Lorcan Gallagher and Sangris Boy Secure $25k Marshall & Sterling Insurance Grand Prix Win

Mill Spring, NC – October 18, 2020 – Lorcan Gallagher (IRL) and Sangris Boy secured the win in the $25,000 Marshall & Sterling Insurance Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers in 36.574 seconds. Adrienne Sternlicht (USA) and the Starlight Farms 1 LLC mount Cadans Z, the 2009 Zangersheide mare (Carosso VDL x Navarone), barely missed first, taking second place with a time of 36.684. Hunter Holloway (USA) and Pepita Con Spita, the 2011 Westphalian Warmblood mare (Con Spirit 7 x Come On) owned by Hays Investment Corp., took third place honors with a final time of 37.793.

Sangris Boy’s long strides were a challenge in the first round, Gallagher said of the course designed by Guilherme Jorge (BRA), but came in handy in the jump-off. Out of 54 combinations, the duo delivered a strong win against nine jump-off competitors.

“My horse has a really big stride, so in the first round, a lot of the lines were quite short for me when they were normal for others. I was a little worried about the time allowed, but we turned tight and made it as efficient as we could. My horse jumped really well today so that made my life a lot easier! I knew there were a lot of fast people in the jump-off. The course had long gaps between each jump so I knew I could use the stride to my advantage. There were two rollbacks that I tried to be very tight and forward with,” explained Gallagher.

Augusta Iwasaki Claims Double Victory in $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby

October 16, 2020 – Augusta Iwasaki (USA) claimed double victory at Friday’s $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at TIEC, taking first place aboard Attendu de Lannois Z with a two-round score of 377.5, and earning second place on Rolo with 377 points. Michael Britt-Leon (USA) and Private I, the 2012 Oldenburg gelding (Corrado x Verdi) owned by Kelly Sims, completed the podium with a third-place total of 375.5.

Iwasaki’s relationship with both mounts is relatively new, so she was pleased with her performance on each one. After only a month of training together, Attendu de Lannois Z, the 2013 Warmblood gelding (Unknown x Unknown) owned by Ashland Farms, proved to be a winning partner.

“This is his second Derby, and last week was his first. Last week, we were tenth,” explained Iwasaki. “He was really great in both rounds, we just had to get the Handy a little bit smoother. His transitions are so great, so when I did a tight rollback to the trot jump, we ended up walking. [Today], I just had to make sure to keep my leg on and get everything evened out.”

Karl Cook and Caillou 24 Master $137,000 MD Barnmaster Grand Prix CSI 3*

Mill Spring, NC – October 17, 2020 – In a star-studded class of international athletes from eight countries, Karl Cook (USA) and Caillou 24 mastered the $137,000 MD Barnmaster Grand Prix CSI 3* with a lightning fast jump-off time of 36.75 seconds. Landing in second place nearly a second later was Kent Farrington (USA) and Kaprice, whom Farrington owns with Haity McNerney, with a time of 37.52 seconds. Darragh Kenny (IRL) and Carthano, owned by Darragh Kenny with Whiterock Farm, Ltd., followed in third with a final score of 38.87.

The Ghuiherme Jorge (BRA)-designed course challenged 50 pairs, with only nine advancing to the jump-off round. Cook and Caillou 24, owned by Signe Ostby, pressed hard to claim the win thanks to Cook’s instinctual move to leave out a stride on the final gallop.

“It was just land and go. I saw it and realized if I wanted to win, I had to try it. Until he [Caillou 24] took off I didn’t think we were going to make it!” shared Cook.

McLain Ward and Contagious Are Uncatchable in $37k Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3*

Mill Spring, NC – October 15, 2020 – McLain Ward (USA) and Contagious were uncatchable in the $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort (TIEC), stopping the short-course timers in 40.4 seconds for the win. Amanda Derbyshire (GBR) grabbed two top-five placings aboard Gochman Sport Horse LLC entries, piloting Cornwall BH, the 2008 Holsteiner stallion (Con Air x Cambridge), to second on a time of 49.83 seconds, while also claiming fourth aboard Luibanta BH, the 2008 Irish Sport Horse mare (Luidam x Abantos), in a time of 41.56 seconds on four faults. Darragh Kenny (IRL) rounded out the podium in the irons with the 2007 Holsteiner gelding (Cartani x Heraldik II) owned in partnership with Whiterock Farm Ltd., Carthano, putting in the fastest four-fault round in a time of 41.43 seconds.

