Angel Karolyi Begins New Partnership with $30,000 Raleigh Grand Prix Win

November 20, 2012 – Raleigh, North Carolina – Competing in their first show together, Venezuela’s Angel Karolyi and Indiana 127 scored victory in the $30,000 Raleigh Grand Prix at the RMI Raleigh Benefit Horse Show held November 14 to 19 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

2008 Olympic course designer Steve Stephens whittled a large starting field of 26 entries down to four jump-off contenders in the Saturday night feature event.  Karolyi had the advantage of being the last to go, having watched Sloan Coles post a clear round riding Chantilly while Tracy Magness and Regan Roberts both faulted.

“I was able to watch Sloan go with her very quick, careful mare,” said Karolyi.  “She was the only one clear in the jump-off; however, she chose to go around one of the inside options.  I thought if I had a chance to beat her, that would be my opportunity to do so.”

Super Staut Reigns Supreme in Stuttgart

Stuttgart (GER), 18 November 2012 – Kevin Staut broke German hearts today when, despite all the odds being in favour of a home-side win, it was the Frenchman who came out on top in the fifth qualifying round of the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping 2012/2013 Western European League series at Stuttgart.  Partnering the on-form grey mare Silvana HDC, Staut snatched what looked like certain victory from Germany’s Marcus Ehning and Noltes Kuchengirl when quicker by a margin of just one-hundredth of a second in an action-packed 11-horse jump-off against the clock.

Third place went to Portugal’s Luciana Diniz and Winningmood, while Sweden’s Jens Fredricson and Lunatic slotted into fourth.  Today’s result leaves Staut with the same number of points as Western European League leader Sergio Alvarez Moya from Spain who went out of contention this afternoon with a single mistake in the opening round of the competition.  The Spaniard, however, continues to head the league table going into the next round at Geneva, Switzerland in December because he has had more consistently strong results so far throughout this Rolex indoor season.

Artisan Farms Acquires Two New Mounts for Eric Lamaze

November 14, 2012 – Wellington, Florida – Artisan Farms has acquired two new mounts for 2008 Olympic Show Jumping Champion Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, Ontario, Canada.

Rosana du Park, a 2005 bay Selle Francais mare (Kannan x Quinine de Livoye), and Big Smile, a 2006 grey Westphalian mare (Cartano x Hors de la Loi II), have joined the stables at Artisan Farms.  Both horses have successfully competed in FEI-sanctioned young horse competitions in Europe.  Purchased from Gilbert De Roock of Belgium, Rosana du Park and Big Smile arrived in Florida on November 13.

“Both are my type of horse, very careful with lots of blood,” said Lamaze of the two new horses that will join Coriana van Klapscheut in competing with him for Artisan Farms.  “They really felt special to me when I tried them, and show a lot of quality, talent and potential.  I am excited to start working with them.”

Charlie Jacobs Helps USA Win Nations Cup at CSIO-W Buenos Aires, Claims Speed Derby Victory

Buenos Aires, Argentina – November 13, 2012 – Charlie Jacobs of Deeridge Farm had a very successful return trip to the Buenos Aires’ CSIO-W at Haras El Capricho. He piloted Leap of Joy to two clear efforts during the Nations Cup competition to help the United States capture the victory, and then defended his title in the International Speed Derby with Flaming Star. The weekend concluded with Jacobs and Leap of Joy picking up the fifth place award in the World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix after producing a clear first round effort.

On Saturday, November 10, Jacobs was alongside teammates Quentin Judge, Catherine Pasmore, and Alison Robitaille for Nations Cup competition. Chef d’Equipe Norman Dello Joio chose Jacobs as the leadoff rider, with the U.S. drawing the first position in the team jumping order. Jacobs was up to the challenge, producing a faultless effort with Leap of Joy and returning for the second round to post another clear round. Jacobs’ teammates were also on point, and the team finished on four faults to earn the team victory, while Canada and Argentina tied for second.

Moya Turns On the Magic in Verona

Verona (ITA), 11 November 2012 – On an afternoon of pure magic in the jumping stadium at Verona, Italy, today Spain’s Sergio Alvarez Moya produced a stunning victory in the fourth leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping 2012/2013 Western European League. This competition was special for a number of reasons, not least because the Spaniard was riding a horse that was just eight years old, and because Italy’s Luca Moneta was so proud and yet so humble when filling runner-up spot.

The excitement generated during the 12-horse jump-off was electrifying as horses and riders rose to the occasion to produce a piece of pure theatre that had spectators gripping their seats.  As third-place finisher, Sweden’s Malin Baryard-Johnsson said afterwards, “The sport was amazing; I haven’t competed in a class as exciting as this in a very, very long time!”

