Wellington, FL – March 14, 2013 – The third international competition for the 2013 Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) began today with the opening CDI competition, the FEI Grand Prix. This week’s show, the WEF Dressage Classic CDI 3*, presented by Today’s Equestrian & Fellows, runs March 14-17, 2013. Today’s winner was Tina Konyot from Palm City, FL, riding Calecto V.

There were 55 entries that jogged for the CDI competition this morning, with Carlos Munoz taking home the prize for Best Turnout Award from Show Chic with Klouseau.

The judges for today’s FEI Grand Prix were: Anne Gribbons at E, Janet Foy at H, Isabelle Judet at C, Ulrike Nivelle at M, and Bo Ahman at B.

Konyot and Calecto V, winners of the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle at the last CDI-W competition at the AGDF, won today’s FEI Grand Prix with a score of 70.553%. Cesar Parra (USA) and Van the Man placed second with a score of 68.213%. Susan Dutta (USA) placed third with Currency DC on a score of 67.383%.

Konyot traveled from Palm City to Wellington this morning in order to compete, and felt that the early morning wake-up call may have had an effect on Calecto V, her and John Byrialsen’s 15-year-old Danish Warmblood stallion (Come Back II x Rastell).

“I had a few little bobbles. It felt maybe just a slight bit tired, and it shouldn’t be, because the weather is lovely. I did wake him up at 4 am,” she acknowledged with a smile. “He’s been laying down sleeping; he had three naps today. He’s a very laid-back guy! I was happy with it. I had some very nice things, but we could have just a little bit more energy in the package. Tomorrow is another day.”

Konyot joked about Calecto’s penchant for napping. “He doesn’t just lay down. He’s lays out flat, goes to sleep, snores. At the Olympics, they took videos of him. He starts running and whinnying in his sleep. You’ve never seen anything like it. That’s just him.”

The pair will compete in tomorrow night’s FEI Grand Prix Freestyle and Konyot said she’s sure Calecto will “be on his toes.” She added, “He feels good and he’s happy. He felt very good physically and in his body.”

Konyot is looking forward to the evening, which will combine show jumping and dressage. “It should be a beautiful evening. Tomorrow night should be a lot of energy and electricity. That’s very exciting and this is such a gorgeous showgrounds. It’s very special to have it right here.”

In addition to their class win, Konyot and Calecto were presented with the Champion Equine Insurance Dressage Style of Riding Award presented by Laura Whitlow of Champion Equine Insurance.

In the national divisions, Megan Glynn had a one-two finish in the FEI Prix St. Georges – AA class with Tyto (62.303%) and Everybody’s Darling (61.908%). The high score of the day was Alix Szepesi on Primative Dancer, who did the First Level Test 2 in the USEF Test of Choice and received a 74.189%.

The Para-Equestrian competition begins tomorrow in the Van Kampen Covered Arena, along with a full schedule of competition in the National divisions in the Wellington Equestrian Realty Rings 1 and 2. The Para-Equestrian riders will compete tomorrow in five grades for their team scores. Their individual tests will run on Saturday, and the team and individual scores combined will determine the team placings. On Sunday, they will have their freestyle classes.

Come see top United States para-equestrians such as Mary Jordan on her homebred mare Clever, along with Sebastian, with whom she placed fifth in qualifications for the London Paralympic Team. The Canadians have brought a strong contingent as well, including three out of four of their team from last summer’s Paralympic Games.

Don’t miss tomorrow night’s exciting line-up of events at the AGDF, including the $10,000 Head-to-Head Competition over the high jump “Puissance” wall at 6 pm, the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle presented by Horseware Ireland under the lights at 7:30 pm, and The Yale Spizzwinks (?) A Capella singing performances. General admission and parking are free, and there will be fantastic raffle prizes handed out to general admission seat holders. It will be a night of power and grace for equestrian sport that you won’t want to miss!

Live Oak International Set to Begin

Show Jumping and Driving Coverage on USEF Network

Ocala, Florida – Live Oak International, the only equestrian event in North America to feature both world-class driving and show jumping, takes place from March 20 to 24 at Live Oak Plantation in Ocala, FL.  For the first time, live coverage of Saturday and Sunday’s events from the Live Oak International will be available for viewing on the USEF Network, www.usefnetwork.com.

A total of 14 nations will be represented in the show jumping competition, including 2004 Olympic Champion Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil, and 1996 Olympic team silver medalists Leslie Howard of the United States.  Newly crowned 2012 Olympic team gold medalist Ben Maher of Great Britain will also be in attendance, as will Andres Rodriguez of Venezuela, a winner at last year’s Live Oak International.

