Madden and Cortes ‘C’ Win 2nd Consecutive Longines King George V Gold Cup at Hickstead

Hickstead, GBR – Another exciting day of competition took place at CSIO5* Hickstead on Sunday as 42 athlete-and-horse combinations entered the International Arena in hopes of winning the Longines King George V Gold Cup. Beezie Madden made history with Cortes ‘C’ last year, becoming the first woman to ever win the prestigious Grand Prix. Following this year’s six horse jump-off, the pair did what did not seem possible and claimed the win once again.

“I thought Cortes was amazing, as he usually is. The first round was great and the jump-off was even better; everything just kept coming up right,” Madden explained. “It feels amazing, but I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet. I have a great team behind me, including Abigail Wexner, who is a fantastic owner. When you have a great day, it feels really good to have done it for the team.”

In the first round of the Longines King George V Gold Cup, two U.S. combinations moved forward to the jump-off after having faultless rounds over Kelvin Bywater’s large track. Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Abigail Wexner’s 2002 Belgian Warmblood gelding had an excellent first round, as did teammates from Friday’s Nations Cup, Todd Minikus and Babalou 41, a 2005 Oldenburg mare owned by Two Swans Farm.

With six combinations returning for the jump-off, it proved to be an exciting finish. Though some came close, none went clear under the time of 43.06 laid down by Madden and Cortes ‘C’, earning them top honors for the second year in a row. Minikus (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Babalou 41 had a single rail in a time of 44.32 to finish sixth. Penelope Leprevost (FRA) and Flora de Mariposa were second with a time of 43.42, while Jur Vrieling (NED) and Vdl Zirocco Blue N.O.P. were third with a time of 49.54.

US Show Jumping Team Finishes 3rd in Exciting Finish for FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain

Beezie Madden and Cortes ‘C’ (© Julian Portch Photography 2015)

Hickstead, GBR – The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team put forth a great effort in Friday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines at CSIO5* Hickstead. At the end of the two rounds, the U.S. team, consisting of Laura Kraut, Charlie Jayne, Beezie Madden, and Todd Minikus, was tied with Belgium and Switzerland with a total of four faults, requiring a jump-off. Madden returned to the Hickstead Stadium with Cortes ‘C’, but an unlucky eight-fault round put the U.S. team in third place at the end of an exciting day of competition.

“First off, it was a spectacular Nations Cup, with good weather and great footing at probably one of the most traditional venues there is here at Hickstead. Our team had a really good day today,” said Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “We put ourselves right in the mix, which we always seem to do. We had a very good second round, as we have several times this year. Then jump-offs, of course, are where things are won in the sport. We would have loved it if we won, but we are honored to be in the position we are in and finish.”

The U.S. team began its day at the Longines Royal International Horse Show jumping sixth in the order of eight teams. Pathfinders Kraut and Nouvelle, the Evita Group’s 2004 KWPN mare, had a single rail at fence nine for four faults. Jayne was next with Alex Jayne and Maura Thatcher’s 2003 Zangersheide stallion, Chill R Z, having a rail at fence two and a single time fault for a total of five faults. Minikus and Babalou 41, a 2005 Oldenburg mare owned by Two Swans Farm, laid down the first clear round for the U.S. team. Madden and Cortes ‘C’ followed suite by scoring another clear round, giving the U.S. team a first round total of four faults, putting them in third place.

For the second round, Kraut and Nouvelle improved upon their initial performance to go clear. Jayne and Chill R Z unfortunately had rails at fences nine and 12 for eight faults. Minikus and Babalou 41 and Madden and Cortes ‘C’ went clear to be amongst the nine combinations to have double-clear rounds. Adding nothing to its first-round total of four, the U.S. team was tied with Belgium and Switzerland at the end of the second round, leading to a jump-off to determine the winning team.

Madden and Cortes ‘C’ were chosen for the jump-off and were the first combination to enter the arena. However, a win was not meant to be, as a rail came down at 4A followed by a runout at 4B for eight faults. Belgium claimed top honors as Pieter Devos and Dylano clocked a clear round in a time of 42.60 to finish ahead of Switzerland’s Janika Sprunger and Bonne Chance Cw with their clear round in a time of 44.17.

Madden Speeds to Historic Win in the Longines King George V Gold Cup at CSIO5* Hickstead

Beezie Madden and Cortes ‘C’ (Peter Martin-Turner/Spidge Photo for Shannon Brinkman Photography)

Hickstead, United Kingdom – Beezie Madden added another coveted title to her extensive resume on Sunday when she rode Abigail Wexner’s Cortes ‘C’ to victory in the Longines King George V Gold Cup at CSIO5* Hickstead. In doing so, she also made history as the first women ever to win the prestigious Grand Prix.

Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and the 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding were one of 14 combinations to jump Kelvin Bywater’s 12-obstacle track faultlessly and qualify to return for the jump-off. The pair, which had jumped double clear in Friday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines, had the advantageous position of returning as the final competitors in the jump-off and seized the opportunity with both hands jumping clear and stopping the timers in 46.01 to seal their win by more than a full second.

Making the two-time Olympic Gold medalist’s win all the more impressive is that she only recently returned to competition after breaking her collarbone in May.

Also joining Madden in the jump-off was American pair Laura Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla,) and the Evita Group’s 10-year-old KWPN mare, Nouvelle. The pair was clear over the jumps in a time of 54.04 to finish in sixth place.

Reed Kessler and McLain Ward earned 16th and 21st places, respectively, in the feature Grand Prix. Kessler (Lexington, Ky.) and Kessler Show Stables’ 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, Cylana, were the second quickest four faulters of the afternoon over Bywater’s course finishing the initial round in 78.89 seconds. Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) and Double H Farm’s 10-year-old Holsteiner stallion, HH Cannavaro, also jumped a four fault round, stopping the timers in 79.90 seconds.

Rounding out the U.S. competitors in the Longines King George V Gold Cup were Margie Engle (Wellington, Fla.) and Elm Rock Partners, LLC’s 10-year-old Oldenburg stallion, Royce, finishing in 31st place after an eight fault round.

Madden’s victory comes on the heels of double Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup victories this week for the United States. On Friday, the Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team were the victors of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines in Hickstead and the U.S. team at CSIO5* Gijon followed up with a victory of their own in Nations Cup competition on Saturday.

“Beezie’s win is icing on the cake as we close in on our WEG (2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games) preparation. Winning two CSIO5* Nations Cups accompanied by Beezie’s comeback is a tremendous boost for the team as we head down the final stretch,” said U.S. Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland.

Ireland’s Bertram Allen and Romanov finished second in Sunday’s Grand Prix jumping clear in the jump-off in a time of 47.09, with Germany’s Marcus Ehning and Plot Blue earning third place after jumping clear in a time of 47.91.

Hermès US Show Jumping Team Victorious at CSIO5* Hickstead

McLain Ward and Rothchild (FEI/ Action Images)

Hickstead, United Kingdom – The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team produced another impressive performance in Nations Cup competition on Friday. Two weeks after jumping to a second-place finish in the Mercedes-Benz FEI Nations Cup at CSIO5* Aachen, the United States went one better to win the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines at CSIO5* Hickstead. Led by Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland, the team of McLain Ward, Reed Kessler, Margie Engle, and Beezie Madden finished on an overall total of four faults after two rounds of jumping over Kelvin Bywater’s 12-obstacle track. In round one, the U.S. came out firing on all cylinders to finish round one on a clean sheet and maintain its top form to add only four faults in the second round.

“They were brilliant as a team – no other way to describe it,” said Ridland of his team of Friday.

Round One

Ward (Brewster, N.Y.), riding Sagamore Farms’ 13-year-old Warmblood gelding, Rothchild, jumped in his customary lead-off position for the U.S., which had drawn second in the order. As he has done in numerous Nations Cups over the years, the two-time Olympic Gold medalist produced a faultless round, setting the tone for the day.

Jumping second in the order were the 2012 Olympic Games veterans Kessler (Lexington, Ky.) and Cylana. Kessler Show Stables’ 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare looked poised to produce a duplicate clear round, but rails on the latter half of the course, at eight and 10B, meant the pair would be the drop score in round one with eight faults.

Engle (Wellington, Fla.) was next up for the U.S. with Elm Rock Partners, LLC’s Royce. The Olympic and World Championship veteran demonstrated all of her experience as she guided the scopey 10-year-old Oldenburg stallion to a fault-free effort.

As the anchor rider, Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) knew that if she could also produce a clear, the U.S. would head into round two on a score of zero. The 2013 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping Final champion did just that with Abigail Wexner’s 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Cortes ‘C’, jumping an immaculate fault-free round that never looked in doubt.

Round Two

Ward and Rothchild again jumped first for the United States, replicating their faultless first round performance to be one of only five combinations to produce a double-clear on Friday.

Jumping in the second and third spots were Kessler and Engle, respectively, who both produced four-fault performances in round two. Kessler and Cylana had an improved trip in their return effort, lowering the plank at fence four, Engle and Royce’s chance to add their names to the double-clear list were spoiled when they faulted jumping out of the double at six.

