Beezie Madden Wins Canadian Pacific $1 Million Grand Prix FEI CSI-5*

SAUGERTIES, NY (September 8, 2015): Sunday at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York was anything but an average day of show jumping competition. Horse sport royalty descended on the Hudson Valley for the nation’s highest ranked class of the year, the Canadian Pacific $1 Million Grand Prix FEI CSI 5*, presented by Wells Fargo. Only one would be so lucky to return home with the big check and blue ribbon, and that one was none other than Beezie Madden, of Cazenovia, New York, aboard her iconic mount Simon, owned by Abigail Wexner.

Thousands of spectators filled the grandstand and hundreds more watched from the Legend VIP to get a glimpse of the historic event before them. The sixth annual seven-figure Grand Prix held in Saugerties debuted as a FEI CSI-5* on September 6 and attracted the top riders from across the world.

A field of forty-one gave it a go over the course set by Steve Stephens of Palmetto, Florida. It was evident as soon as the class began that the track demanded a high level of athletic ability and mental toughness with the first five entries scoring six faults or higher. Sixth to appear at the in-gate was a newcomer to the 5* circuit scene, Nikolaj Hein Ruus and Gerardo Pasquel’s Big Red.

They carefully completed the course with no jumping faults, but in a time of 94.650, just four seconds over the time allowed, leaving them with two time faults and the lead.

“This was my first 5*. I was very, very happy about it,” said Ruus. “He [Big Red] is a little inexperienced and for me, it’s my first really big show. I’ve only had him over the summer and I work him every day.”

“I always thought, ‘Could I compete with these guys? That would be so nice to find out one day.’ And here I am. It’s like a dream come true,” he continued.

Onlookers grew anxious, hoping for another clear round but the next twenty-six contenders entered and exited the ring with down rails in their path. Thirty-third in the order, Madden came into the ring with determination in her eyes, never veering from her plan for success.

They weaved through the course, navigating their way over the tricky Liverpool and above the sizeable triple bar that many others had trouble with. The crowd erupted in cheers as Madden crossed the timers with a clear track behind her and a time of 88.320 to bump Ruus from the top.

“I think it was a difficult course. I thought so even when we walked it,” said Madden. “This is about as hard as it gets other than the Olympics or World Championships.”

With only eight left in the order of go, each trip kept fans on the edge of their seats. Pablo Barrios riding his own Antares, Conor Swail piloting Ilan Ferder’s Viva Columbia, and 2014 Saugerties Million victors, Todd Minikus and Quality Girl, owned by Quality Group, all fought to follow in Madden’s footsteps and go clear but were unsuccessful in their efforts. Then, two-time Million winner McLain Ward and Sagamore Farms’ Rothchild entered the ring thirty-ninth, and anyone who’s anyone knew he would give Madden a run for her money.

Eager to make this his third $1 Million Grand Prix victory, Ward zipped through the course but had a rail at C of the triple for four faults and a time of 84.500 for third place.

“It started off right away with a big triple bar, then a very big power test with a double oxer with one stride which you don’t see too often. It really takes a world class horse,” said Ward about the course. “Later there was a very careful triple combination, three verticals with a Liverpool behind, and then some big single fences at the end. So you had many places to make a fault and I think you saw that.”

The final two riders of the afternoon, and the last two opportunities for a jump-off, were Margie Engle with Royce, owned by Elm Rock Partner’s LLC, and Daniel Bluman on his own Conconcreto Sancha LS. Both finished with 12 faults, leaving the current leaderboard intact and confirming a one round sweep for Madden.

From any seat in the house, Madden’s beaming smile prevailed as she reappeared for her victory gallop and took center stage once again.

“Simon went beautifully. The round went pretty much exactly as I wanted it to and he tried his heart out. I couldn’t be happier with him,” said Madden. “I’ve had him for three years and that was one of our best rounds ever.”

It was unanimous amongst the top finishers the impact 5* classes have on the sport and they graciously gave credit to HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri, as well as the sponsors.

“Thank you to Tom for making this a 5*, and for making Thermal a 5*,” said Madden. “It helps us as riders and brings more importance to the sport as well. I think that show today was a super day. Thank you Tom, Canadian Pacific, and Wells Fargo.”