Featured show jumping events include Friday’s $5,000 1.30m Waldron Wealth Management Power &Speed competition at 2 p.m. and the $10,000 E2 Show Jumpers Welcome Stake at 4 p.m., Saturday’s $50,000 CSI2* Live Oak International Grand Prix at 2 p.m., and Sunday’s $33,000 CSI2* Hollow Creek Farm Winning Round at 2:30 p.m.  As an added incentive for competitors, G&C Farm will offer a $10,000 Leading Rider bonus while Jerry Parks Insurance Group will reward the Leading Junior Rider and the Leading Amateur Rider.

Two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios will be setting the tracks in the John Deere Arena, one of the few grass show jumping venues in the United States, while Damian Guthrie will manage the show jumping competition with assistance from Spruce Meadows personnel.

Chester Weber won the FEI Four-in-Hand division at the 2012 Live Oak International
Chester Weber won the FEI Four-in-Hand division at the 2012 Live Oak International

While show jumping is being offered for the second year, Live Oak International has hosted international driving competition for more than 20 years.  This year, it will offer the highest amount of prize money of any driving event in North America in addition to hosting the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) National Championship for Pairs.  Sanctioned as a CAI-B driving event by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and offering single, pair and four-in-hand divisions for horses and ponies, Live Oak International attracts the top driving competitors from across North America.  In the four-in-hand division, four entries will vie for top honors, including last year’s winner Chester C. Weber, who is also the Co-President of the Live Oak International.

“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support that this year’s event has received from both the show jumping and driving communities,” said Weber, a two-time World Championship individual silver medalist.  “We are in a unique position of having more entries in both disciplines than we can accommodate.  With the best athletes in the sport and the addition of live coverage on the USEF Network, those watching in person and from afar will be treated to world-class competition at this year’s Live Oak International.”

Driving will be held in three phases, beginning with Dressage on Thursday and Friday morning, Saturday’s Driving Marathon phase is especially thrilling as carriages negotiate complex obstacles, each individually sponsored.  Sunday’s driving events feature the all-deciding cones competition.  In 2012, over 5,000 spectators turned out to enjoy Saturday’s Driving Marathon competition followed by the $50,000 CSI2* Grand Prix for show jumping.

Held at Live Oak Plantation, the private 4,000-acre farm of the Weber family, the Live Oak International is produced by nine-time winner of the USEF Four In Hand Driving Championship Chester C. Weber of Ocala, FL, and his sister, Juliet W. Reid, who led the Washington International Horse Show as President of the Board for the past four years.  Offering unparalleled hospitality, competitors will enjoy the fun and excitement of Saturday night’s Denim & Lugano Diamonds Exhibitor’s Party.

Given the recent concerns over the spread of EHV-1 in the state of Florida, Live Oak International is working diligently with the organizing committees of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, and the Stadium Jumping competitions in Tampa, FL, to establish protocols and enact biosecurity measures to ensure a seamless transfer of horses between the three venues. Live Oak International also acts as a qualifying event for the $200,000 Gene Mische American Invitational presented by G&C Farm in Tampa, FL, on April 6.

In addition to the competition, spectators can enjoy the Classic Car Show, sponsored by Palm Chevrolet & Kia, as well as a vendor village and the Signature Brands Kids Zone featuring pony rides and a bounce house.  Admission is $10 per person, $5 for children under 12, with proceeds benefiting the Marion County Therapeutic Riding Association.

