Orangeville, Ontario – Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, claimed his second grand prix victory in a row at the inaugural Orangeville Show Jumping Tournaments held August 15-19 at the Orangeville Agricultural Society (OAS) Event Centre in Orangeville, ON.

Candele claimed victory in the $50,000 Grand Prix, presented by NationWide Auto Warranty, on Sunday, August 19, riding Carlotta Singular la Magnifica.  Two days earlier, he had won the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix aboard Game Ready, a 12-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Susan Grange, while Carlotta Singular la Magnifica placed second.

As the traveling alternates for the Canadian Olympic Show Jumping Team at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Candele and Carlotta Singular la Magnifica were making their first competitive appearance since arriving back on Canadian soil.  The long trip home didn’t hamper their performance.  The pair jumped to the top of the starting field of 22 horses to take the win in the $50,000 Grand Prix, presented by NationWide Auto Warranty.

Orangeville, Ontario – Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, captured the top two spots in the $25,000 Hayes Co. Grand Prix on Friday, August 17 at the inaugural Orangeville Show Jumping Tournaments running August 15-19 at the Orangeville Agricultural Society (OAS) Event Centre in Orangeville, ON.

Fresh off his return from the 2012 London Olympics, where he was the traveling alternate for the Canadian Olympic Team for Show Jumping, Candele was one of only three riders to post a clear round over the track set by two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, who also arrived direct from London.  Candele advanced to the jump-off with two mounts, Game Ready and Carlotta Singular la Magnifica, both owned by Susan Grange.

First to return to the ring was 2008 Olympic team silver medalist Mac Cone of King, ON, riding Amor Van de Rostal, a 12-year-old bay Belgium Warmblood gelding owned by Chadburn Holdings Inc.  The pair laid down a clear round, stopping the clock in 46.08 seconds and putting the pressure on those still to come.

Irish Make It a Double in Dublin as Germany Claims the 2012 Title

Dublin (IRL), 17 August 2012 – The Irish recorded a back-to-back double when winning the last leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 on home turf in Dublin, Ireland today.  The result rocketed them up the leaderboard to third place behind France in the final standings, but, despite a disappointing day when finishing an uncharacteristic last, it was Germany that claimed the series title for the fifth time in the 10-year history of the top-level league.

A 29-fault total put paid to German chances this afternoon, but, as Chef d’Equipe Sonke Sonksen said afterwards, “we are still walking away with a big cheque!” having collected the winner’s prize of €100,000. “We’ve had a fantastic season right up until Hickstead, and then the Irish showed us that they are getting stronger and stronger.  This is one of the best teams they’ve ever had,” he pointed out.  And there was certainly excitement in the Irish camp as the comparatively young foursome of Clem McMahon, Richie Moloney, Darragh Kerins and Cian O’Connor secured the win with considerable comfort, anchorman O’Connor not jumping in the second round as the destination of the coveted Aga Khan trophy was already decided.

France to the Fore at Final Leg in Dublin

Dublin (IRL), 16 August 2012 – The French will be first to go as the final leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway at the Royal Dublin Society showgrounds in Dublin, Ireland tomorrow afternoon.  Monsoon-like weather conditions descended on the Irish capital city yesterday making conditions very difficult for competitors on the opening-day. But the sun returned this morning, and all is set for an exciting conclusion to the eight-leg, eight-nation annual series.

The draw was conducted by FEI Jumping Director, John Roche, and Dublin Horse Show Show Director Pat Hanley. And there was a big smile on the face of Irish Chef d’Equipe, Robert Splaine, when his side got the coveted last-to-go spot.  “The time-allowed is likely to be tight and the course will be technical, so it’s always helpful to be drawn last. Running late gives us time to assess things,” the Irishman pointed out.

The order-of-go for tomorrow’s competition is: 1, France; 2, Sweden; 3, Belgium; 4, Great Britain; 5, The Netherlands; 6, Switzerland; 7, Germany; 8, Ireland.

New Olympic Medallists Line Out at FEI Nations Cup 2012 Series Finale in Dublin

Dublin (IRL), 14 August 2012 – With the roars of the crowd at Greenwich Park still ringing in their ears, five medallists from the London 2012 Olympic Games will be in action as the last leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway at the Royal Dublin Society showgrounds in Dublin (IRL) next Friday afternoon.  And it promises to be a real battle, because just 3.5 points separate the bottom six teams as the premier eight-leg, eight-nation contest draws to a close.

The defending series champions from Germany hold a strong 10-point lead over France at the head of affairs, but Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Ireland and Belgium are all bunched closely together, and none of them want to finish up at the bottom of the pile.

The Swiss side boasts the new Olympic individual jumping champion, Steve Guerdat, while Olympic team gold medallist, Nick Skelton, is included in the British selection.  Team silver medallists, Jur Vrieling and Marc Houtzager, will be lining out for The Netherlands and the Irish crowd will be celebrating the return of Cian O’Connor who clinched individual Olympic bronze.

Statement from FEI Secretary General on Disqualification of Canadian Horse Victor

London (GBR), 9 August 2012 – FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos has spoken publicly for the first time about the Canadian team Jumping horse Victor, which was disqualified under the FEI’s hypersensitivity protocol shortly before the Olympic team competition in London on 5 August.

“Disqualification of an athlete will always spark speculation, but in the case of Tiffany Foster’s horse Victor the protocol established very clearly that this was an obvious case of hypersensitivity,” Ingmar De Vos said today. “This was a unanimous decision, supported by four highly qualified veterinarians who specialise in testing for hypersensitivity using a system that has been monitoring FEI competitions since 2005.”

“These have been really great Games, and all the equestrian disciplines at Greenwich have been very special. The spectacular sport and the fantastic crowds are the memories that we will take away from London 2012.”

Top Ten Individual Finish for Fellers at 2012 Olympic Games

Rich Fellers and Flexible (Shannon Brinkman)

Greenwich, UK – Rich Fellers and Flexible put in a valiant effort in the Individual Show Jumping Final at the Olympic Games and came up with a top 10 finish on just five faults. Swiss rider Steve Guerdat put forward an immaculate effort to take Gold on Nino des Buissonnets while Gerco Schröder’s clear jump-off round meant he takes Individual Silver home to Holland with the appropriately named London. Irishman Cian O’Connor would have stopped the clock quicker in that jump-off on Blue Lloyd 12 but had the very last fence down to settle for Bronze.

The United States was represented by both Fellers (Sherwood, OR) and McLain Ward (Brewster, NY) in the Individual Final. Ward rode Antares F to a 12-fault effort in Round A, putting a foot in the water in addition to lowering the heights of two of the fences on Bob Ellis’ track. Five faults was the cut off for the top 20 who qualified for Round B, so only Fellers returned to the ring.

“It was a great course,” said Ward after Round A. “It was hard but fair. At this point you’re starting to run on fumes. But my horse should have been better. I felt like I rode the course better today than I rode a Nations Cup so I was pleased with my riding. As always, I will look to see what I could have done better down the last line.”
