Heartbreaking images of horses frantic from the dense smoke of massive raging wildfires filled our screens. As horse lovers and horse protectors, this is our worst nightmare – horses that are terrified, confused, and unable to find their way home.
“With limited funds available, many of our EQUUS Foundation Guardian charities must choose critical essentials like food, farrier care, and vet care over microchipping,” said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President. “With your help, we can make sure that these horses will find their way home after disaster strikes and help alleviate the fear felt by the organizations entrusted with their care.”
The EQUUS Foundation is raising $50,000 to microchip 1,000 horses. Just $50* covers the cost of the purchase of one chip and the implantation by a veterinarian. Microchipping is regarded as a humane, ethical, and reliable form of identification. While the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) now requires all competition horses to be microchipped, less than 20% of the horses at equine charities across the United States are microchipped.

On Sept. 16, 2019, Samantha Marie Pritchard Calzone passed away doing what she loved most in this life: riding horses.
“We have established the Samantha Calzone Memorial Horse Whisperer Award in memory of Samantha Calzone as an everlasting tribute to her life and to her passion for horses and as an inspiration to future generations of horsemen and horsewomen,” said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President. “We lost Samantha, a passionate and dedicated horsewoman, too soon.”
Samantha is deeply loved and greatly missed by her mother Ruthann Pritchard, father Peter Calzone, older sister Brittany Calzone, grandparents Jean and Rocco Calzone, family members James Holodak, Jr. and Kathy Palmer, boyfriend Michael Iranpour, countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and wonderful friends.

ABOUT SAMANTHA CALZONE: Samantha was born in Redding, Connecticut, where her passion for horses bloomed throughout elementary and middle school. In 2014, Samantha was accepted into the Animal Science program at University of Connecticut and, of course, joined their equestrian team. She was elected and served as Captain for two years and was adored as a kind, talented mentor for her teammates. Samantha also volunteered two of her spring breaks in Mississippi and Florida, where she helped with hurricane relief projects. Samantha graduated magna cum laude from UConn in June 2018. Ever chasing her passion, Samantha then enrolled at Hartpury University in England to complete her Masters Degree in Equine Science with a focus on rehabilitation. She had just returned stateside in July of 2019 and was happy to be reunited with her family and boyfriend Michael. Samantha was quickly hired by Takoda Farm and it was there, pursuing her passion, that a horse reared and fell on top of her. She did not suffer.

Wellington, Fla. – Feb. 10, 2019 – The Chesapeake International Draft Horse Show concluded Sunday, February 10 with an exciting finish to the weekend on a beautiful day in Wellington. The afternoon, which benefited the EQUUS Foundation, exhibited two classes, the Eight-Horse Hitch and the Unicorn Class. Held at Crab Orchard Equestrian Estate, generously donated by Frank and Monica McCourt, crowds drew to see the gentle giants up close and cheer them on.
For each class, spectators watched in amazement as the gentle giants entered the arena. The two judges, Bob Shanahan of Ohio and Alan Freitag of Virginia, lined up in the middle of the ring to watch the team tests. The class consisted of teams completing three laps around the ring at the trot before changing direction across the diagonal. Trotting across the diagonal gives the drivers a chance to showcase their team’s skills individually to the judging panel. All hitches were then asked to demonstrate the natural gait, the walk, and the trot in the opposite direction to show the horses’ ability to work in unison under control. After being asked to line up in the center of the ring, the judges took a final look at the hitches’ presentations, while also asking for a demonstration the reverse gait. The final team scores were based on their ability to work together, head carriage, consistency, and the overall presentation of the hitch and driver.
The first class of the featured was the Eight-Horse Hitch, which showed crowds mass amounts of power paired with the agility of the draft breeds. Drivers kept precise control of each team of horses as they showed off for the judges. Horses were beautifully turned out, their manes braided and tack shining as they trotted around the arena. The Eight-Horse Hitch welcomed the draft breeds of Clydesdale, Percheron, and Belgian to go head-to-head in competition. The judges awarded first place to Express Ranches from Yukon, Oklahoma with their driver Josh Minshull. Second place went to Blue Ribbon Farm, based in Farmington, Missouri. In third was Zubrod Percherons from Guthrie, Oklahoma.
During the break, spectators got a chance to get up close and personal with Teddy, a rescue miniature pony that the EQUUS Foundation helped to rehome. Now owned by Georgina Bloomberg, Teddy is a prime example of the exceptional work that the EQUUS Foundation does. Also joining the EQUUS Foundation representatives were Jessica Springsteen and Clementine Goutal, who are both advocates for the foundation. The girls were treated to a ride in the hitches during the Unicorn class, getting a firsthand glimpse of what it is like to compete in the sport.
The final class of the weekend was the Unicorn class. As special as its name, the Unicorn class sees two horses in the back and one up front. Entering the class were 12 teams, all of them using their best horses as this class can be more challenging. Due to its unique structure, it is important that the horse in the front stays in the middle track and doesn’t sway side to side. This horse has to be well trained and confident to pull the cart forward on its own. Shining above the rest in this class were the Zubrod Percherons from Guthrie, Oklahoma, driven by Chad Zubrod. In second place was Express Ranches from Yukon, Oklahoma and rounding out the top three was Blue Ribbon Farm from Farmington, Missouri.
The Chesapeake International Draft Horse Show was lovingly founded by Victoria McCullough. Praised by crowds, friends, and competitors, the show celebrated its inaugural year with great turnout and tough competition. Benefiting two charities close to McCullough and her work in the equestrian town of Wellington, the Chesapeake International Draft Horse Show is proud to support the EQUUS Foundation and the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches.