The Ghuiherme Jorge (BRA) course design saw 100 entries challenge the first round, with only six pairs earning the chance to tour the jump-off track. Ward and the 2009 German Sport Horse gelding (Contagio x For Keeps) owned by Beechwood Stables LLC managed to make the best of a tough situation with a field stacked with stiff competition, he shared:

“It’s a tough situation. It’s a three-star event, but because of the state of the world and our sport right now, you have 100 [competing] today,” he analyzed. “To me, that was like a five-star 1.55m track. I’m lucky to have a horse like Contagious who’s up to that, but you also saw a lot of horses today who were surprised by it.”

Jordan Coyle and Picador Conquer $37,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*

October 14, 2020 – Jordan Coyle (IRL) and Picador’s performance could not be topped in the $37,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*, halting the speed phase timers at 25.146 seconds. Eugenio Garza (MEX) and Caracas, the 2009 Holsteiner gelding (Cachas x Unknown) owned by Nerijus Sipaila, earned second on a speed phase time of 25.43 seconds, while Kristen VanderVeen (USA) claimed the yellow rosette aboard Bull Run’s Almighty, the 2008 Hanoverian gelding (Caspar x Quidam De Revel) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Six LLC, on a time of 26.079 seconds.

Coyle and the 2007 British Warmblood gelding (Lupicor x Concorde) owned by Elan Farm toured the Ghuiherme Jorge (BRA) course design without seeing many riders go, he admitted, but having a naturally quick horse made all the difference. “I rode one horse before Picador in the class, so I kind of knew the distances. I didn’t get to see Eugenio go, but I saw Kristen’s ride and she was fast. Luckily, I have one of the fastest horses there is! The course was nice, but honestly, it’s the horse,” Coyle emphasized about where he gained the advantage in a class of 42 starters.

McLain Ward and Elke Maria M Win $1,000 Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*

October 14, 2020 – McLain Ward (USA) and Elke Maria M, the 2009 Dutch Warmblood mare (Cornet Obelensky x Carthago) belonging to Willem Greve Sportpaarden BV, stopped the timers in 23.02 seconds to earn top honors in the $1,000 Power & Speed Stake CSI 3* Wednesday at TIEC. Hunter Holloway (USA) and Pepita Con Spita, the Hays Investment Corp. entry and 2011 Westphalian mare (Con Spirit 7 x Come On), completed the speed phase in 23.585 seconds for reserve honors in the class of 50 entries, while Teddy Vlock (ISR) cleared the speed phase in 24.253 seconds to earn third with Charly Brown, the Vlock Show Stables-owned 2005 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Diamant de Semilly x Burggraaf).

Mill Spring, NC – October 12, 2020 – Mimi Gochman (Wellington, FL) and Gigi’s Girl BH sliced their way to a win in the $25,000 ProElite Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers in 29.27 seconds. Gavin Harley (Wellington, FL) and Corbawido PS, the Wolfstone Stables & Sales Inc.-owned 2012 Oldenburg gelding (Cornet’s Balou x Annette), charged to second on a time of 29.352 seconds, while Katherine Dash (Washington, WA) completed the podium in the irons with HH Casey Jones, the 2009 Hanoverian gelding (Clinton I x Chicca) owned by Play the Game LLC, clearing the short course in 31.877 seconds.

Thirty-nine pairs tested the Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) first round, with only six riders returning for the jump-off challenge. Gochman was able to take several fences at a severe angle, slicing her way through a tightly-built course with the 2008 Dutch Warmblood mare (Vingino x Zaline) owned by Gochman Sport Horse LLC.

“I wanted to go for it.” she said of her jump-off performance. “There were six of us and it was my last class of the week. She felt great! My first round was smooth enough that I felt confident. I just wanted to go for it and try my best.” Gochman emphasized, “The footing is amazing! It’s been raining all weekend and it’s still perfect.”

