Conor Swail Claims Caledon Cup at Caledon Equestrian Park

Palgrave, Ontario – For the second day in a row, Ireland’s Conor Swail emerged victorious to win the $35,000 CSI2* RAM Equestrian Caledon Cup, Phase II, presented by Aviva, and claim the coveted Caledon Cup trophy at the CSI2* Canadian Show Jumping Tournament held September 18 to 22 at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave, ON.

On Saturday, Swail had topped a 22-horse starting field to win Phase I of the RAM Equestrian Caledon Cup competition riding Lansdowne.  A day later, their fortunes remained the same, as the pair led the victory gallop after holding off jump-off challengers Ljubov Kochetova of Russia, David Arcand, the father and son double threat of Ian and Jonathon Millar, and their student, Jordan MacPherson.

While 10 had found their way around Michel Vaillancourt’s track on Saturday without incurring faults, only eight would be successful on Sunday.  However, MacPherson’s was the only new face amongst the jump-off line-up, as Vaillancourt once again pitted the best against the best in the all-deciding final round.  The individual silver medalist at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Vaillancourt has been appointed course designer for the show jumping events at the 2015 Pan American Games, which will be hosted by the Caledon Equestrian Park.

For the second day in a row, Russia’s Ljubov Kochetova jumped clear with Wilford 2, only to be caught by the clock for one time fault, leaving her ninth in the final placings.  Chris Sorensen of Caledon East, ON, who will be representing Canada next month in Nations’ Cup competition in Brazil, turned in the fastest four-fault performance riding The Jolly Group’s Wriomf to round out the top 10.

23-year-old David Arcand of Mont-Royal, QC, produced the only four-fault performance in the jump-off to slot into eighth position with Vledder, his 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding.

With seven riders again producing clear rounds in the jump-off, time would be the final decider.  Jonathon Millar of Perth, ON, was the first rider back to attempt the shortened jump-off track with Contino 14, turning in a time of 41.51 seconds.  He would soon be overtaken by the next rider in the line-up, Swail riding Game Ready, owned by Susan Grange, who stopped the clock in 39.03.  Shaving exactly three seconds off the Irishman’s time was Jordan MacPherson, 23, who stopped the clock in 36.03 seconds with Piccobello du Val de Geer.  No strangers to the winner’s circle at the Caledon Equestrian Park, the Toronto native and her 14-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare had won the $35,000 CSI2* RAM Equestrian Grand Prix in August.

Ljubov Kochetova of Russia took a shot with Aslan, falling short in 38.81 seconds to place fourth overall while MacPherson’s coach, 10-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, came close with Star Power, crossing the timers in 37.33 seconds to take third place for Team Works.

MacPherson’s time had only to withstand one last challenger in the form of Swail and Lansdowne, who had claimed victory in dramatic fashion one day earlier.  Proving to be on form, the pair tightened their turns and sailed around Vaillancourt’s track almost two seconds faster, stopping the clock in 34.07 seconds for victory.

“It always helps to go last, although Jordan was very quick and she made it where I had to take all the risks and hope that everything worked out,” said Swail, 41.  “My horse was terrific.  There were a few turns where a horse with less quality might not have come back with the same result that he did.  He’s obviously one of the favourites at the show, but it’s nice that he’s expected to do well and that he doesn’t let you down.  That’s the sign of a top horse.”

Of the conditions, the rider who hails from County Down commented, “The new footing makes a huge difference, and it even showed in the results.  The course was well-built, but the footing was so good that I think the horses jumped well off of it.  There were more clears than I thought there would be.”

In addition to winning the $35,000 CSI2* RAM Equestrian Caledon Cup, Phase II, presented by Aviva, Swail was also awarded the RAM Equestrian Caledon Cup.

“It worked out well for Lansdowne,” said Swail of the 10-year-old chestnut Dutch Warmblood stallion owned by Sue and Arial Grange of Cheltenham, ON.  “It’s his last show of the year, and it’s great for him to finish off on the best note possible.  Now he gets a well-deserved rest.”

Sunday’s victory marked the fourth one of the year for Swail at the Caledon Equestrian Park.  Before winning back-to-back grand prix events at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament with Lansdowne, Swail won the $20,000 Adequan Open Welcome with Martha Louise and the $30,000 RAM Equestrian Grand Prix with Game Ready, both owned by the Grange family, back in May.  Before this year, he had never before competed at the Caledon Equestrian Park.

And Caledon Equestrian Park is the ideal host to international competition.  Athletes come from all over the world to compete at the world-class facility, and the CSI2* Canadian Show Jumping Tournament was no exception.

“The riders jumped in reserve order of finish from yesterday, and the cream rose to the top,” said Craig Collins, managing partner of Equestrian Management Group, which operates the Caledon Equestrian Park.  “It was an exciting jump-off.  After Jordan MacPherson went, I didn’t think anyone would beat her, but the turn that Conor did at the top of the course was unbelievable!  Lansdowne jumped beautifully and deserved to win.”

Collins continued, “Michel Vaillancourt did a great job and was complimented by everyone on his courses.  Yesterday was a supreme test of the new footing with all of the rain, and everyone commented on how good the ground was and how good the footing was.  We had riders from Ireland, Russia, Vanessa Mannix from Calgary, and Quebec was very well-represented.  We had competitors from right across the country.  And it was great to have Jonathon Millar back with us, qualifying two horses for the jump-off.”