Beezie Madden will be competing as captain of Team Ariat in the Best Performance Team Invitational at the EQUUS Foundation’s fête cheval étoile on Friday, February 26 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida.
Judged this year by Tim Kees and Frank Madden, with live commentary by Don Stewart and Jimmy Torano, the Best Performance Team Invitational tests the abilities of the teams of show jumping riders to effectively compete over a 1.35m course based on style, function and execution.
Madden rose to the top in 2015 claiming the title of Best Individual Performance with a score of 99 out of 100 on Lilly Higgins’ Zinnia.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) Klinger Perpetual Award for Honor & Service, presented by Ariat International and the EQUUS Foundation. The award recognizes a horse, individual, or organization that best demonstrates the values of honor and service as embodied by Klinger, a special horse who has touched the lives of many in his life of service with the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Platoon.
The 2015 Klinger Award recipient will be recognized during a presentation at center ring with Klinger and representatives of the Caisson Platoon, WIHS, Ariat International and EQUUS Foundation on Friday, October 23, 2015, during the annual WIHS Military Night. The recipient will receive a prize courtesy of Ariat International and will have the opportunity to select an equine charity on EQUUS Foundation’s Equine Welfare Network to receive a $1,000 grant.
“We are grateful to the Washington International Horse Show, one of the oldest and most prestigious equestrian sporting events in the United States, and Ariat International, for the opportunity to nationally recognize the positive impact of horses in our lives,” said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President.

Klinger performs solemn duties at The Old Guard as a funeral escort bringing departed military members to their final resting spot at Arlington National Cemetery, serves as the official escort to the President of the United States and has led the Presidential Inaugural Parade.
Beyond his official duties, Klinger brings comfort to veterans and families of our fallen heroes in his role as a Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) Ambassador and he has been an important part of WIHS for many years ñ visiting with children on WIHS Kids’ Day and participating in the Caisson Platoon Exhibition on WIHS Military Night, so it is both fitting and a great honor that WIHS should salute him through this special award program.

