Largest Commercial Airlift of International Horses Heads to the 2010 Alltech FEI WEG

The largest commercial airlift of horses ever undertaken for a single event will depart from Belgium this week heading to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, which are taking place in the United States for the first time in the 20-year history of the event.

Almost 450 horses are departing Europe between the 16th and 29th of September. Ten specially constructed charter flights will leave from Belgium’s Liege airport and the Amsterdam airport over the next 14 days.

These European charter flights form part of an even larger worldwide airlift of horses competing in the eight different disciplines of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky between September 25th and October 10th.

In addition to the 445 horses departing from Europe, 19 horses from Australasia and 35 from South America will fly into the United States in the upcoming week. Shelly Temple and her 12 year old Morgan gelding LR Ami B-Line (“Cooper”) won the USEF Single Pony Champion in combined driving for the second time in four years.  Held this year at the Laurels of Landhope in Kennett Square, PA, the first day of competition began with dressage.  Shelly and Cooper held a comfortable lead with a score after dressage of 43.73.  Shelly remarked that “Cooper was responsive and willing throughout the day.”  Day two consisted of the cross country marathon with an overall distance of 16 kilometers.  Shelly and navigator/husband Fran Doto drove a solid marathon to maintain their lead into day three, the cones competition.  The cones competition saw Temple maintain her overall lead to follow up her 2009 reserve champion in the single pony championships.

In the Heat and Humidity, Electrolytes to the Rescue!

When it’s time to sweat, Electrolytes must come to the rescue!

With record temperatures and high humidity plaguing our horses, care must be taken to keep your horse hydrated and healthy.  That is when giving your horse Electrolytes is essential.

Sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium are the primary electrolytes (ions) needed by a working horse. When ions are balanced, they promote water consumption and retention, which can eliminate dehydration and other health problems. Electrolytes will keep your horse well on those super hot days.