Liza Boyd and Ferrari Cruise to $20,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Win

October 9, 2020 – Liza Boyd (Camden, SC) and Ferrari claimed the win in Friday’s $20,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at Tryon International Hunter Derby, adding a handy round score of 202 to a 181 first-round result in order to receive 383 points total. With 379 points to earn second, Victoria Colvin (Loxahatchee, FL) guided William Lyles’ Avatar Z, the 2012 Zangersheide stallion (Arko III x Chang Lee van Berken Broeck), to a handy round score of 204, while Danielle Torano (Wellington, FL) achieved the podium with Faldo II, Jimmy Torano’s 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Baltic VDL x Rienaldine), after producing a total score of 378.5 over the Lewis Pack (USA) course design.

From placing in Grand Prix competition at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) to scoring big in the Grand Hunter Ring at TIEC, Boyd revealed that the 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Thunder van de Zuutehoeve x Sipora) is actually very new to the Hunters, and was purchased for a client sight-unseen as a Junior Hunter prospect.

“Ferrari is amazing. He just became a Hunter right after COVID-19 hit. At the end of WEF, he got a ribbon in a Grand Prix with Ilan Bluman. After that, Michael Morrissey and his wife, Lourdes, bought him and turned him into a Hunter.” After a few national derbies under his belt, “my brother, Hardin Towell, saw him and tried him. We actually bought him for our client sight-unseen. It was a little scary! He actually just came up to me and said, ‘Finally, you listen to me!’ He’s the one who told us to buy him. It’s fun because it’s a family affair. Even though my brother is a Jumper, he loves the Hunters and sells a lot of top Hunters.”

Brian Moggre and Nikita Jolie Jump to Win $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 3*

October 9, 2020 – Brian Moggre (USA) and Nikita Jolie swept through the timers in a time of 61.52 seconds to claim the $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 3* on Friday, dominating a class of 31 entries. In second place, Alberto Michan (ISR) and Loribri, the Antonette Leviste/Yngen Properties, Inc. entry and 2009 Norwegian Warmblood mare (Kingsland SM x Primas), cleared the course in 64.13 seconds, while Gonzalo Guevara (COL) piloted Valentine Car to third on a time of 65.41 seconds with the 2009 Warmblood gelding (Son of Juan Car x Galiani CH) for Fernando Cardenas.

Moggre’s success with the 2010 Oldenburg mare (Numero Uno x Ladalco) owned by Ashland Farms came after a top-ten placing in Wednesday’s $37,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*, and Moggre also collected a fifth place finish in Thursday’s $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* with MTM Vivre le Reve before topping Friday’s marquis international competition.

Mill Spring, NC – October 10, 2020 – Beat Mändli (SUI) and Vic des Cerisiers sliced their way to a win in the $137,000 Coca-Cola® Grand Prix CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers at 33.02 seconds. Just behind, Mario Deslauriers (CAN) piloted Amsterdam 27, a 2010 Holsteiner gelding (Catoki x Acord II) owned by himself, Luja LLC, and Wishing Well Farm LLC, to second place on a time of 33.64 through the short course, while Bliss Heers (USA) rounded out the podium with Antidote de Mars, the Bridgeside Farms LLC-owned 2010 Selle Francais stallion (Diamant de Semilly x Jarnac), speeding to a 33.72 second performance.

The marquis class of Tryon Fall 4 competition saw 49 entries challenge the Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) course design, with 20 pairs earning the opportunity to challenge the jump-off track. Though six entries followed behind Mändli and the 2009 Cheval de Selle gelding (D’anguerny x Niagara de May) owned by Grand Road Partners GMBH, nothing could top the neat and quick performance he was able to produce.

“It was a nice course, and straight-forward. There were lots of clear rounds, but when we walked it, it seemed tough enough! Of course, I’m very happy,” Mändli emphasized. “The horse makes my job very easy when he jumps like this!”

Sydney Shulman and Villamoura Victorious in $37k Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3*

Mil Spring, NC – October 8, 2020 – Sydney Shulman (ISR) and Villamoura left out a few strides to top Tryon International Equestrian Center’s largest class held to date at the venue, winning the $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* on a time of 32.3 seconds. Kristen VanderVeen (USA) and Bull Run’s Risen, the 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Utopie x Indoctro) owned by Bull Run Jumpers, Inc., earned second place on a time of 33.64 seconds, while Alberto Michan (ISR) rounded out the podium aboard Cosa Nostra, the 2010 Oldenburg mare (Conthargos x Quintender) owned by Alberto Michan and Daniel Michan Halbinger, in a time of 34.06 seconds over the jump-off course.

The Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) course design tested a record 106 horse-and-rider pairs, with 27 pairs qualifying for the jump-off and 16 pairs ultimately challenging the short course. Previously, the largest class hosted at TIEC to date featured 102 entries. Not only did Shulman guide the 2009 Selle Francais mare (Diamant de Semilly x Unknown) owned by Jill Shulman to a win, but she also qualified J. Boston S.E., the 2009 Belgian Warmblood (Boris van het Kluisebos x Guido) owned by Jill and Sydney Shulman, and was the only rider to return for the second round with two mounts.

Amanda Derbyshire and Oasis Spirit Dominate $37,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*

October 7, 2020 – Amanda Derbyshire (GBR) and Oasis Spirit dominated Wednesday’s $37,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*, stopping the speed phase timers in 26.25 seconds. Just behind, David O’Brien (IRL) and Maldonado SCF, the 2012 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Diktator van de Boslandhoeve x Landino) owned by Spy Coast Farm LLC, cleared the speed phase in 26.538 seconds for second, while Karen Polle (JPN) and Jet Run, her own 2010 Oldenburg gelding (Chacco-Blue x Robin Z), collected third on a time of 26.928 seconds.

Derbyshire and her own 2010 Irish Sport Horse mare (Cobra x Lux Z) were one of 50 trips to challenge the power phase of the Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) course, with 32 horse-and-rider pairs proceeding to the speed portion.

Daniel Geitner and Fazous Fly to $1,000 Power & Speed Stake CSI 3* Win

October 7, 2020 – Daniel Geitner (USA) and Fazous, the 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Up To Date x Purioso) owned by Oak Ledge Farm, sped to a win in Wednesday’s $1,000 Power & Speed Stake CSI 3*, stopping the speed phase timers in 33.138 seconds. Holly Shepherd (USA) guided CHS Krooze to second on a time of 33.467 seconds with the 2010 Irish Sport Horse mare (Kroongraaf x Cruising) owned by Loretta Patterson, while Mavis Spencer (USA) and Con Calle, the 2009 Holsteiner gelding (Contendro II x Cassini II) owned by Georgy Sarah Maskrey-Segesman, rounded out the podium on a speed phase time of 34.064 seconds.

Mill Spring, NC – October 4, 2020 – Kristen VanderVeen (Wellington, FL) and Bull Run’s Divine Fortune ended Tryon Fall 3 on a high note, stopping the jump-off timers in 38.099 seconds to take the win in Sunday’s $25,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Riding Chuck Berry 8, the 2007 Hanoverian gelding (Chacco Blue x Winzerin B) owned by Atlas Equine Holdings, LLC, Abigail McArdle (Wellington, FL) grabbed second on a time of 40.764 seconds, while Wilhelm Genn (Lebanon, OH) and Bugatti, the 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Heartbreaker x Nona Bella) owned by Eduardo Leon, earned third-place honors after their 41.546-second jump-off performance.

The Catsy Cruz (MEX) course saw 35 entries test the first round, with five returning to test the jump-off track. “The time was a little bit tighter than it’s been all week, which helped get the numbers a little bit smaller in the jump-off. She’s naturally my speed horse, with her natural fast canter, and the time allowed actually suited us quite nicely,” VanderVeen shared. “So, that was great, and then the jump-off was just fun. I just went as fast as I could, and she’s such a fighter in the jump-offs – it’s really her specialty.”

David Matisz and M. Holliday Cruise to $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 2* Win

October 2, 2020 – David Matisz (HUN) and M. Holliday came out on top in Friday’s $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 2*, stopping the timers in 70.44 seconds to take the win. In second, Kama Godek (USA) and Stonehenge 5, her own 2011 Hanoverian stallion (Stolzenberg x Kolibri), cleared the course in 70.58 seconds, while third place went to Bliss Heers (USA) and Christos, the 2009 Holsteiner stallion (Christo 5 x Linaro) owned by Bridgeside Farms LLC, after their 74.92 second performance.

