Santiago Lambre Claims $25,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix Win

Mill Spring, NC – August 19, 2019 – Santiago Lambre (Wellington, FL) and Con Rouet claimed Sunday’s $25,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) at Tryon Resort to conclude Tryon August 2 competition at the venue, laying down a jump-off time of 36.95 seconds. Taylor Land (Atlanta, GA) and Falco V, the Pinetree Farms Inc.-owned 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Bustique x Montreux), were back on the TIEC podium with a second-place jump-off time of 37.881 seconds, while David Blake (hometown) piloted Don’t Touch Du Bois, the 2009 Belgian Warmblood mare (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Indoctro) owned by Pine Hollow Farm, to third on a short-course time of 38.896 seconds.

Dean Rheinheimer’s course tested 27 entries in the initial round, with eight horse-and-rider pairs welcomed back to challenge the jump-off track. Last to go, Lambre and the 2010 Oldenburg gelding (Conthargos x Balou Du Rouet) owned by Salvador Onate Barron made easy work of the course despite being newly paired teammates.

“This is the second show I’ve had with him [Con Rouet],” explained Lambre. “He’s a new horse to me, and looks very competitive. I think he’s going to be a winner! I showed him in Michigan one week, and this is the second show. He’s very easy to ride, and careful. I got him three weeks ago from Mexico.”

Lambre and Con Rouet were fourth in Friday’s $5,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake, just missing out on the podium, but found their stride in Sunday’s jump-off course, Lambre detailed. “I thought it was a really nice course. Not too big, but difficult lines, so it was not easy for the riders. The jump-off was really nice,” he continued. “You could turn short and get a nice gallop. It was very nice!”

Competition was stiff, as fellow competitor Land has been on a hot streak at TIEC and had posted a tight time to beat, but Lambre utilized his position in the order of go to study where he could make up the time: “I was the last to go, so I saw the other riders. I had to do everything very short and forward, because it was really fast!”

Taylor Land Continues to Dominate the TIEC Podium with $5,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake Win

Taylor Land (Atlanta, GA) and Falco V sped around the short course in 26.077 seconds to earn the win in Friday’s $5,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake at TIEC, also claiming third place aboard Get Go, piloting the Pinetree Farms Inc. entry and 2012 Hanoverian gelding (Grey Top x World Diamond O) to a 27.496-second jump-off round. Santiago Lambre (Wellington, FL) and Chapiletto, a 2009 Oldenburg gelding (Chacco Blue x Pretty Woman) owned by Luis Gerardo Plascencia y Familia, produced a 27.004-second short course to claim second.

Course designer Dean Rheinheimer (Sheridan, IN) had 26 pairs attempt his first-round track, with nine entries earning a chance to compete over the jump-off course. Continuing her recent trend of three-for-three, Land piloted all three of her mounts through to the second round of competition, ultimately bookending the podium. “The course rode really well. There was a lot to do, so it was fun!” Land said of the course.

“He [Falco V] has just been amazing. He’s such a winner, and he always tries his heart out. He was so speedy today!” she said of the 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Bustique x Montreux) owned by Pinetree Farms Inc. “Falco is nine, and I’ve had him almost three years.”

Land has an impressive trio of horses that have truly hit their stride at TIEC recently and continue to collect consecutive podium placings. Land explained: “We rode complicated courses this summer at Spruce Meadows, and I think that really helped me make some strides this summer. All of the horses are just in a really good place with their age and mentality: Falco is nine, Liroy [30] is ten, and Grumbles [Get Go] is seven, and they’re all just in a really good place. They feel like they’re thriving!”

Get Go in particular has stepped up in the last few weeks, Land shared, competing in his first “Saturday Night Lights” Grand Prix in Tryon Stadium and taking first, despite “just starting to jump at this level,” Land revealed. “He’s just been amazing. This [Ring 4] was a new ring for him, and I am so proud of him! This is for sure the biggest he’s jumped in a smaller ring, so it was really nice to feel him jumping so well. I was a little bit more conservative on him in the jump-off because it was his first time jumping bigger in a smaller place, but he was amazing.”

Land hopes to keep her winning streak alive and will compete at the venue for the duration of the Tryon August Series, giving credit to “Team Land” for her consistent results: “I credit my recent success to having an amazing team, both at home and on the road, including my parents, Jay and Kim, my grooms and rider. They are all incredible and make my job so much easier!”