Ward agreed, adding, “I think there were several parts of the course that were very hard – which it should be; it’s one of the biggest Grand Prix in the world. I think that the standard of horses and riders was very high this year, being a 5* event, and we can thank Tom for that.”

The HITS Championship marks the close of the eight week HITS Saugerties Series. The next event on the HITS competition schedule is the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals September 9-13 at HITS-on-the-Hudson. The Marshall & Sterling Insurance League is a grassroots organization dedicated to providing competition for up-and-coming Children’s and Adult Hunter, Jumper and Equitation riders.

Madden and Cortes ‘C’ Win 2nd Consecutive Longines King George V Gold Cup at Hickstead

Hickstead, GBR – Another exciting day of competition took place at CSIO5* Hickstead on Sunday as 42 athlete-and-horse combinations entered the International Arena in hopes of winning the Longines King George V Gold Cup. Beezie Madden made history with Cortes ‘C’ last year, becoming the first woman to ever win the prestigious Grand Prix. Following this year’s six horse jump-off, the pair did what did not seem possible and claimed the win once again.

“I thought Cortes was amazing, as he usually is. The first round was great and the jump-off was even better; everything just kept coming up right,” Madden explained. “It feels amazing, but I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet. I have a great team behind me, including Abigail Wexner, who is a fantastic owner. When you have a great day, it feels really good to have done it for the team.”

In the first round of the Longines King George V Gold Cup, two U.S. combinations moved forward to the jump-off after having faultless rounds over Kelvin Bywater’s large track. Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Abigail Wexner’s 2002 Belgian Warmblood gelding had an excellent first round, as did teammates from Friday’s Nations Cup, Todd Minikus and Babalou 41, a 2005 Oldenburg mare owned by Two Swans Farm.

With six combinations returning for the jump-off, it proved to be an exciting finish. Though some came close, none went clear under the time of 43.06 laid down by Madden and Cortes ‘C’, earning them top honors for the second year in a row. Minikus (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Babalou 41 had a single rail in a time of 44.32 to finish sixth. Penelope Leprevost (FRA) and Flora de Mariposa were second with a time of 43.42, while Jur Vrieling (NED) and Vdl Zirocco Blue N.O.P. were third with a time of 49.54.

US Show Jumping Team Finishes 3rd in Exciting Finish for FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain

Hickstead, GBR – The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team put forth a great effort in Friday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines at CSIO5* Hickstead. At the end of the two rounds, the U.S. team, consisting of Laura Kraut, Charlie Jayne, Beezie Madden, and Todd Minikus, was tied with Belgium and Switzerland with a total of four faults, requiring a jump-off. Madden returned to the Hickstead Stadium with Cortes ‘C’, but an unlucky eight-fault round put the U.S. team in third place at the end of an exciting day of competition.

“First off, it was a spectacular Nations Cup, with good weather and great footing at probably one of the most traditional venues there is here at Hickstead. Our team had a really good day today,” said Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “We put ourselves right in the mix, which we always seem to do. We had a very good second round, as we have several times this year. Then jump-offs, of course, are where things are won in the sport. We would have loved it if we won, but we are honored to be in the position we are in and finish.”

The U.S. team began its day at the Longines Royal International Horse Show jumping sixth in the order of eight teams. Pathfinders Kraut and Nouvelle, the Evita Group’s 2004 KWPN mare, had a single rail at fence nine for four faults. Jayne was next with Alex Jayne and Maura Thatcher’s 2003 Zangersheide stallion, Chill R Z, having a rail at fence two and a single time fault for a total of five faults. Minikus and Babalou 41, a 2005 Oldenburg mare owned by Two Swans Farm, laid down the first clear round for the U.S. team. Madden and Cortes ‘C’ followed suite by scoring another clear round, giving the U.S. team a first round total of four faults, putting them in third place.

For the second round, Kraut and Nouvelle improved upon their initial performance to go clear. Jayne and Chill R Z unfortunately had rails at fences nine and 12 for eight faults. Minikus and Babalou 41 and Madden and Cortes ‘C’ went clear to be amongst the nine combinations to have double-clear rounds. Adding nothing to its first-round total of four, the U.S. team was tied with Belgium and Switzerland at the end of the second round, leading to a jump-off to determine the winning team.