The Catsy Cruz (MEX) course design saw 13 pairs in the field, and Matisz chose to compete with the David Matisz LLC owned 2012 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Zilverstar T x Gelha’s VDL Emilion) Friday instead of taking on Saturday’s $73,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix CSI 2*, he explained. “I thought it was a well-built, nice course. It flowed really nicely. I had a young horse, and just wanted him to have a good experience. I thought he jumped it well, and it was a good experience for both of us. This is his first international horse show, so we didn’t really know what to expect from him this week.”

Jimmy Torano and Laskano Conquer $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby

October 2, 2020 – Jimmy Torano (Wellington, FL) and Laskano galloped to a win in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby during Tryon Fall 3, scoring a two-round total of 184 points for the win. Liza Boyd (Camden, SC) and Walk-Off, a 2014 Holsteiner gelding owned by Gigi Manigault, scored 91 and 92 for a two-round total of 183 and second place, while third place honors went to Maria Rasmussen (Royal Palm Beach, FL) and Business Time, scoring 174 with Maya Grove’s 2012 Swedish Warmblood gelding (Heartbeat x Little Sunshine).

Torano and the Isalou, Inc. entry, the 2012 Westphalian gelding (Los Angeles x Laskaja), walked up the lines to show off a powerful stride throughout the Dean Rheinheimer (Sheridan, IN) course, he detailed. “There were unrelated distances which were nice for my horse because I was able to gallop along and show him off. There was one line that everybody was riding in eleven or twelve strides, and my horse has a big stride, so I galloped it in ten strides in both rounds,” he recapped. “I think that probably helped with my score.”

Hat Trick for Adam Prudent & Baloutinue with $73,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix CSI 2* Win

Mill Spring, NC – October 3, 2020 – With electrifying speed, Adam Prudent and Baloutinue claimed their third consecutive FEI win this week, leaving the competition in their dust with jump-off time of 38.67 seconds in the $73,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix CSI 2* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). With a time of 39.76 seconds, Beat Mandli (SUI) and Vic Des Cerisiers, a 2009 Cheval de Selle gelding (D’anguerny x Niagara de May) owned by Grand Road Partners GMBH, landed closely behind in second place, while Abigail McArdle (USA) and Victorio 5, the 2006 Hanoverian stallion (Uccello x Graefin) owned by Victorio Equine Group LLC, claimed third place on a fault-free time of 39.89 seconds.

With back-to-back FEI wins under his belt in Tryon Fall 3 – the $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake and the $10,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed – Prudent proved his horse’s prowess for speed after bringing the Plain Bay Farm 2010 Hanoverian gelding (Balou Du Rouet x Utika) down to the CSI 2* level to focus on the skill in particular. TIEC’s special guest live stream commentator Frank Madden praised Prudent’s impressive performance, saying, “He deserved to win; he did everything correctly.”

Mill Spring, NC – October 2, 2020 – The start of FEI Jumping competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center at Tryon Resort (TIEC) resulted in back-to-back wins for Adam Prudent (USA) and Baloutinue, claiming both Wednesday’s $10,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 2* and Thursday’s $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 2*. Besting a field of 73 entries around the Catsy Cruz (MEX) course, Prudent and Baloutinue stopped the jump-off timers at 33.62 seconds to earn the Welcome Stake win. In second, Fernando Cardenas Jr. (COL) piloted Quincy Too, the 2009 Zangersheide gelding (Unknown x Unknown) owned by Fernando Cardenas, to a time of 34.39 seconds, while Beezie Madden (USA) sped to third aboard Breitling LS, the Abigail Wexner-owned 2006 Dutch Warmblood stallion (Quintero x Acord II), clearing the short course in 34.41 seconds.

Prudent and the 2010 Hanoverian gelding (Balou Du Rouet x Landor S) owned by Plain Bay Farm were one of 21 horse-and-rider pairs to challenge the jump-off track, and he relayed that focusing on speed has been paying off this week: “He’s a work in progress, but an amazing horse. He’s top quality. With this week being a little smaller [at the two-star level], the plan was to really teach him to go fast. We’ve never really gone fast,” Prudent elaborated. “We have the first round nearly to a tee. He goes clear most of the time, but in the speed round, he can be a little all over the place. We worked on going fast with the smaller fences this week, and it’s paid off!”

