Jonathan Paget Wins Badminton Horse Trials, Holds Off Rolex Grand Slam Challengers Fox-Pitt & Nicholson

Jonathan Paget riding Clifton Promise.

(Badminton, UK, 6 May 2013) Jonathan Paget (NZL), riding Clifton Promise, finished on his dressage score of 39.7 to beat Michael Jung (GER) riding La Biosthetique in 2nd place. Paget also held off the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing challenges from Andrew Nicholson (NZL) riding Nereo in 3rd place, and William Fox-Pitt (GBR) riding Parklane Hawk, who finished in 5th place. Sandra Auffarth (GER) riding Opgun Louvo finished in 4th place.

Rider Quotes

Jonathan Paget riding Clifton Promise

Q.  Congratulations – how are you feeling?

I’ve spent time with Michael and he is such a perfectionist. When he gets to the last fence you would never expect him to have it down and I heard the crowd cheer and I thought he’s a champion – he deserves it. And then I heard the “arrghh” and I thought “shoot, I think I’ve just won!”

Q. Your first four star – not a bad place to win it?

Yeah, and it’s the first time the horse has finished on his dressage score at a three day event. He’s always been the type of horse that pulls something amazing out when you need him the most and that’s what he did.

Q. What were you telling yourself as you were going into the ring?

Not much!  I went in and the only thing I had to remember was to salute and I just jumped one fence at a time.

Q. How did the round feel – it looked really fluid and easy – was it easy?

I don’t think it ever feels easy with the pressure, but he was amazing – he was jumping everything as hard as he could like he does and he never made a mistake – he was perfect.

Michael Jung riding Sam

Q. Michael, so close and so unlucky?

I could have been a little more controlled, but he jumped well and I am very happy about my first time here.

Q. How much of a disappointment to have last fence down?

Maybe I was a little bit too fast. He was really fresh; each fence was a lot of power. I had a good line to the last fence.

The whole week has been fantastic, I am very lucky to be here and very happy to finish in second place.

Q. Will you come back next year and have another go?

Maybe!  I would like to come to Burghley in September.

Andrew Nicholson riding Nereo

Q. Andrew, well done, great round, thoughts on the winner [Jonathan Paget]?

He’s a great boy – a great rider. It’s great for New Zealand to have someone like Joch in the wings here. It’s good for the likes of me and Mark who are getting on a bit to have ones like him from our country making us very alert and very focused.

Q. So for you there must be a little bit of disappointment and coming back again next year?

Yeah, it’s not the first time. I’ll be back again. I’m very happy with my horse’s performances.  I just think it has been great for the whole sport all week – I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the ‘razzamatazz’ and the buzz of it all and I was just pleased that I could play my part until the end.

It would have been nice to win the $350,000 but I didn’t have it to start with, so I haven’t lost it have I!  Perhaps I’ll try and win Burghley and get the ball rolling again!

William Fox-Pitt riding Parklane Hawk

Q. William, that was very bad luck; how are you feeling?

Luck wasn’t quite on our side but he has performed so well all week with a reasonable amount of pressure from both me and externally – horses can only pick up on that a little bit and he has responded so well and to come out and perform like that is exciting and rewarding.

Q. Does it make you feel slightly better to know you couldn’t have won the Rolex Grand Slam anyway with Jonathan winning?

Yes, of course it does, definitely!  I couldn’t have won Badminton and the Rolex Grand Slam, with the two going together, but finishing fifth is great.  It is a big relief – it will be nice to return to life as normal – with the phone not ringing all the time and people wanting interviews!

It has been an exciting experience and I am very fortunate to have been able to enjoy it and hope it has done a lot for the sport and a lot for Rolex and a lot for Badminton.

Q. But it [Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing] can all start again in September at Burghley?

Yes, but if it starts again at Burghley then it will finish again here at Badminton – let’s not even talk about anything!  Let’s hope that Rolex carry on – there’s no guarantees – I hope that they continue their massive involvement with the sport, which has done so much to boost the sport.

