Argentina Wins Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup in Thrilling Finale

Argentina were victorious in a spectacular end to the Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup today, Friday 5th October, claiming a 9-8 win in the Final over the USA, at the Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club.

A flurry of goals marked the beginning of the match, both teams converting a total of nine between them in the opening two chukkas. Argentina fell behind early on, with a double strike from US Captain Mike Azzaro setting the pace. The lead didn’t last long as the Argentines began to take control of the game, levelling by the end of the first chukka, and subsequently scoring four unanswered goals in the second after the USA had initially gone ahead, making it 6-3.

The third chukka broke the trend, as neither team could find a way past their opponents in a goalless seven minutes. Polo’s brightest young talent from around the world were on show at the Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club today, Thursday 4th October, as Under-16 teams from Argentina and England contested the Youth Final of the Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup, with the South Americans taking the title in a thrilling 7-5.5 win.

Both teams had overcome difficult fixtures in the semi-finals to reach the international youth showpiece, providing an exciting atmosphere as the players prepared to face off. Argentina’s one goal handicap advantage meant England started the match 1.5 points the better, which is how the score line remained for the entire first chukka, as both teams cancelled each other out in a goalless opening. Juan Nagore and and Joaquin Sanchez Herreo made sure this would not continue to be the case, each scoring within two minutes of the second chukka and taking the Argentines into the lead. England duly responded with a brace from Ed Banner-Eve, retaining their lead at the end of the first half.

Hong Kong Beat England to Third in Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup

Hong Kong recorded an impressive 8-6 victory over England today, Wednesday 3rd October, in the Subsidiary Final of the Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup, securing $80,000 worth of sponsorship money and third place in the international competition.

Kicking off at the Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club, it was Hong Kong who started the better of the two teams, taking an early 2-0 lead inside the first four minutes, with Jose Donoso and John Fisher both converting scoring opportunities for the Asian side. As the opening chukka drew to a close, England’s James Harper got his team back into contention, finding a way through the opposition defence to halve the deficit.

The second chukka saw Hong Kong look to retain their two goal advantage, John Fisher scoring on both occasions, but England would not go away, hitting back after each of Fisher’s goals, thanks to a double from captain, James Beim. The game continued to follow the same pattern as Hong Kong twice increased their lead only for England to take the teams back to within a single goal of each other moments later.

England started the match the strongest, storming ahead into an early 4-2 lead, with two goals from Captain James Beim, and strikes from both Oliver Cudmore and Mark Tomlinson, giving them a commanding position at the end of the second chukka. Argentina made sure the English advantage was short-lived however, with an emphatic run of six unanswered goals which included a hat-trick from Santiago Cernadas, and braces from both, Juan Ambroggio and Argentine Captain, Marcos Araya. Only a penalty shootout could separate the two teams in the opening game of the highly anticipated Fortune Heights Super Nations Cup at Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club today, Monday 1st October, with the USA converting three penalties to Hong Kong’s one, to claim the victory after an 8-8 draw in normal time.

In a hugely exciting and fiercely contested fixture, Hong Kong held a slender lead for the vast majority of the six chukka game, before goals from Chris Mackenzie and John Fisher opened up a three point gap going into the final three minutes. With the game looking likely to be over, the USA hit back three times to level the match, thanks to goals from Mason Wroe, Jeff Hall and Mike Azaro, and may have even won it as a shot hit the post in the final seconds. Penalties then ensued, which saw Wroe, Hall and Kris Kampson all convert their efforts for the USA, whilst only Hong Kong’s Jose Donoso could score from the spot, as Fisher and Mackenzie missed their chances, giving the USA team the win.

Azaro of the USA led the scoring with five goals to his name, whilst Hong Kong’s 8-goal player John-Paul Clarkin hit four for the opposition team. Remarkably, Hong Kong ended three of the six chukkas in front, taking the lead on seven separate occasions, with the USA only coming out on top in the penalty shootout.