Live Oak International wishes to recognize its generous sponsors for their support, including 14 Hands Vineyards, ABBA, Adequan, American Invitational, Michael Ayers, BB&T Chazel Insurance, Beloved Farm, Ned Bliss, Brandywine Tent, Camping World, Cannon Carriages, Cape Code Finished Wood Siding, Charles Owen, Cheney Brothers, Jane Forbes Clark, The Clothes Horse, Coast to Coast Truck & Trailer, Connollys Nursery, Dever, Don Stewart Stables, Dutta Corp, E2 Show Jumpers, Equine Journal, Fidelity Investments, Dr. Rae and Nancy Fischer, Florida Express, Freund, G&C Farm, Gloria Austin, Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club, Grand Oaks Resort & Carriage Museum, Great American Insurance Group, Hermitage International Training Center, Hillcroft Farm, Hilton, Hollow Creek Farm, Wayne Humphreys, Insight Credit Union, Iron Spring Farm, Jerry Parks Insurance Group, Joan Pletcher Realtor, John Deere, Johnson Horse Transportation, Pixie Keating, Kentucky Classic, Kentucky Equine Research, Mary Mott-Kocsis, John Levy, Louisburg Farm, Lugano Diamonds, Marion County Visitor and Convention Bureau, Mark’s Steak House, Mid State Electric, MorganStanley, Ocala Star-Banner, Palm Chevrolet & Kia, Party Time Rentals, Pine Flakes, PlaneSense, Peterson & Smith, RBC, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, The Sanctuary, Seminole Wellness, Shepherd Kaplan LLC, Signature Brands ,Sleepy P Farm, SmartPak, Christine Smith-Byerly, Stella Artois, Stonecliff Farm, Tequestrian, Trout Walk Farm, Waldron Wealth Management, Harley Waller, Waterside Environmental Care, Woodside Stables, WR Ranch and Dave and Boots Wright.

About the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (excerpt from www.globaldressagefestival.com)

The Adequan Global Dressage Festival (Adequan GDF) was created as one of the finest show grounds in the world with a calendar of events and prize money in its first year that places it in the top tier of competitions.

Five CDIs staged by a single organization are more than at any other show grounds in the world. Prize money of more than $275,000 that is the richest single circuit except for the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, what is to horse sports what Wimbledon is to tennis.

The show grounds consists of four arenas that are equal in quality to those at the 2012 and 2008 Olympic Games, several hundred stadium seats around the main ring and the first 200 of what will be 300 permanent horse stalls and a raised courtyard at the center of the show grounds providing a panoramic view of the entire facility.  One of the world’s largest covered arenas at 360 by 210 feet (110 x 64 meters), and a VIP club overlooking the main competition arena.

Dressage has replaced the billiard-table smooth grass polo fields that were the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club stadium where Prince Charles played to kick start Wellington as THE winter lifestyle destination for the world.

The dressage grounds adjoin a beautiful grass jumping derby field all part of the sprawling Palm Beach International Equestrian Center that attracts thousands of horses from about three dozen countries for jumper and hunter competitions in an calendar that has expanded from a few weeks in winter to shows from Fall through Spring, centered around the Winter Equestrian Festival and its $6 million in prize money.

Smiles and Havens Schatt Continue Winning Streak in Lucas Equine Equipment Performance Hunter 3’3″ Division

Wellington, FL – March 14, 2013 – Ireland’s Conor Swail and Chinook Valley, Inc.’s Martha Louise were victorious in Thursday’s $33,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 10 during week ten of the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival’s (FTI WEF), sponsored by Horseware Ireland.

Week ten’s competition runs March 13-17 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) featuring CSI 3* competition. Highlights include the $33,000 G&C Farm 1.45m on Friday, the $82,000 Horseware Ireland CSI 3* Grand Prix on Saturday, and the $33,000 Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic on Sunday.

Tomorrow night’s exciting line-up of events at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival at The Stadium includes the $10,000 Head-to-Head Competition over the high jump “Puissance” wall at 6 pm, the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle presented by Horseware Ireland under the lights at 7:30 pm, and The Yale Spizzwinks (?) A Capella singing performances. General admission and parking are free, and there will be fantastic raffle prizes handed out to general admission seat holders. It will be a night of power and grace for equestrian sport that you won’t want to miss!

The 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival features 12 weeks of competition running from January 9 – March 31, 2013, and will be awarding almost $7 million in prize money throughout the circuit.

Olaf Petersen, Jr. of Germany set the course in the International Arena for Thursday’s Challenge Cup class with 64 entries, 13 clear rounds to advance to the jump-off, and five double clear efforts over the short course. Conor Swail and Martha Louise, a nine-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare by Maloubet de Pleville 1039 x Wolfgang, had the leading time in 42.53 seconds.

Swail got Martha Louise last year and had a great season with many top placings, including wins in the Gijon and Dublin 5* shows in Europe. The mare is just starting up with her season this year and has not shown a lot yet, but proved to be back in form with a great win on Thursday.

“She kind of excelled herself today; she was just fantastic,” Swail smiled after the class. “She is a real good winner. She is a great horse to have on the truck and she is only nine years old. I have to say, she was very good today. I wasn’t really expecting her to be so good because she hasn’t been doing a lot and I thought she would be a bit rusty, but she was fantastic in the jump-off.”

Swail went second in the jump-off and had to beat a fast pace set down by Charlie Jacobs and Flaming Star. He explained his strategy.

