Daniel Bedoya and Abracadabra WKT Triumph in $30k Sunday Jumper Classic

Mill Spring, NC – August 23, 2020 – Daniel Bedoya (Magnolia, TX) capped off a successful 12 weeks at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) with a win in the $30,000 Sunday Jumper Classic aboard Abracadabra WKT, stopping the short-course timers in 35.111 seconds after also finishing third in Friday’s $15,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake. Taking second, Alberto Michan (Wellington, FL) guided Cosa Nostra to a time of 35.358 seconds with the 2010 Oldenburg mare (Conthargos x Quintender) owned in partnership with Daniel Michan Halbinger. Third place honors went to Doug Payne (Aiken, SC) and Quintessence, the 2011 Holsteiner gelding (Unknown x Unknown) owned by Jane Dudinsky, clearing the short course in 36.156 seconds.

The class saw 38 entries test the first round, with seven pairs advancing to the Skip Bailey (Loxahatchee, FL) course design. Bedoya and the 2008 Holsteiner mare (Casall x Romino) owned by Monica Hanks were first to go in the jump-off, and “sometimes, going first is a good thing,” Bedoya said. “You don’t see anybody, so you just ride what comes up and do your plan. Then, everybody has the pressure to catch you. Sometimes it works!”

John Angus and Ecanto J Elevate to $15,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake Win

August 21, 2020 – Eighteen-year-old John Angus (Fort Lauderdale, FL) piloted the Barnhill and Cheska entry, Ecanto J, to a win in the $15,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake in Tryon Stadium, stopping the jump-off timers in 33.274 seconds. In second, Willie Tynan (Lexington, KY) and Fancy Girl, the 2010 Dutch Warmblood mare (Unknown x Unknown) owned by Michelle Guardino-Dettelbach, toured the short course in 35.028 seconds, while third place went to Daniel Bedoya (Magnolia, TX) aboard Abracadabra WKT, a 2008 Holsteiner mare (Casall x Romino) owned by Monica Hanks, after charging around the jump-off in 35.145 seconds.

Tryon CDE Announced for September at TIEC

Mill Spring, NC – July 23, 2020 – The American Driving Society, Inc. (ADS) announced that Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) at Tryon Resort will host the 2020 ADS North American Preliminary and Intermediate Championships at the Tryon CDE, September 17-20. The Tryon CDE will also offer USEF Advanced classes. The Tryon CDE marks the first return of Driving to the venue since the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018, following the postponement of the Katydid CDE moving to the venue in 2020.

“We are pleased to be able to host the NACs at TIEC,” said Organizer Jennifer Matheson. “This is an excellent opportunity for our driving community to compete at a world championship venue.”

Both Dressage and Cones phases will be held in a sand fiber mixture footing arena and the Marathon course will wind through the White Oak Cross-Country Course, a former golf course that was also utilized at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018.

The venue features onsite lodging in one, three, and five-bedroom log cabins, a 50-room inn, nearby golf and sports club with an Olympic-sized pool, a nearby gun club, eight onsite restaurants from sushi to Italian and local fare, shopping, and more for competitors and spectators alike to enjoy. Permanent stabling throughout property is being utilized in compliance with all state, local, USEF and ADS COVID-19 guidelines.

Mill Spring, NC – July 21, 2020 – Kristen VanderVeen (Wellington, FL) added her name to both ends of the podium after the $25,000 Sunday Jumper Classic to conclude Tryon Summer 6 competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), grabbing first with Bull Run’s Almighty in a time of 40.435 seconds, and earning third aboard Bull Run’s Prince of Peace after their four-fault, 40.285-second jump-off performance. Second place honors went to David Blake (Wellington, FL) and Don’t Touch Du Bois, a 2009 Belgian Sport Horse mare (Kashmir Van Schuttershof x Indoctro) owned by Pine Hollow Farm, stopping the clock in 41.855 seconds.

Rowan Willis and Ekita Eindeken Z Zip to $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 3* Win

July 17, 2020 – Rowan Willis (AUS) continued his hot streak in the Speed Stake at TIEC with a win aboard Ekita Eindeken Z, Martine Lamesch’s 2010 Zangersheide mare (Emilion van T Schaaphof x Codex), stopping the clock in 62.95 seconds for the win over the Ken Krome (USA) course. Second went to Todd Minikus (USA) and the Todd Minikus LTD entry Calvalou, a 2007 Oldenburg gelding (Calvaro F.C. x Baloubet du Rouet), stopping the timers in 67.89 seconds, while third was awarded to Sean Jobin (CAN) and Darius, a 2008 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Warrant x Calvados) owned by Foxridge Stables Farms, after their 81.15-second performance including one time fault over the Ken Krome (USA) course design.

