O’Brien and Vale Ride Away with Jumper Wins in Classic Champions Developing Jumper Tours

Lexington, Ky. – July 31, 2019 – The Classic Champions Developing Jumper Tour kicked off its fifth show of the eight-part tour Wednesday at the Kentucky Summer Classic with a talented collection of up-and-coming young horses tackling the 5, 6 and 7-year-old divisions. While Aaron Vale and Gray’s Inn topped the leaderboard in the 5-year-old class held in the Walnut Ring, the Rolex Stadium saw David O’Brien emerging victorious with the fastest double-clear round in the 7-Year-Old Jumpers. The 6-Year-Old division followed, where Vale topped the leaderboard once again, this time competing three horses in the class before riding away with a one-two finish with Vander Esch and Carina, respectively.

Gogul and Torano Tie for Grand Hunter Champion

Professional hunters wrapped up Wednesday. The Grand Hunter Championship, presented by Visse Wedell, is awarded to the competitors with the most points accumulated in the Green 3’6″ Hunter, Green 3’9″ Hunter, Green Conformation Hunter, High Performance Conformation Hunter, and the High Performance Working Hunter divisions. Similar to last week, there was a tie for Grand Hunter Championship title. Jeff Gogul with Roberts Stables LLC’s Maverick alongside Jimmy Torano aboard Amethyst Equestrian Consulting LLC’s California both earned 44 points in their respective divisions to tie for the prestigious prize.

Darragh Kenny Continues Streak to Win $35k Commonwealth Grand Prix with Scarlett Du Sart Z

Lexington, Ky. – May 12, 2019 – The Kentucky Spring Horse Show closed out in the Rolex Stadium on Sunday with the $35,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix, sponsored by Audi of Lexington. With 44 starters challenging each other, it was Darragh Kenny that once again could not be beat in the jump-off, this time winning with Vlock Show Stables’ Scarlett Du Sart Z. Kenny also walked away with the Leading Open Jumper Rider Award, sponsored by Envisian Products, after accumulating the most points through his top placings in the Welcome Speed, Hagyard Lexington Classic, Kentucky Spring Grand Prix, and Sunday’s grand prix.

Abigail McArdle and Cade Capture $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix

Earlier in the day, the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix took place in the Rolex Stadium, giving up-and-coming athletes the opportunity to try their hand at the 1.40m and 1.50m height. Twenty-five athletes entered the class hoping to walk away with the winning title, but it was Abigail McArdle and her longtime partner Cade who took the top prize. The 16 effort track proved tricky for some competitors with both time and jumping faults playing a role in the day’s challenges. Only three competitors returned for the jump-off, Delaney Flynn, Tanimara Macari, and McArdle.

Havens Schatt Is Spectacular to Win $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby

Sunday competition highlighted top hunter horses in the Stonelea Ring with the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by Dietrich Equine Insurance where Havens Schatt and Spectacular claimed the win.

Jeff Gogul Maintains $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby Title

Preceding Sunday’s international derby, the Stonelea Ring saw 25 horse-and-rider combinations contest the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, sponsored by World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, the first of 15 World Equestrian Center/Kentucky Horse Shows USHJA National Hunter Derby Series events, where Jeff Gogul defended his title to once again claimed the victory, this time aboard Counselor.

Danielle Goldstein and Lizziemary Win $391k Palm Beach Equine Clinic Grand Prix CSI 5* at WEF

Wellington, FL – February 23, 2019 – Making their mark in the second five-star event of the circuit were Danielle Goldstein (ISR) and Lizziemary, who topped the $391,000 Palm Beach Equine Clinic Grand Prix CSI 5* on Saturday, February 23, at the 2019 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

There were 37 entries in the five-star grand prix, and six were clear and moved on to the jump-off over a course designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA).

Jeff Gogul and Jackie MacDonald Take Home Victories in $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby

WEF hosted the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Friday, February 22. Rings 11 and 12 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center were combined to allow course designer Robert McGregor room for a larger track with more options. The derby was split into two categories — professional and junior/amateur — that each offered $10,000 in prize money and saw over 30 horse-and-rider combinations contest each section.

Jeff Gogul secured the win in the professional section aboard Roaring Brook LLC’s Counselor, while Jackie MacDonald bested the field in the junior/amateur section with Jennifer MacDonald’s Chalk Hill.

