Buffalo, NY – September 13, 2012 – It was the second day of the 66th Annual Buffalo International Horse Show, and the competition was fierce as the hunter action continued. Today marked the closing of the professional hunter divisions, as well as the announcement of the Grand Hunter Champion. It was Jennifer Alfano and Miss Lucy who claimed the prestigious honor with a clean sweep of the High Performance Hunters. Katie Robinson led the way in the Amateur-Owner Hunters with Rock Steady, riding to the top of the ranks with two blues, while Rachel Clawson guided two mounts to the Performance 3’6″-3’9″ Hunter Championships. Lauren Adornetto rode to the top of the leader board in the Level 2 Jumpers with Ramon.

The hunter course today was designed by Brian Brown of Bloomfield, NY, and comprised of green foliage, natural fences, brick walls and wooden gates. It was the handy course that proved a challenge. The course began on a diagonal heading away from the in gate with a strong canter. A hard right turn faced horse and rider with the white oxer on the outside line and then moved forward with riders taking a natural standalone vertical. They then made a left turn over a vertical and moved toward the serpentine of vertical-oxer combinations set at the far end of the ring. The course closed with a final white and stonewall oxer.

Buffalo, NY – September 12, 2012 – The Indoor Arena was filled with hunter excitement as the first day of the Buffalo International Horse Show (BIHS) commenced at the Buffalo Equestrian Center. The premier fundraiser for the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, the BIHS offered an array of hunter classes for all experience levels, seeing some of the top hunter professionals vie for the blue ribbon prizes.  Liza Boyd dominated the Green Working Hunters, while Jennifer Alfano swept the High Performance Hunters and took home the consistent ribbons in the Conformation Hunters.

The horse show opened to a cool breeze this morning, welcoming competitors to the ring.  The Green Working Hunters were the first to attempt the hunter course designed by Brian Brown. Beautifully set, the course consisted of natural fences, including an in-and-out leading to an oxer, as well as several standalone obstacles that challenged both horse and rider alike within the confines of the Indoor.

“When I was cantering around I was thinking that this ring is definitely going to sharpen me up. Coming in here after doing the derbies in the big fields, I know I have to work on rideability. When you land you don’t have any time for trouble. It definitely keeps you sharp as a rider,” eventual leader of the Green Working Hunter division Elizabeth Boyd remarked.

Their fire did not stop burning as they blazed the way to the top of the $50,000 Chicago International Hunter Derby, presented by Canadian National Railroad. Alfano and Jersey Boy not only took the first place prize, but Miss Lucy came in a close second place finish, as well.

Bobby Murphy of Lexington, KY, returned to design the vintage hunt course, utilizing the presenting sponsor’s industry as a main form of inspiration. The grassy track was set with obstacles reminiscent of locomotives and even an in-and-out that appeared to represent a railroad crossing. The course was also set with many brush obstacles, hay bales and logs. Murphy left nothing to chance as his course, especially on the second day, seemed to become the story itself.

Alfano entered the event without hesitation, using her veteran mounts to the best of her ability, taking the course with confidence and precision. It was the pace that moved Alfano into the top of the 18 returning contenders. Especially aboard Jersey Boy, she kept a good gallop throughout the course, using his strongest ability to make him shine. Both mounts definitely continued to show that SBS Farms is an unstoppable force.
