Friday Is Barns’ Night Out at the Alltech National Horse Show

Jacob Pope (pictured with Uno), of Columbia, MD, won the 2012 ASPCA Maclay National Championships.

[LEXINGTON, Ky.] – Horse-crazy kids will put the horses out to pasture and pull on their party boots for Alltech’s Barn Night in the Bluegrass, presented by Group C, at the Alltech National Horse Show. During this barn bazaar on Friday, Nov. 1, youth from around the region are invited to meet with all-star equestrians and show true “barn spirit” for a chance to win prizes in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Open to young riders, equestrian groups and kids who simply love horses, Barn Night in the Bluegrass encourages youth to make banners, dress in horse gear and wear their barn’s logo to participate in spirit competitions held during the evening’s events. Spirit prizes awarded to Barn Night participants throughout the night will include year-long subscriptions to Sidelines magazine, official merchandise of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy, a year’s supply of LIFEFORCE Elite natural digestive supplement and a Lyons Farm barn grill-out package sponsored by Alltech. The most spirited barn or equestrian group will win a golf cart for their facility. One super-spirited Barn Night participant will win a trip for four to attend the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy, France.

Barn Night in the Bluegrass participants will be grouped in a premier seating section of the Alltech Arena while world-class equestrians aim for record heights during Friday’s LIFEFORCE Elite Puissance competition. All Barn Night participants will receive a complimentary gift bag supported by Sidelines magazine and the Kentucky Horse Council. When the class has ended, youth will be invited into the ring for autographs and pictures with elite equestrians competing at the Alltech National Horse Show.

In addition to the equestrian action, Barn Night youth and their families can enjoy activities that are part of Alltech’s first-ever Kentucky Gathering, including novelty shopping venues, a showcase of local foods and craft brews, and a photo opportunity with the new Alltech National Horse Show mascot. Local band Girls Guns and Glory will amp up the spirit with live music throughout Barn Night.

Alltech’s Barn Night in the Bluegrass is presented by Group C with support from Sidelines magazine and the Kentucky Horse Council. In the weeks leading up to the Alltech National Horse Show, Alltech representatives will visit local equestrian groups to drop off a “Barn Bucket” containing a set of free tickets to Friday night of the Alltech National Horse Show. If your equestrian group or facility would like to request a “Barn Bucket,” please contact Chelsea Magee at cmagee@alltech.com.

Registration for Barn Night is free and required for participants to be eligible for prizes. To register, e-mail the names of participants and their equestrian facility of affiliation, if applicable, to Chelsea Magee at cmagee@alltech.com. Registration is also available at www.alltechnationalhorseshow.com/event-information/barn-night-in-the-bluegrass/.

Kentuckians will gather this fall to celebrate three proud traditions deeply rooted in the Bluegrass state – horses, heritage and hops. Alltech will host the first-ever Kentucky Gathering, Oct. 29-Nov.3, at the Alltech Arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park. This week-long festival includes the world-class equestrian sport of the Alltech National Horse Show, the Biggest Loser 5k RunWalk, a Taste Kentucky showcase featuring locally crafted brews and foods, and many other fun-filled activities for the entire family.

An American equestrian tradition, the Alltech National Horse Show, Oct. 29-Nov.3, has reached its stride in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. Reserved for the year’s top talent on the North American show circuit, the Alltech National Horse Show opens the ring to a variety of equestrian classes and disciplines, with events including the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix, the $50,000 LIFEFORCE Elite Puissance and the ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Finals for youth competitors. For more information, visit www.alltechnationalhorseshow.com.

The 2013 Alltech National Horse Show takes center stage on October 29 – November 3, 2013, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to the top rated hunters and the ASPCA Maclay National Championship, the show features world-class international, open, junior and amateur-owner jumpers competing for the biggest prize money on the United States indoor tour.