While the Caledon Cup was the featured event of the day, the inaugural $20,000 MVS Solutions Junior/Amateur Pan Am Challenge proved to be a spectacular addition to the Tournament’s schedule.  Riders qualified throughout the season in the 1.20m, 1.30m and 1.40m divisions, and went head-to-head jumping at their respective heights at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament.  Sydney Vince, competing in the 1.30m section of the competition, emerged victorious riding Echodancer van de Heffinck, earning $6,000 in prize money for owner Trinity Farms of Burlington, ON.  Page Mawson and her own Under Pressure took second place and $5,000 in prize money while Adrien Vilcini and her Gervantus earned $3,000 for their third place finish.

The CSI2* Canadian Show Jumping Tournament is proud to benefit the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, raising more than $15,000 in 2013 for the non-profit organization.  This year’s fundraiser saw corporate partners uniting to underwrite the costs of hosting a two-day Children’s Wish celebration which included brunch and ringside tables for Saturday and Sunday’s grand prix events.  Thanks to the generosity of Alberta Premium, Brick Brewery Co., Brookvalley Developments, Schickendanz Brothers, TechPower Developments, and Gourmandissimo Catering and Fine Foods, every dollar from the purchase of tickets went directly to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.

With the final event of the season having come to a conclusion, phase two of construction now begins at the Caledon Equestrian Park in preparation for hosting the 2015 Pan American Games.  A new grand prix stadium, spectator pavilion, indoor complex, and new FEI barn are all expected to be complete by spring of 2014.

Ashley Foster and Leena L Capture ASPCA Maclay Regional Finals at Southeast Medal Finals

Ashley Foster and Leena L. Photos by Randi Muster.

Jacksonville, FL – September 22, 2013 – The highly-anticipated ASPCA Maclay Regionals were held on the final day of the 2013 Southeast Medal Finals at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Ashley Foster of Brookeville, MD executed Allen Rheinheimer’s course flawlessly aboard Leena L, owned by KMW Ponies LLC, to take home the coveted prize out of a total of 39 riders. Her life-long friend, Haley Waters, earned the second place prize with an impressive performance with Quito, owned by Chuck and Dana Waters. Barbara Ann Merryman, who won the Phelps Media Group Junior Medal on Saturday, came in third aboard Don Stewart’s Fernway Park.

Rheinheimer built a challenging course that asked many questions of the junior riders. The first line was an oxer to an oxer going away from the in gate. A tricky forward triple bar to a natural vertical then a quieter five to a natural oxer challenged some, while fence 8, a natural vertical then an immediate rollback to fence 9 had a number of riders cutting it too close.

“I think it was an excellent course,” said show organizer James Lala.  “I think it is about precision and pace. The two things we talk about the most in riding and teaching are pace and line. I think it was the foundation of negotiating this course correctly. Having the knowledge and the experience, to know what to do and how to fix it when plan A doesn’t work, is what separates the exceptional riders from the good riders.

“The errors occurred at different places in the course, not all in one spot,” continued Lala. “To me, that is the sign of a great course designer. I think he asked many important questions in this course. HIs use of oxers, natural hunter-type jumps, jumper-style jumps, the fill, the flowers, the turns and the use of the islands is brilliant. Allen is a master course designer. He asks the right questions, at the right level.”

“It was difficult,” said Foster about the course.  “My horse rides more like a jumper and this was more like a jumper course, which played to my advantage. I know her and I knew she would jump the triple bar really big so I stayed out and I did the six to the five and it made the five easier.” From fence 8 to fence 9 Foster also stayed out and did it in seven instead of six.

Foster’s mother Patty Foster is a trainer and runs Rolling Acres Farm in Brookeville, MD with her sister, Mary Lisa Leffler, who also rides and trains. She rides with Bobby Braswell and Courtney de Hechavarria for equitation.

“I had a pretty good week. We came here last year and we came back. I’m glad it went well. I’m glad I made it to Kentucky.”

Haley Waters and Quito

“I had a different plan going in than what happened,” said Waters, the daughter of Dana and Chuck Waters of Waterworks Farm in Ocala, FL. “I had to make some adjustments. But he (Quito) went great. There was the forward five and I ended up staying out and doing six and he was really good. It rode a lot smoother in six. I’m excited. I did better than last year. I’m happy.  I like to thank my parents and my trainer, Daniel Damen.”

Foster and Waters have known each other all their lives. “They have been together since they were a year old at the horse shows,” said Dana Waters, about the top two finishers. “Same babysitters, same birthday parties – to see them together now is really fun.”

Earlier in the day, Gallant, owned and ridden by Millie Russell, won the SEMF Adult Hunter Classic with smooth and rhythmical performance over the beautiful hunter course in the indoor arena.  The pair also won the Adult Amateur 36+ Hunter Stake. Don Perignon, owned by Castlewood Farm and ridden by Barri Plant, earned the second place prize. The pair had a great show, also winning the Adult Amateur Hunter 18-35 Stake.

The win of the SEMF Children’s Hunter Classic went to Carriage Hill Farm’s Lavish, ridden by Jia Meininger. The pair also won the Taylor Harris Medal and the Children’s Hunter Stake 14 and under. Bismark, owned by Harriet Schiele and ridden by Marissa Damone, earned the red ribbon. The pair also won the Children’s Hunter 15-17 Handy and the Under Saddle.

The Southeast Medal Finals was a huge success with increased entries and interesting new classes and divisions.

“We plan on tweaking a few things,” said organizer Bob Bell. “But the core of the show is really going in the right direction. We want to thank all our competitors, parents, trainers and sponsors for another great Southeast Medal Finals. We look forward to next year!” Lala and Bell and his Classic Company created the show in 2012 and experienced 100 percent growth in its second year.