Today’s result has left Moya well on the road to the Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping Final in Gothenburg, Sweden next April.  Already at the head of the leaderboard before today’s class began, he has now accumulated a massive 58 points, so has no more worries about qualification.

US Cruises to Victory in FEI Nations Cup at CSIO-W Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina – The U.S. jumpers had to wait an extra day to take part in FEI Nations Cup competition at the CSIO-W Buenos Aires after the class was delayed due to rain on Friday. The four Americans proved the wait was well worth it as they stormed to victory finishing on a two round total of four faults.

Leading off the U.S. effort were Charlie Jacobs (Boston, MA) and Deeridge Farms’ Leap of Joy. Jacobs utilized the experience he earned last year at CSIO Buenos Aires to jump two faultless rounds with the 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding. They were one of only three combinations to produce a double clear effort on Saturday.

Riding in the second spot for the U.S. was Quentin Judge (Wellington, FL) with Double H Farm’s HH Carotino. In the first round the 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding jumped an immaculate clear round and returned later in the day producing a four fault effort for Judge in his U.S. team debut.

The Rolex One to Watch – November 2012

9 November 2012 – The Rolex One to Watch for November 2012 is awarded to Saer Coulter (USA), who trains at Copernicus Stables LLC, California (USA).  During the month of September, the 21-year-old jumped from 294th to 209th – a move up the Rolex Rankings of 85 places.

Coulter was born in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA), although she was brought up in San Francisco, CA where she lives. She is currently enrolled at Stanford University, CA (USA) where she is Majoring in Art History. Riding is a family affair with Coulter’s younger sister, Audrey, also actively competing in the Jumper ring. The sisters are currently trained by Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and her husband, Markus Beerbaum.

Rolex Testimonee, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, commented, “Markus and I have trained Saer since January 2011, and her progress has been phenomenal. She has become very consistent at the top level, which was evident this year on the Global Champions Tour circuit. She has had a lot of clear rounds and nice ribbons, and with her current string of horses I have no doubt that there is a lot more to come from her.”

Ian Millar and Hickstead Inducted into Jump Canada Hall of Fame

November 7, 2012 – Toronto, Ontario – Ten-time Olympian Ian Millar and 2008 Olympic Show Jumping Champion horse Hickstead were inducted into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame.  Presented by BMO Financial Group, the seventh annual Induction Ceremony and Gala was held on Sunday, November 4, 2012, in Toronto, ON.

More than 300 members of the equestrian community filled the Liberty Grand to full capacity to celebrate the inductions of Millar, who set a world record with 10 Olympic appearances in London, and Hickstead, the horse who captured a nation’s heart with his winning style.

Millar, 65, was inducted in the Individual Builder category.  Fondly known as ‘Captain Canada’ to his legions of fans, Millar made his Olympic debut in 1972 and has been named to every Canadian Olympic Team since.  Tom Gayford, teammate and chef d’equipe for many of Millar’s Canadian Show Jumping Team appearances, presented Millar with his Jump Canada Hall of Fame trophy.

FEI Launches Transformed FEI Nations Cup Jumping Series

Istanbul (TUR), 6 November 2012 – The FEI Nations Cup Jumping will have a fabulous new look – and a new name – from 2013 onwards, following finalisation of a 16 million Euro four-year sponsorship package from the Saudi Equestrian Fund. The series will now be called the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup.

The sponsorship deal, worth four million Euro per annum and running through to the end of 2016, was announced at the FEI Bureau’s first meeting at the Federation’s General Assembly in Istanbul (TUR). The Bureau has given its unanimous approval for new rules for the series, completing the remodelling process initiated in April of this year.

“This is a truly historic occasion,” FEI President HRH Princess Haya said in making the announcement. “We have transformed a historic series and modernised it, without losing the fabulous tradition that dates back over 100 years. Now we have a series that will really catch the imagination of sports fans and the attention of the world’s media. We’re ready to take on the top sports.

Olympic Champion Takes Over World Number One Slot on Rolex Rankings

Lausanne (SUI), 6 November 2012 – Steve Guerdat (SUI), the newly-crowned Olympic champion, has taken over as World Number One on the Rolex Rankings list published today. With 2,525 points, Guerdat takes over from European champion Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE), who drops down to fourth place (2378).

Olympic team gold medallist Nick Skelton (GBR) is in second place, just three points ahead of Germany’s Christian Ahlmann.

It has been a historic season for Guerdat, who turned 30 in June, and for Swiss equestrianism. Guerdat became the first Swiss rider to be crowned Olympic Jumping champion since 1928 when he steered the talented 11-year old Selle Français Nino des Buissonnets to individual gold at London 2012. In the last 12 months he has picked up Rolex Ranking points in no less than 89 competitions.