“I was quite lucky because Charlie was first and I was second,” Swail stated. “I watched him closely because he is a fast rider and also whenever the ring is dragged, there are no other tracks, only his, so when I was riding around I could see his tracks. He was tight. He was very good one to two, he was tight to three. He was also very tight to the white oxer, but then coming down to the double he went ten (strides) and I went eight. I think that is where I got him. I took the risk of having the vertical down. I was quite narrow going into the double and I think that is where it paid off.”

With a smaller class and some of the top horses taking a break after last week’s CSI 5* competition, Swail thought the class was a perfect way for Martha Louise to start the season.

“She is a very kind horse,” he said of the mare. “She has a big, slow canter, but she also has a lot of quality and good scope. She is really nice. She could be inexperienced at this level. Sometimes she can worry a bit off the jump and sometimes I can press too hard and don’t totally trust that she will do it, so that we have to smooth out a little, but apart from that she does a lot of great things.”

Charlie Jacobs (USA) and CMJ Sporthorse LLC’s Flaming Star finished second in 43.72 seconds. Lauren Tisbo (USA) and Tequestrian Farms LLC’s Roundthorn Madios were third in 44.47 seconds. Heather Caristo-Williams and M/M Ralph Caristo’s Evening Star placed fourth in 44.49 seconds. Fifth place honors went to Japan’s Taizo Sugitani and Yvonne Young’s Avenzio 3 with their time of 47.39 seconds.

Along with his winning prize money, Swail was also presented with a special rider’s bonus for the SSG “Go Clean for the Green” promotion. A $3,000 bonus is offered each week if the winning rider of the Challenge Cup class is wearing the SSG ‘Digital’ Riding Gloves in all rounds of competition with the SSG logo clearly visible.

Smiles and Havens Schatt Continue Winning Streak in Lucas Equine Equipment Performance Hunter 3’3″ Division

Havens Schatt and Smiles had plenty to grin about after earning championship honors in the Lucas Equine Equipment Performance Hunter 3’3″ division during week ten of the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF). Schatt and Smiles, a ten-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Bruce Duchossois, bested the division with consistent performances over two days of competition. Day one, the pair won the under saddle and placed first and third over fences, followed by second and fourth place finishes on day two. Hayley Barnhill and Missy Luczak-Smith’s Surf’s Up were reserve champions after two blue ribbon finishes over fences on day two.

Schatt was eager to give Smiles a change of pace after he returned from some time away from the show ring. “He hasn’t shown for two weeks, so it was especially fun to show in a different ring,” Schatt admitted. “He’s never been in Ring 7 before, so he really had his ears up and we had a lot of fun with it.”

Havens Schatt and Smiles. Photo © Anne Gittins Photography
Havens Schatt and Smiles. Photo © Anne Gittins Photography

Schatt enjoyed the opportunity to ride one of her more mature mounts in a new environment. “Ring 7 can be hard because of the jumper horses being nearby. Today’s classes followed the Pre-Greens, so the courses were simple, but built very nicely. I deal with a lot of younger horses and so it was nice to be on an older horse that you know will be good in a new venue,” Schatt explained.

“I’ve been riding Smiles for about a year and a half, and he’s been a pleasure throughout,” she continued. “He does anything you ask him to do in any ring you ask him to do it in. He’s a very easygoing dude,” Schatt smiled.

While Schatt is no stranger to the winner’s circle with her talented string of hunter mounts, she especially appreciates her close bond with Smiles. “I know him really well and I know every time I get on him exactly what I have, which isn’t always the case with the young ones. He’s very consistent, which is really nice,” Schatt described.

Schatt and Smiles are currently in first place in the FTI WEF circuit championship standings for the division. Schatt credits their success to Smiles’ striking presentation and remarkable natural talent. “He’s bigger and he’s all chestnut, so he’s very elegant and stands out a little bit. He always jumps the same with great follow-through behind. He jumps as well behind as he does in front. He can jump high with so much ease, has beautiful movement across the ground, and you don’t have to pull on his mouth. He gets in one rhythm where everything just happens,” Schatt concluded.