Founded in 1883 at the original Madison Square Garden, the National Horse Show is America’s oldest indoor horse show, firmly established as a major fixture on the national and international sports and social event calendars. The National Horse Show Association’s primary activity is the annual production of the National Horse Show and all ancillary events. We really appreciate it.”  A free cocktail hour took place prior to the event sponsored by Robyn Reilly and Cissy Sullivan’s Aiken Fine Properties as well as a new addition the ”Pony Up” for First Tee headed up by Charlie Herrick which gave attendees a chance to place their bids on the winning team for their own chance to win prizes.

The Galloping Golfers, a team composed of rider Susie Clarke, Carole Pincavage, Mary Shultz, Chris Wingeier, Karen Vijuk, and Kenny Evenson, claimed the trophy, completing the course in 140.6, a more than 26 second margin advantage over runner-up, the Aiken Department of Public Safety team, anchored by professional rider Casey Mason.  The First Tee of Aiken team placed third.  “I’m speechless at the outpouring of support from our community,” said Elizabeth Smith, First Tee of Aiken executive director. “It’s amazing to watch these two groups of people come together to rally and have fun to benefit 12,000 young people.”  Following the relay dinner and dancing took place under the VIP tent.  For more information on The First Tee of Aiken, please go to www.firstteeaiken.org  or call 803-226-0053.

The culmination of the Aiken Fall series came Saturday night with the $15,000 Aiken Fall Festival Jumper Classic sponsored by The Willcox of Aiken, SC.  An exhibitor’s party also took place under the VIP tent catered by The Willcox and sponsored by DFG Stables, Liz Tarumianz, Allison Mills, and Booth Parker.  In the jump off it came down to the final horse in order S-Acorda Donaldson and rider Angel Karolyi to challenge the time to beat put in by Mario Garcia and Pacha de Nantuel.  In an exciting finish Karolyi crossed the timers in just .146 seconds faster than Garcia to claim the victory.  “It was a very good round for us,” remarked Karolyi of his winning ride.  “The jump-off was tough since the lines were set so you couldn’t really do anything but the correct number of strides.  We had to find other places to cut time.  I knew I was really going to have to push to get the victory, and she really rose to the occasion.”

Sunday, the final day of the series, featured the many of the shows circuit grand champions being awarded.  Points were totaled throughout the two week series in many of the hunter and jumper divisions to crown the grand champions. Earlier in the week the At A Glance Grand Hunter Grand Championship went to Blue Moon owned by Susan Ross and ridden by Elizabeth Boyd.   Courtash Kalidascope and owner/rider Whitney McKinley were awarded the Good Golly Miss Molly Perpetual Trophy for Grand Pony presented by the Cram Family.  The Junior Hunter Grand Champion and Joyce Lineburger Memorial Perpetual Trophy donated by Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Tarumianz was presented to Cool Music and Megan Rosenthal.

Animal Health Trust Confirmed as Olympia Horse Show’s 2013 ‘Charity of the Year’

19 September 2013 – Veterinary charity, the Animal Health Trust (AHT), has been announced as the Olympia Horse Show’s 2013 charity of the year.

Throughout the week of 16 December 2013, The Olympia Exhibition Halls, located in Hammersmith, West London, play host to a packed timetable of all things equestrian. The event includes top class international competition for show jumping, dressage and driving, boasting a total of over 80,000 visitors.

Each year the show supports a charity, which is relevant to the UK’s equestrian community. Previous charities selected by the show include the Ebony Horse Club, The Horse Trust and World Horse Welfare. However, this year organisers felt that they wanted to support the AHT and the exceptional work that it carries out.

The AHT works behind the scenes constantly monitoring equine disease around the world, identifying threats to the British equine population and putting in place robust plans to head off infectious disease wherever possible. In addition to its disease surveillance work, the AHT undertakes extensive on-going research into minimising the risk of injury to sports horses.

