USET Foundation Awards Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant to Meghan O’Donoghue

Gladstone, NJ – November 19, 2013 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that it has awarded the 2014 Amanda Warrington Grant to Eventing rider Meghan O’Donoghue of Carbondale, IL. The Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant is awarded through the USET Foundation Amanda Pirie Warrington Fund. Earlier this year, O’Donoghue and her talented mount Pirate competed at their first 4* event during the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event CCI, where they placed twelfth.

The Amanda Pirie Warrington Fund was established by Amanda’s family in her memory with the purpose of helping provide financial assistance to an event rider who has been identified as a rider with great talent and ability to represent the United States in the future.

The Grant Committee recommends a recipient that they believe will benefit from the opportunity of continuing their training with top coaches and competing against the world’s best horse and rider combinations in Eventing, one of three Olympic equestrian disciplines, and it is then ratified by the USET Foundation Executive Committee.

“I am extremely honored to receive the Amanda Warrington Grant as this year comes to a close,” expressed O’Donoghue. “I had a great 2013 with my first 4* and first international event under my belt. The opportunities this grant will provide for me will hopefully produce even better results for 2014. Again, I can’t thank the USET Foundation and the committee enough for choosing me, and I will use this grant to honor Amanda.”

As the recipient of the grant, O’Donoghue will receive up to $5,000 to help offset expenses associated with her training over the next year. After receiving the Jacqueline B. Mars Competition and Training Grant earlier this year, O’Donoghue was able to compete at the Fidelity Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials CCI3* in England just six months after her 4* début with Pirate.

O’Donoghue was most recently named to the High Performance Winter/Spring Training Lists for the 2014 season. An 11-year-old off-track Thoroughbred, Pirate and O’Donoghue have been partnered together for eight years, taking the Eventing world by storm and ready to prove they can represent the United States on the international stage.

Lexington, KY – May 20, 2013 – The 2013 Alltech National Horse Show announced today that for the third year in a row, the Saturday evening performance will benefit the United States Equestrian Team Foundation. During the Saturday evening performance, featuring the show’s main event, the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix, the horse show will share fifty percent of the night’s gate receipts with the USET Foundation.

The third edition of the Alltech National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, is scheduled for October 29 – November 3, 2013. The show will once again be held at the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. For the second year in a row, the Alltech National Horse Show was named the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame’s Horse Show of the Year and was again named as one of NARG’s (North American Riders Group) top rated North American events.

The United States Equestrian Team Foundation supports the competition, training, coaching, travel and educational needs of America’s elite and developing international high performance horses and athletes in partnership with the United States Equestrian Federation. Its main tasks are to support athletes, promote international excellence and build for the future.

Bonnie Jenkins, Executive Director of the USET Foundation, spoke of the successful and important partnership. “We are so grateful to the Alltech National Horse Show for highlighting and supporting the important role of the USET Foundation. With so many riders who have represented the United States in Nations Cup competition, as well as the young up and coming talent that will be competing on Grand Prix night, makes it a perfect fit reflecting our core mission of supporting athletes, promoting international excellence and building for the future. Continuing the tradition and partnership of the USET and the National Horse Show is something we feel privileged and grateful to be part of and thank them for helping us achieve our mission,” she said.

“We are excited to continue the worthwhile tradition of the National Horse Show supporting the activities of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation,” said Mason Phelps, Jr., President of the National Horse Show Association. “The Alltech National Horse Show, for the past two years, was honored to make a major commitment to the USET Foundation. Those contributions last year were especially important for the team’s effort in London. Now it’s time to look ahead and with so many events and championships on the horizon, we are proud to once again reaffirm that commitment to the USET Foundation.”

“Saturday night at the Alltech National Horse Show has become a very important part of the USET Foundation’s fund raising efforts. We are grateful and appreciative to the Alltech National Horse Show for once again including us on Saturday night,” said USET Foundation Development Committee Co-Chairman Bruce Duchossois. “Each year the show has gotten better and better and now in its third year, all of us at the USET Foundation are honored to be a part of this great tradition again. We thank Alltech and the National Horse Show for their generosity.”

