Gladstone, NJ – January 6, 2016 – The United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation is pleased to announce that it has awarded the 2016 Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant to eventing rider Jenny Caras of Cartersville, Georgia.

The Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant is awarded through the USET Foundation Amanda Pirie Warrington Fund. In 2015, 19-year-old Caras, with her talented mount Fernhill Fortitude, took the eventing world by storm as one of youngest riders in the country successfully competing at the CCI*** and CIC*** level.

The Amanda Pirie Warrington Fund was established by Pirie’s family in her memory with the purpose of helping to provide financial assistance to an eventing rider who has been identified as a rider with great talent and ability to represent the United States in the future. On January 15, 2015, Robert S. Pirie, Amanda’s father, passed away. It was Mr. Pirie that made the Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant possible. Amanda meant the world to Mr. Pirie, and this was his way of keeping her memory and spirit alive in the eventing community. They will always be remembered through this grant.

The recipient of the grant is a person that will benefit from the opportunity of continuing their training with top coaches and competing against the world’s best horse and rider combinations in Eventing, one of three Olympic equestrian disciplines.

“It’s a huge honor. I was not expecting it at all,” expressed Caras. “It’s really exciting, and an honor that people recognize the horses that I have and they want to give me a shot.”

As the recipient of the grant, Caras will receive up to $5,000 to help offset expenses associated with her training over the next year. Her main target will be to travel with “Forty,” an 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, to the Bramham Horse Trials in England over the summer.

“That’s my big goal for the summer,” explained Caras. “I’d really like to use this grant to open up opportunities for me to get more training that I wouldn’t have necessarily gotten without it, especially in the show jumping because that’s my weakness. I’d like to use the money to go to jumper shows and get jumper lessons to supplement everything else that I’m doing.”

After earning the Team Gold and Individual Bronze medals in 2013 at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, Caras and Forty began consistently competing at the CIC*** and CCI*** level in 2015. Competing against riders with much more experience, they placed sixth at Jersey Fresh and fourth at Bromont. She also won the Markham Trophy as the highest placed young rider in the United States that had not competed at the CCI4* level during Fair Hill International.

“I started working for Phillip Dutton last December, and we moved Forty up to advanced. He handled it like a pro,” Caras said. “Cross-country goes easily for him. He jumps it if at all possible, sometimes probably when it’s not! I had a really, really good year, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Phillip Dutton and David O’Connor. Leslie Law, the under 25 coach, helped me tremendously with Forty on the flat. I’m really excited for this year and hopefully we can keep things going in the right direction.”

Beyond continuing her education with Forty, Caras hopes to be a part of the U.S. team internationally during her career. “That’s what I’ve wanted to do since before I even knew really what the sport was about,” she laughed. “I knew that I wanted to go to the Olympic Games for Eventing. It’s just something that I’ve always been working toward, and hopefully someday it will happen. It’s opportunities like this that will make it more possible for me. I’m really honored to have received this grant, and I’m really honored that people believe in me.”

Thanks to the Amanda Pirie Warrington Grant, Caras can focus on Forty’s training and preparing him for the right competitions to further his career as Caras aims toward one day representing the United States on the international stage.

USET Foundation’s “Dressage Challenge” Deadline Draws Near – Pledge Your Gift Today!

Kimberly Herslow, Steffen Peters, Sabine Schut-Kery and Laura Graves at the 2015 Pan American Games.

Gladstone, NJ – November 10, 2015 – The Dressage Challenge, created by Fritz and Claudine Kundrun and the United States Equestrian Team Foundation, has reached 61 percent of its goal of raising $1,500,000 for the High Performance Dressage program. Concluding on December 31, 2015, the Dressage Challenge, which offers a one-for-two match to donations, will provide vital support to athletes preparing to represent the United States on the international stage at competitions such at the 2016 Olympic Games and 2018 World Equestrian Games.

Launched at the end of March by the Kundruns, longtime horse owners and supporters of U.S. dressage, the Dressage Challenge will match $1 for every $2 in gift commitments made by December 31, 2015, up to a total of $500,000. With more than $920,000 already donated, this landmark fundraising effort is well on its way to reaching its goal of $1,500,000, but the match will end in just over a month. By making your commitment today, you will help developing and elite athletes in the United States achieve their dreams.