Jo Peck, Marketing Director for the Olympia Horse Show, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Animal Health Trust this year.  The Show Committee selected the AHT from a number of charities as they felt that its work deserved recognition amongst the equestrian community. The afternoon performance on Wednesday 18 December 2013 will be dedicated to the Animal Health Trust, and 50p from every seat sold will go to the AHT.”

One of the AHT’s key roles will be to host the Shopping Drop Off Point. With an entire hall dedicated to shopping at the event, visitors are invited to ‘check in’ purchased items at the Bag Drop to avoid taking them into the performance area. The Drop Off will be manned by AHT representatives, allowing visitors to find out how research undertaken by the AHT has directly affected sports horses, as well as how its work also benefits dogs and cats.

Dr Mark Vaudin, Incoming Chief Executive at the Animal Health Trust, is thrilled about the selection, and said: “The AHT does so much to improve equine health, from performance and injury related clinical treatment to research into disease. It’s wonderful for the AHT to be recognised for these contributions, and to have the opportunity to share the importance of our work with so many horse enthusiasts.”

Book tickets now for the equestrian world’s best Christmas party at www.olympiahorseshow.com or by telephoning the box office on 0871 230 5580. Tickets are priced between £20 and £59 with various discounts available for groups, seniors and children.

Brigitte McDonald Wins the Silver Anniversary CET Medal Prairie Regional Finals

Brigitte McDonald competing in the ride off.

Calgary, Alberta – It was an emotion filled week at Anderson Ranch for the Rocky Mountain Fall Classic and the Running Fox CET Prairie Regional Finals. Throughout the year riders competed, looking to qualify to ride in these finals, which was the last stepping stone on the road to the 25th Annual CET Medal Finals held at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in November.

It has been a challenging year in Calgary with the loss and devastation during the flooding this past summer. This past week, however, shocked the equine world with the tragic loss of one of Calgary’s finest equine personalities, International riders, Canadian Equestrian Team member and finest horseman, Bryan Anderson, who passed away after a fall with a horse out riding his fields at his ranch south of town.

Bryan was a true competitor, always rising up to the challenges that faced him in the ring. Countless Grand Prix victories both nationally and internationally lined his resume, proving what a skilled rider he was. But aside from being a tough challenger in the competition arena, he was also a highly respected horseman and coach.

Not only building the skills and knowledge of his students, Bryan always taught them to rise up when facing adversity. He showed that numerous times in the ring, he would always be looking for the win, but regardless of the placing the one thing that was never waiving was his amazing sportsmanship. All of that was instilled in his students, and this week was no different.

Therefore a fitting end to the CET Regional Finals saw Brigitte McDonald, a student of Bryan Anderson, on top of the podium. Not only haven risen up to all the challenges set through the 4 phases, but standing up to the emotional strain of having lost her coach and friend earlier in the week.

“It is very exciting and I am very happy. I have worked a long time and put a lot of hours into this and it finally has come to fruition,” said Brigitte about her win. Brigitte was coached during the finals by Bobbie Reber, Karen Linkletter, and Bryan’s brother John Anderson. In addition she was on a new mount for her owned by John Anderson & Tracey Epp. “He is a little bit greener and this was his first CET, but he answered a lot of questions that I asked and put in a lot of effort for me so it turned out great,” commented Brigitte on her partner.

She kept her trainer close to her heart this week. “I wore the armband with his initials on it in the colour green, as he always bugged us that he wanted the barn colours to be green. But we were all so stubborn and would never let him do it, but I thought that I would give it to him this week,” tearfully reflected Brigitte. “He started my riding career and taught me everything I know, so I thank him for that. This one is for you, Bryan.”

The CET Finals were founded by Barbara Anderson, the matriarch of the Anderson family. “I was amazed at the increase in the abilities on the flat, the depth of these riders has increased over the 25 years,” remarked the CET Finals founder. “Their capabilities and abilities are far better than they were when it first started, and I can’t believe it was 25 years ago.”