Schatt will continue to ride Smiles for the duration of the FTI WEF in addition to owner Duchossois, who will return to the Amateur-Owner 3’3″ divisions with Smiles during week eleven of the FTI WEF. Week ten, sponsored by Horseware Ireland, will continue Friday when the Camping World Adult Hunter 51 & Over Section A names its champion in the Gene Mische Grand Hunter Arena. The $33,000 G&C Farm 1.45m will be featured in the International Arena during the day and the $35,000 G&C Farm Puissance will be held at The Stadium at PBIEC in the evening. Wellington, FL (March 14, 2013) – Nowhere was the beauty and power of dressage put to better use than on Saturday evening, March 9th during the 2013 Challenge of the Americas (COTA), where quadrille teams of Grand Prix horses danced elaborate routines to music to support breast cancer research and awareness.  Zerbino Interagro, ridden by trainer Cherri Reiber, demonstrated the baroque elegance of Lusitano dressage horse as they rode for Team International and helped boost the team to the highest score and the win during the 11th Annual Challenge of the Americas at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“Lusitanos like Zerbino Interagro are a special treat.  It is a beautiful breed to have participate in such an historically haute ecole performance.  It really hearkens back to the origins of dressage and classical horsemanship,” said COTA organizer, Mary Ross.

The equestrian Who’s Who list of COTA riders and guests, many whose lives have been touched by cancer, created a memorable evening of horsemanship in support, through Play for P.I.N.K., of the important work of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).  The Challenge, which celebrated its 11th year, has raised upwards of $1.8 million in funds directly benefiting BCRF research.

“I just keep wanting to raise more,” said a deeply appreciative Ross, who started the event in memory of her late mother, Jean Cruse, and her battle against cancer.  “I am so appreciative of the riders who come and perform.  They do it simply because cancer in some way has touched their lives.  They get nothing in return but dinner.”

The real winners, in addition to the beneficiaries, were the spectators, who were swept off their feet by the elegant equestrian synchronicity of the winning Team International sponsored by the Seley Parker Group of Merrill Lynch:  Todd Flettrich, Devon Kane, Susanne Hamilton, Nancy Later, Sharon McCusker and Cherri Reiber made mastering the quadrille pattern created by coaches and choreographers Ruth Hogan-Poulsen and Erin Swaney look effortless. Hogan-Poulsen’s musical compilation included hits by recent Oscar-winner Adele, as well as P!nk, David Guetta, and Bruno Mars.

The Challenge of the Americas began in 2002 as a luncheon exhibition at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby to its position today as a ‘must’ on the Florida equestrian scene’s March calendar.  Each year’s COTA features dressage alongside another equestrian sport, and this year’s spotlight was on bridleless reining performances with brothers Trevor and Rick Steed, and the special ‘return to the saddle’ by Mason Phelps, alternate for the 1968 US Olympic Three-Day Team, retired from the irons for 15 years. Phelps performed a disco Pas de Deux with US Olympic Bronze Medalist Debbie McDonald that drew cheers from appreciative fans.

Interagro Lusitanos, breeders of Zerbino Interagro were thrilled that one of their horses was on hand to contribute to the fund raising event. “We love to showcase these talented horses and it is even more exciting when it is for such a good cause,” said Cecilia Gonzaga, the Managing Director for Interagro Lusitanos in Itipira, Brazil.

Charlie Jacobs Jr. and Happy Endings Farm Enjoy Success in the Show Ring and Fun in the Sun

Wellington, FL – March 13, 2013 – The Children’s 14 & Under Hunter division is extremely competitive, but so are Charlie Jacobs, Jr. and Ranier. During week nine of the Winter Equestrian Festival, the pair topped the large, split classes of top horses and young riders to claim the reserve championship award for Happy Endings Farm.

Jacobs earned two red second place ribbons and a winning blue over the courses in Ring Seven, tallying enough points to earn him the tricolor award. In the Large Children’s Hunter Pony division, it was Maggie Robinson’s turn to shine. Robinson competed aboard Taschereau and Shenendoah Oasis, both owned by K. J. Robinson, LLC, earning ribbons on both mounts.

When not delivering impressive rounds in the show ring, Jacobs, Robinson and their Happy Endings Farm barnmates enjoy time in the saddle away from the ring. This weekend Happy Endings’ youthful riders took to the trails for a gorgeous afternoon trail ride. At the end of the trail, the children were rewarded with ice cream sundaes to celebrate the week, and a fantastic season so far. The following day it was off to Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, FL, for a Sunday polo lesson where the boys had a blast swinging their mallets and cantering the polo ponies.

“My approach to training involves building a relationship between the riders and their horses/ponies that is built upon trust and appreciation,” Smith-Faver stated. “I try to incorporate all kinds of activities within our program that do not involve horse show competition.”