Raising $1,500,000, will allow the U.S. High Performance Dressage to continue to build upon its recent successes and create a world-class program that will put the U.S. on top of the podium at international championships. Gifts are all tax-deductible. Commitments of $25,000 or more made by December 31 are eligible for the Challenge and may be paid over a multi-year period.

“Building a world class program that will put the United States dressage team on the podium will take the commitment and support of many people in our wonderful dressage community,” said Robert Dover, Chef d’Equipe of the U.S. Dressage Team. “The Dressage Challenge with its matching funds presents a unique and important opportunity for our dressage programs. I want to extend my sincere thanks to all those that have already made commitments to the Dressage Challenge and hope that many more will consider joining them in the coming month and help us achieve excellence.”

Just a few weeks remain, and the Dressage Challenge offers a special opportunity for donors to see their contribution go the extra mile. This Challenge will require extraordinary commitment and the support of those in the equestrian community who love the sport and desire to see our athletes, both equine and human, compete and win at the highest levels of international competition.

USET Foundation Launches U.S. Equestrian Team Registry

Gladstone, NJ – September 15, 2015 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of its new U.S. Equestrian Team Registry. With the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro now less than a year away, our United States Equestrian Team athletes need assistance to prepare for the Games. To help them get ready to demonstrate the excellence of American horsemanship for the entire world to see, you can lend a hand by gifting a Registry item today.

The United States is one of the only countries in the world that does not receive federal funding. Instead, athletes rely on the support of fans and donors nationwide to finance their Olympic and Paralympic dreams. That’s why the USET Foundation launched a brand-new campaign aimed at helping U.S. equestrian athletes.

The campaign, called the U.S. Equestrian Team Registry, invites donors to select a symbolic gift that represents a real athlete need – anything from a riding helmet to horse transportation or a sports psychology session. When a donor selects a symbolic gift, the cost of that item or service is used to support our U.S. Equestrian Teams on their quest for gold. With this campaign, the USEF and USET Foundation can help ensure that the U.S. sends the best possible group of athletes to the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio – not just those who can afford to get there.

“The USET Foundation is always looking for innovative ways to get people involved and feel like part of the team,” said two-time Olympic Gold medalist McLain Ward. “I think from that point of view it’s very exciting. Support is the key to future success. Without people behind you at every level, we’re not going to continue to win on the world stage, and this registry is a vital part of that support.”

By participating in the U.S. Equestrian Team Registry campaign, fans are invited to become a part of “the team behind the Team” – a generous group of donors and sponsors who are invested in the success of the United States Equestrian Teams.

Join the team today by visiting http://www.uset.org/registry to check out the large inventory of items that are needed to help athletes succeed in all eight of the FEI disciplines. All of these items can help athletes bring home a priceless Gold medal for the United States.

The first 25 donors to the U.S. Equestrian Team Registry will receive two tickets to the Rolex Central Park Horse Show for Friday, September 25 or Saturday, September 26, 2015.

By joining the cause of the USET Foundation and giving the gift of a Registry item, you will be supporting all of the effort that it takes to compete at major events such as Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Equestrian Games and other championship events.

“It truly takes a ‘team’ to ensure our athletes and United States Equestrian Teams have the resources they need to achieve competitive excellence at Olympic Games and World Championships. We are really excited to present the U.S Equestrian Team Registry, a new way for people to show their support and join the ‘team.’ With less than a year to go to Rio, we hope everyone will make a gift and be recognized as a member of the team behind the Team,” said Bonnie Jenkins, USET Foundation Executive Director.

USET Foundation Mourns the Loss of Eventing Legend Karen Stives

Karen Stives won Team Gold and Individual Silver at the 1984 Olympic Games.

Gladstone, NJ – August 17, 2015 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is sad to report the passing of Karen Stives on August 14, 2015. Karen passed away peacefully at her home in Dover, Massachusetts after a long illness.

Karen has been heavily involved with the USET Foundation for two decades, serving as a Trustee from 1989-2002 and a member of the National Advisory Committee from 2003 – present. In 2014, Karen established the Karen E. Stives Endowment Fund for High Performance Eventing with a $1 million gift that provides an annual grant for an Eventing High Performance activity which will have a direct impact on the United States’ ability to win medals at International Championship competitions.

