Rylees Boy Remains atop Poll

American Quarter Horse Association, April 17, 2013 – This week’s AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Top 10 rankings look similar to the poll from a week ago, as Rylees Boy remains atop the same rivals. Pollsters had some minor opinion adjustments among the early season leaders, notably swapping PJ Chick In Black and Remembering Spence in the No. 2 and 3 positions, in narrow balloting.

Champion Rylees Boy, last year’s Champion of Champions (G1) winner and hero of February’s Los Alamitos Winter Championship (G1), garnered all first-place votes and 100 points in a unanimous showing. With key races in the division this weekend in the Bank of America Sam Houston Challenge Championship (G1) and Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby (R), expect some shuffling in next week’s poll.

The AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Top 10 rankings are presented each Wednesday of the racing season through year’s end. The national poll for 2-year-olds will debut later this spring as more juveniles embark on their racing careers.

Cheltenham Gold Cup, England

March 16th 2013 – Quarter of a million racing enthusiasts descended on Cheltenham last week, Britain’s premier jumping racecourse, for the four day Annual Festival, the pinnacle of the National Hunt racing season. Irish trainers launched their usual formidable challenge with 599 Irish trained entries and finished marginally ahead of Great Britain, winning 14 of the 27 races.

Festival week culminated in the much coveted Gold Cup, bringing together the ‘best of the best’ in a bid to win a slice of £550,000 prize money. Popular Irish jockey Barry Geraghty rode eight year old ‘Bobs Worth’, the 11/4 favourite to a gutsy seven length victory. In a bizarre sequence of events Barry bought the horse as a yearling for 16,500 Euros and owned him for two and a half years before selling him to his current trainer, Nicky Henderson. No one has ever bought, sold and then ridden the same horse to victory in The Gold Cup before.

Amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen made the running on the 2011 winner ‘Long Run’ (also trained by Henderson) over 22 fences, pushing stamina to the limits on the taxing 3m 2f trip. Champion jockey AP McCoy chased in hot pursuit on ‘Sir Des Champs’, eventually finishing second before ‘Bobs Worth’ drew clear on the uphill run in. The win gave Lambourn based trainer, Nicky Henderson, two reasons to celebrate, this being his 50th Festival win in a training career spanning 35 years.

On a day of highly charged emotions, Barry Geraghty dedicated his victory to amateur jockey and friend, J. T. McNamara, who was critically injured in a fall earlier in the week.

An In-Depth Look at the Recent Red Hills Horse Trials

Horse races and other kinds of equestrian competitions continue to make waves around the globe. If you have a favorite rider or horse, join the fun at www.Kentuckyderbybetting.com where Derby Day is one of the most exciting events. Just last year, over $130 million were wagered. Twelve hours away from the Kentucky Derby, the famous Red Hills can be found. Red Hills was created back in 1998 and since then, they have become one of the leading equestrian competitions in the United States.

Officially named the Red Hills International Horse Trials, this non-profit organization is in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. Each year, Red Hills Horse Trials that comply with USHJA rules are held. The annual trials feature exciting challenges on cross-country course. This course found in the center of a 120-acre park has recently been updated and intended for the 2013 participants.

Aside from the stadium course, there are also four dressage rings, the famous Red Hills Avenue of Shops, and different kind of exhibits and educational demos that every horse lover will adore. Just like the 2013 Red Hills Horse Trials, the 2012 event was also a huge success. Now, in this year’s event, winners may have already been declared, but many notable riders and horses left the audience in awe.

Highlights of the Red Hills Horse Trials

The competition began on the 8th of March and ended on the 10th. During the first day, the four dressage rings were all running at the same time. This made it hard for the spectators to keep an eye on what the riders and horses were all doing. Nevertheless, the decision was made and scores were given by the judges. Obtaining the first place in the CIC One Star Level with a final score of 39.90 were Julie Richards and her horse, San City.

Even as the dressage was still taking place, the CIC Two Stars and CIC Three Stars horses began show jumping. As it turned out, Marilyn Little bagged the first after dressage for RF Smoke on the Water and second place for her horse named RF Demeter. Both happened in the CIC3 division.

Top Horses Worth Mentioning

One of the horses that drew attention from the crowd was Madison Park, also known as Parker. Together with Kyle Carter, many people, especially the Canadians were pleased to see the horse competing once again. He suffered from major forelimb damage when he fell hard back in 2011, but still looked good throughout the competition.

Sinead Halpin’s horse, On Cue, is one of the youngest horses. However, she is already a force to be reckoned with. Not only is this mare bold and has wide range, she has the look of an extra-powerful galloping animal. Elizabeth New showed off her horse during the Red Hills Horse Trials and she definitely was not disappointed. Upper Crest D impressed everyone with his good looks and charm. He was extremely amazing on the cross country course, making a lot of people cheer for him. Perhaps in a few years, he might become one of the greats of Red Hills. Many noted his rhythm, ride-ability, and foot perfection specifically as he jumped through the second water.