Chloe Schmidt and Dramatic TF Win Ariat National Adult Medal

Fourteen adult equitation riders contested the course in the FarmVet Ring in hopes of returning to test for the Ariat National Adult Medal. With a first round score of 82 and a flawless test, Chloe Schmidt of Ridgefield, CT captured the win aboard the seven-year-old Holsteiner mare (Cunningham x Luo-Luo), Dramatic TF.

Of the 14 original competitors, four were asked to return: Isabella Lombardo, Taylor Blackburn, Meghan Knapic, and Schmidt. Those that returned to test were asked to canter the first fence, counter-canter the second fence, canter fence seven, hand-gallop fence eight, and then exit the ring at a walk to demonstrate consistency and control of the horse.

Kevin Babington and Mark Q Win $72,000 Equinimity WEF Challenge Cup Round 4

Wellington, FL – January 31, 2019 – Irish Olympian Kevin Babington rode Mark Q to the win in the $72,000 Equinimity WEF Challenge Cup Round 4 CSI 4* on the grass derby field of the Equestrian Village at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) on Thursday, January 31, at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

Sixty-five entries contested Thursday’s WEF Challenge Cup track set by Anderson Lima (BRA), with six horses qualifying to come back for the jump-off. When Babington and Mark Q entered the ring as the penultimate entry to return, Carly Anthony (USA) and Clochard, owned by Neil Jones Equestrian Inc., had set the time to beat at 44.13 seconds. However, Babington and his longtime partner, a 17-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, would make short work of that time, shaving off more than four seconds to ultimately clinch the win with a time of 40.03 seconds.

Jeff Gogul and Quintessa Stand Out in Equine Tack & Nutritionals Green Hunter 3’6”

The E. R. Mische Grand Hunter Field kicked off competition Thursday at the 2019 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) with a field of 20 horse-and-rider competitions contesting for the championship in the Equine Tack & Nutritionals Green Hunter 3’6” division. Ultimately, Jeff Gogul of Wilmington, Ohio won the top title with a total of 30 points to just narrowly overcome Kelley Farmer.

Gogul was aboard the nine-year-old warmblood mare Quintessa, who is owned by Roberts Stables, LLC. The pair earned first place in three of the five classes comprising the division which was enough to push them several points ahead of Farmer.

Super Chilled Keeps His Cool to Win $35k Commonwealth Grand Prix with Kevin Babington

Lexington, Ky. – May 13, 2018 – The final day of the Kentucky Spring Horse Show highlighted national jumper competition in the Rolex Stadium with the $35,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix, presented by AUDI of Lexington, and the $20,000 Under 25 Grand Prix, presented by Hollow Creek, to conclude the first week of competition in the spring series. Sunday’s featured victories were awarded to Kevin Babington (IRL) and Eugenio Garza (MEX) in their respective classes.

In the $35,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix, the first round saw 32 starters over Robert Murphy III’s 17-effort course, resulting in a 10 horse jump-off. With two mounts in the class, Babington increased his odds when he piloted both Super Chilled and Shorapur to clear rounds and into the jump-off. Babington and the first of his two rides, Debra Wycoff’s 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Super Chilled, scored a double-clear round in a time of 38.761 seconds to capture the gelding’s first grand prix win. An unfortunate rail with Shorapur LLC’s Hanoverian mare ended with the pair in seventh place.

Ramiro Quintana (ARG) rode Corento VH Dingenshof, the 9-year-old Zangersheide gelding owned by Smith Hogan LLC, to a double-clear finish in 40.217 seconds for the second place ribbon. Third place was awarded to Alex Granato (USA) aboard Moyer Farm LLC’s Beorn. Granato and the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding finished just behind Quintana with a time of 40.449 seconds.

Prior to the National Grand Prix, 25 riders challenged a very difficult 1.50m track in the $20,000 Under 25 Grand Prix, presented by Hollow Creek. Many of the athletes found trouble at the final combination, consisting of a triple combination to a liverpool oxer, and only the final two riders of the class cleared all 17 efforts fault-free with room to spare under the altered 88 second time allowed.

The head-to-head jump-off saw Sloan Hopson and her own Costa Rica VH Waterschoot Z put the pressure on as they flew to a clear second round in a time of 46.081 seconds. Eugenio Garza followed as the final rider in both the first and second rounds, knowing he had nothing to lose with longtime partner Bariano. Garza and the 17-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, owned by El Milagro, flew to the finish in 41.127 seconds to earn the victory. Garza concluded a successful first week at the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, hot off his third place finish in Saturday night’s $131,000 Hollow Creek Farm Grand Prix CSI3* with Armani SL Z. Hopson and her 10-year-old Zangersheide mare settled for the second place finish.

