Big Buzz Ahead of Olympic Dressage at Greenwich Park

The Netherlands' Anky Van Grunsven celebrated a hat-trick of back-to-back Individual Olympic titles at the Beijing 2008 equestrian events in Hong Kong. She is pictured riding double Olympic champion Salinero who will line out once again at London 2012.

Lausanne (SUI), 18 July 2012 – There was a time when the world of international Dressage was all too predictable, but how much that has changed. Since the last Olympic Games in 2008 this sport has experienced an extraordinary make-over which, despite the reticence of the purists, has ensured that the buzz ahead of London 2012 could hardly be more electrifying.

Who could have known that one black stallion would prance into a floodlit arena on an August night in 2009 and that things would never be the same again? The Dutch combination of Totilas and Edward Gal are no longer together, and the horse whose magical spell attracted a whole new audience to this most disciplined of sports during a record-breaking spree that is already the stuff of legend, will not be returning to the country where it all began during the FEI European Championships three years ago. His new rider, Germany’s Mathias Alexander Rath, cannot compete in London due to unfortunate ill-health, but Totilas has already created a wonderful legacy – gone is the stuffiness, and the fear of making a mistake. If riders are prepared to take the risk, the rewards for expressive, inspired performances – while still retaining the accuracy – are scores like we have never seen before.

CULPEPER, VA (July 17, 2012) – HITS Culpeper capped two weeks of horse shows on Sunday with a record number of competitors spending the early part of their summer at the Cavalier Classic. It was Rachel Udelson of Middleburg, Virginia and her own VDL Wardorette who rode to top honors in Sunday’s $40,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Udelson was one of three to go double clear and used to last round of the day to steal the win.

“This was the perfect ending to a great two weeks,” said Udelson. “This course was nice; it asked all the right questions and was just technical enough.”

After a win in last week’s Brook Ledge Open Jumper Prix and a fourth-place finish in last Sunday’s Grand Prix, all the pieces fell into place for Udelson and her nine-year-old mare as they topped a field of 25. The pair bested a 13 obstacle course and was one of eight to advance to the jump-off.

Eventing First Up as Greenwich Welcomes the Equestrian World

Germany's Hinrich Romeike took Eventing Team and Individual gold in Hong Kong where the equestrian events of the Beijing Olympic Games took place in 2008.

Lausanne (SUI), 17 July 2012 – With just 10 days to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the hopes and dreams of equestrian athletes and their support crews are all focused on Greenwich Park, in the heart of England’s capital city.

It would be difficult to find a more gracious location in which to celebrate equestrian sport’s century of involvement in the Olympic movement. And the three Olympic disciplines of Eventing, Dressage and Jumping can be expected to provide 14 days of extraordinary sport.

Eventing leads the way, with the First Horse Inspection taking place on the same day as IOC President, Jacques Rogge, greets Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, at the entrance to the Olympic Stadium at Marshgate Lane during the London 2012 Opening Ceremony on Friday 27 July.

Nina Lamsam Ligon, winner of the FEI’s HSBC Rising Star Award 2011, is to represent Thailand in Eventing at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Thailand is one of the 10 nations represented only by individuals in Eventing. Ligon will compete on Butts Leon, an experienced four-star Hanoverian produced by German rider Andreas Dibowski. Butts Leon and Dibowski were on the German gold-winning medal team at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Ligon, who is a dual national (THA/USA), has been in the UK since April of this year to prepare for the Games and give her four horses the chance to acclimatise. She was keen to broaden her three-star level experience in the host nation of the 2012 Olympic Games and the past few months have seen her compete at events at Houghton Hall, Bramham and Barbury Castle.

The FEI’s HSBC Rising Star Award rewards an equestrian athlete between the ages of 14 and 21 who demonstrates outstanding sporting talent and commitment.

The final phase at The Event at Rebecca Farm proved to be a test for many riders, but in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* it did not change the overnight standings one bit. After the final horse crossed the finish line of Richard Jeffery’s show jumping course it was Kristi Nunnink who came out on top with her 11-year-old Holsteiner mare R-Star (Riverman x Marisol).

“It has just been kind of magical actually,” said Kristi. “She has been really good in all three phases – I couldn’t be happier. It’s been great and my little Prelim horse won also, so it has been an awesome weekend.”

“I felt really comfortable coming into today,” continued Kristi. “The jumps didn’t seem that big to me. I had seen some rough goes, but I wasn’t really too concerned as she really is a good show jumper.”

“The weather turned great – everything was wonderful, we had beautiful arenas, beautiful footing, it was a great event.”

Weber Breaks Record at 2012 CAIO Aachen and Shares the Win for the Prize of the Martello Immoblienmanagement

Aachen, Germany (July 16, 2012)  – The 2012 CAIO Aachen was a rollercoaster of ups and downs for US driver Chester Weber, who with a team of horses owned by himself and Jane Forbes Clark is competing on the European tour this summer with his sights set on the World Championships in Reisenbeck.  Despite an excellent start, Weber met with a string of unfortunate events combined with moments of brilliance during his tour at Aachen, from record-breaking dressage scores to his horse putting a leg over a trace and an emergency in his immediate family.

Weber began by putting in his now trademark dressage test during the individual competition, scoring only 33.54 penalty points in the opening phase.  In so doing he broke the Aachen record and secured himself a comfortable lead going into the cones.  The Ground Jury unanimously put Weber in first place, an excellent sign as this same jury will serve during the upcoming FEI World Championships in Riesenbeck next month.  Weber also took home another accolade in the dressage arena when he tied with Australian driver Boyd Exell during the first phase of the team competition.  The tie awarded both drivers the Prize of the Martello Immoblienmanagement.