Colin Syquia Takes First and Second in $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby

July 17, 2020 – Colin Syquia (Wellington, FL) demonstrated winning consistency once again in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby at TIEC Friday, piloting two mounts to top two placings within a half point of each other in total scores: in first, Syquia rode Magic Lady H, the 2012 Belgian Warmblood mare (Cumthago C x Chita H) owned by Fiach Byrne Inc., to a two-round score of 183.5 after walking into the handy round with a 91, while Durant, the 2011 Hanoverian gelding (Stakkato x Chamira) owned by Eurasia Inc., scored a 94 in the handy to end up on a total score of 183 for second with Syquia in the irons. Third place was named to Megan Wexler (Ocala, FL), who rode Blue Moon, the 2015 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Durango VDL x Venneyfee), to a total score of 180 to round out the podium for the Dean Rheinheimer (Sheridan, IN)-designed track that tested 26 entries.

Mill Spring, NC – July 18, 2020 – In a close finish, Kent Farrington (USA) and Kaprice secured victory in the $137,000 EquiSafe Global Grand Prix CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers at 39.477 seconds. Nicole Shahinian-Simpson (USA) and Akuna Mattata, a 2008 Holsteiner mare (Quinar x Landwind II) owned by Carol Rosenstein and Silver Raven Farms, claimed second place with a clear jump-off score of 40.345 seconds, while Karen Polle (JPN) and her own With Wings, a 2003 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Larino x L.Ronald), sailed to third place just milliseconds behind with a time of 40.695 seconds.

Farrington and Kaprice, a 2010 Belgian Warmblood mare (Echo Van T Spieveld x Carthago) that Kent owns with Haity McNerney, bested a class of 37 entries and 10 jump-off contenders, sailing over jumps in the Ken Krome (USA)-designed course.

Mill Spring, NC – July 16, 2020 – Shane Sweetnam (IRL) and Indra Van De Oude Heihoef sped through the timers in 34.857 seconds to best the $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Sharn Wordley (NZL) and his own Casper, the 2006 Oldenburg gelding (Contender x Baloubet Du Rouet), cleared the short course in 35.191 seconds to take second, while Lillie Keenan (USA) and Fasther, a 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Vigo D’Arsouilles x Farmer) owned by Chansonette Farm LLC, produced a 35.2 second jump-off round to claim third.

Sweetnam and his own 2008 Belgian Warmblood mare (Casantos x Action-Breaker) were one of 60 entries to test the first-round track set by Ken Krome (USA), and one of 12 pairs to qualify for the jump-off round. “It was a tricky course. Ken did a good job. There were a lot of good riders and partnerships out there today. It was quite strong for a ranking class,” he shared. “I’m sure it set the horses up well for Saturday night. It was a bit more of a test than yesterday [$37,000 Wednesday Classic CSI 3*],” where Sweetnam and Indra Van De Oude Heihoef claimed second.

Sydney Shulman and Villamoura Speed to $37,000 Wednesday Classic CSI 3* Win

July 15, 2020 – Sydney Shulman (ISR) and Villamoura sped around the short course in 36.536 seconds, winning the $37,000 Wednesday Classic CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), with Shane Sweetnam (IRL) taking second in a time of 37.522 seconds aboard his own Indra Van De Oude Heihoef, the 2008 Belgian Warmblood mare (Casantos x Action-Breaker). Lacey Gilbertson (USA) and Baloppi, the Seabrook LLC 2007 Danish Warmblood mare (Balou du Rouet x Unknown), stopped the timers at 38.39 seconds to earn third.

Shulman and the 2009 Selle Francais mare (Diamant de Semilly x Unknown) owned by Jill Shulman were one of 21 pairs to qualify for the jump-off out of 54 entries challenging the Ken Krome (USA) course design, and Shulman shared that Villamoura is a top mount in her string: “She really stepped up this winter, and is one of my top horses. She jumped the Nations Cup for Israel and had a clear round there, and she won a five-star class at Deeridge. She’s on a roll! She jumped two national classes here last week and felt great. She was just all over this class today! It was so much fun.”

Mill Spring, NC – July 13, 2020 – Jack Hardin Towell (Camden, SC) and Billy Manjaro left out a few strides in the jump-off to take the $25,000 Sunday Jumper Classic win at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) to wrap up Tryon Summer 5 competition, stopping the clock at 27.795 seconds. Dena Sienne, the 2008 Dutch Warmblood mare (Van Gogh x Animo) owned by Waldman Horses BV and piloted by Roberto Teran Tafur (Wellington, FL), claimed second on a time of 28.393 seconds, while third went to Kristen VanderVeen (Wellington, FL) aboard Bull Run’s Prince of Peace, the Bull Run Jumpers Six LLC owned 2009 Holsteiner gelding (Cardenio x Contender), clearing the short course in 29.001 seconds.