Lacey Gilbertson and Teddy Vlock ended the first round with just one time fault, but as the faster of the two, only 10 milliseconds over the time allowed, Gilbertson earned the third place ribbon, finishing in 88.018 seconds with Seabrook LLC’s Cobolt. Vlock received the fourth place prize.

Darragh Kenny also concluded a successful week, capturing the Leading Open Jumper Rider Award, sponsored by Envisian Products, with a total of 28 points based on wins in Thursday’s $35,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3* and Saturday’s $131,000 Hollow Creek Farm Grand Prix CSI3*.

Kelley Farmer and Jeff Gogul Claim Top Prizes in USHJA Hunter Derbies

Hunter competition continued in the Stonelea Ring with the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby and the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, which concluded competition at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show. At the end of the handy round of competition, it was Jeff Gogul and Just Ruffy that put in the best effort to take home top honors in the National Hunter Derby. Directly after, it was veteran rider Kelley Farmer and Aizlynn Radwanski’s Because who claimed the blue ribbon in the International Hunter Derby.

During the USHJA International Hunter Derby, 24 competitors tried for the champion ribbon, but no horse-and-rider combination could catch Farmer, who took home the top prize with a cumulative score of 392 after both rounds of competition. Farmer sat in a good position to claim the lead in some fashion, as she had entered with four different horses. Farmer and Because tackled the first round of competition with ease, despite some technical elements to the course including a wall fence that was placed in challenging location. During the handy round the pair secured the highest score of the day by utilizing all four of the high option fences in addition to accumulating 15 handy bonus points from the judges.

In second was another veteran hunter rider, Jennifer Alfano aboard her own Candid, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding. The pair rode to second place with a cumulative score of 382. Alfano also claimed third place with Sharon O’Neill’s Miss Lucy with a score of 380.50. The pair recently placed second in the $50,000 USHJA Pin Oak Charity Horse Show.

Earlier in the day, the USHJA National Hunter Derby took place in the Stonelea Ring as well. Athletes navigated over a 10-fence course that offered four high option fences. The top twelve riders were asked to return to complete a handy round where they demonstrated their capabilities over a trot fence and multiple options for tight turns.

Despite being a relatively new combination, Jeff Gogul and Just Ruffy dominated the first round of competition with a score of 91. They were the only competitors of the day to achieve a score in the nineties, which put them in a good position entering the handy round. After the handy round, the pair had a cumulative score of 180. Just Ruffy has been a reliable derby mount for Gogul, having won six derbies during the winter season at the World Equestrian Center in Tryon, North Carolina.

Second place was captured by Jordan Allen and Eclypse, a 10-year-old Hanoverian owned by Holly Orlando. The pair narrowly missed tying for first place with Gogul, acquiring a final cumulative score of 179. In a similar fashion, Alyssa Mansfield and Candor placed in a third with a score of 178 after two rounds of competition.

Jeff Gogul Increases National Derby Series Lead

Lexington, Ky. – Aug. 7, 2017 – Despite Great Britain’s Amanda Derbyshire and Sydney Shulman both earning 310 points during the Kentucky Summer Classic, Sharn Wordley continues to lead the 2017 Hagyard Challenge Series after the Kentucky Summer Classic came to a close.

The Kentucky Summer Classic also featured the sixth event of the series for the 2017 USHJA National Hunter Derby sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC, where Jeff Gogul continues to maintain his place at the top of the rankings.

Sydney Shulman, who earned the blue ribbon during Thursday’s $25,000 Hagyard of Lexington Grand Prix put her within 10-points of Pablo Barrios, who currently sits in third place and only 60 points behind Derbyshire who is second to Wordley. The New Zealand Olympian currently has 410 points.

The Kentucky Summer Classic also featured a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC. Jeff Gogul has earned the top spot in five of the six of the events so far and is dominating the standings with 1,200 points. Behind Gogul is David Beisel with 750 points is and Victoria Colvin with 475 points.