The 2013 Alltech National Horse Show takes center stage on October 29 – November 3, 2013, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to the top rated hunters and the ASPCA Maclay National Championship, the show features world-class international, open, junior and amateur-owner jumpers competing for the biggest prize money on the United States indoor tour.

Founded in 1883 at the original Madison Square Garden, the National Horse Show is America’s oldest indoor horse show, firmly established as a major fixture on the national and international sports and social event calendars. The National Horse Show Association’s primary activity is the annual production of the National Horse Show and all ancillary events. Over the years, the National Horse Show has provided financial aid to many worthwhile charities.

USET Foundation Awards Pinnacle Cup to Buck Davidson, Jr.

Buck Davidson was awarded the USET Foundation’s Pinnacle Cup Trophy for the third time as the highest placed American rider at the 2013 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI****. Photo By: Nancy Jaffer.

Lexington, KY – May 8, 2013 – The USET Foundation is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Pinnacle Cup Trophy at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI**** is Bruce O. Davidson, Jr. of Riegelsville, PA, and Ocala, FL. Davidson, known as “Buck,” rode Ballynoe Castle RM to a fourth place finish at the prestigious event and was the highest placed American rider, which earned him the trophy.

This marks the third year that Davidson has earned the coveted award, taking home the Pinnacle Cup in 2009 and 2003. Ballynoe Castle RM, a 13-year-old Belgian Warmblood/Irish Thoroughbred cross-owned by Carl and Cassandra Segal, traveled to England as an alternate for the United States Eventing Olympic squad in 2008 and represented the U.S. at the 2010 World Equestrian Games. This year the pair finished with 45.2 penalties in the Dressage phase, and then moved up from eighth place after completing a clear cross country phase. They had eight faults over the technical stadium jumping track on the final day to finish with 53.2 faults in the fourth place position.

“This is my third year winning the award, which is really wonderful, although I’d really like to win the event,” laughed Davidson. “It was a great weekend and all of my horses were fantastic. I just feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to win the Pinnacle Cup more than one time.”

Davidson and Ballynoe Castle RM are a veteran duo and Davidson felt very confident on his seasoned mount. “I had two other really nice horses that went before Ballynoe Castle that are just less experienced, so I was able to go around the cross country course twice before showing him,” he explained. “He’s maybe not the fastest horse, but he has a lot of experience. I started off quickly and jumped all the fences safely and it just worked out perfectly. I couldn’t have had a better ride; he gave me everything he had.”

Davidson added, “Ballynoe Castle is a once in a lifetime horse. I started him from the beginning. He’s 13 now, and he’s been competing at the advanced level since he was eight. I’m just so thankful and so lucky to be partnered with an unbelievable horse. It’s been a dream ride and I don’t really want to wake up from the dream. I want to have him for a long time, so whatever he tells me he is feeling is what we are going to do. This horse does not owe me anything.”

Looking ahead, Davidson is aiming for the CIC at World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany. “CICs are really his thing because he’s a little bit shorter, so that would be an exciting trip to go on. Then we’ll see. Obviously I’d like to go to the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, whether it’s with Ballynoe Castle or any of my other mounts.”

Saer Coulter Honored with 2013 Maxine Beard Award by USET Foundation

Tampa, FL – April 7, 2013 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that 21-year-old Saer Coulter of San Francisco, CA, has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Maxine Beard Show Jumping Rider Award. Coulter was presented with the Maxine Beard Award trophy at the American Invitational on April 6, 2013, at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL.

The selection was based on Coulter’s competitive record and potential to represent the United States in international competition. In 2012, Coulter advanced to the highest levels of the sport, competing in the 2012 Olympic Selection Trials and also in multiple World Cup Qualifiers and Global Champions Tour events. The award provides Coulter the opportunity to be credentialed and travel with the U.S. delegation to the 2013 FEI World Cup Finals in Gothenburg, Sweden, from April 24 – April 28. She will observe the operations of an international championship, including the stabling area, veterinary inspections and schooling, and will walk the courses with the U.S. Show Jumping Coach, Robert Ridland.