“I have been asked why we don’t make it a 3′ medal and not allow the 3’6″ kids to go in Phelps Media Group Junior Medal,” said Lala. “A novice rider that rides the same course as, perhaps, the winner of the Maclay Regionals is not only watching the more experienced rider, but they are executing the same course, the same track, at the same height.  They get to see the difference in the smoothness and the intricacies in the same course they ride. This format is a much more profound learning experience.

“We would love to see the Adult divisions grow,” continued Lala.  “I have some ideas, such as higher jumps, so when you’re done with your junior equitation horse you don’t necessarily have to get rid of him. The last junior year is not the end of riding. There is so much more to learn.”

The dates for next year’s show are: Sept. 18-21, 2014.

Barbara Ann Merryman Pilots El Paso to Victory in the Phelps Media Group Southeast Junior Medal

Barbara Ann Merryman and El Paso. Photos by Randi Muster.

Jacksonville, FL – September 21, 2013 – The third day of the 2013 Southeast Medal Finals was another busy day at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Highlights included the Children’s Adult Jumper Championship, the Phelps Media Group Junior Medal with an astounding number of entries in its second year – over 60 entries, and the Southeast Adult Medal Final.

For the second year in a row, Dr. Juan Gamboa and his incredible horse, Partizan, captured the lead of the World Cup format competition. Gamboa had much to celebrate as it was also the anniversary of his wedding to his wife, Jennifer.

Gamboa bested the tough competition by carrying only 2.5 faults throughout the three rounds. Round three was open to the top 15 riders in rounds one and two and included two trips around the course. Faults were added throughout the rounds. Barri Platt and Vicky were second with only 3.5 points out of the three rounds and Meghan Flanagan and Revelation were third, carrying only 5 points over the course of the three rounds.

“He’s a magician; he’s unbelievable,” said Gamboa. “He’s 23; he’s the oldest horse here and I am the oldest rider! He liked it; he enjoyed himself.”

To keep Partizan sound and happy, Gamboa says he gives him lots a love, good food and three months off in the summer. “Last time I showed him was in June. He was ready to come here. He knows his job. He wants to go clean and he wants to go fast. He’s a good boy.”

Gamboa trains with Daniel Geitner in Aiken, SC and Derek Peterson is schooling him here at Southeast Medal Finals. “I have a lot support. I cannot believe I beat all these kids!”

For the Southeast Adult Medal Finals, and the Phelps Media Group Junior Medal Finals, there was a panel of four judges, which included Tony Sgarlatti, Linda Andrisani, Jennifer Drahan and Molly Flaherty. The four judges scores were averaged for each round, then the two round scores were averaged to determine the final score.

For both classes, Allen Rheinheimer built a course that provided many options for the horse and rider pairs. There were opportunities to take an inside track and make tight rollbacks or to go around and for easier approaches. A forward five going away from the in gate kicked off the first round of both classes and required that a good pace be established to begin the course.

Ten riders competed in the Southeast Adult Medal first round. Four were asked to return for a second round. Lindsay Tomeu aboard Siboney Ranch’s Take Note earned an average score of 76.99, which landed the pair in second place. Samantha Senft and Whisper VDL, owned by Pursuit Farms LLC, scored a 69.16 for fourth place.  Audrey Gallagher and Alexander Worthington’s Romina 58 were third with a score of 75.66. Emily Jones piloted Califernia, owned by Donald Stewart, around the course, putting in a smooth and flawless performance earning them an average score of 78.33 and the victory gallop.

“I grew up with Jen (Miller) riding as a junior,” said Jones. “After I graduated college, I kind of stopped riding a little bit and have just been riding every now and then. I hadn’t ridden in six months until this week. We called Don (Stewart) and we said, ‘Don, we want to go to this horse show.’ So he said, ‘Sure, take this horse; he’s awesome.’ I rode him, took him, I’ve been practicing all week. Showed up and he has been amazing, to say the least. He is a good, good horse. He has taken good care of me and I have had a blast. I’m going to keep riding and showing as much as possible. Hopefully, one day I’ll get back to more consistently riding and showing.”

Bob Bell and James Lala added a new class that provided some good fun and comedic relief in between rounds of the Southeast Medal Finals – the Parent Lead Line Class.

Junior riders were encouraged to have a little fun and embarrass their parents for a good cause. All proceeds from the entry fees went to the show charity partner, Unbridled Warriors, equine assisted programs for military and first-responders.

“A member of our PR team, Mary Adelaide Brakenridge, came up with the concept,” said Lala. “We all loved the idea and ran with it. Everyone gathered around to watch the class. We laughed so hard we cried, especially when it came to awarding the creative categories. Don Stewart is such a great sport and his sense of humor is infectious!”

The Phelps Media Group SEMF Junior Medal had 63 entries, a significant increase over last year. Rheinheimer’s course provided the riders with options to showcase their strengths.  Twelve junior horse and rider combinations were asked back for the second round.

Meghan Flanagan and Thrift Shop
Meghan Flanagan and Thrift Shop

Meghan Flanagan, riding Fairfield Farm’s Thrift Shop, was the first rider to break the 80 mark in the second round, with an average score of 82.56. Her score would stand as the leader until Brett Burlington and Sunman had their second to last round. The pair scored an average score of 82.68 for their two rounds.

Then, last to go, Barbara Ann Merryman and Don Stewart’s El Paso edged Burlington out of the top spot with an average score of 85.68.