Luis Biraben Earns Hard-Fought Win in $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix

Lexington, Ky. – Aug. 5, 2017 – The conditions could not have been more perfect for an evening grand prix in the Rolex Stadium on Saturday night. The $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix saw 43 entries that competed over a course designed by Mexican course designer Florencio Hernandez. While the course did not initially seem daunting in size or technicality, only four riders returned for the jump-off. In the end, Luis Biraben of Argentina triumphed by completing the jump-off in a time of 43.737 seconds on his 8-year-old gelding Eres Tu. Hot on his heels was Martien Van Der Hoeven on Zerro Leone who gave a double-clear effort in 46.134 seconds. Young rider Kaely Tomeu finished third on Siboney Ranch’s Gentille and Amanda Derbyshire rounded out the top four on Luibanta BH, who is owned by Gochman Sporthorses LLC.

After walking the grand prix course, Biraben did not expect that he would have much difficulty qualifying more than one of his four mounts for the jump-off. Although the course was not overly high or posed any perplexing questions, rider after rider finished with a rail down or just over the time-allowed. Biraben credits his ability to ride his youngest mount, Eres Tu, to a clear round with the gelding’s heart, scope and sharp mind. Although Eres Tu recently turned only 8 years old, he completed each jump like a seasoned professional. For his winning efforts, Biraben was also presented with the Kentucky Summer Classic Leading Rider Award presented by Envisian Products, LLC. Biraben, who is a native of Argentina, recently moved to the United States and splits his time between Wellington, Florida and top shows on the East Coast.

Van Der Hoeven took the early lead in the grand prix class on his grey gelding, Zerro Leone. The pair was third in the original order-of-go and seemed to have no difficulty completing the course in the tight time-allowed. Van Der Hoeven has successfully competed Zerro Leone, who is owned by Augusta Pines Farm of Spring, Texas, in several major grand prix events including the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix at the Devon Horse Show as well as the Mary Rena Murphy Grand Prix, which is annually held during the Kentucky Spring Classic. He and Zerro Leone will make their next appearance together at the Hampton Classic Horse Show and the HITS $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties, New York.

Tomeu and Derbyshire were the only two female athletes to produce clear rounds in the Rolex Stadium. Each of them had a fast round but were unable to complete the short course without 4 faults. Derbyshire, who was second on Thursday night in the $25,000 Hagyard Classic Grand Prix, was also one of several riders to have multiple horses in the class, piloting three in all.

Jeff Gogul Maintains USHJA National Hunter Derby Winning Streak

On a beautiful afternoon at the Kentucky Summer Classic, Jeff Gogul continued to dominate the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC. During the first week of the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows, Gogul of Wilmington, Ohio won the derby aboard Cortese, a 7-year-old gelding owned by Stadium Horses LLC. He returned to the Stonelea Ring on Saturday to top the leaderboard with Quite Ruffy, a 15-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Pamela Kahn. The pair won the Cleveland Derby in July and placed tenth in last week’s derby at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show.

During the first round, Gogul and Quite Ruffy earned an 88 plus four additional points for taking all of the high options. Earlier in his career, Quite Ruffy was a grand prix jumper before transitioning to the hunter ring about four years ago.

Out of 49 entries in the week’s derby, only the top 12 combinations from the classic round were invited back to compete in the handy. In the handy round, Gogul and Quite Ruffy confidently tackled the trot jump and took advantage of the inside turns to earn a score of 92 after also taking all of the high options once again. Gogul is no stranger to the USHJA National Hunter Derby winner’s circle and he received a pair of F. Lli Fabbri tall boots in addition to his commemorative blue ribbon at the conclusion of Saturday’s competition with a final tally of 184 between both rounds.

David Beisel, who won the $50,000 Rood & Riddle Grand Prix aboard Ammeretto on July 30, enjoyed competing in the Stonelea Ring on Phyllis Harlow’s Lavish, a 12-year-old Westphalian gelding. In the first round of the derby, Beisel and Lavish earned a total of 90 after the four high options were calculated into the total. In the handy, they received a score of 93 with the four high options, and they were only one point behind Gogul and Quite Ruffy with a total of 183.

Sophie Gochman placed third on Gochman Sport Horse LLC’s Trumpet, a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, after earning an 85 in the classic round and a 91 in the handy.

Jeff Gogul Holds National Derby Series Top Spot

Lexington, Ky. – July 31, 2017 – New Zealand’s Sharn Wordley has taken over the lead in the 2017 Hagyard Challenge Series after earning ribbons in all three of this year’s show jumping events. During the Kentucky Summer Classic, Wordley took over the top spot with two top ten placings on Thursday’s $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic. The Kentucky Summer Horse Show also featured the fifth event of the series for the 2017 USHJA National Hunter Derby sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC, where Jeff Gogul continues to hold the lead in the standings.