Madden and Cortes ‘C’ were chosen for the jump-off and were the first combination to enter the arena. However, a win was not meant to be, as a rail came down at 4A followed by a runout at 4B for eight faults. Belgium claimed top honors as Pieter Devos and Dylano clocked a clear round in a time of 42.60 to finish ahead of Switzerland’s Janika Sprunger and Bonne Chance Cw with their clear round in a time of 44.17.

Todd Minikus and Con Capilot Top $34,000 WestJet Cup

Calgary, AB, Canada – June 26, 2015 – The ‘Canada One’ Tournament at Spruce Meadows continued on Friday, with two international competitions featured in the Meadows on the Green, and wins for USA’s Beezie Madden and Todd Minikus. Madden won the $34,000 Duncan Ross Cup 1.50m riding Abigail Wexner’s Simon. Minikus topped the $34,000 WestJet Cup 1.45m aboard Nancy Gooding’s Con Capilot.

The ‘Canada One’ Tournament features over $431,000 in prize money with top horses and riders from around the world competing in eight FEI sanctioned events through Sunday, June 28. The weekend’s headlining events include the $34,000 CIBC Cup, the $34,000 West Canadian Cup, and the $126,000 Imperial Challenge.

Peter Grant (CAN) set the courses in the Meadows on the Green for Friday’s international competition. The evening’s feature Duncan Ross Cup 1.50m saw 50 entries in total, with five advancing to the jump-off where Beezie Madden and Simon emerged victorious.

Margie Engle (USA) and Elm Rock LLC’s Royce set the pace with a double clear round in 44.67 seconds to eventually finish in reserve. Nina Fagerstrom (FIN) and Finca Horses, Inc.’s Flower followed with a clear short track in 44.67 seconds, landing the pair in third place overall. Madden and Simon took the lead next with their clear round in 43.37 seconds. Todd Minikus and Two Swans Farm’s Babalou 41 were faster in 41.05 seconds, but settled for fourth place with a rail at the final fence. Last to go, Sameh el Dahan (EGY) crossed the timers in 43.41 seconds, but one rail came down to put the rider in fifth place aboard his own and Joanne Sloan-Allen’s Sumas Zorro.

Second in all-time prize money winners at Spruce Meadows only to Canada’s Eric Lamaze, Madden is no stranger to the winner’s circle in Calgary. This was the rider’s first win in this year’s Summer Series, however, and she was happy to lead the victory gallop.

“It is my first win here this year, and I was not here last year, so it feels good to win here again,” Madden acknowledged.

Both the first round course and short track suited Madden’s mount, Simon, a 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Mr. Blue x Polydox).

“When there are not as many in the jump-off it is good for me. I can’t always let him run really fast because he gets pretty strong,” Madden explained. “He was actually particularly good today in the jump-off and I was able to kind of keep him under control in the turns. He made really good turns to the double and to the second to last fence.”

“I figured Todd is always going to go faster than me and Sameh is also very fast with that horse, so I thought that I should just do what works for me and hope it was good enough. It ended up working out, but I got a little lucky,” Madden admitted.

Speaking of the first round track, Madden added, “It was an excellent course for me because the distances were all a little short and I could make my horse wait. Not only was it a good course for me to do, but it was also a good set up for Sunday’s grand prix for me. It was a very technical course to make the horse add strides and he did it well.”

After his winning round, Simon casually strolled in to accept the winning prize. Madden noted that he enjoys the ceremony and wears his winning cooler with pride.

“He looks like a hot horse because he is so strong, but he is actually kind of a relaxed horse when he is not in competition mode,” Madden detailed. “He knows he is done and he is going in for ribbons. He can eat some grass, so he likes that.”

Minikus Flies to Victory

Friday’s first competition in the Meadows on the Green was the $34,000 WestJet Cup 1.45m, which saw 77 entries compete, with 22 clear rounds to advance to the jump-off. Eight of those entries then cleared the short course without fault. USA’s Todd Minikus took the victory in a blazing fast time of 35.48 seconds aboard Nancy Gooding’s 12-year-old Westphalian stallion, Con Capilot (Con Capitol x Pilot).

