2015 Karen Stives Endowment Fund for High Performance Eventing Grant Recipients

Gladstone, NJ – July 7, 2015 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that through the Karen E. Stives Endowment Fund for High Performance Eventing Competition the following athlete-and-horse combinations have been awarded grants for the Aachen CICO3*, which will take place August 12-14 in Aachen, Germany:

  • Phillip Dutton (West Grove, Pa.) and Thomas Tierney and Simon Roosevelt’s Fernhill Cubalawn, a 2003 Holsteiner gelding
  • Lauren Kieffer (Ocala, Fla.) and Team Rebecca, LLC’s Veronica, a 2002 Dutch Warmblood mare

As part of the grant, Kieffer will also participate in the Blenheim CCI3*, taking place September 17-20 in Woodstock, Great Britain.

In 2014, Karen Stives made an incredible gift of $1 million to establish the Karen Stives Endowment Fund for High Performance Eventing. This fund allows for grants to be awarded annually for an Eventing High Performance activity, which has a direct impact on the United States’ ability to win medals at International Championship CCI competitions.

Stives was a championship Eventing rider who was named the USCTA Rider of Year in 1981, 1987 and 1988. In 1982, she represented the United States at the Luhmuhlen World Championships, and in 1984 she anchored the U.S. Eventing Team that won the Team Gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics, while also winning Individual Silver. Stives also earned the Leading Lady Rider title in 1981, the Mercedes-Benz Horsewoman of the Year in 1984, and the prestigious Wofford Cup. Following her retirement from international competition, Stives became an FEI judge and was the Chairman of the USET Three-Day Event Selectors’ Committee for many years.

With the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil just over a year away, the Karen Stives Endowment Fund grants will no doubt help in the quest to bring home top honors for the United States.