Final Competition Results after Show Jumping

1 Jonathan Paget/Clifton Promise (NZL) 39.7

Two Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing Contenders

With two of three successive wins of the Rolex Grand Slam – the 2012 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event and the 2011 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials – William Fox-Pitt is the current live contender of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. Due to adverse weather conditions, the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials was unfortunately cancelled. Therefore, Fox-Pitt has had to wait until the 2013 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials before he can contend for the coveted US$ 350,000 Rolex Grand Slam Prize.

However, now that Andrew Nicholson, who won the 2012 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials has also accomplished the feat of successively winning the 2013 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, there are now uniquely be two live contenders for the sport’s most coveted prize at the 2013 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing

In 2001, Rolex created the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. This trophy is awarded to the rider who manages to win the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials event in any consecutive order. Until now, only British rider Pippa Funnell has managed this staggering achievement, winning the title in 2003.

Three Greatest Equestrian Shows Combine to Create €1M Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping

26 April 2013 – Gothenburg, Sweden – Three of the world’s greatest equestrian shows – the CHIO Aachen, the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament and CHI Geneva – have joined forces to create the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping; the first global initiative to reward the outstanding rider who wins the Grand Prix at each show in succession. The winner of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping will be rewarded with a €1 million bonus prize.

Each of the three prestigious and historic equestrian shows in the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping has a long tradition of sporting excellence.

This joint creation by the three shows has been devised as a means to set the ultimate equestrian challenge; as a long-term partner to Aachen, Spruce Meadows and Geneva, Rolex quickly appreciated the significance of the Grand Slam and is honoured to become the exclusive partner.

Eric Lamaze, the only rider to have won the Grand Prix at each of the three shows on the same horse, said: “There are many great events on the Show Jumping calendar, but the three Grands Prix that comprise the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping are without doubt the ones which the riders all want to win during their careers.

Winning even one leg of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping is an incredible and career-changing achievement; to win all three in a 12-month period would create a legend of the sport overnight.”

Commenting on the title sponsorship, Arnaud Boetsch, Communication & Image Director of Rolex SA, said: “Throughout our history, Rolex has been driven by tradition and excellence, so when the three shows approached us with the idea of the Grand Slam of Show Jumping, we quickly appreciated its global resonance and degree of difficulty, which would make it achievable by only the very best horse-and rider partnerships. As a long-term partner of these three shows, we were delighted to add our support to create the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping.”

Michael Mronz, President of the Steering Committee of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping for 2013, said: “The three shows that comprise the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping not only have a natural synergy, but also a mutual respect for each other’s remarkable achievements and history. The collective desire and vision of all three shows to combine and form a pioneering concept such as the Grand Slam of Show Jumping seemed like the natural thing to do.

“Due to their long-standing commitment to equestrian sport, Rolex was at the forefront of all three shows’ minds as a potential partner to the Grand Slam of Show Jumping, and we were all delighted when they accepted our invitation to develop it.”

The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping will become the riders’ ultimate achievement, setting a new standard for the sport worldwide.

Three Historic Shows United

CHIO Aachen

The German show can trace its history back to 1898 when local people from the Aachen region came together to form the “Laurensberger Rennverein”, its main aim to organise horse races that would bring entertainment to the people of Aachen. It was in the 1920s that the show moved to its current location, the show grounds of Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein. Since this time, CHIO Aachen has grown into an internationally recognised event with riders, horses and spectators travelling to the show from around the globe.

More recently in 2005, the Aachen show grounds were completely renovated for the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games, which saw the capacity of the Jumping stadium increased to 40,000. The show and city itself is now very much known throughout the world as the capital of equestrian. Rolex has been a partner to the show since 1999.

CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’

Based in Calgary, Canada, Spruce Meadows is the brainchild of the Southern family who built a Show Jumping complex at the foothills of the Alberta Rocky Mountains in the early 1970s. It was in 1976 that the first Spruce Tournaments were held, with annual spectator attendances reaching over 50,000 by the end of the decade.