Eric Lamaze (CAN) finished second with Artisan Farms and Torrey Pines Stable’s Rosana du Park in 36.71 seconds. Shane Sweetnam (IRL) guided Sweet Oak Farm’s Easy Contact Humlan to third place honors in 37.38 seconds.

Con Capilot was previously ridden by California’s Mandy Porter for several years and had a lot of good results. The horse’s owner then sent him to Minikus at the end of the winter this year to be sold.

“He is a beautiful, drop dead gorgeous horse,” Minikus stated. “He has great technique over the jumps. He is quick in the air; there is no wasted energy, and that is what it takes to win.”

Minikus showed Con Capilot in Kentucky this spring and explained that he did not have great results in the first two weeks at Spruce Meadows, but continues improving.

“It seemed like it took my horses a while to get going on the grass. Or maybe it took me a while to get going on the grass, I don’t know which,” Minikus laughed. “Yesterday he was fifth in a nice competition and then obviously today he went great.”

“I watched the first couple riders go (in the jump-off) and there were some fast rounds,” Minikus detailed. “Then I was up in the warm-up ring flatting and all the likely suspects started showing up. When Eric (Lamaze) took the lead, for sure I knew it was fast, so I just tried to cheat everywhere I could and somehow it was good enough.”

The ‘Canada One’ Tournament continues on Saturday featuring a $34,000 Friends of the Meadows 1.45m competition in the morning followed by the $34,000 CIBC Cup 1.50m.

Andres Rodriguez and Caballito Win $34,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.45m Speed; Clean Sweep for Iconic and Amanda Lyerly in the Loddon Stalls Pre-Green Hunter 3 & 4 Year Olds

Wellington, FL – March 26, 2015 – The Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Series concluded on Thursday with its twelfth and final round of competition at the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). For the second year in a row, Beezie Madden (USA) and Abigail Wexner’s Cortes ‘C’ were the winners in the $50,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 12. The duo, named 2014 USEF Equestrian and International Horse of the Year, easily laid down the winning track. Conor Swail (IRL) and Grand Cru vd Jijf Eiken finished second; Tiffany Foster (CAN) and Tripple X III placed third.

Watch Beezie Madden and Cortes ‘C’ in their winning round!

The second $34,000 1.45m FEI speed class of the week was also held on Thursday with a win for Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez and Caballito. They jumped the fastest of 15 clear rounds out of 75 competitors with Kent Farrington (USA) and Cha Cha Cha 7 in second and Alvaro Tejada (GUA) with Voltaral Palo Blanco third.

WEF 12, sponsored by Rolex, runs March 25-29. The week features the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* on Saturday, March 28. Other highlights include the $10,000 Holtgers 5-Year-Old Young Jumper Classic, $15,000 Adequan® 6-Year-Old Young Jumper Classic, and $20,000 Adequan® 7-Year-Old Young Jumper Classic on Friday. The $100,000 Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic Final will be held on Saturday, and the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby will host its first round on Saturday and its second round on the derby field Sunday. Saturday night’s 1.50m Final Round and Rolex Grand Prix, along with Sunday’s second round of the hunter derby, will be live streamed at www.COTH.com.

Steve Stephens (USA) set the track for 46 starters in Thursday’s WEF Challenge Cup. Nine advanced to the jump-off, where seven of those jumped double clear. Last to go, Beezie Madden and Cortes ‘C’ clocked the winning time of 35.52 seconds. They edged out Conor Swail and Grand Cru vd Jijf Eiken, owned by Vanessa Mannix, with their time of 35.99 seconds. Tiffany Foster and Artisan Farms LLC’s Tripple X III set the pace, first to go in the jump-off in 36.48 seconds, finishing in third. McLain Ward (USA) and Double H Farm’s HH Azur placed fourth in 37.09 seconds.

Believe it or not, Thursday’s win was actually Madden’s first of the year. She was happy to see Cortes ‘C’ in top form and knew that Stephen’s track suited her mount, a 13-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding (Randel Z x Darco).

“This is my first win of the whole season. I have been second a couple times, but it feels great to win in week 12. It feels great to not go through the whole circuit without winning,” Madden laughed. “My horses have been going well. We have not put a lot of pressure on them yet, so it was nice that Cortes came through this week.”