Towell and the 2010 British Warmblood stallion (Animo x Cevin Z) owned by Whiterock Farm LTD. left not one, but two strides out to fly into first place, Towell explained: “He has such a big stride. In the first round, there was an eight-stride line and I did six strides there in the jump-off. I think I was the only person to do it in six, which was a little bit crazy, but the horse has such a big stride.”

Colin Syquia and Durant Dominate $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby

July 10, 2020 – Posting a two-round score of 173, Colin Syquia (Wellington, FL) and Durant, the 2011 Hanoverian gelding (Stakkato x Chamira) owned by Eurasia Inc., topped the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby. A half-point behind, reserve went to Daniel Geitner (Aiken, SC) and Madison Pan-Kita’s Grande Impression, the 2014 Holsteiner gelding (Nekton x Cassalina), scoring 172.5. In third, Ashley Conkle (Wellford, SC) and Tomcat earned 171.5 after two rounds over the Andy Christiansen course design, piloting the 2004 Warmblood gelding (Mezcalero x Kitten) for Agneta Currey.

Rowan Willis and Wellington Grandorie Whip Up $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 2* Win

July 10, 2020 – Rowan Willis (AUS) and Wellington Grandorie handled the $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 2* by more than four seconds, stopping the clock in 61.75 seconds to take top honors aboard the 2011 British Warmblood mare (Balloon x Grandira) Willis co-owns with Lady Mornington. Grant Seger (USA) and Idalgo, the 2010 Westphalian stallion (Indoctro x Clinton) owned by Hillary Drummond Sport Horses, LLC, cleared the Guilherme Jorge (BRA) course design in 66.03 seconds to claim second. Lillie Keenan (USA) piloted El Balou Old, the 2012 Oldenburger stallion (Eldorado VD Zeshoek x Balou du Rouet) owned by Chansonette Farm LLC, to third on a time of 66.86 seconds to round out the podium in a field of 22 entries.

Kristen VanderVeen (USA) and Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili sped to a 36.579-second jump-off round to take the win in Saturday’s $73,000 JTWG, Inc. Grand Prix CSI 2* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) at Tryon Resort. Brittini Raflowitz (ISR) and Hilton van de Breepoel, a 2007 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Contact Van de Heffinck x Opium) owned by ESI Show Jumpers, Maarten Huygens & Darragh Kerins, claimed reserve honors with a time of 39.153 seconds, with the yellow rosette going to Todd Minikus (USA) aboard the Bit by Bit Group’s Amex Z, the 2009 Zangersheide mare (Andiamo Z x Landaris), stopping the timers in 36.764 seconds with four faults.

The Guilherme Jorge (BRA) course design saw 39 contestants in the first round, with 10 horse-and-rider pairs returning to challenge the jump-off round. VanderVeen and the 2005 Belgian Warmblood stallion (Berlin x Darco) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Five LLC used both speed and tight turns to their advantage in the jump-off, she explained. “The jump-off, I really liked. The jump-offs are always fun with Frosty because he turns and he goes fast, so it’s fun.”

Mill Spring, NC – July 10, 2020 – Todd Minikus (USA) and Amex Z had a moment of disagreement on course and still dominated the jump-off in a time of 37.767 seconds to claim a $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 2* win at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) to kick off Tryon Summer 5 competition. Just behind on a time of 37.875 seconds, Sydney Shulman (ISR) and Azilis Du Mesnil, Jill Shulman’s 2009 Selle Francais mare (Tinka’s Boy x Jarnac), took second place, with Lillie Keenan (USA) and Fasther, the Chansonette Farm LLC entry and 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Vigo D’Arsouilles x Farmer), stopping the timers at 38.277 seconds for third.

Minikus and the 2009 Zangersheide mare (Andiamo Z x Landaris) owned by the Bit By Bit Group stuttered a bit on their way to the second jump-off obstacle, he explained: “It was a fast jump-off. I kind of got stuck in the corner from fence one to two, and almost circled, actually, and finally she came around, and I continued on to the fence. I thought for sure I wasn’t going to be fast enough, but it was good enough.”

