Free Gelding Surgery for Horses Offered at Kentucky Horse Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 5, 2012) – In an effort to help reduce the number of unwanted and inconvenient horses being bred in Kentucky, the Kentucky Horse Park is hosting its second Free Gelding Clinic on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

This free clinic is being provided by the Kentucky Horse Park in partnership with the Kentucky Horse Council’s Save Our Horses fund and the American Horse Council’s Unwanted Horse Coalition.

“The threats facing Kentucky’s horses can be overcome when horse owners take their responsibilities seriously and provide good stewardship, and when other good people make up their minds to get involved,” said John Nicholson, executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park. “This clinic is a great example of how horse owners can do the right thing for their animals in spite of a challenging economy, with the help of individuals and organizations that are willing to come alongside them with resources and expertise.”

Dear Pryor Wild Horse Defenders;
We’ve just learned that the BLM Field Office in Billings has extended the comment period for the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) until January 20th. Emailed comments will be accepted (BLM_MT_Billings_FO@blm.gov), but physically mailed comments are encouraged (Jim Sparks: BLM Billings Field Manager, 5001 Southgate Drive, Billings, MT 59101).

In light of this extension, we are doing more research on alternatives to an unnecessary removal of 30 young Pryor mustangs. We will be sending this new information soon.

Stay tuned!

Happy Trails!

Dressage at Devon to Focus on Capital Campaign and Dressage Education in 2012

Devon, PA (January 2, 2012) – America’s most prestigious Dressage Horse Show, Dressage at Devon has continued to grow and evolve over the past 37 years. The show has provided a top show venue for competitors, a unique “Norman Rockwell” style American shopping venue and has benefited various charities over the years. Over the past 21 years, Thorncroft Equestrian Center has been the charitable beneficiary of the Dressage at Devon horse show. This month Thorncroft Equestrian Center opted to move in a new direction for their fundraising efforts giving Dressage at Devon an opportunity to focus on the capital campaign allocating proceeds from the show to continued improvements at the show grounds and to focus on dressage education.

“It is a great time for Dressage at Devon to give even more back to the sport,” said Lori Kaminski, President of the Dressage at Devon Board of Directors. “Dressage at Devon has decided to take this opportunity to focus on our mission statement of producing a world class dressage and dressage sport horse breeding show, promoting the sport of dressage, and supporting dressage education. We have already initiated a capital campaign along with the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Foundation to raise the funds needed to excavate and rebuild the schooling arena using the same high quality footing that has already been installed in the competition arenas. This improvement will include the necessary drainage and provide a safer environment for horses, riders, and handlers. Educational sessions for dressage judges and dressage sport horse judges are in the planning stages for 2012 and we are currently in the process of identifying the topics and presenters for the Wednesday evening forum and the weekend mini seminars.”

A Few Good Movies, by Claire Dorotik

For most people, equine therapy is pretty fascinating to watch. However, without a visual account of just what happens between a horse and a human, the general public is at a loss to fully understand just how our beloved equine friends can really help people better understand themselves. Sometimes words just don’t describe the magic between people and horses. Yet clearly, judging by the success of movies such as “Seabiscuit”, people are truly amazed by horses, and all the while, profoundly affected by this admiration. So, in honoring the way in which an observable accounting of equine therapy can reveal more fully what it is, I have compiled a list of great equine-therapy related movies.

1.       “Seabiscuit” Portraying the life of the famous racehorse, Seabiscuit, this movie also demonstrates the way in which the courageous character of a horse can uplift a down and out nation.