Today, Spruce Meadows boasts one of the greatest outdoor equestrian venues in the world and is a true favourite with rider and horse alike. Rolex began its association with Spruce Meadows in 1989.

CHI Geneva

Established in 1926, the first show featured 85 riders and 158 horses; a year later in 1927 the show joined the FEI Nations Cup circuit; and in 1979 CHI Geneva became part of the FEI World Cup Jumping series. CHI Geneva has been chosen to host nine of the 12 IJRC Top 10 Finals to date, and has won L’Année Hippique’s award for the best indoor show five times.

In 1991 the show moved to its current home, the Palexpo, which is the world’s largest indoor equestrian arena, drawing in larger crowds year on year. A decade later and the show played host to the first ever Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final, which is still held at the CHI Geneva today. Rolex has been a partner to the show since 1996.

Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping – The Rules

The rules of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping are simple: any rider that wins the Grand Prix at each of the three shows consecutively will receive €1m on top of the prize-money for each show’s Grand Prix. Moreover, any rider that wins two out of the three shows’ Grands Prix will also receive a bonus.

If the Grands Prix at two shows are won in succession, the bonus will be €500,000. If a rider is successful in qualifying for the “two out of three mode”, but doesn’t claim the victories at two consecutive shows’ Grands Prix, the bonus will be €250,000. It is only the rider that counts, not the horse i.e. it is possible to claim the bonus riding different horses. This system is infinite; it is not limited to a calendar year.

Three wins in a row                                                                                 →               €1,000,000
Two wins in a row                                                                                   →               €500,000
Two wins out of three (not consecutively)                                →               €250,000

Past Winners

The Grand Prix class at CHIO Aachen, the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament and CHI Geneva has never been won consecutively by the same rider over a 12-month period. However, three riders have won all three competitions, notably Eric Lamaze (CAN), Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) and Ludger Beerbaum (GER).

Eric Lamaze
Aachen – 2010 (Hickstead)
Spruce Meadows – 2011 (Hickstead); 2007 (Hickstead)
Geneva – 2008 (Hickstead)

Rodrigo Pessoa

Spruce Meadows – 2001 (Gandini Lianos); 2000 (Gandini Lianos)

Horse & Country TV Announces Extensive Badminton Line-up for 2013

12 April 2013 – Specialist equestrian channel Horse & Country TV (Sky Channel 280) today announced full details of its coverage of this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. This will include preview and highlights shows, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes content from Badminton through Rudall’s Round-Up and the all-new Badminton: A Rider’s View.

Premiering on Monday 29 April 2013 at 2100hrs (BST), Horse & Country TV will show a special Badminton Preview programme focusing on three of the world’s greatest event riders: Michael Jung (GER), William Fox-Pitt (GBR), and Andrew Nicholson (NZL). Jung is the reigning Olympic, World and European champion. Notwithstanding his extraordinary record, 2013 will be Michael’s first-ever appearance at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. Fox-Pitt has five horses to choose from in his attempt to claim the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing accolade, by adding the 2013 Mitsubishi Motors title to his wins at the 2011 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and the 2012 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. Andrew Nicholson, the man with by far the most Badminton completions to his name, but without a win, was on a roll at the end of 2012 with victories at the HSBC FEI Classics at Burghley and Pau.

From 12 April 2013 onwards visitors to Horse & Country TV’s website (www.horseandcountry.tv) will be able to see a 15-minute Course Walk with Event Director and course designer, Hugh Thomas, who will be accompanied by Beijing 2008 bronze medallist, Daisy Berkeley. Thomas has said that the Cross-Country course will be similar to the one prepared for last year’s cancelled show; however, a few tweaks have been incorporated.