Julio Mendoza Prepares for Tokyo 2020 at Tryon Summer Dressage 5

Mill Spring, NC – August 15, 2019 – Tryon Summer Dressage 5 presented by Adequan® at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) was a good weekend for Columbus, NC resident Julio Mendoza (ECU) and Rosali, where they claimed FEI Grand Prix O/AA/J/Y competition on a score of 66.250%. Second place was earned by Jules Nyssen (USA) aboard Volturnus, the 2002 Dutch Warmblood gelding by Flemming owned by Jennifer Brinkley, with a score of 62.554%.

“Rosie is an 18-hand Danish Warmblood mare owned by Aileen Daly with a heart that is unbelievable. She’s a beautiful mover, with a good brain, a good heart, and I adore her,” said Mendoza of the mare he’s only been riding for four months. “She wants to give everything to you. She is spicy and sassy in a good way, and she’s everything you need for a Grand Prix.”

Though a frequent face at TIEC, Mendoza is chasing big goals on the heels of being the first representative from Ecuador to qualify for and compete in Dressage at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 (WEG) last September:

“We’re working with Rosali right now towards the Olympics [Tokyo 2020]. That’s our goal if everything goes to plan,” Mendoza continued. “I’ve been to the Pan-American Games, Bolivarian Games, and WEG, so now I’m going for the Olympics. If it doesn’t happen, great, but I’m going to give it everything. Rosie has the potential. We just started to develop a relationship, and I know that it will take time, but with respect and love everything will come together.”

Mendoza emphasized that his success at every level is rooted in the support of his “village” with the whole family behind him: “My wife is my manager, my right hand, and my everything. She manages my students, schedule, shows, and my program. Everything is run through her, and I’m so grateful to have her! And now my son is competing, too, and I’m super excited about that,” Mendoza shared. “It’s taking a village [to reach the Olympics]; I know that. My wife, my grooms, the farrier, the vet, and Rosali’s owner, Aileen. Thank God she’s letting me ride [Rosie]! Aileen is a wonderful client and an amazing friend who’s letting me ride a phenomenal horse,” Mendoza concluded.

Gisele Beardsley O’Grady and Januar Jump to $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby Victory

Mill Spring, NC – August 12, 2019 – Friday’s $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby awarded Gisele Beardsley O’Grady (Tryon, NC) the winner cooler and ribbons for her efforts aboard Ginny Barnette’s Januar, earning a two-round score of 172 to take the win. In second, Allen Nabors Jr. (Odessa, FL) piloted Lookalike, the 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Levistano x Paola), for Margot Hirsch on a score of 169, while Robert Stucky (Waxhaw, NC) and The Girl From Ipanema, a 2009 Hanoverian mare (Clinton I x Vorbuch) owned by Allie Rae Hayes, claimed third after earning a score of 166 after two rounds.

Fifteen pairs challenged the first-round course set by J. P. Godard (Aiken, SC), and it was Januar all the way after his initial score of 87. Beardsley O’Grady called the 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Junior Mariner x Poetri) “perfect” and “playful” on the way to victory.

“It went really well, so I couldn’t be happier,” said Beardsley O’Grady. “The course was nice. He’s a blast to ride, and he’s got a ton of experience, and I’m lucky to get to ride him. He’s a showman; he goes in there and shows off! So, that works in our favor.

“Everything pretty much rode to plan today. I had a couple lucky moments in the handy round, where he got a little playful, but I think they liked the way he jumped and forgave us for it! I think I could have helped him out just a little better, but everything pretty much rode to plan today. I got the advantage by riding a good horse that jumps so well! He’s perfect!”

Beardsley O’Grady emphasized that Januar is happiest in limited competition with National Derbies only, but he makes the most of every trip around the ring: “His story is a little long – he was imported a couple years ago, and has had a long recovery from a couple injuries,” she explained. “We’re lucky enough that he is back and fully recovered to be in the show ring. He has always loved showing, so I think that’s honestly also helped his recovery. He’s done really well here [at TIEC]. We do a limited amount of shows, and he just loves it every time.

“Jeanne [Smith], our trainer, and his owner, Ginny, have both obviously played a huge part in him,” Beardsley O’Grady continued. “He’s just perfect, and we love him. He’s awesome. Going forward, he will remain a National Derby horse. We want to protect him and keep him happy and sound. He’s not old, but with his prior injuries we want to keep him protected. Ginny just loves her horse, and Jeanne is such a good horseperson that she’s never going to push him,” she concluded. “They’re a really good team for him!”