“Today I went for it,” Madden said. “The jump-off suited him. It was not a real running track where you had to fly to the fences. I could make neat turns without running a lot, and still be quite fast today, so it was a good jump-off for that.”

Madden picked Cortes ‘C’ to show in the final week because of the tracks she expected from Stephens in the final CSI 5* competition.

“Usually he builds a course for a nice, big, scopey horse, so hopefully it will suit Cortes Saturday night too,” Madden explained. “The top few were all big, scopey horses today. This is a 5*, so it should be difficult this week. You can kind of plan on that.”

Madden will show Cortes in Saturday night’s $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* to conclude the circuit and then plans to give the gelding a rest while her mount Simon steps up to compete in Miami and then travels to Las Vegas for World Cup Finals.

“Cortes feels really good. This is only his third week of showing, so I think he is just coming on to form for the year,” Madden detailed. “After this, he will have a bit of a break. I am going to take Simon to the World Cup (Finals) because the venue in Las Vegas is so small that I think it suits him more than Cortes. Cortes will probably do a few classes at Old Salem in the spring, and then I am planning to take him to Aachen for the grand prix in May. Then he will go to Spruce Meadows from there. Simon will also do Miami to get ready for the smaller venue in Vegas. It is good for me to practice with him in the smaller ring.”

Andres Rodriguez and Caballito Win $34,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.45m

A $34,000 1.45m FEI speed class was also held at WEF on Thursday with a win for Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez and Caballito. Seventy-five entries showed, with 15 clear rounds. Rodriguez and Arao Enterprises Caballito had a blazing fast time of 62.13 seconds. They beat Kent Farrington’s round in 63.31 seconds with Haity McNerney and Amalaya Investments’ Cha Cha Cha 7. Alvaro Tejada (GUA) with Palo Blanco Stables’ Voltaral Palo Blanco stopped the clock in 63.73 seconds. Conor Swail (IRL) and Simba de la Roque placed fourth in 65.36 seconds.

Andres Rodriguez and Caballito
Andres Rodriguez and Caballito

Rodriguez has had a fantastic WEF circuit, with multiple wins, including a big win with Caballito in week ten’s $127,000 Horseware Ireland Grand Prix CSI 3*. On Thursday, the 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Contendro x Argentinus) took the class by storm in a fantastic round.

“It was very fast today,” Rodriguez stated. “It was sort of one of those classes where you go all in, and if it works, it works. Our plan at the beginning was to take a lot of risk and if a rail comes down, then we school the horse for the 1.50m class that has $100,000, but if everything keeps going then obviously keep going. I was going pretty fast in the last line, which when I walked it, I thought it was crazy to do six strides. But I jumped the vertical and it was right there, so I took the chance and it worked.”

“When I saw Conor’s round, I said, ‘Okay, this is really annoying because it is getting very fast.’ Then Kent almost beat him by two seconds, and then it was to the point where I had to go all in,” Rodriguez continued. “Kent did seven strides. I did one stride less than him from jump four to five. I did eight strides and he did nine strides, and on the last line he did seven and I did six.”

Rodriguez plans to jump Caballito again in Saturday’s $100,000 Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic Final to conclude the circuit. The pair finished second in the class last year. He will jump his horse Verdi in the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*.

Also showing on Thursday, the Adequan® 6-Year-Old Young Jumpers jumped their speed class in the International Arena with a win for Gemma Paternoster and Julia Harrison Lee’s EBay.

Clean Sweep for Iconic and Amanda Lyerly in the Loddon Stalls Pre-Green Hunter 3 & 4 Year Olds

To conclude WEF 2015 on a high note, Amanda Lyerly rode Kelly Bauernschmidt’s horse, Iconic, to the championship prize in the Loddon Stalls Pre-Green Hunter 3 & 4 Year Olds. The pair was dominant over the two days of competition, winning all of the classes in the division. “We bought him [Iconic] for Kelly [Bauernschmidt] to do in the amateur hunter divisions eventually, but I feel very lucky that I get to show him right now,” Lyerly explained.