Barbara talked about the Regional Finals champion. “I thought that under the circumstances of losing her coach and also a member of our family – she had worked with Bryan for 7 years – that she did an exceptional job. She rose to the occasion and she did wear an armband with Bryan’s initials on it every time she was competing. But I thought she was exceptional; I am very proud of her.”

Barbara Anderson will attend the 25th anniversary of the CET Finals at the Royal Winter Fair this fall.

There was an additional honour that was given out on the 25th Anniversary of the CET finals. The award introduced this year was as a sportsmanship award. All the competitors in the CET Prairie Regional Finals were given ballots and voted on their choice of who displayed the best sportsmanship. That distinction went to Brigitte McDonald as well, displaying such amazing regard for all the other competitors.

The story behind this award, aptly named “The Come Hell or High Water Cup”, is one of people helping one another during the flooding that happened in Calgary and surrounding area this summer.

“It was donated by David and Marcy Scratch. Their family donated some money towards the prizes for the CET medal this year. They were victims of the horrendous floods in Calgary, and we were able to help them out with a home for a month, on the ranch, while their house was being repaired,” remarked John Anderson, President of Rocky Mountain Show Jumping. “They wanted to do something in thanks, and came up with this great idea. I asked my brother if he would like to use my horse for Brigitte to compete with in the finals, and he came out with her to work with the duo numerous times in preparation. It was great to see how well they worked together, which only solidified to me his excellence as a coach,” added John.

In addition to Brigitte McDonald representing the Prairie Regional at the CET Finals this fall, she will be joined by 3 other very skilled riders, as the top 4 from this event qualify for the championship. Here is a list of the top 4 from the Running Fox CET Regional Medal Finals that qualified for the Royal:

Running Fox CET Prairie Regional Finals Top Four

1. Brigitte McDonald
2. Breanne McAllister
3. Chelsea Walsh
4. Amy Higgins

Congratulations and good luck to Brigitte McDonald, Breanne McAllister, Chelsea Walsh and Amy Higgins focus moves towards this fall and Toronto.

Jumpers Shine during Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals

©ESI Photography. Sue DeCone and Delucia.

SAUGERTIES, NY (September 16, 2013) – It was all about speed in the Strongid C 2X Grand Prix Stadium as jumper riders took their turn in the spotlight during the 23rd annual Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals at HITS-on-the-Hudson. Junior/Amateur, Adult and Child riders alike all eyed $7,500 prize purses and pursued national titles over courses designed by Jerry Dougherty of Bokeelia, Florida.

$7,500 Junior/Amateur Jumper Low Classic
Sue DeCone of Bridgewater, New Jersey was the only rider to best Dougherty’s course, jumping to the only clear round in the first round of the $7,500 Junior/Amateur Jumper Low Classic. She and her eight-year-old Irish-bred mare Delucia, owned by Portsmouth Farm, LLC, were second to go and left all the jumps up while staying under the 86 seconds time allowed.

“I was ecstatic when I realized that I was the only one clear!” said DeCone after the class. “This Final is so great – everyone loves riding in this big ring and it makes for good courses and great classes.”

DeCone has been partnered with Delucia four two years, and admits that while the mare makes her work for every victory, Delucia always gives it her all.

“She lives up to her ‘chestnut mare’ reputation, but is super careful and brave in the show ring,” said DeCone. “We qualified to come to [Marshall & Sterling] Finals last year, but she was still a little young. She has really stepped up to the plate this year.”

Delucia lost a shoe early in the round, but according to DeCone, it didn’t faze either one of them and the mare jumped beautifully.

Stacey Walsh of Douglassville, Pennsylvania and Abby Slaven of Ocala, Florida completed the course without rails coming down, but time faults kept them from securing a jump-off. Slaven was second aboard her own Renaissance, while five time faults bumped Walsh to fourth on her own Leon. Madison Newman of Wellington, Florida was third in the irons of Edulcee D’Hulst, owned by Todd Minikus, Ltd and Patti Subik of Amsterdam, New York capped with top five with her own Tallulah.

