Wellington, FL – January 11, 2012 – It could be their charming smiles or the musical notes in their laughter, but one thing is for certain: children capture our hearts. There are 28 million children of alcoholics living among us, but there is only one organization that brings their smiles into full fruition: Horses Healing Hearts. Using equine experiential learning, Liz Olszewski has created a program that uses horses as positive mentors to help children learn from the gentle giants and understand life, themselves and how to cope with their parents’ addiction to substance abuse.

The non-profit organization, founded in September 2009 by Liz Olszewski of Wellington, FL, helps ease the pain of kids growing up in a home riddled with substance abuse. Horses Healing Hearts (HHH) provides these children with the opportunity to help heal emotionally by working with horses while having fun and learning positive life-coping skills, responsibility and confidence.

“They are the only organization in the nation at the time doing this,” President of Phelps Media Group International Mason Phelps said. “It is amazing how far they have grown, and we are hoping to take them even further.”

Equine-Assisted Therapy on the Rise

Every horse lover knows that time spent with a horse can be soothing to the soul. Forms of horse-assisted therapy have been in use for decades and even centuries — there are records of the physical and emotional benefits of horseback riding from the times of the ancient Greeks — but now there is more interest than ever in harnessing the benefits of equine-assisted therapy to help those with physical, mental, and emotional problems.

Types of Therapy

What is equine-assisted therapy, exactly? There are a few different terms and definitions associated with the phrase. In the 20th century equine-assisted therapy focused mostly on helping those with physical impairments or handicaps; the term “hippotherapy” refers to physical rehab on horseback, utilizing the horse as the therapist. However, equine-assisted therapy has expanded to include equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP), which utilizes the psychological benefits of human-horse interaction to achieve specific treatment goals. It also includes equine-assisted learning (EAL), which “emphasizes education and learning specific skills as defined by the individual or group,” according to the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EGALA) website.

Luke Olsen Earns Top Slot in Upcoming ASPCA Maclay Finals at Alltech National Horse Show

Luke Olsen piloted Sports Talk to the Regional 2 ASPCA Maclay Regionals 22nd place. Anne Gittins Photography

Buffalo, NY – September 26, 2012 – The ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Regionals are one of the most highly anticipated events of the Fall Circuit. After months of preparation and qualification, the top junior riders gather at the prominent Regionals for the chance to succeed and qualify for the notorious Finals. SBS Farms working student Luke R. Olsen is one of the few who has paved the way to his chance to battle the best at the Alltech National Horse Show in only one short month, riding to the 22nd position during the Region 1 ASPCA Maclay Regionals.

It has been a winding road to success for Olsen. His grandmother, Mary Walsh, was the only hunt seat rider to ever make the Good Hands Finals when it was open to both Saddle Seat and Hunt Seat riders in the 1940s. Her talent and passion for horses has been a source of roots in Olsen’s life, fostering the same love of the equestrian sport.

Bruce Ekstrom Donates Horse to The Marion County Therapeutic Riding Association

Ocala, FL (September 11, 2012)  – Bruce Ekstrom of Tuigpaarden Farms in Ocala, Florida and Hackney Hill Farm in Shelbyville, Kentucky is well known for his philanthropic contributions to the equine community, and he has demonstrated a special affinity for therapeutic riding programs particular.  Ekstrom recently donated Hemi, a sleek French Trotter, to the Marion County Therapeutic Riding Association when he recognized that the horse’s character and disposition would make him an excellent therapy horse.  Hemi, who was imported from France, has won over a half million dollars as a roadster and driving horse.

The French Trotter is the equivalent to the USTA’s Standardbred, and Ekstrom purchased Hemi to be his personal road horse as the gelding possessed exceptional speed, elegance and intelligence: all the qualities for an ideal competitive driving horse.  A previous owner changed the horse’s name to Hemi, which is a very powerful type of engine, to reflect his power and brilliance.  The decision to reschool Hemi and donate him to the Marion County Therapeutic Riding Association was based on the horse’s love of people and intuitive sense for recognizing confidence or insecurity in those around him.  “Hemi has an excellent disposition, but he is also able to read people’s energy,” said Ekstrom.  “Because of this I knew he would excel as a therapy horse and began to school him under saddle for this purpose.  He’s simply an exceptional horse, and when he has finished his job at the Therapeutic Riding center, he will come back to my farm for his retirement.”

The EQUUS Foundation Announces 2012 Grant Awards

WESTPORT, CT – August 31, 2012 -The Board of Directors of the EQUUS Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the award of over $290,000 in grants to charities dedicated to the well-being of horses and improving the quality of life of people through equine-assisted activities and therapies.

The EQUUS Foundation is dedicated to Helping Horses Heal People. The number of unwanted horses, estimated at 170,000 a year, has reached an epidemic level in the United States. Tragically, many are slaughtered. Instead, they can be rescued – and many can be re-trained and re-homed for useful lives as therapy horses.

Therapy programs using horses benefit the minds, bodies and spirits of people with special needs in ways that no other therapy can. Therapy programs using horses can improve balance, strengthen muscles, advance communication skills, and increase self-esteem and confidence.