Reserve championship honors in the Loddon Stalls Pre-Green Hunter 3 & 4 Year Olds went to Grayceland and Thomas Serio. Grayceland, an entry of Kathy Serio, finished second in two over fences classes and was third in the under saddle.

Iconic, a four-year-old gelding, had never been to the WEF show grounds until this past Tuesday. “Kelly [Bauernschmidt] bough him [Iconic] 10 days ago,” Lyerly started. “When we brought him over to the show we didn’t know what to expect, but he is an old soul and was great in the ring.”

Lyerly further went on to compliment Iconic, saying, “He is so sweet on the ground and is very straight forward and simple to ride. He is definitely one of the nicest horses I have ever ridden!”

After starting with such a great performance, Lyerly is excited about Iconic’s future. “I didn’t really have any goals before this week, but after how he went, I’m excited to show him in the pre-greens and eventually the First Year Green Hunters,” Lyerly commented.

For the rest of this year, Lyerly is hoping to show Iconic in the Pre Green incentive classes in the summer and Future Hunter classes held at Capital Challenge in the fall.

WEF 12 continues on Friday featuring the $10,000 Holtgers 5-Year-Old Young Jumper Classic, $15,000 Adequan® 6-Year-Old Young Jumper Classic, and $20,000 Adequan® 7-Year-Old Young Jumper Classic in the International Arena. The Triple Crown Adult Amateur Hunter 36-49 Section A kicks off hunter competition Friday morning in the Rost Arena. For full results and more information, please visit www.pbiec.com.

“East Meets West” – Big Names Launch Longines FEI World Cup Jumping North American League

Jessica Springsteen addresses the media at today’s launch of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping™ North American League at SPORTELAmerica in Miami (USA). (FEI/Mark Serota/AP)

Miami (USA), 17 March 2015 – The brand new Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League was launched in Miami (USA) today by three of the biggest names in the sport – Beezie Madden, the most decorated US female equestrian athlete of all time and currently the only woman in the top 10 of the Longines world rider rankings, American Gold Cup winner and FEI Solidarity Ambassador Jessica Springsteen, and Hannah Selleck, team and individual gold medallist at young rider level and one of the sport’s up-and-coming stars.

The trio, who all started riding almost as soon as they could walk, are already gearing up for the new league, which kicks off in August 2015 across seven East and seven West Coast venues in three countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The North American League boasts a minimum of US $2.4 million prize money across the series, and offers the best Jumping athletes from North America and around the world the chance to qualify for the jackpot of more than US $1.4 million (€1.3 million) on offer annually at the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final.

Elegance is an attitude

“Longines’ motto is ‘elegance is an attitude.’ It’s true of their core business but it also rings true for equestrian sport,” Beezie Madden said. “Our sport is about elegance and the harmony we achieve with our horses is essential to success. Longines is the perfect partner for equestrian sport.”

“We are part of an exceptional sport because we get to rely on a very special partner: the horse,” Jessica Springsteen said. “Our horses are so much more than an animal. They are hard-working talented athletes with their own personalities. It’s an awesome sport and I’m so excited to share my passion for it with you today.”

“Horses are a great leveler,” Hannah Selleck said. “As riders we know that you can be winning one day, and on the ground the next. Riders can have very long careers which last for many years. Some of the more mature riders are old enough to be my father, but I quite like the one I’ve got!”

The 14 events* that will host legs of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping™ North American League were selected after a rigorous screening process from a long list of 25 applicants. Impressively, 11 of the events featured in the recently published North American Riders Group Top 25 rankings.

The Longines FEI World Cup Jumping™ North American League will be showcased on a broad range of global platforms, from live TV broadcasts to streaming on digital outlets and mobile, focusing on the drama of equestrian sport with fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary-style coverage.

US passion

“The Longines FEI World Cup Jumping North American League is a massive boost to our sport and will dominate the headlines in 2015,” FEI 1st Vice-President and Chair of the FEI Jumping Committee John Madden (USA) said. “The new league is a huge opportunity for our athletes to shine on a North American stage and showcase top-level equestrian sport to fans across North America and the world.

“This league is also ideally suited to wide-ranging global brands that want to reach out to North American and international audiences, drawing very clear affinities with their own visions and values alongside Longines.”