$7,500 Adult Jumper Classic
Of the eight riders who advanced to the jump-off in the $7,500 Adult Jumper Classic, Tammy Eyerman Kelly of Long Valley, New Jersey and her own Belvedere were the lone pair to ride fault-free over the shortened course. Riding last, Kelly knew all she had to do was leave the rails up – she took her time and accomplished just that.  Three time faults blemished the round, but her ride was still good enough for the win.

“I knew that if I took my time, I could go clear,” said Kelly. “Perhaps I took my time a little too much, but in the past 25 years that I have been doing this, I haven’t had a win like this, so it was very special.”

Belvedere is a 16-year-old Appendix Quarter Horse gelding and, according to Kelly, he always walks in the ring as surveys it like a battlefield. He wants to win, she said. Kelly finished the jump-off with the three time faults and a time of 56.1 seconds.

After winning the $2,500 Adult Jumper class earlier in the day, Alissa Kinsey of Danville, New Hampshire rode her own Grisset to second place in the Classic. They crossed the timers in a blistering 39.11 seconds, but had a rail down at the second fence for four jumping faults.

Elizabeth Kirby of Mendham, New Jersey was both third and fourth with her self-owned horses Winter White and Amelia. With Winter White, Kirby was under the time allowed in 40.40 seconds, but clipped a rail at the second-to-last fence and landed with four faults. She rode Amelia to four-fault round in 41.98 seconds. Capping the top five was Cienne Warren of Tinton Falls, New Jersey and her won Fabius. They finished with four faults in 48.39 seconds.

$7,500 Children’s Jumper Classic
Natalie Hughes and her family made the trip from their home in Spring Hill, Florida for the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals and returned with an impressive list of accolades. After placing second in the $2,500 Children’s Jumper class, Hughes and her own Ramona Quimby rode to the top spot in the $7,500 Children’s Jumper Classic. To add to the list, Hughes was also named high-point Children’s Jumper at the annual Marshall & Sterling Insurance League year-end awards banquet, held at Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern on Friday evening.

Hughes was one of five to advance to the jump-off and was second to return. “The girl before me was fast, so I made a last minute decision in the ring to do an inside turn to one fence –  and my horse was so fast,” she said.

Standing at only 15.3, Romana Quimby, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood-Thoroughbred cross, may be small but is the “best horse in the world,” according to Hughes. “She is so much fun – she sees really long spots, but is so athletic that she makes it look easy,” said Hughes. “She’s a hard ride and it took us a while to work together, but now we get along in the ring and really work together.”

Hughes and Romana Quimby were the fastest of three fault-free rides and stopped the clock in 48.03 seconds, just one one-hundredth of a second faster than Cayla Fisher of Ridgefield, Connecticut who rode to second place aboard Blue River Farm Sales’ Windo.

Third place was presented to Sophia Bertot and her own 2 The Nines after riding to a clear jump-off round in 52.42 seconds. Hadley Benneyan of Chester, New York was fourth with Michael Kirby’s Texas Tea. They had four faults and a time of 43.37 in the jump-off. Alexandra Rose of New York, New York rounded out the top five with McLain Ward’s Cevin 24 with four faults in 45.92 seconds.

This year marks the first Finals for Hughes as well as her first year in the jumper ring, making her a debut into the jumper world a successful one.

Angel Karolyi Speeds to Victory in $15,000 Open Jumper Classic in Aiken

Aiken, South Carolina – Venezuela’s Angel Karolyi put in an impressive performance to claim victory in dramatic fashion in the $15,000 Open Jumper Classic on Saturday, September 14, at the Aiken Fall Festival II in Aiken, South Carolina.

Nine of 15 horse and rider combinations would advance through the first round to tackle the shortened jump-off track set by designer J. P. Godard.  Seven would go on to put in double clear performances, making time the deciding factor.  Karolyi advanced to the jump-off aboard two mounts, S-Acorada Donaldson, the eventual winner, and Undercover.