Libby Head, who won the USEF National Young Rider Championship in 2011 as mentioned here, had a few issues with her horse, Sir Rockstar, during the dressage test. The little horse showed the crowd his inner pony, which interestingly made the whole trial even more exciting. Eventually, Sir Rockstar displayed the reason why he got his name. In both jumping stages, he was a natural, giving people the impression that he is one clever horse in cross-country course.

Nicolette Merie-Smith showed the spectators that her horse can really jump. This is why they grabbed the third place in the first rider division right after the horse dressage. In clear cross country course, however, the partners jumped their way to the finish line with the gold in their hands. They also won the first place in the show jumping rounds. Jennie Brannigan, one of our featured riders, certainly did not disappoint. She and her horse Indie grabbed the first place in the CIC Two Star division. However, it was Clayton Fredericks and Sorrento who primarily led the competition. Sadly, their advantage came to a quick, wet end when the horse fell at the first water. Nevertheless, Sorrento, the horse, was clearly a gem. He passed the dressage test with flying colors and enthralled the watchers with his show jumping.

Hundreds or even thousands of horse racing and other competitions take place all across the globe, but the Red Hills Horse Trials in Florida is one of the most anticipated. Showcasing beautiful and athletic horses, the whole event is not only fun but also promotes unity amongst equine lovers.

Lasix – An International Veterinary Perspective

Brian Stewart is the head of Equine Welfare and Veterinary Services for Racing Victoria, the primary authority overseeing horse racing in the region of Australia that includes Melbourne.  Formerly a private practitioner in Caulfield, Stewart was the head of Veterinary Regulation and International Liaison for the Hong Kong Jockey Club from 2002-2011. He has served as chairman of the International Group of Specialist Racing Veterinarians and in senior positions with the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, among other roles in the industry.

This week’s Breeders’ Cup Forum with Stewart, conducted via email, is a counterbalance to the views of Southern California racetrack practitioner Don Shields, a staunch advocate for the race-day use of the anti-bleeding diuretic furosemide, or Lasix, to treat exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage. Shields was the subject of last week’s Forum.

Eastex Handicap Highlights Remington Opening Weekend

Q-Racing Journal, March 7, 2013 – Remington Park opens its racing season March 8, and James Sills and Abel Flores’ A Toss Up carries high weight of 125 pounds when he returns from a winter’s rest in the $50,000 Eastex Handicap (G2) for older horses to highlight a stakes doubleheader on Sunday.

Supporting the Eastex Handicap is the $50,000 Mighty Deck Three Handicap for older Oklahoma-breds.

A Toss Up (Sweet First Down-Shake Cartel by Corona Cartel) was nominated to both races and his connections chose to take on open horses at 350 yards in the Eastex.

The 4-year-old gelding adores Remington Park with three wins and a pair of seconds from seven starts at the track. A year ago, trainer Eddie Willis sent him out to back-to-back stakes wins in the $246,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-bred Derby (R) and the $100,000 Sooner State Stakes (RG1), defeating state-breds in each race.

After a fifth-place finish in the Remington Park Championship (G1), he was a close second to JD Baccarat in the Higheasterjet Stakes (G3) at Ruidoso Downs. He then won his trials and qualified to both the Grade 1 All American and Texas Classic derbies.

Denis and Julie Schoenhofer’s champion First Klas Fred (Fredricksburg-She Flies First Klas by Strawfly Special) concluded his 2012 season with a win in the Classic Chevrolet Stakes (R) and a second in the B. F. Phillips Handicap (RG3). Each of those races was at Lone Star Park for Texas-breds.

First Klas Fred won the 2009 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) on his way to being honored as champion 2-year-old gelding.

John Lawless’ very consistent Eufaula Me (Okey Dokey Dale-Yawls Spreadn Rumors by Serious Rumors) makes his first start since taking the $94,400 Polk County Derby (R) at Prairie Meadows in October. The close second-place finisher in last year’s $135,000 Oklahoma Derby also boasts stakes wins at Prairie Meadows in the Jim Bader Futurity (R) and the Iowa Double Gold Derby (R).

Two racing champions will make their 2013 debuts on Friday at Sunland Park. Champion 2-year-old filly PJ Chick In Black and champion distance horse All About Larry will start in trial races for the West Texas Derby (G2) and Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge (G3), respectively.

PJ Chick In Black (Desirio-Eddie Jym by Corona Cocktail) races for Denny Bowen, Susie Taylor and Jack Smith Farms. She won five of six starts last year, including the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) and New Mexico Spring Futurity (RG2), on her way to championship honors. She will attempt to follow a similar route to a 3-year-old championship taken by 2010 champion 3-year-old gelding Double Down Special, who won the West Texas Derby (G3), then traveled to Ruidoso Downs where he won the Grade 1 Ruidoso and All American derbies. She races in the third of seven trials for the derby, which is the fifth race on the card.

All About Larry (Heza Motor Scooter-Come Hell Or Hiwater by Shoot Yeah) races for Diane Heath. Last year, the champion distance horse won six of eight starts, including the Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (G1). He races in the second of two trials to the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge, the second race on the card.
