian events of the London 2012 Olympic Games, which get underway on 28 July. The list of entries validated by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is now available on the FEI website here.

Seven nations – Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the USA – will be represented by teams in all three Olympic equestrian disciplines of Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing. FEI Launches Olympic Website

Lausanne (SUI), 2 July 2012 – In the final countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the FEI has launched a new online hub fei.org/olympic dedicated to all things Olympic and Paralympic, both old and new.

In celebration of the centenary of equestrian sport in the Olympic Movement and all the equine and human athletes that have made Olympic equestrian history since 1912, a new section history.fei.org explores in detail each edition of the Games, with summaries on the sport, complete results, statistics and iconic photos of Olympic venues and the equestrian world’s most celebrated riders and horses. The richly illustrated website follows the evolution of a traditional activity open only to commissioned officers and “gentlemen riders” into the modern and exciting sport we know today. Amateur historians will be delighted to discover rare images and to enjoy little known facts and anecdotes.

The Olympic hub also includes all the technical information around the Olympic Games, links to schedules and results, as well as all the Olympic news from the FEI and a regularly updated photo gallery.

“Each Olympics and Paralympics bring new achievements and the ever changing horizon of sporting enterprise, and we greet each new experience with anticipation and expectation,” FEI President HRH Princess Haya said. “But the Games are not only about the here and now and what is to come. They are also about what has been achieved; what limitations have been exceeded, and what barriers broken; what records have been set and what heights of endeavour scaled.

FEI Confirms That Dalma Rushdi Malhas Will Not Compete at London 2012

Lausanne (SUI), 25 June 2012 – Dalma Rushdi Malhas, the Saudi Arabian rider who won individual bronze at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, will not be competing at London 2012, the FEI confirmed today.

The 20-year-old had been aiming to achieve the minimum eligibility standard required for the Olympic Games by the 17 June deadline, but her horse was sidelined by injury and missed a month’s work during the qualifying period.

The 12-year-old Swedish warmblood mare Caramell KS, which was bought from Swedish rider Svante Johansson at the end of 2011, was found to be suffering from a back problem, putting an end to Dalma’s hopes of qualifying for London 2012.

“There have been some reports in the media, but regretfully the Saudi Arabian rider Dalma Rushdi Malhas has not attained the minimum eligibility standards and consequently will not be competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games,” FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos said. “However, we understand that the IOC has a number of other female athletes from Saudi Arabia in other sports who are currently under consideration.

Grand Prix Champion Otto Retires to a Life of Leisure

June 18, 2012 — Otto, the 16-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding selected as an alternate to the US Olympic Dressage Team for the 2012 Olympic Games, will retire to greener pastures rather than make the trip across the pond to London this summer.

Owner Margaret Duprey of Wellington, Fla. said she decided to withdraw the pair from the list of horses and riders being considered for the Olympic Games. Instead, Otto is headed for a life of turnout and relaxation.

“I am giving back to him what he has given to us,” she said. “We made a decision before the trials (USEF Dressage Selection Trials in Gladstone, NJ, June 8-10 and 13-17) that we would retire him after the games. We think it’s time now.”

Otto’s rider for the past several years, Todd Flettrich, agrees. “In my eyes he is a superstar,” Flettrich said. “He has been a Grand Prix horse for so many years. Where else can he go? What else can he do? He rose to the occasion of the Olympic trials. There is nothing else for him to prove.”