Taylor Land Takes Entire Podium in $30,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix

Mill Spring, NC – August 10, 2019 – Taylor Land (Atlanta, GA) landed an iconic win in the $30,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) as the venue’s first rider to ever claim first, second, and third place in Grand Prix competition. Land topped the podium with Get Go, stopping the jump-off timers at 34.885 seconds. She also placed second and third aboard the Pinetree Farms Inc. entries, Liroy 30, a ten-year-old German Sporthorse (Levistano x King Kolibri), and Falco V, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Bustique x Montreux), clearing the short course in 35.081 seconds and 35.3 seconds, respectively. Marking the landmark event, riders Ricardo Villa and Genevieve Edwards joined Land on the podium to celebrate with her.

“It’s crazy! I never thought that was going to happen, but it’s amazing,” Land confided of her iconic win. “I’m so glad he [Get Go] won it; he’s my baby.”

The course, designed by J. P. Godard (Aiken, SC), tested 15 horse-and-rider combinations with nine pairs returning for the jump-off. Land shared that having more than one horse proved to be an advantage: “The last line in the jump-off, I expected to be able to get seven strides done on all of mine, [since] they’re all big-strided. With the first two, I decided to do the inside turn, and it just slowed me down and set me off to the right so much that I didn’t get the seven on either horse. With Grumbles [Get Go], I decided to go around and I lined it up in seven and it actually ended up being faster. [Having more than one horse] was a huge advantage.

“He’s amazing; he’s so special,” Land shared of Get Go, a Hanoverian, who she has owned for two years now. “We did the six-year-olds last year and we’ve been doing the seven-year-olds this year. He stepped up to do a few 1.40m classes in the spring, because we were preparing to do the seven-year-olds at Spruce [Meadows] where they were 1.40m. He was great there, so after that I felt like he was ready for the next step.” Land continued, “He was really good in the $5,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake [Thursday], so afterwards, my dad and I were talking and thought that maybe we should just enter him and walk it and see. It was a great track, and he just really stepped up to the plate.”

Taylor Land Takes Top Two in $5,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake at TIEC

Mill Spring, NC – August 8, 2019 – Taylor Land (Atlanta, GA) landed in the money with all three of her mounts after Thursday’s $5,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) at Tryon Resort, piloting Liroy 30 to victory in a time of 30.598 seconds to kick off Tryon August 1 competition at the venue. Just behind in second, Land and Falco V, the Pinetree Farms Inc. entry, cleared the short-course in 30.872 seconds, while Allen Nabors Jr. (Odessa, FL) achieved third place with Bon Chatsworth Pierre, owned by Allen Nabors and Jessie Grabowski, stopping the jump-off timers in 31.827 seconds.

Fifteen horse-and-rider pairs challenged the track set by J. P. Godard (Aiken, SC), with five returning for the jump-off. Land, who has had consistent success as a competitor at TIEC and also collected eighth aboard Get Go, attributed long strides and talented horses to her winning result. “I had my three best horses in this class today,” she explained. “Get Go is seven, Falco [V] is nine, and Liroy [30] is ten. They’re all such fantastic horses – all in a little bit different stages of life – but they’re all so special.

“I think with all three of them I have a little bit of an advantage in the sense that they’re all really careful and quick in front, and they all have huge strides,” Land assessed. “It’s easy to leave strides out that way – I can do leave-outs without taking big risks. Today I really wanted to be just smooth and forward in the jump-off. There was a potential inside turn after the first jump, but it was pretty aggressive [of a turn] for the first day, and I wanted them to feel ready for Saturday, so I actually went around and just went really forward,” Land revealed. “I did a few [stride] leave-outs, and then one tighter turn back to the last line. I just wanted to try to stay smooth with an even rhythm to prepare for the Grand Prix.”

Despite taking the longer track on course, Land admitted that she ultimately had to steady her long-strided mounts and still made quick time over the course, especially with Falco V: “Falco was on such a massive stride today that the leave-outs were really steady for him, actually! So, that walked a little differently than it rode, but overall I thought the course rode about how I walked it. It was a great track, and a great start for the week.”

Roberto Teran Tafur Earns Blue in $36,000 Classic CSI 3* aboard Dena Siennem

Mill Spring, NC – July 21, 2019 – It was Roberto Teran Tafur (COL) aboard Dena Sienne to win the $36,000 Classic CSI 3* on Friday during Tryon Summer 6 at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), with a fault-free effort in a time of 36.966 seconds. Santiago Lambre (MEX) and Doloris, a 2008 Dutch Warmblood mare (Harley VDL x Colorado D) owned by Aurora Rangel De Alba, earned second place with their 37.906 second jump-off round, while Todd Minikus (USA) and Calvalou, a 2007 Oldenburg gelding (Calvaro F.C. x Baloubet du Rouet) owned by Todd Minikus, LTD, claimed third-place honors with a finish of 38.12 seconds.