Prudent and Baloutinue Excel in $10,000 EquiSafe Global Power & Speed Stake CSI 2*

September 30, 2020 – Adam Prudent (USA) and Baloutinue sped through the speed phase of Wednesday’s $10,000 EquiSafe Global Power and Speed Stake CSI 2* in 30.979 seconds to tope a field of 59 entries. In second, Luis Larrazabal (VEN) and Luminaria LS La Silla, the 2011 Mexican Sport Horse mare (Unknown x Unknown) owned by San Francisco Stables, LLC, put in a 32.798 second round, while Doug Payne (USA) and Quintessence, Jane Dudinsky’s 2011 Holsteiner gelding (Unknown x Unknown), stopped the clock at 35.286 seconds to take home third.

Prudent and the 2010 Hanoverian gelding (Balou Du Rouet x Landor S) owned by Plain Bay Farm avoided collecting time faults in the first round where many were caught out, he relayed, and put in a tight time that couldn’t be caught in the speed phase. “It was a nice course. The power phase was a bit tight on time, with a lot of time faults there, but my horse managed that very well, and the second part was quite speedy! We got it done.”

Matt Cyphert and Lochinvar Top $30,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix

Mill Spring, NC – September 28, 2020 – Matt Cyphert (Northlake, TX) and his own Lochinvar cleared the jump-off in 38.974 seconds to take home the win in Saturday’s $30,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). In second, John Angus (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and W. Tonix Hero, the 2003 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Ogano Sitte x Major de la Cour) owned by Stephanie Angus, stopped the timers in 38.998 seconds, while Bryn Sadler (Santa Fe, NM) and Cinven CR, the 2007 Holsteiner gelding (Clearway x Coronado) owned by Showcase 81 LLC, collected third place on a time of 41.178 seconds.

The Peter Grant (CAN) course design saw 34 pairs challenge the first round of competition, with 12 entries returning for the jump-off track. Cyphert and the 2004 gelding (Karamiro x L’espirit) were able to capture a tight time set by Angus by putting in a smooth round, he reported:

“He’s a superstar horse! He’s the best horse I’ve ever ridden, and I’m old enough to know that by now. I’m fortunate with him as he’s really naturally fast. He’s quick across the ground and has a big step. He’s also really good at reading the jumps,” Cyphert added. “He doesn’t spend a lot of time in the air. I felt like if I followed the right track, there were enough places where I could run across the ring and use the speed to my benefit. I tell my clients all of the time that smooth is fast.”

Wilhelm Genn and Van Gogh Victorious in $15,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake

September 24, 2020 – Thursday’s $15,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake saw Wilhelm Genn (Lebanon, OH) pilot Van Gogh to victory in Tryon Stadium, stopping the jump-off timers at 44.409 seconds. Brittni Raflowitz (Palm City, FL) and Hilton van de Breepoel, the 2007 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Contact Van de Heffinck x Opium) owned by ESI Show Jumpers, Maarten Huygens & Darragh Kerins, claimed second on a time of 44.898 seconds, while third place went to Ramiro Quintana (Wellington, FL) and GQ, the 2011 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Contago x Cinderella) owned by Miriam McClure Adam, after their 45.634-second performance.

One of 27 entries in the first round and one of ten pairs to qualify for the short course over the Peter Grant (CAN) track, Genn explained that he was aiming for an efficient double-clear, but not necessarily the win with the 2008 Oldenburg gelding (Valentino x Caretano Z) owned in partnership with Patty Genn:

“He’s not a quick horse. He jumps a lot of clean rounds, but he’s not quick. So, for me, I like to start the course as fast as I finish. My goal for today, because I didn’t want to ruin my rideability for Saturday, was to have a nice double-clean, and to be efficient,” Genn detailed. “I wanted to get a good check hopefully if I stayed double-clear, but the goal is to win on Saturday. Winning today was a nice bonus! In the first round, I realized that in the jump-off I could do one less stride from 6A-B to 7. He’s a good turner, so it just came up nicely.”