Merryman, who is studying at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, lives in the Baltimore area and trains with Kimberly Stewart. They contacted Don Stewart (no relation) to help them find a horse to ride in the Regionals on Sunday. They tried two horses.

“I rode El Paso and he was fabulous,” said Merryman.

“He’s young but he’s nice; he never looks at anything,” added Stewart.  “He just goes right around. I thought the courses were awesome. You had options but he has a big stride so we had a lot of choices we could make. Thank you to Don because he’s been a huge supporter with equitation horses.”

“And congratulations to Don for his win in the Lead Lines,” joked Merryman.

On Sunday the Southeast Medal Finals continues at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center with Children’s Hunters, Adult Hunters the SEMF Adult Hunter Classic and the highlight of the day, the highly-anticipated ASPCA Maclay Regionals.

Jordan Coyne and Cordovo Make It Look Easy Winning the $25,000 Land Rover Jacksonville Grand Prix

Jordan Coyne and Cordovo. Photos by Carrie Wirth.

Jacksonville, FL – September 20, 2013 – The second day of the 2013 Southeast Medal Finals at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center was action-packed from morning to evening with great show jumping competition. Highlights of the day included the $25,000 Land Rover Jacksonville Grand Prix, the final rounds of the Developing Sport Horse division, the EMO Championship and the $5,000 Junior Amateur Classic.

For the inaugural $25,000 Land Rover Jacksonville Grand Prix, Allen Rheinheimer built an impressive and technical course that challenged the horse and rider’s ability to jump and turn, lengthen and shorten. Of the 23 horse and rider combinations, only three progressed to the jump off round. First to go, Jordan Coyne and Cordovo were clean in the first round and earned the right to return for the jump-off. Coyne won the $5,000 Southeast Medal Finals Welcome Stake on Thursday night aboard her other mount, Lazaro.

Thirteen rounds later, Daniel Damen and Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Waters’ Quintus 66 were the second to leave all the jumps intact. Immediately following Damen’s round, Kaely Tomeu and Siboney Ranch’s Kalle also had a fault-free round.

Coyne was first in the order and first to go in the short course. Her round aboard the younger of her two horses was fast and clear. Neither Damen nor Tomeu could best her performance and she maintained the lead that earned her the victory gallop.

“He’s an eight-year-old and I got him when he was six,” said Coyne about Cordovo, whom her trainer Derek Peterson found in Germany. “He’s a Holsteiner by Contender. He was doing 1.20m when I got him and just kind of brought him up through the ranks and he’s been doing grand prix for a year now. He’s consistently clean. He just tries super hard every time. He’s just and awesome horse to have.”

“I went first and I thought it (the course) rode nice,” Coyne said. “It rode exactly how we walked all the lines – I thought they rode really well. Overall, I thought it was a great course.”

“I wanted to try to go fast,” she said about her jump-off round. “I think I could have been a little bit faster. Going clean – I put the pressure on the other two to go clean. So overall I think we did the plan. Great show! We appreciate Land Rover sponsoring.”

“It’s fun to have a horse that we’ve developed and he’s gone consistently clean in grand prix,” said Coyne’s trainer, Peterson. “He’s only 8. He jumped clean in several grand prix as a 7-year-old. He was bought as a sales project. It sure is fun to have one like this that comes along and does this. I’m so proud of Jordan. It wasn’t her type of horse to start with because she’s used to one that had a whole lot of motor dragging her around. Now this one – you’ve got to ride with some leg and she’s learned how to ride both now. It’s a big accomplishment to ride two opposite horses and do well on both of them.”

The final two classes of the Developing Sport Horse division kicked off the day’s competition in the indoor arena on Friday. The second and third rounds of the division were awarded to Carracci Blue, owned and ridden by Christina Kelly. The pair earned scores of 92 in the first class and 89 in the second; they did not compete in round one on Thursday.

Round one’s winner, Little Zegg and Silvio Mazzoni, earned second place with their score of 84 in the second class Little Zegg had a rail and ended up in third place. Tempting, owned by Loretta Patterson and ridden by Danielle Grice of Northfield, MN, earned second place.

The Developing Sport Horse division championship was determined by averaging the scores of the rounds. Temping and Danielle Grice earned the championship with and average score of 83.

“I think it is a great idea,” said Grice about the judged young jumper division. Grice is Holly Shepherd’s assistant trainer at Accolade Farm in Grand Bay, AL. “I would love to see the judges’ cards to see where the points came from. It’s good to know. That horse is from Argentina; he came out of the Henry Jota’s sale as a three-year-old; we bought him two years ago and he’s by Indoctro. He’s been really easy. He was second in all three rounds – just very consistent. He’s been a really fun horse to bring along.”

In the EMO Championship, 41 top junior riders competed over Rheinheimer’s winding 3’3″ course. The top twelve were asked back for the flat phase, then four of those riders were selected for more testing over fences. Claudia Billups and Warran, Ashley Foster and Leena L, Haley Waters and Quito and Molly Dinapoli and Vasco all returned for the final phase. The four riders were asked to canter two jumps, trot one, canter another, and halt without stirrups.

Haley Waters and Quito

Waters’ performance aboard Quito was smooth and stylish and earned her the win of the class.

“They really have to want to be equitation horses because it is a hard life,” said Haley’s mother, Dana Waters. “He is – no lunge- no practice. He was meant to do this in his life. Daniel Damen is who has been training Haley and I think that Haley is going to send him a thank you note for all the no stirrup work this summer.”