Three deserving equine charities were selected by random draw as the winners of the 2015 Win A Grant program thanks to the dedication of three volunteers and Ariat International, the sponsor of the EQUUS Foundation Champions volunteer program.
Individuals who volunteer a minimum of 24 hours in a year for an equine charity on the EQUUS Foundation Equine Welfare Network are recognized as Champions and automatically entered into a drawing where the winners have the opportunity to select their charities to receive an EQUUS Foundation grant. Out Side In & Champion Janet Jacobs

Established in 2010 as an Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) facility serving a handful of children with borrowed horses, Out Side In today provides over 120 hours of therapy each month to families throughout West Michigan, including veterans, and is home to 16 rescued “off the track” thoroughbreds, which are retrained by volunteers and repurposed into new lives as cherished therapy partners.
Out Side In specializes in therapy services for those suffering from the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), sexual abuse and domestic violence and is widely known as the facility-of-choice for treatment resistant individuals who have unsuccessfully sought other methods of dealing with their mental or emotional concerns.
Over 25 volunteers assist with the day-to-day operations and horse care. Among them is Janet Jacobs, who, at age 60, yearning to return to her life-long passion for horses and their welfare, discovered Out Side In. Not only does she assist with day-to-day operations, but as Director of Philanthropy and Volunteer Services at Mercy Health in Muskegon, Jan uses her professional skills as the charity’s president. She successfully led the effort to launch “Bringing the Out Side In”, a capital campaign to build a larger indoor arena to house their at-capacity therapy programs and their many equine friends. Ground breaking for the new facility is scheduled for this September.
“I have always been kidded about being a rescuer,” Jan says, “but I could not be more personally fulfilled by helping to transition horses from their lives at the race track to their new lives as therapy horses, and in turn, helping those who are struggling to find hope and healing. What a wonderful way to pay it forward.”

Established in 2011, Any has been a key volunteer since the first year and “Mom” to its first Therapy Horse, Ruby (UC Broadway Show).
Signature programs at Horses Healing Humans are W.I.T.’s End (Women in Transition) and Equine Services for Heroes (US Veterans/Wounded Warriors) as well as traditional TR, EFP and EAL programs for children and adults.
“Life circumstances brought horses back into my life after a very long hiatus. Horses are just so very good for the soul. It feels like I am reliving my childhood. I can’t imagine a better way to spend my free time,” said Any.

“I believe ‘everything happens for a reason'”, said Laura Dustin. In April 2012, as Laura prepared to retire after 27 years as a physics and chemistry teacher, she read a story in the Sunday paper about Equicenter. My friend laughed when I mentioned the story to her. She was a volunteer there. Before I knew it, she had me in their barn, and I have been a volunteer ever since.”
Founded in 2005, EquiCenter, a PATH International Premier Accredited Center, strives to foster the personal growth and individual achievement of people with disabilities, at-risk youth, veterans, and their families using a wide range of therapeutic equestrian programs.

Laura had never really worked with horses, but, she said, “the staff taught me so much about caring for these special, patient animals, and they continue to help me learn how best to work with both rider and horse.”
“I could not have asked for a better retirement. I am often asked, ‘how did I fall in love with the EquiCenter?’ How could I not? In every lesson I see amazing interactions between people and horses – and there is nothing like seeing a rider’s great big smile or watching them hug their horse.”
“What better reason could there be for volunteering? Except maybe more smiles, hugs, and more horse kisses all around.”

Equine programs, degrees and options are as unique and diverse as breeds of horses. Finding the “right” college and equine program can be challenging. The EQUUS Foundation just made it easier with the launch of its Equine Education Network (EEN).
The EEN is a free online resource designed to connect individuals interested in pursuing studies and/or careers in the equine industry to the educational institutions with the curricula they seek.
The EEN is unique in that it specifically identifies the equine-related program(s) that the educational institution offers and provides a direct link to the program if available. Using the EEN eliminates precious time, often hours, identifying the institutions and then searching through an institution’s website to find the programs of interest.
What is also unique about the EEN is the partnership the EQUUS Foundation established with The Right Program for U, an educational consulting firm that specializes in the fields of equine higher education, equine welfare, and equine policy.
“The launch of the Equine Education Network to encourage the pursuit of equine-related careers is part of our ongoing commitment to horse welfare,” said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President. “The Right Program for U has the professional expertise to ensure that the Equine Education Network stays accurate and offers services for individuals who need additional assistance in matching their equestrian interests with college options and degree offerings.”