Wordley’s consistent efforts in the Hagyard Challenge Series have him atop the leaderboard currently, but Thursday’s winner Pablo Barrios of Venezuela is in a close second, followed by David Beisel in the third place position after earning second and third in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show.

The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes held during the 2017 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series. The series concludes with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic held during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Following that exciting competition, the winner of the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus will be announced and presented with the cash prize by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

The Kentucky Summer Horse Show also featured the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows. Jeff Gogul has earned the top spot in three of the events to have a strong lead in the standings. David Beisel is currently ranked second, followed by Victoria Colvin.

The $30,000 World Equestrian Center/Kentucky Horse Shows Leading Rider Awards will include a $20,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the 11 classes that make up the 2017 World Equestrian Center/Kentucky Horse Shows series. The series-leading amateur and junior riders accumulating the most points will each receive a $5,000 cash prize. Riders will receive points only on their highest placed horse in each of the classes. The awards will be presented at the conclusion of the finale event during the WEC Invitational.

Jeff Gogul and Snowbird Soar to Victory in $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby

Lexington, Ky. – May 20, 2017 – Donning a commemorative blue ribbon on his hunt coat, Jeff Gogul earned another blue ribbon, piloting Sofia Roberts, LLC’s Snowbird to win the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby sponsored by the World Equestrian Center and Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC. Entering the ring as the final competitor over a multiple option course designed by Danny Moore, Gogul upset Victoria Colvin’s commanding lead aboard Caliber, with a score of 184.

Out of twenty-five entries in the Stonelea ring, only the top twelve combinations who scored an 80 or above in the classic round were invited back to vie for top honors and a pair of luxurious Fabbri boots. Gogul had an almost flawless first round aboard the 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Snowbird, receiving an 86 from the judges. He also received four additional bonus points for taking all the high options. The score was high enough to position Gogul in first place going into the handy round, but Winn Alden and World Affair were not far behind with an 89.

Heading into the handy round, Gogul had the advantage of going last in the order, but he knew they would have close competition. Victoria Colvin, who won the USHJA National Hunter Derby with Caliber during the Kentucky Spring Horse Show, was on track for another victory, rising to the top of the leaderboard with a high score of 92. As the final rider on course, Gogul was prepared with multiple plans after the trot jump at fence four. Calling upon the gelding’s bravery and natural jumping ability, Gogul guided Snowbird over all of the high options, earning them four extra bonus points. The pair received a score 90 from the judges, ensuring their victory in the class.

Snowbird, who has spent the winter showing indoors at the World Equestrian Center, only started showing outside last week at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show. During that first week under Kentucky’s blue skies, the pair placed fourth in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby. Gogul not only came into the ring prepared to win but he felt the added presence of his beloved friend, Ellen Veitch, whose memory was honored by spectators, riders and show organizers alike with ‘A Day in the Park.’ As he took his victory lap, blue braids standing out in Snowbird’s mane, Gogul reflected on what a perfect day it was to honor his friend who loved her home state of Kentucky and horses equally.

Victoria Colvin secured the second place honors with a score of 179 aboard Laura Karet’s Calibur. Winn Alden scored 178.5 aboard World Affair, owned by Southern Arches, LLC.

Wellington, FL (March 21, 2012) — Hunter trainer Jeff Gogul, who owns Flagship, LTD Farm in Ohio, rode Rosebud to the Championship in the First Year Green Working Hunter division during the seventh week of the 2012 Winter Equestrian Festival. The Sanctuary Equine Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation Center, a world-class rehab and conditioning facility located in Ocala, Florida, sponsors the class as well as the Second Year Green, Green Conformation and Regular Conformation classes.

Gogul has more than 20 years of training experience to his name, having consistently trained horses and students to local, region and national championships in the hunter, jumper and equitation rings. A USEF “r” Judge, Gogul is well known for his success in Wellington. He has been the trainer and rider of the Littlewood Circuit Champion Pre-Green Hunter, the co-trainer of the WEF Circuit Champion Modified Children’s Jumper and the trainer for multiple years of the WEF Circuit Champion 3’3” Adult Amateur. Gogul’s success in the Big Eq ranks are also proven, as his students have ridden away with the ASPCA Maclay National Championship, the Hunter Seat Medal National Championship and the National Children’s Medal Championship.