A total of 22 riders contested the first-round course designed by Ken Krome (USA), with six pairs returning for the jump-off. “The course was really good,” Teran Tafur explained. “It was a little technical. The course designer is very fair and very technical. All the horses jumped great, and I think the best horse won!

“I [was up against] Todd Minikus, Santiago Lambre, Samuel Parot, and Juan Ortiz; every single one of them is a fast rider. I wanted to do my fastest course while trying to leave the jumps up, and everything just worked out for me,” Teran Tafur shared of his strategy heading into the jump-off.

Although Teran Tafur and the 2008 Dutch Warmblood mare (Van Gogh x Animo) owned by Walkman Horses BV were competing in the 1.50m divisions in Wellington this past winter, Teran Tafur’s winter injury resulting in a broken knee put him and his mount out of the show ring for almost ten weeks. “This is her [Dena Sienne’s] second show back and finally she’s getting back into the groove [of things]. Sometimes, for horses that’s a little hard,” he continued. “She’s not ready for the Grand Prix this week. I have another one that’s going in it, but this one has had three days in a row [of showing] and I think that’s enough until the next show.”

Horseware Ireland Grand Prix CSI 3* Win Was in the Cards for Alison Robitaille and Ace

Mill Spring, NC – July 20, 2019 – Alison Robitaille (USA) and Ace dominated the $134,00 Horseware Grand Prix CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers at 40.376 seconds. Scott Keach (AUS) and Falcon de Hus Z, a 2009 Zangersheide gelding (Florian de la Vie*Bazooka x Adlantus AS) owned by Five Henry Stables, took second place on a clear jump-off performance of 40.805 seconds, while Hector Florentino (DOM) and Carnaval, a 2005 Oldenburg gelding (Chacco-Blue x Landadel) owned by Spruce Meadows Ltd., claimed third-place honors on a 40.947 second finish.

The course, designed by Ken Krome (USA), tested 30 entries in the class and had only six pairs return for the jump-off. Robitaille shared that she had anticipated more riders to make it into the jump-off when she originally walked the course: “I thought there might be more actually when I walked the course, but there seemed to be faults everywhere.”

Robitaille was proud to be one of the six to continue into the jump-off. “I thought it was a really fair course considering the field of riders and the courses that Kenny had. I thought he ended up with an ideal clear amount,” commented Robitaille.

The 2005 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Berlin x Irco Polo), owned by Bertram and Diana Firestone, has been paired with Robitaille for the past three years, allowing her to return to Grand Prix level competition. “I took a pretty big break from riding at the Grand Prix level – I was married and had two children. He [Ace] was the first horse I got to really get back into the upper level of the sport with,” Robitaille shared.

Since returning to the International Grand Prix level in 2017, Robitaille and Ace have represented the United States in the 2017 Nations Cup in Coapexpan, Mexico and also competed in the 2018 FEI World Cup Finals in Paris, where Robitaille made her fifth World Cup Final appearance and finished 14th overall. “I really missed it,” Robitaille admitted of the five year break she took from the international circuit.

Lambre Wins $36k Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* with Cetano Van Aspergem Z

Mill Spring, NC – July 18, 2019 – Santiago Lambre (MEX) and Cetano Van Aspergem Z were unbeatable in the $36,000 Horseware Ireland Welcome Stake CSI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) on Thursday morning of Tryon Summer 6, stopping the jump-off timers at 36.867 seconds. Todd Minikus (USA) rode Amex Z, a 2009 Zangersheide mare (Andiamo Z x Landaris) owned by the Bit by Bit Group, to second place on a double-clear round with a jump-off time of 38.067 seconds. Hector Florentino (DOM) and Carnaval, a 2005 Oldenburg gelding (Chacco-Blue x Landadel) owned by Spruce Meadows Ltd, claimed third-place honors with a double-clear effort in 38.317 seconds.

Ken Krome (USA) set the track to test the 31 pairs entered in the competitive 1.50m class. Lambre expressed that it was a good course to prepare for the rest of the week, saying, “It was a really nice course for a Welcome. It was big enough, but it was not too difficult for the first day, and was great preparation for the Grand Prix [Saturday night].” Lambre also shared that he enjoyed having a competitive jump-off with 13 pairs returning: “It was nice to have 13 in the jump-off; it is always nice when the first day has a good number. The jump-off course was very nice, it had lots of options, and was a very good course design.”