At the event itself the Horse & Country TV team will be present throughout, filming a Rudall’s Round-Up special to be premiered on 13 May 2013 at 2030hrs (BST). As ever, presenter Jenny Rudall will be taking the audience behind the scenes and interviewing the riders and personalities who help make Badminton such a landmark in the equestrian calendar.

On 16 May 2013 at 2000hrs (BST) Horse & Country TV will premiere a one-hour Badminton Highlights show featuring key action from this year’s competition. Produced for the FEI, the programme will feature extensive Cross-Country footage as well as the final rounds of the Show Jumping where the competition will be won or lost.

Perhaps the most exciting new aspect of Horse & Country TV’s Badminton coverage this year will be a specially commissioned one-hour documentary – Badminton: A Rider’s View. In the run up to, and throughout the whole competition, Jenny Rudall will follow top eventer Francis Whittington, visiting his yard to observe and document his training regime first-hand, including a lesson with World Class Performance Manager, Yogi Breisner. The programme will give unique insight into what it takes to get horse and rider to peak condition and ready to compete at the highest level. Badminton: A Rider’s View is sponsored by Francis’s feed partner, Saracen Horse Feeds.

Commenting on this year’s line-up Richard Burdett, Managing Director of Horse & Country TV, said:

“This is our most ambitious Badminton schedule to date and it reflects the combination of top quality sports action and behind the scenes insight and access that our viewers love. We’re delighted to have Saracen’s support in the making of Badminton: A Rider’s View which will be a unique window into the world of top class eventing.”

Hugh Thomas, Event Director at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, commented:

“We are delighted that Horse & Country TV is able to show so much of Badminton, with in-depth coverage that could not be shown on the terrestrial broadcast channels.”

Aleš Opatrný – The Rolex One to Watch for December 2012

18 December 2012 – The Rolex One to Watch for December 2012 is awarded to Aleš Opatrný (CZE), who trains at JS Opatrný Hořovice (CZE).  During the month of November, the 31-year-old jumped from 355th to 238th – a move up the Rolex Rankings of 117 places.

Opatrný was born on 18 September 1981 in Hořovice (CZE), where he grew up on his family’s ranch, which has a 100-stable capacity and is situated approximately 60km south west of Prague (CZE). When he was two years old, Opatrný was introduced to riding by his father, Václav, who was a successful Eventing rider and triple champion of the Czech Republic. Equestrianism is unquestionably the Opatrný family’s main focus and they have been breeding horses as far back as 1924.

Opatrný cites January 2012’s joint Rolex One to Watch winner, German rider René Tebbel, as the Jumper that he admires most and he believes Tebbel has been the greatest inspiration in his career. His drive to succeed stemmed from his memorable victory in the 2000 FEI Young Riders European Championship, Hartpury (GBR), which he won with his dark bay stallion, Kris Kentaur. Opatrný’s motivation is to one day compete for his national team at the Olympic Games and to also climb the Rolex Rankings as high as he possibly can.

Ellerstina defeated La Dolfina, 12-10 in the Final of 2012 Argentine Open in a dramatic match on Saturday 8 December.

Pablo MacDonough opened the scoring for the match for La Dolfina early in the first chukka.  Gonzalito Pieres scored to tie it up at 1-1.  Three minutes later, Nico Pieres put Ellerstina ahead, 2-1, to end the first chukka.  Facundo Pieres scored the first goal of the second chukka, giving Ellerstina a 3-1 advantage, but La Dolfina stormed back.  Ellerstina fouls allowed Adolfo Cambiaso to convert a pair of 30 yard penalty shots to tie it up at 3-3.  Gonzalito Pieres’s second goal of the game had Ellerstina back on top, 4-3.  A foul in the Ellerstina goal mouth gave Cambiaso a short penalty shot for a goal and the chukka ended 4-4.

Goals were hard to come by in the third chukka. Adolfo Cambiaso put La Dolfina up 5-4 on a 40-yard penalty conversion. Facundo Pieres followed up Nico Pieres and tied it up on a goal from the field. At the end of three periods of play it was all even at 5-5.