“I have had him since the end of last year,” said Waters, who is 17, in her senior year in high school and has one more year as a junior rider. “He’s such a good boy. He’s been great for me. He’s never done anything bad. He doesn’t need any prep at all. You just take him out of the stall and go. It’s so nice to have one that’s so brave at the jumps and so easy going for a class inside with jumper jumps. I think it’s great that they have a grand prix here now.”

For the $5,000 Junior Amateur Classic, Rheinhiemer built an impressive 1.35m course that and produced only a handful of clean rounds. In the end it was Ashley Foster aboard Indy who seized the first place prize.

“We bought him form Jason Berry about a year ago,” said 17-year-old Foster about her horse Indy. Foster traveled to SEMF from her home in Maryland. She trains with Bobby Braswell in the equitation. “I took him all last year and did the high juniors. He’s very fast.” This is Foster’s last year as a junior and she plans to go to Auburn to ride with the equestrian team.

Southeast Medal Finals returns on Saturday with three rings of more exciting show jumping. Highlights include the SEMF Hunter Classic, The SEMF Amateur Owner Classic, The final championship round of the Child/Adult Jumpers, the Phelps Media Group SEMF Junior Medal and the SEMF Adult Medal.

Darren Chiacchia Continues His Winning Ways in the Dressage Arena

Photos by Susan J. Stickle.

September 3, 2013 – Springville, NY – Darren Chiacchia and his black Trakehner stallion, Ballzauber, continued their unprecedented championship streak at the Western New York Dressage Association (WNYDA) Show in Houghton, NY and at the Maplewood Warmbloods Dressage Show in Middleton, NY over the past weeks.

“He’s just a winning machine,” stated Chiacchia of Ballzauber. “He’s all business when he is in the ring.” Along with his excellent show ring presence, Ballzauber is a “remarkable and very sweet horse.” Ballzauber has been victorious from Wellington, FL through KY Horse Park, and now in his home base of New York State. “We’ve shown under some top judges and I’m very pleased to score well under these tough officials,” Chiacchia said.

At the WNYDA Show, Ballzauber was overall Grand Champion of the Breeding Show and won the High Score Trakehner Award. Along the way, Ballzauber was 4-Year-Old and Older Breeding Stallion class winner as well as Champion in the Stallion and Mature Horse classes. Ballzauber is a 9-year-old Trakehner by Axis who is by the very influential EH Sixtus (half-brother to Windfall) out of Ballgefluster by EH Itaxerxes.

DChiacchia13MW3494With Schwarze Zauber (‘Black Magic’ in the German language), a three-year-old stallion by Zauberruf, Alayna Pastuck, Chiacchia’s barn manager and student, took the Champion Young Horse. Schwarze Zauber was overall Reserve Champion of the Breeding Show, just behind Ballzauber.

In the ridden portion of the WNYDA Show, Ballzauber was victorious in all six of his second and third level tests. This left Ballzauber, in addition to his previous honors, as Champion High Score of the show and High Score Trakehner both weekend days.

Pastuck was second in the three third level tests, finishing just behind Ballzauber. She achieved high enough scores to secure her U.S. Dressage Federation (USDF) Bronze Medal, a significant honor.

At the WNYDA Show, Chiacchia introduced two new junior students, Mackenzie Martin and Madison Seliskar. Both girls are 14 years old and come from Bay City, Michigan. In their first dressage show they took home ribbons from each class they entered, a remarkable feat. In total, Martin won three classes on her Trakehner gelding Fantastic (by Connery).

At the Maplewood Warmbloods Dressage Show, Chiacchia and Ballzauber won all six of their second and third level tests. Chiacchia’s student Martin shined by again winning three classes and achieving a score of over 70%.

DChiacchia13MW3522Chiacchia continues a steady recovery from his dramatic accident at the 2008 Red Hills International Horse Trials in Tallahassee, FL. With his resulting Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), he is steadily climbing back up the road to success. His amazing recovery has inspired many people. Chiacchia is a 2004 Olympic eventing bronze medalist, 2003 Pan American Games individual gold medal victor, and a winner of the prestigious Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI****.

Chiacchia is proud to be sponsored by Voltaire Design, Triple Crown Feeds, Der Dau Boots, Charles Owen Helmets, FarmVet.com, Spalding Fly Predators, Flair Equine Nasal Strips, Omega Alpha, EquiFit, Inc., Heritage Performance Riding Gloves, Cavalor, Back on Track, System Fencing, Renegade Trucks, and Kesmarc Equine Therapy.

ASPCA Maclay Regionals Features Top Young Juniors Riders across the Country

Region 2 Winner Michael Hughes.

Lexington, KY – September 20, 2013 – It was an exciting weekend for the top equitation riders as they competed in numerous ASPCA Maclay Regionals to vie for a spot in the coveted Finals at the Alltech National Horse Show.  The competition was stiff as the top junior riders went head-to-head in a battle of the best and the chance to take it all. In Region 2 the winning honors went to Michael Hughes, while Hunter Holloway took the Region 5 title. Kelli Cruciotti was presented with the Region 6 Championship, while Haley Stradling piloted her mount to the Region 7 top honors. Olivia Champ rode to the top of the ranks for Region 8.

The ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship class has been held since 1933, and it is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners are some of the biggest names in the equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr Howard (1972), and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992. The 2011 ASPCA winner was Sarah Milliren and Jacob Pope took the title during last year’s 2012 Alltech National Horse Show.