“It’s a really big honor to receive this award,” expressed Coulter. “Looking at the people that have won it in the past, it encourages you to keep continuing jumping at a high level and try and make the upper levels of the computer list and the senior teams. I tried to qualify for World Cup Finals and I just missed it, so it’s really exciting to be able to go and be a part of the team.”

Coulter’s international success began in 2010 when she and Chalan were on the team that represented the United States bringing home a victory at the CSIO Buenos Aires in Argentina. In 2011, Coulter placed second in the $50,000 HITS World Cup Qualifier in California aboard her Dutch Warmblood gelding, Springtime, and also placed second in the $40,000 Blenheim Spring Classic II Grand Prix.

After finishing 10th in the Olympic Selection Trials and being named to the USEF Long List for the U.S. Show Jumping Team for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Coulter and Springtime finished third in the $100,000 Hermes Grand Prix of Del Mar. Throughout the summer she traveled to Europe to compete in the Global Champions Tour (GCT).

Coulter continued, “The Trials were an unbelievable experience. I think being able to jump a championship format against those riders was a great opportunity. It taught me a lot about riding my horse through different rounds, and how he starts and how he feels by the last day. I also got a lot of experience this summer getting to jump in the GCT events.”

The Stanford University senior rides out of her family’s Copernicus Stables, while training with Markus and Meredith Michaels Beerbaum. Coulter recently added new mounts to her string including Don V.H.P. Z, Carmena Z and Graciella 50.

“Last year, the focus was on gaining experience at the 1.60m level, and now I am focused on staying more consistent at that level,” explained Coulter. “One of my main goals is to get my new horses jumping consistently at the 1.60m level. I’ll do the GCT this summer, and I hope to make a few more second rounds and get a few good ribbons. I’d love to be a part of the World Equestrian Games process next year, whatever that may be, and maybe the 2016 process for Rio a few years from now. I just hope to continue getting the right experience in order to be a part of those events.”

“Saer is a talented and hardworking rider who truly deserves this honor as she was a top placer in the World Cup West Coast League, just narrowly missing out on competing herself at the Championship this year. I fully expect we will see Saer on more United States teams and at international championships. She has a very bright future in this sport”, commented George H. Morris.

With the talent, drive, and determination to be a top-notch competitor, Coulter has proven that she will be a part of the future for show jumping in the United States.

Updated Biosecurity Protocols for USET Foundation

Gladstone, NJ – April 3, 2013 – In light of the recent EHV-1 (equine herpes virus) outbreak, the USET Foundation has announced updated biosecurity protocols for all horses entering the USET Foundation Hamilton Farm Facility. This protocol has been put in place under the advisement of our USET veterinarians to ensure the health and safety of all horses entering the facility as we strive to keep our environment available, safe and healthy for upcoming equestrian events.

Updated biosecurity protocols for USET Foundation include:

A current negative coggins test. It is strongly recommended that all horses be vaccinated for Equine EHV-1 (either modified live or killed vaccine) no sooner than 7 days prior and no later than 90 days prior to entering the USET Foundation. Most EHV-1 vaccines are only considered effective for 90 days. Check with your veterinarian about which vaccine you should use.

Any horses shipping into the USET Foundation will require a 48-hour health certificate or statement on official licensed veterinarian letterhead. All horses should be able to provide proof of vaccine, preferably labeled on the health certificate.

Document your horses’ normal temperature prior to arrival. PLEASE DO NOT SHIP HORSES WITH ELEVATED TEMPERATURES since this is usually an early and effective indicator of a problem.

The attached form will be required for all horses entering the facility. This form is to certify that none of the horses in your care have been in direct contact or stabled with any horses that have received a positive test for the EHV-1 virus or have been stabled at a quarantined facility. By signing this form you certify that you will continue to follow all biosecurity precautions set forth by the USET Foundation.

Click Here to Download the Form

At this time we will not be requiring temperature checks by on-site veterinarians upon arrival; however, again we urge you to practice routine temperature checks on your horses daily.

“We would like to thank everyone for their diligence in adhering to this important protocol so we can continue to make our facility available and keep your horses healthy,” said Executive Director, Bonnie Jenkins.