The 2009 Zangersheide gelding (Clinton x Ahorn Z) owned by Tal Milstein Stables, will also be competing in the Grand Prix on Saturday night, and Lambre hopes the momentum will carry on throughout the week. “This is the horse [Cetano Van Aspergem Z] that I will be jumping in the Grand Prix on Saturday. [Winning] today was good preparation. Normally, I try not to push him too fast, but I saw the first two or three horses go and I said, ‘I will try,’ and it worked!” Lambre commented.

Sharn Wordley Claims Second FEI Win in $36k Sunday Classic CSI 2* Riding Rye Val de Mai

Mill Spring, NC – July 16, 2019 – Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Rye Val de Mai sped to win the $36,000 Sunday Classic CSI 2* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the jump-off timers at 36.358 seconds fault-free to claim the win. Diego Perez Bilbao (ESP) and the Starlight Farms 1 LLC entry, Helios, a 2007 Belgian Warmblood gelding (Couleur Rubin x Grandeur), took second place on a clear jump-off performance of 37.168 seconds, while Samantha Rice (CAN) and Ringwood Zebo, a 2009 Irish Sport Horse gelding (Califax x Ringwood Audacity) owned by NRG Farm LLC, claimed third-place honors with a clear round and time of 40.211 seconds.

Course designer Bernardo Costa Cabral (POR) had 22 entries test the first course, with five returning for the jump-off. “The first round rode great. Bernardo is such a good course builder,” Wordley explained. “All of his courses ride well; I’ve never ridden one of his courses that didn’t ride well, and he always nails it. Everything is smooth and is always challenging enough, but with nothing that doesn’t make sense, so I really love riding his courses.”

Wordley shared that he has owned the 2005 Selle Francais stallion (Helios de La Cour II x Type D’Elle) for about three years now. “He’s a big trier, and he’s just a really good horse to have on your team. You can pull him out for any class and he gives his all.”

Wordley continued, “He does the ranking classes at different shows and I’m deciding whether I’ll keep him for next week’s class here or take him home and jump him in Kentucky. I haven’t decided yet. He’s always busy, because he’s a good part of the team. He has a light winter, so summer is when he does most of his jumping.”

Sharn Wordley and Gatsby Navigate to $72,000 Nutrena Grand Prix CSI 2* Win at TIEC

Mill Spring, NC – July 13, 2019 – Sharn Wordley (NZL) and his own Gatsby raced to a 36.033-second win in the $72,000 Nutrena® Grand Prix CSI 2* at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Adam Prudent (USA) and Romeo de Villaret, the 2005 Selle Francais stallion (Mr. Blue (NL) x If de Merze) owned by Plain Bay Sales, claimed second-place honors, halting the jump-off timers with a time of 36.242 seconds. Abigail McArdle (USA) and Victorio 5, a 2006 Hanoverian stallion (Uccello x Graf Top) owned by Victorio Equine Group LLC, rounded out the podium with their 36.609-second performance in the short course.

Bernardo Costa Cabral (POR) had 42 pairs challenge his first-round course, with seven returning to compete in the jump-off. “He [Cabral] did a really good job,” emphasized Wordley. “He made the course tricky enough that it was hard to jump. I think the height was perfect, and the time was just right that you had to go quick enough, which caused some problems, but without making it too difficult for people. So, I think he nailed it. He did such a good course.”

Wordley piloted two horses through the first-round track, and explained that tonight was Gatsby’s time to shine. “My second horse, [Any], didn’t have a very good warm-up, so it just wasn’t her night, but Gatsby was awesome.”

Though it was Gatsby’s night, it wasn’t a jump-off designed for the 2004 Irish Sport Horse stallion (Simba x Cruise On), Wordley admitted: “In the jump-off, my strategy actually didn’t go to plan. Gatsby doesn’t turn so well to the right, and there were two tight turns to the right in the jump-off,” he explained. “I actually wanted to do two less strides from [fences] two to three, and two less strides [in the other turn], but I just wanted to go fast enough to put pressure on the others.

“That way,” Wordley continued, “if they wanted to beat me, they needed to do something that could cause a rail, which is what happened. I think the only one who was faster had two [rails] down trying to beat my time, so it worked out.”

“I like winning… it’s good!” Wordley concluded. “Gatsby likes winning; he loves it. And it’s always good to beat Santiago Lambre,” he added of his competitor who piloted two rides in the jump-off. “Even if it’s in the 1.30m, I like to beat him, because that guy is fast!”