The top 61 competitors from Region 2 gathered at Old Salem Farm during the at 2013 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W to showcase their skills and qualify for the ASPCA Maclay Championships at the Alltech National Horse Show. After an over fences phase, a flat phase, and a test of the top four, it was Michael Hughes of Allendale, NJ, earning the win. Lillie Keenan was awarded the second place honors, while Victoria Colvin captured the third place position.

Region 5 Winner Hunter Holloway

The Region 5 Maclay Regionals were held last weekend during the St. Louis National Charity Horse Show in Lake Saint Louis, MO. It was Hunter Holloway who rode to the top of the class, earning the top score, and catching the judges’ scrutinizing eye for the second year in a row. Caroline Mcleese took the second place honors, while Taylor Sutton rode to the third place award.

The Colorado Spring Fall Classic welcomed competitors to Colorado Springs, CO, with a challenging equitation course and a contest that proved fierce for Region 6.  Kelli Cruciotti came out on top, rising to the challenge and leaving nothing to chance. Ruth Foley was awarded the red ribbon, while Alessandra Sozzi finished in third.

Haley Stradling piloted her mount to the Region 7 Championship during the Northwest Autumn Classic in Monroe, WA. She posted a fantastic round, securing the top spot. Kendall Pedigo was presented with the second place ribbon for her efforts, while last year’s victor Sara Nordstrom took the third place honors.

The West Coast 2013 ASPCA Maclay Regionals for Region 8 took center stage in the Blenheim Indoor at the Oaks Fall Classic held in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Thirty-four riders qualified for the event, but it was Olivia Champ who rode to the top of the ranks. Morgan Dickerson took the reserve championship, while third place was awarded to Shelby Drazan for her beautiful efforts throughout the class.

It was a fantastic start to the ASPCA Maclay Regionals. This upcoming weekend will see Regions 1, 3 and 4 getting underway. Region 1 will compete on Sunday, September 22, at the Fairfield Hunt Club and the Southeast Medal Finals will host Region 3. On Saturday, September 21, the Kentucky National tests the nation’s best from Region 4. The top qualified riders from each region will travel to the 130th Alltech National Horse Show held at the picturesque Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, for the ASPCA Maclay National Championships in November. Medal Mania Highlights Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals

©ESI Photography. Mary Mazzarella on course.

SAUGERTIES, NY (September 12, 2013) – The 2013 Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals wrapped at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York as the Children’s and Adult Medal Finals took the stage. The League Finalists gave onlookers a chance to preview the future of the sport as both the Marshall & Sterling League National Finals and the HITS Saugerties summer season came to a close.

Children’s Pony Medal Final – Small/Medium
Mary Mazzarella of Tolland, Connecticut made her last show on a pony count. She and her own Libby Lou Who rode to a win in the Children’s Pony Medal Final – Small/Medium and topped 42 fellow competitors. They impressed all onlookers posting a 92 in the first round and returning for a 78 and a total of 170 for the win. Mazzarella was also presented with the Best Junior Rider on a Pony award.

Mazzarella, who is in eighth grade at St. James School in Connecticut, rides with Martha and Armand Chenelle of Windcrest Farm. According to Martha, Mazzarella made a last minute decision to come to the finals and the trip paid off. “She works harder than any student I have ever had, and she deserved this win,” added Chenelle.

Kathryn Hall of New York, New York rode One Hot Pepper, owned by Joe Currais to second place and Hannah Clark of Oviedo, Florida piloted her own Wish Upon A Star to third. Fourth-place awards were presented to Sophee Steckbeck of Clarksburg, Virginia and her own Coconut Creek. Sophia Comi of Colchester, Virginia rounded out the top five with her own Sambuca.

Children’s Pony Medal Final – Large
According to Terry Gonzalez of TM Hills Farm, who trains Emily LoVece of Ocala, Florida, they have been working all year long in preparation for the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals. LoVece rode her own Medoc De Livre to the Children’s Pony Medal Final – Large win.

“She has worked hard, ridden without stirrups and prepared for this day,” said Gonzalez. “We love the atmosphere at this final – the ring and courses make these riders feel like they are in the grand prix and at some point many of them will be.”

Gonzalez and LoVece made the trip from Florida for the finals and will now begin preparing for the HITS Winter Circuit in Ocala.

Tiffany Falcone of Morganville, New Jersey jumped Olivia Thomas’ Johnny Rocket to second place and Caroline Carrara of Cornwall, Vermont rode Connie Sellman’s Sweet Treat to third. Cristyn Edwards of Villas, New Jersey was fourth with Pembrook Farm’s Gingersnap and Aurelie Guss of Old Brookville, New York capped with top five on Ross Kaplan’s Foxcry’s After Dark.

SmartPak Children’s Medal Final – Horse
Eighty-four competitors took to the Strongid C 2X Grand Prix Stadium during the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals for the SmartPak Children’s Medal Final for horses. Kennedy Knapic of Smithtown, New York, who trains with James Benedetto, rose to the top in the first round, riding her own Zedulon to an 84.

“When we walked course, James gave me a lot of strategy, so I was confident, but I just tried to stay focused and calm,” said Knapic who rode 66th in the original order.

Once the top twelve was decided, Knapic returned in second place and posted the high score of the second round with an 89 for a total score of 172. Margaret Munz of Long Valley New Jersey posted a two-round total of 171 with Alexandra Walsh’s Eur-Honor and the two were asked to test on the flat to determine the winner. Knapic returned to the ring for a third time and her performance on the flat guaranteed her the win and contributed to her being named the Best Junior Rider on a horse during the finals.