David Blake and Don’t Touch Du Bois Untouchable in $10,000 Power & Speed Stake CSI 2*

July 9, 2020 – David Blake (IRL) and Don’t Touch Du Bois, a 2009 Belgian Sport Horse mare (Kashmir Van Schuttershof x Indoctro) owned by Pine Hollow Farm, dominated the speed phase in 26.893 seconds to take the win in Wednesday’s $10,000 Power & Speed Stake. Rowan Willis (AUS) and Wellington Grandorie, a 2011 British Warmblood mare (Balloon x Grandira) owned by himself and Lady Mornington, claimed second with a speed phase time of 27.419 seconds, while Daniel Geitner (USA) and Vesta De Lavardin, the 2009 Selle Francis mare (Diamant De Semilly x Gentleman Platiere) owned by November Hill, rounded out the podium on a time of 28.404 seconds.

Todd Minikus and Calvalou Capture $25,000 Sunday Classic Win

Mill Spring, NC – July 5, 2020 – Tryon Summer 4 concluded with a win for Todd Minikus (Lake Worth, FL) and Calvalou, stopping the jump-off timers in 34.762 seconds to best the field at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Kristen VanderVeen (Wellington, FL) and Bull Run’s Almighty, the 2008 Hanoverian gelding (Caspar x Quidam De Revel) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Six LLC, combined to produce a 35.398 second jump-off round for second place, while the podium was completed by Ginger Pop, the 2009 Irish Sport Horse mare (Luidam x Cruising), with Alison Robitaile (Upperville, VA) in the irons for Bertram and Diana Firestone clearing the short course in a time of 35.592 seconds.

Minikus and the 2007 Oldenburg gelding (Calvaro F.C. x Baloubet du Rouet) owned by Todd Minikus, LTD were able to turn and burn across the Oscar Soberon (Dallas, TX) course design to take the win, Minikus explained. “He’s had some nice successes and jumped big classes [in the last year that we’ve had him]. He hasn’t always been able to turn so well in the jump-offs, but lately he’s been turning better, and today he turned fantastically. I couldn’t be happier!”

Marion Gefaell and Home Run Bound Slide into $10,000 USHJA Pony Derby Win

July 4, 2020 – Marion Gefaell (Winston-Salem, NC) and her own Home Run Bound covered all bases to win the $10,000 USHJA Pony Derby at TIEC with a final score of 158. Just one point shy of first-place honors, Riley McKesson (Wellington, FL) and her own High Tops landed second place with 157 points, while J. J. Torano (Wellington, FL) and Somekindawonderful, owned by Augusta Iwasaki, took third with a total of 154.5.

David O’Brien and Maldonado SCF Win $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 3*

July 3, 2020 – David O’Brien (IRL) and Maldonado SCF, a 2012 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Diktator van de Boslandhoeve x Landino) owned by Spy Coast Farm, LLC, won the Tryon Summer 4 $6,000 Speed Stake CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers at 63.82 seconds. Katherine Strauss (USA) and Famous, a 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Aerobic TN x Kojak) owned by Katherine Strauss, LLC, took second place on a clear jump-off performance of 65.25 seconds, while Aaron Vale (USA) and Elusive, a 2009 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Rodrigoo x Capfucino), owned by Thinks Like A Horse, claimed third-place honors on time of 65.66 seconds.

Mill Spring, NC – July 2, 2020 – Eduardo Menezes (BRA) and Magnolia Mystic Rose put in a speedy 35.115 second jump-off round to take the win in Thursday’s $37,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Jenni McAllister (USA) piloted Escada V S, a 2007 Swedish Warmblood mare (Escudo 19 x For Feeling) owned by Viksberg Sateri AB, to second on a time of 36.743 seconds, while Beezie Madden (USA) and Chic Hin D Hyrencourt, the Abigail Wexner-owned 2008 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Taran de la Pomme x Elanville), rounded out the podium on a time of 38.674 seconds.

Menezes and the 2008 Brazilian Sport Horse mare (Zirocco Blue VDL x Unknown) owned by RM Agronegocios Eireli, who have been partnered since the mare’s appearance in 2019’s Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and have since collected solid placings together in Wellington, FL, were able to place themselves comfortably in the lead after speeding through the Oscar Soberon (MEX) designed track, he explained. “She’s a really good horse, and a fighter in the ring. You can always count on her!”

Kristen VanderVeen grabbed both ends of the podium in the $37,000 Wednesday Classic CSI 3* with Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili and Bull Run’s Almighty on Wednesday in Tryon Stadium, sailing to a 36.005 second jump-off round to take first with “Frosty” and stopping the timers aboard “Almighty,” the 2008 Hanoverian gelding (Caspar x Quidam De Revel) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Six LLC, in 36.51 seconds for third place. Eduardo Menezes (BRA) and Ennebel Van Het Posthuijs, the 2009 Dutch Warmblood mare (Numero Uno x Argentinus) he co-owns with H5 Stables, claimed second place with a time of 36.127 seconds.