Longines equestrian boost

Longines, the FEI’s Official Top Partner, Timekeeper and Watch of the FEI, is a major supporter of the Olympic sport of Jumping around the world, and is already title partner of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Western European League and Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping China League.

Longines is now looking forward to supporting the further growth of Jumping across North America as the official Title Partner and Watch of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League. In addition, Longines will also provide a dedicated timekeeping team and data handling service for each of the 14 legs.

“We are proud to be partnering the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League,” Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President of Longines and Head of International Marketing said. “This association is part of our long-term commitment with the FEI as we are its Top Partner, but also the Title Partner, Official Timekeeper and Watch of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Western European League, Chinese League and, as of today, the North American League.”

The Swiss watchmaker’s timing heritage in the United States goes back to the 1870s, and by 1886 the company’s popular chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount was being used by most sport judges in New York.

To celebrate this time-honoured legacy and the launch of the new league, the coveted Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping trophy will be showcased at Morays Jewelers boutique in Miami, before being transported to Las Vegas for this year’s Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final. The world’s best riders, including many of those that will go on to contest the new season North American League, will be bidding to be crowned the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping champion in Vegas (15-19 April).

Today’s launch was held at SPORTELAmerica, the annual sports media industry convention in the USA.

Keenan and Madden Determine Winning Team in Ride-off at the Fete Cheval Etoile

Beezie Madden on Lilly Higgins’ Zinnia.

It came down to a ride-off between Lillie Keenan and Beezie Madden on February 20th, but the seven teams of grand prix riders were not just jumping against the clock in the EQUUS Foundation’s first Best Performance Team Invitational. The top ranked riders were being judged by legends George H. Morris and Katie Prudent on their style under the lights in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida.

“It was a lot of fun, and it’s nice to be able to participate in a class that gives back to the horses that do so much for us,” Keenan explained. “The EQUUS Foundation is a great organization not only for the horses but also for how horses can help people. We all do this sport because we love the horse.” Madden added, “We all just love to do something to benefit such a great organization like the EQUUS Foundation. It was a great night for us to have a little fun.”

Each rider was awarded a score out of 100 from the judges, and the lowest score from each team was dropped. At the end of the first round, Beezie Madden rose to the top as the individual front-runner, claiming the title of Best Individual Performance with a score of 99.

While Madden was the clear individual winner, the team competition came down to the wire and a showdown between the Ariat/Animal Planet team, composed of Madden, Georgina Bloomberg and Nicole Shahanian-Simpson, and the CallariCars.com team of Rodrigo Pessoa, Lillie Keenan and Ali Wolff.

Sitting tied with each other, each team elected one representative to return for a ride-off, with Madden coming forward for team Ariat/Animal Planet and Keenan stepping up to the plate for team CallariCars.com. With a rail down, Madden’s score of 90 fell short to Keenan’s score of 96, clinching the first Best Performance Team title for the CallariCars.com team.

The climatic ride-off marked the successful end to an evening that celebrated the positive impact that horses have in our lives. Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President, spoke briefly and introduced the new EQUUS Foundation video produced by the Infamous Productions team of James Wooster and Brian Lookabill, who served as Emcee.

Jenny Belknap Kees, EQUUS Foundation Chairman, and Chrystine Tauber, USEF President, announced the ten new inductees into the Horse Stars Hall of Fame and honored the owners who were able to attend.

Guests attending the EQUUS Foundation’s Fete Cheval Etoile were the first to applaud the amazing horses when the stories of their athletic and humanitarian feats were revealed at the event and on the Horse Stars Hall of Fame website.

The EQUUS Foundation partnered with the United States Equestrian Foundation (USEF) in 2013 to establish the Horse Stars Hall of Fame to honor the extraordinary talent of horses and the bond between horses and people.

Hosted annually by the EQUUS Foundation, the Fete Cheval Etoile helps raise funds to support equine charities that are improving the lives of horses, promoting the use of horses to enrich lives and educating the public about the horse’s unique abilities to empower, teach and heal.

Since its inception, the EQUUS Foundation has awarded nearly $3 million in grants and over 800 equine organizations across the United States participate on the Foundation’s Equine Welfare Network. The EQUUS Foundation is the only national animal welfare organization that is dedicated solely to horse welfare.