Smith-Faver continued, “I don’t think any child or adult should be significantly influenced by one judge’s opinion, on one particular day, at any given horse show concerning their round. Although we are having a very successful WEF this year I think both the kids and adults should remember why they are doing this in the first place — it is supposed to be fun!”

Wellington, FL, March 13, 2013 – Week ten of the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF), sponsored by Horseware Ireland, featured the $33,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.45 speed class on Wednesday with a win for Germany’s Johannes Ehning and Cayenne 162. Earning points on the Longines FEI world ranking list, the pair won over Alise Oken (USA) riding Kaid Du Ry and Beezie Madden (USA) aboard Mademoiselle, with a lightning fast round.

Week ten’s FTI WEF competition will run March 13-17 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) featuring CSI 3* competition. Highlights include the $33,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 10 on Thursday, the $33,000 G&C Farm 1.45m on Friday, the $82,000 Horseware Ireland CSI 3* Grand Prix on Saturday, and the $33,000 Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic on Sunday. The $35,000 G&C Farm Puissance will be on Friday night at 6 p.m. at The Stadium at PBIEC. The 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival features 12 weeks of competition running from January 9 – March 31, 2013, and will be awarding almost $7 million in prize money throughout the circuit.

Olaf Petersen, Jr. of Germany is the course designer in the International Arena at PBIEC for week ten. Petersen set the speed track for 39 entries in Wednesday’s highlight FEI 1.45m class sponsored by Spy Coast Farm. The challenging course saw nine clear rounds.

Third in the order, Alise Oken was the first rider to clear the course aboard Hi Hopes Farm LLC’s Marcus Quintus and held the lead through a large part of the class with her time of 61.51 seconds. Nineteen rounds later, Beezie Madden and Abigail Wexner’s Mademoiselle stole the lead in 59.35 seconds. Two rounds after that, Oken returned aboard her second mount, Hi Hopes Farm LLC’s Kaid Du Ry, to reclaim her top spot with an even faster 58.92 seconds. They would both be beat a few rounds later when Johannes Ehning and Winley Farm LLC’s Cayenne 162 breezed through the timers in 58.87 seconds for the win.

Oken and Kaid Du Ry eventually finished second with Madden and Mademoiselle third. Japan’s Eiken Sato and Stephex Stables’ Viva jumped into the fourth position in 60.12 seconds, and Oken’s time with Markus Quintus placed fifth.

Cayenne 162, a ten-year-old Westphalian mare by Cornet Obolensky x Gonfaron, is a top speed horse for Ehning. The pair has had several good finishes in the last few weeks in Wellington and today was finally their day for a win.

“I think I am really lucky; I have a really fast horse and I had a few classes already where she was second and third,” Ehning noted. “We went today and we were really lucky to win it. I think you could not do so much in the course; you just needed a really fast horse, so it was a good round me and for my horse. We were successful.”

“I have brought her with me three years now to America and I think she really likes it here,” Ehning stated. “In the end of last year I was in Abu Dhabi with her on the Global Champions Tour and she placed in all three classes. She was second in a big class and the first day she won a class. She feels really good outside in big arenas.”

Commenting on Cayenne’s style, Ehning detailed, “She is crazy, but she is easy in the course. That is the easiest thing, to ride her in the course. With dressage work and warm-up it is difficult, but in the course she is doing her job all of the time. She likes to go fast and she is super careful. The quality is unbelievable from her.”

This will be Ehning’s last week in Wellington as he leaves on Monday, but he has enjoyed his time and was happy to get a win to kick off the final few days.

“I really like it here,” he smiled. “This year we only did three weeks here. Normally we do four or five weeks. We always want to come, but we are normally only able to do it every second year, but in the beginning of this year we decided to come for three weeks because it is really lovely.”

Ehning was also happy to get the win in the final class on Wednesday as he finished second in both of the classes held earlier in the day. In the $6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m jump-off, Sarah Segal and Horatio St. Ventures’ Tilghman and Cian O’Connor and Mary Chapot’s Zealous were both winners in a split class. Ehning and Nybor Pferde GMBH & Co. KG’s Appearance 2 and Todd Minikus aboard Karen Polle’s Udonnay Z were each second. In the $8,000 G&C Farm 1.45m jump-off, Alexandra Paillot guided Carol Sollak’s Brooklyn Blues to the win. Ehning and Appearance 2 were once again second.

Week ten of the FTI WEF will continue on Thursday with the $33,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 10 in the International Arena at 1 p.m. For full results, please visit www.showgroundslive.com.