In addition to daily training sessions with Morris, the riders will participate in hands on sessions with a veterinarian, farrier, top team stable manager, physiotherapist, and high performance business executive. Each rider will meet one-on-one with Morris during the week to discuss their current and future plans and Morris will help guide them in putting together a program that will continue their preparation for international “team” competition. Morris will also remain available after the program to follow up and monitor each rider’s progress.

“George’s continued involvement in the high performance program is critical to providing the path, and establishing a pool of riders that are prepared and ready in every respect to represent this country on nations cup teams. Gladstone is the perfect setting to host this important program as it is the place where the ‘team’ lived, trained and competed under the watchful eye of legendary coach Bert DeNemethy, producing some of this country’s most successful and iconic show jumping riders, Bill Steinkraus, Frank Chapot and George to name a few. I am most grateful to George for helping me increase the depth of talent available for nations cup competitions, and instilling the Gladstone ethic in these riders, which is what this program is all about,” remarked Robert Ridland, USEF Show Jumping Chef d’Equipe.

USET Foundation Executive Director Bonnie B. Jenkins said, “This program has been realized through the generosity of USET Foundation supporters Suzanne and B. G. Porter who recognize the enormous potential of this country’s show jumping program and the opportunity we have with George to mentor and guide the next generation of team riders as they progress up the ranks.”

Riders interested in participating should complete an application and submit to the USET Foundation, P.O. Box 355, Gladstone, NJ 07935, or fax: 908-234-0670 no later than April 19th. Selected riders will be notified on or about April 25th. Applications are available on the USET Foundation and USEF websites, www.uset.org and www.usef.org.

Salute to Driving Goes Off without a Hitch, Raising Funds for USET Foundation

Windsor, SC – March 6, 2013 – For the third year in a row, the Salute to Driving weekend, held in Windsor, SC, March 1-3, 2013, featured a beautiful dinner and auction, multiple driving clinics and a Combined Test Competition, all for the benefit of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation and the United States Equestrian Federation’s High Performance Driving program.

A highlight of the weekend was the successful Saturday night dinner and auction, which was held at organizing committee member Bev Lesher’s Courage to Lead Farm. The evening event was put on to raise funds for the USET Foundation that will be specifically dedicated to helping train the best drivers and equines to represent the USA in World Driving Championships.

During the decadent Berry Catering dinner, organized by Wendy O’Brien, attendees bid on fabulous live auction pieces. Auctioneer Paul Martin donated his time to handle the Live Auction of six special items. A sampling included a week at Hilton Head SC in a top resort condo for four including free greens fees, a dinner for 6 in Aiken in Jack Wetzel’s restored Log Cabin, three nights for two (including breakfast) in Boston at the prestigious Union House, Stabling and a B&B for two nights in Maine at the wonderful Acadia National Park in Maine, and a week’s stay in a 4 bedroom home on Block Island in Rhode Island. In addition to the Live Auction, a Silent Auction ran at the event from Friday morning through Saturday night and came to a close following the dinner.

Prior to the benefit dinner and auction, the weekend long Salute to Driving kicked off with dressage clinics by Michael Freund and Sterling Graburn at Chateau Log and Courage to Lead Farms. Freud led the USEF long listed drivers through the clinic, while Graburn worked with developing drivers. Other special events included a hazard demonstration and clinic, harnessing demonstrations, farrier demonstrations and a carriage exhibit. All of the weekend events served to help raise awareness and educate different audiences about the discipline of driving.

“We helped educate more people about the driving discipline, and at the same time raised funds for the USET Foundation, specifically for the driving discipline,” Lesher said. “We received many compliments about the dinner and the whole organization of everything. Everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

The weekend concluded on Sunday with the Combined Test Competition. Drivers at the preliminary through advanced levels had the opportunity to showcase their skills in both dressage and cones. For the first time since its inception three years ago, the Salute to Driving also welcomed ‘Very Small Equines’ (VSEs) in the combined test. The VSEs were also showcased doing a quadrille driving performance organized by Janelle Marshall. To the tune of “Flight of the Bumblebees,” eight drivers decked out in yellow and black bumblebee style put their VSEs through their paces and got huge appreciation from the crowd.