“She’s a hard worker and really kept her cool under pressure today,” said Benedetto. “She watched the first 20 ride and then I sent her back to the barn to focus. The best riders definitely rose to the top today.”

This was Knapic’s second appearance in the finals and she admits that she loves the pressure. “It got really close at the end, but I loved every minute of it.”

After three round of heated competition, Munz and Eur-Honor were second, while Shannon Eckel of Rockaway, New Jersey rode to third on her own Bugattie. Page Soper of Southport, Connecticut was fourth with her own They Say and Danelle Moraski of new Hampton, New York capped the top five with her own Island Paradise.

Adult Medal Final
Audrey Gallagher of Richmond, Virginia won the Adult Medal Final with Alexandra Worthington’s Romina 58. Out of 45 competitors, Gallagher scored the highest in the first round with a 90 and combined it with and 87 in the second for a total of 177 and the win.

“The course asked a lot of questions. You had to collect, go forward and see striding,” said Gallagher. “I was really happy with my first trip and even happier with my second.”

When she isn’t riding, Gallagher attends the University of Georgia as a sophomore and rides on their equestrian team. She trains with Don Stewart and Kristi Smith, but was under the direction of Mark Jungherr for the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League National Finals.

Lauren Muller of Bradenton, Florida was second on Lisa Beebe’s Love and honor, while Jennifer Dorfman of Brooklyn, New York rode her own Sampson to third. Fourth went to Cori Reich of Ivyland, Pennsylvania and Lori Reich’s Gentleman’s Way. Tracy LaManna of Ramsey, New Jersey rounded out the top five on On Point Farm, LLC’s Match Point.

Grand Hunter Champion
At the conclusion of the hunter divisions over the weekend, the Grand Hunter Champion Award was presented to two of the most successful hunters and their riders. Lena Reeb of Weston, Connecticut and Jamie Ringel’s Private Ryan, as well as Rob Burroughs of Pompton Plains, New Jersey aboard Tricia Flood’s Spellbound took home the honor. Both pairs championed in the HITS Working Hunter divisions earlier in the week, Reeb in the non-professional and Burroughs in the professional.

Year-End Award Winners Honored
As the Marshall & Sterling League celebrated its 23rd year of competition, the League’s National Finals put an end to the qualifying season naming year-end award winners at the annual awards banquet. The banquet was hosted at the popular Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern in Saugerties, New York. Perfect Products, a supporting sponsor of the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League presented each top ten awards winner with a $125 gift certificate as a reward to a season of hard work and dedication to the sport.

Jordan Coyne and Lazaro Carve Speedy Turns to Win Southeast Medal Finals $5,000 Welcome Stake

Jordan Coyne and Lazaro. Photos by Randi Muster.

Jacksonville, FL – September 19, 2013 – Southeast Medal Finals got underway with entries doubled over last year’s attendance. The Jacksonville Equestrian Center was abuzz with activity, with equitation and jumper classes featured in the indoor arena.

For the Southeast Medal Finals $5,000 Welcome Stake, 26 horse and rider combinations tried their hand at course designer Allen Rheinheimer’s course. Ten completed the course with faultless rounds to return for the jump-off.

First in the order, Daniel Damen and Quintus 66, owned by Chuck Waters, had a clear opening round and progressed to the short course. He finished clean with a time of 30.659, establishing the time to beat. Then, Kaely Tomeu and Kalle, owned by Siboney Ranch, also left all the rails in their cups in the jump-off round and broke the beam at 30.858. The effort would eventually earn the pair fifth place.

Jordan Coyne and her own Lazaro produced the next faultless first round. Coyne and her big Belgian Warmblood Lazaro sped through the short track, made tidy inside turns and saved time throughout the course, laying down a time of 27.692.

Silvio Mazzoni and Terra Honero, owned by Jessie Mazzoni, were the next to progress to the jump-off round. The pair successfully performed inside turns, were fast, but not fast enough to beat Coyne and Lazaro. Mazzoni completed the jump-off in 27.94.

Liza Finsness and her second mount in the class, Ormsby Hill, and Christy Israel and Cracky Z both were double clear but posted jump-off times of 32.674 and 34.134 respectively, eventually earning them sixth and seventh place.

Coyne returned on a second mount, Cordovo, and attempted to beat her own time. The duo was clean, but came in at 28.898 putting them behind Mazzoni in third. Coyne and Lazaro’s time would stand as the speediest and the pair captured the win.

“Lazaro is 13. I’ve had him for six years and he is the best horse I could ever ask for,” said Coyne, a 22-year-old from New Port Richey, FL, who has trained with Derek Peterson since she was about 15.  “He wants to win. He knows his job and he knows when he goes in the ring that it’s time to work and he’s all business. It doesn’t matter if you’re in an indoor or out in a big field; he jumps the same every time.”

“I think this is a great show,” she said. “I rode in this ring several years ago. I think this is a great facility and I’m really excited that there’s a show here because it is close to home.”

The Developing Sport Horse division, presented by Team Rakowsky, kicked off today. The first class of 4- and 5-year-olds competed over a 1.10m and 1.15m course. The division was inspired by European-style classes in which young jumpers are judged on their athletic potential.  Horses are judged on style, presentation, rideability and their potential to represent the United States in future international competitions.

For scoring, all horses start with 60 points. The judges and course designer determined the course’s optimal time with a time allowance of 8 seconds below and above the optimal time.

Then, the judges awarded 1-10 points for style – jumping technique, presentation – fitness, condition and expression, rideability – smoothness, leads and appropriate striding.