Returning first aboard Undercover, Karolyi put in a solid clear round good enough for seventh place.  He and the 12-year-old gelding by Heartbreaker have only recently begun competing together.

“I’ve had him since mid-summer and we’ve really only done a few 1.20m classes together,” noted Karolyi.  “I haven’t shown him as much as some of my others because we were getting him more fit.  He jumped beautifully and this was a great class for him to get more exposure and for me to get to know him a little better.  He’s a lot of fun to ride and has a very flashy style over the jumps.”

As the final competitor on course, Karolyi knew he and S-Acorada Donaldson would have to put in a near flawless performance to take the lead from Mario Garcia and Pacha de Nantuel, who had set the time to beat at 38.508 seconds.  Rising to the challenge, the 11-year-old Holsteiner mare performed beautifully for Karolyi, shaving 0.146 seconds off Garcia’s time to earn the win.

Karolyi has also only been paired with S-Acorada Donaldson since mid-summer, but the partnership has already produced a number of exciting results.  In addition to Saturday’s win, they also finished fifth in the same class a week earlier.  Both S-Acorada Donaldson and Undercover are owned by Hollow Creek Farm, a large training business Karolyi operates in Aiken with business partner Andrea King.

Karolyi’s student and fellow Venezuelan Victor Segovia also enjoyed success in the $15,000 Open Jumper Classic, capturing fifth aboard his veteran grand prix mount Romeo.  He and the 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, owned by The Romeo Group, captured third in the same class during the Aiken Fall Festival I.

The Hollow Creek Farm team will next head to Argentina where star student 16-year-old Emanuel Andrade, also from Venezuela, will contest the FEI South American Junior Jumping Championship, running September 17 to 22.

Hollow Creek Farm has the unique distinction of winning three prestigious titles at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL.  Andrade was named the Leading Jumper Rider, King was named the Leading Jumper Trainer, and Hollow Creek Farm was named the Leading Jumper Owner.

Brianne Goutal and Nice De Prissey Gallop to Victory in $200,000 American Gold Cup

North Salem, NY – September 15, 2013 – On a perfect day in front of a sold-out crowd of over 4,000, 25-year-old Brianne Goutal added her name to the historical list of riders who have won the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W, Presented by Suncast. Thirty-six entries gathered at Old Salem Farm for the international jumping competition, but it was Goutal and her talented mount Nice De Prissey that scored the winning honors after executing a quick and accurate jump-off effort. Tracy Fenney and MTM Timon laid down the first faultless round for second place, while Beezie Madden’s speedy four-fault round over the short track earned third with Coral Reef Via Volo.

Ireland’s Alan Wade presented many tests on the Grand Prix Field for today’s riders, including an open water, a skinny fence, a tall plank vertical, a vertical-oxer double combination, and an oxer-oxer-vertical triple combination. Ten of the original 36 starters advanced to the jump-off.

“I didn’t expect that many clear,” admitted Beezie Madden, currently ranked number two in the world. “I thought it was big enough, and I was surprised the plan didn’t cause more trouble. The double I thought was going to be difficult and it didn’t cause that much trouble. The triple combination I thought would be quite scopey and it only got a few. I thought the skinny at the end would be more difficult too. It jumped a little easier than it walked. The ground was excellent and there was some good jumping.”

For the tiebreaker, competitors began over a new oxer-vertical bending line to a tall vertical and last two obstacles in the triple combination. Then they made a sharp roll back to a single over, bending to a tall vertical and finishing away from the gate over a wide oxer.

Tracy Fenney was the first in the ring during the opening round, and her faultless round meant she was the first in the ring for the tiebreaker with MTM Timon, owned by MTM Farm of Flower Mound, TX. The long-time partners were able to complete another perfect course, breaking the beam in 40.75 seconds to put the pressure on the remaining riders.