Madden, who recently returned to competition after spending two months out of the saddle due to a broken collarbone, entered Hickstead’s prestigious arena needing to produce a clear round in order for the U.S. to avoid a jump-off with The Netherlands and Germany. Just as in round one, Cortes ‘C’ made light work of the 12-effort track to join the list of five double-clears and clinched victory for the United States.

The U.S. is using Nations Cup competition at CSIO5*s Rotterdam, Aachen, Hickstead and next week in Dublin as preparation for all 10 members of the Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Short List for 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games ahead of the World Championships as well as the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Final in October.

“We’re here for preparation and we’re in great shape, to have all 10 (short list members) here at these shows is great,” said Ridland. “Preparation is going as well as we could hope for.”

The Netherlands and Germany tied for second place in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines on eight-fault totals.

US Teams Ready for Nations Cup Action in Hickstead and Gijon

Lexington, Ky. – The United States has high hopes of strong finishes in European CSIO5* Nations Cup competition this week, as they field teams in both Hickstead, England and Gijon, Spain.

In Friday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain presented by Longines at CSIO5* Hickstead, the U.S. sends a veteran team into competition. McLain Ward, Reed Kessler, Margie Engle, and Beezie Madden look to showcase the form that earned them spots on the Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Short List for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team, led by Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland, has drawn second in the order of eight teams for Hickstead’s Nations Cup.

Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) will ride Sagamore Farms’ Rothchild.
Rotchild is a 2001 Warmblood gelding.

A double Olympic Gold medalist, Ward heads into Hickstead’s competition on remarkable form after earning multiple victories in June and July at the Spruce Meadows Tournaments. With Rothchild, he was the winner of the CP Grand Prix of the final day of the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows ‘Continental’ Tournament. In May, the pair was the winner of the Antwerp Grand Prix on the first stop of the 2014 Longines Global Champions Tour.

Kessler (Lexington, Ky.) will ride Kessler Show Stables’ Cylana.
Cylana is a 2002 Belgian Warmblood mare.

Two weeks ago, Kessler and Cylana were valuable members of the Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team that earned second place in the Mercedes-Benz FEI Nations Cup at CSIO5* Aachen. Before heading to Aachen, the 2012 USEF National Co-Champions earned a third-place finish in a Speed Class at CSI5* Paris. In Hickstead, Kessler joins her teammates from the 2012 Olympic Games, Ward and Madden.

Engle (Wellington, Fla.) will ride Elm Rock Partners, LLC’s Royce.
Royce is a 2004 Oldenburg stallion.

Engle, a 2000 Olympic Games veteran and 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games Team Silver medalist, looks to utilize the vast experience that has guided her to more than 200 Grand Prix victories on Friday in Hickstead. The 2012 USEF National Co-Champion, who tied with Kessler for the honor, has been riding Royce for just two years and has already amassed multiple top placings, both stateside and abroad. Most recently, the pair finished 11th in the prestigious Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen.

Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) will ride Abigail Wexner’s Cortes ‘C’.
Cortes ‘C’ is a 2002 Belgian Warmblood gelding.

Madden recently returned to competition after spending nearly two months out of the saddle due to a broken collarbone. The 2013 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping Finals winner and Cortes ‘C’ will look to display the form that helped them jump double-clear efforts last year in two European Furusiyya FEI Nations Cups and earned them victory in the Longines Global Champion Tour’s Grand Prix of Chantilly. Madden has jumped in multiple Nations Cups and championships with her Hickstead teammates, including in the Olympic Team Gold medal-winning efforts with Ward in 2004 and 2008, on the Silver medal-winning 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games team with Engle and Ward, and at the 2012 Olympic Games with Ward and Kessler.

Bloomberg (New York, N.Y.) will ride Gotham Enterprizes LLC’s Juvina.
Juvina is a 2001 Warmblood mare.

Bloomberg heads into Gijon’s Nation Cup on strong form after jumping multiple clear rounds a week ago at CSI5* Paris, including earning a fourth-place finish in the Longines Global Champions Tour of Paris Grand Prix with Juvina. Additionally, the pair was also a member of United States’ third-place effort in Falsterbo.

Judge (Wellington, Fla.) will ride Double H Farm’s HH Copin Van De Broy.
HH Copin Van De Broy is a 2002 Belgian Warmblood stallion.

Judge only began riding HH Copin Van De Broy this year, but has quickly found top results with the stallion, including a third-place finish in the ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Spruce Meadows. The pair is already off to a strong start in Gijon, winning the Funeraria class on Wednesday.

Bond-Clarke (Hidden Hills, Calif.) will ride Little Valley Farms’ Chela LS.
Chela LS is a 2004 La Silla mare.