Then points are taken away for faults: 5 points per knock down, 20 points for a refusal and 2 points for each second above and below the time allotment.

Little Zegg and Silvio Mazzoni
Little Zegg and Silvio Mazzoni

In the first leg of the division, Little Zegg, a Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Jessie Mazzoni and ridden by Silvio Mazzoni, was awarded 88 points from the judges to win the class.

“She belongs to my wife, but I am riding her,” said Silvio Mazzoni whose wife, Jessie Mazzoni, is pregnant. The Mazzonis hail from Reddick, FL. “We owned her mother, Zegg, who was by Indoctro and this mare’s sire is Coconut Grove. I think the Developing Sport Horse division is a really good idea. I don’t want to ride my young horses in a speed class. This is so much better for bringing them along.”

Additional horse and rider pairs had the opportunity to qualify for the Phelps Media Group Junior Medal Finals and the Southeast Adult Medal Finals. Molly Dinapoli earned the blue ribbon aboard Vasco, owned by Michael Kirby. Meghan Flanagan and Fairfield Farm’s Let’s Dance were second and Bailey Brasington was third aboard William, owned by Donald Stewart. All three train with Bibby Hill and Don Stewart. Emily Jones and Don Stewart’s Califernia and Megan Sullivan and Tanks a Million were first and second in the Adult qualifier.

Southeast Medal Finals returns on Friday with more show jumping action including the final two classes of the Developing Sport Horse division in the morning, jumper and equitation classes in the indoor arena and hunters in Ring 1. The not-to-be-missed highlight Friday evening will be the $25,000 Land Rover Jacksonville Grand Prix.

Friday Is Barns’ Night Out at the Alltech National Horse Show

Jacob Pope (pictured with Uno), of Columbia, MD, won the 2012 ASPCA Maclay National Championships.

[LEXINGTON, Ky.] – Horse-crazy kids will put the horses out to pasture and pull on their party boots for Alltech’s Barn Night in the Bluegrass, presented by Group C, at the Alltech National Horse Show. During this barn bazaar on Friday, Nov. 1, youth from around the region are invited to meet with all-star equestrians and show true “barn spirit” for a chance to win prizes in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Open to young riders, equestrian groups and kids who simply love horses, Barn Night in the Bluegrass encourages youth to make banners, dress in horse gear and wear their barn’s logo to participate in spirit competitions held during the evening’s events. Spirit prizes awarded to Barn Night participants throughout the night will include year-long subscriptions to Sidelines magazine, official merchandise of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy, a year’s supply of LIFEFORCE Elite natural digestive supplement and a Lyons Farm barn grill-out package sponsored by Alltech. The most spirited barn or equestrian group will win a golf cart for their facility. One super-spirited Barn Night participant will win a trip for four to attend the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy, France.

Barn Night in the Bluegrass participants will be grouped in a premier seating section of the Alltech Arena while world-class equestrians aim for record heights during Friday’s LIFEFORCE Elite Puissance competition. All Barn Night participants will receive a complimentary gift bag supported by Sidelines magazine and the Kentucky Horse Council. When the class has ended, youth will be invited into the ring for autographs and pictures with elite equestrians competing at the Alltech National Horse Show.

In addition to the equestrian action, Barn Night youth and their families can enjoy activities that are part of Alltech’s first-ever Kentucky Gathering, including novelty shopping venues, a showcase of local foods and craft brews, and a photo opportunity with the new Alltech National Horse Show mascot. Local band Girls Guns and Glory will amp up the spirit with live music throughout Barn Night.

Alltech’s Barn Night in the Bluegrass is presented by Group C with support from Sidelines magazine and the Kentucky Horse Council. In the weeks leading up to the Alltech National Horse Show, Alltech representatives will visit local equestrian groups to drop off a “Barn Bucket” containing a set of free tickets to Friday night of the Alltech National Horse Show. If your equestrian group or facility would like to request a “Barn Bucket,” please contact Chelsea Magee at cmagee@alltech.com.

Registration for Barn Night is free and required for participants to be eligible for prizes. To register, e-mail the names of participants and their equestrian facility of affiliation, if applicable, to Chelsea Magee at cmagee@alltech.com. Registration is also available at www.alltechnationalhorseshow.com/event-information/barn-night-in-the-bluegrass/.

Kentuckians will gather this fall to celebrate three proud traditions deeply rooted in the Bluegrass state – horses, heritage and hops. Alltech will host the first-ever Kentucky Gathering, Oct. 29-Nov.3, at the Alltech Arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park. This week-long festival includes the world-class equestrian sport of the Alltech National Horse Show, the Biggest Loser 5k RunWalk, a Taste Kentucky showcase featuring locally crafted brews and foods, and many other fun-filled activities for the entire family.

An American equestrian tradition, the Alltech National Horse Show, Oct. 29-Nov.3, has reached its stride in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. Reserved for the year’s top talent on the North American show circuit, the Alltech National Horse Show opens the ring to a variety of equestrian classes and disciplines, with events including the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix, the $50,000 LIFEFORCE Elite Puissance and the ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Finals for youth competitors. For more information, visit www.alltechnationalhorseshow.com.

The 2013 Alltech National Horse Show takes center stage on October 29 – November 3, 2013, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Founded in 1883 at the original Madison Square Garden, the National Horse Show is America’s oldest indoor horse show, firmly established as a major fixture on the national and international sports and social event calendars. The National Horse Show Association’s primary activity is the annual production of the National Horse Show and all ancillary events.