“I knew that all the riders behind me are super-fast riders, so I just went at my speed,” admitted Fenney. “I was glad I didn’t have to watch everyone else go, because then you get crazier than you need to be, so it was good for me to go in and go the way I go. There weren’t any super tight turns; you just did a lot of galloping.”

Brianne Goutal and Nice De Prissey, owned by Remarkable Farms LP of Royal Palm Beach, FL, were ready to answer the challenge when they stepped on to the Grand Prix Field next for the short course. Utilizing her mount’s large stride, Goutal was able to race quickly to each obstacle and leave each rail untouched. They sped through the finish line in 40.18 seconds to capture the early lead.

“My horse has a huge stride, and I should have been able to do one less in the first line, but I didn’t get it,” explained Goutal. “My second line was slow into the double, so I thought if the other riders did the numbers quicker than I did they could catch me. Normally it’s easier to go at the end of a jump-off, but I think when you are jumping on grass it is easier to go at the beginning because you have better ground.”

Although Beezie Madden’s mare Coral Reef Via Volo, owned by Coral Reef Ranch of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, is one of the smaller horses on the circuit, she has a large stride and Madden was able to leave out strides in lines to stay right on Goutal’s heels. Unfortunately, she laid on the gas to the final oxer and incurred four faults, and although her time of 39.65 seconds was faster, the reigning World Cup Champion had to settle for the third place award.

“I took a shot,” said Madden. “I left a few strides out and took a chance and the last fence, and if it would have stayed up it would have been great.”

Charlie Jayne was just 2/10ths of a second slower than Madden with Chill R Z, owned by Maura Thatcher and Alex Jayne of Elgin, IL, and with an error at the vertical before the last fence their four-fault round would place fourth in a time of 39.86 seconds. With horses of a similar size and speed, Kent Farrington and Uceko, owned by RCG Farm of Ridgefield, CT, tied with Katie Dinan and Nougat Du Vallet, owned by Grant Road Partners of New York, NY, for the fifth place honors after they each lowered the height of a fence and broke the beam at 40.97 seconds to round out the top six finishers and seal Goutal’s victory.

Goutal began riding Nice De Prissey four years ago when he was just 8 years old. “It took me a little time to get used to him. He has a big stride and touchy mouth. Last year he started coming into his own and jumping consistently well. Now, I am feeling really good about the way he is jumping.”

The next stop for Goutal will be the New Albany Classic, and she hopes to qualify for the team at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.

This summer, Goutal began riding with Katie and Henri Prudent, who have helped produce some of the most talented young riders in the United States. “I trained with them a few years ago and I always said I was going to start riding with them again,” she said. “They are a great team. They are so fun, and I think when you have a team like that around you then you are very lucky. They have helped me a lot. I have great horses as well, so we are just fine tuning, and they see things that I don’t notice and I don’t think most people notice.”

Goutal also credits her barn manager Tatiana Gabrush with much of her success. “I am a mess to organize and we are always going back and forth from Europe to America,” she noted. “I am very disorganized in general. She is responsible for everything, and without her the whole thing falls apart.”

This marks the second year that the American Gold Cup has been held at Old Salem Farm, and the new home has proved to be a perfect match for the historical event. “This is a great show,” said Goutal. “I think it’s great to have this venue, and it’s going to become one of the nicest horse shows in America. I think we are all very grateful that it is here.”

Stadium Jumping created the American Gold Cup, and President Michael Morrissey commented, “This was spectacular. I think we’ve elevated the sport to where it needs to be. The crowd was wonderful. It has been a long time since we’ve had crowds like that. There is still room for a little improvement but I think this was a fantastic event at a fantastic facility. We won’t take a back seat to anybody.”

The American Gold Cup has proved to be one of the best events in the United States for many years, with the country’s top horse and rider competitions vying for the winning title and the opportunity to have their named on the prestigious trophy. This year, Brianne Goutal’s name will be added to the list of winners for her incredible effort during today’s international jumping competition.