On the day of Karen’s passing, Phillip Dutton and Lauren Keiffer, the riders receiving the 2015 Karen E. Stives grants, led the U.S. Eventing Team at CCIO Aachen to a bronze medal. Karen’s intention for her grants to help this country win medals shined brightly on that day.

Karen’s dedication and commitment to the United States Equestrian Teams will live on through her generosity; however, she will best be remembered as one of this country’s most decorated equestrian athletes. Karen was the USCTA Rider of the Year in 1981, 1987 and 1988. In 1982, she represented the United States at the Luhmuhlen World Championship and in 1984 she anchored the U.S. Eventing Team that won the Team Gold at the Los Angeles Olympics, while also winning Individual Silver. Karen earned the Leading Lady Rider title in 1981, the Mercedes-Benz Horsewoman of the Year in 1984, and the prestigious Wofford Cup. Following her retirement from international competition, Karen became an FEI judge and was the Chairman of the USET Three-Day Event Selectors’ Committee for many years.

“Karen was the epitome of a competitor, philanthropist, businesswoman and friend. She achieved Gold Medal status both on and off the field of play and has left a legacy through the Karen E. Stives Endowment Fund, which will give other riders the chance to achieve their dream of riding for the United States and standing on the podium. She will be dearly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” said Bonnie Jenkins, USET Foundation Executive Director.

Karen is survived by her partner Bob Hutchison, her sister Linda McCabe and three nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held on a date to be announced. Contributions to the USET Foundation for the Karen E. Stives Endowment Fund for Eventing will further Karen’s goal of supporting this country’s athletes and high performance programs.

Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage Reaches $800,000 Goal

Gladstone, NJ – August 12, 2015 – In the spring of 2014, Margaret H. Duprey and The Barnfield Foundation launched The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage to help raise $800,000 for the discipline. Through the challenge, Duprey and The Barnfield Foundation each pledged up to $200,000, matching dollar for dollar, gift commitments of $4,000 and above. This month the goal was reached, providing the Para Dressage High Performance program with critical funding.

“I am very excited that we have reached the goal,” expressed Duprey. “It is a wonderful boost for the Para Dressage discipline and will hopefully provide more awareness for the sport in the United States. The USET Foundation did a great job spreading the word about the need for funding through the campaign and social media, which will help the riders prepare for Rio and representing the USA.”

The purpose of the Challenge was to establish a base of funding for each of the next four years, which will provide for a High Performance program that will include training sessions, coaching and international competition opportunities leading up to and including the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The financial need for Para Dressage athletes at the High Performance international level can be quite significant. Unlike in most countries, the United States Equestrian Teams do not receive any government subsidies. The main source of funds for athletes to participate in international competition comes through the USET Foundation from individuals and foundations whose interest in and commitment to equestrian sport motivates them to make generous charitable contributions.

In addition to shipping horses to Europe and making sure that the correct support staff is in place, such as veterinarians and farriers, additional support staff is also needed for the riders so they are able to function at the highest level, both physically and emotionally, during competitions.

While traveling, especially overseas, wheelchair accessibility can be limited, and a rider benefits from having a personal care assistant to help them to not only move through low accessibility areas but also to monitor their physical well-being. Other supplementary support staff may include a person who is physically capable of helping a rider to mount their horse before competition and a physical therapist to work the rider’s muscles.

USET Foundation Executive Director Bonnie B. Jenkins stated, “The Para Dressage High Performance program is growing each year, as are the number of riders who aspire to represent the United States at World Championships and the Paralympic Games. We are most grateful and appreciative to Margaret (Duprey) and The Barnfield Foundation for leading this effort, and to all the donors who made gift commitments allowing us to reach the goal.”

The funds raised by The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage will give riders the opportunity to achieve competitive excellence in international competition and help them to bring home medals in 2016!

Following her retirement from international competition, Stives became an FEI judge and was the Chairman of the USET Three-Day Event Selectors’ Committee for many years.

With the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil just over a year away, the Karen Stives Endowment Fund grants will no doubt help in the quest to bring home top honors for the United States.
