JustWorld Returns to the American Gold Cup for Third Year as a Charity Partner

The JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show will take place on Sunday. Photo by Carrie Wirth.

North Salem, NY – September 10, 2013 – The 2013 American Gold Cup is right around the corner and soon Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY, will be filled with the top-tier athletes and excited onlookers. The American Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious competitions in the nation, and the organizers, Stadium Jumping and Old Salem Farm, are pleased to partner with JustWorld International as a charity partner. A number of very special JustWorld activities will be highlighted throughout the week, all of which will provide support for JustWorld’s mission to provide nutrition, health, hygiene, and education, as well as leadership and cultural development programs for impoverished children.

JustWorld International works throughout the international equestrian community, using its extensive networks to fund and sustain programs that provide basic needs to children with little opportunity to receive support from other sources. While many nonprofit organizations focus primarily on providing short-term assistance to developing countries, JustWorld’s goals are long-term, focusing its efforts on some of the poorest communities in countries such as Honduras, Cambodia, and Guatemala where public education is limited or inaccessible, threatening many children’s chances for productive lives.

The American Gold Cup will be another excellent opportunity for JustWorld to raise much needed funding for these tremendously worthwhile causes.

Thursday, September 12, JustWorld will kick off the week’s festivities with the Dyer Equestrian Trunk Show, which will take place on the Terrace overlooking the Grand Prix field from 1-5:30 pm. Dyer Equestrian and JustWorld International invite you to join them to shop the cause and celebrate the launch of the exclusive Dyer for JustWorld show shirt. A percentage of proceeds from all the sales during this event will be donated directly to JustWorld.

The excitement will continue, as competitors in the $200,000 American Gold Cup FEI CSI 4*-W World Cup Qualifier prepare to take center stage Sunday at 2 p.m. The Grand Prix athletes will be up for auction Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. The auction will conclude as soon as the first horse enters the ring Sunday afternoon, so participants must act fast! The JustWorld Calcutta will take place during the Grand Prix, allowing the fun to continue.

On Sunday, the JustWorld International signature Horseless Horse Show will take place prior to the start of the American Gold Cup on the Old Salem Grand Prix field at 11:30 a.m. There are classes for all ages with an entry fee of $15, with all proceeds benefitting JustWorld International. Entries can be made at the horse show office ahead of time or at the JustWorld table the morning of the event. The JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show allows children to experience show jumping like the top athletes on the Grand Prix field, only on foot.

The American Gold Cup will also mark the beginning of the JustWorld International GIVE 4 GOOD Campaign. The campaign will allow donors and supporters to identify with a cause they feel strongly about by supporting JustWorld’s crucial pillars. JustWorld gives the community the passion to come together, to unite for children across the globe. JustWorld International helps to provide impoverished children in Cambodia, Guatemala and Honduras with education, daily meals, medical care, and access to leadership and cultural development programs.

This campaign is the chance to put a smile on a child’s face, to take something that is so normal for everyday life, and fulfill their dreams. The JustWorld GIVE 4 GOOD campaign opens the door for that defining moment and offers compassionate supporters the opportunity to choose a cause that is close to their hearts.

JustWorld offers a dozen worthy causes from which to choose and although the choice may be difficult, the impact is overwhelming. You will have the opportunity to learn about the programs, projects and visions that are the pillars for a just world. With over 500 JustWorld Ambassadors in more than 40 countries, it is nothing short of passion that acts as the driving force for the GIVE 4 GOOD campaign.

JustWorld International’s Rider Ambassadors raise awareness and funds for their programs. Because of these Ambassadors, JustWorld supporters learn about the needs of others across the globe as they give thousands of children a leg up to a brighter future.

The Stars to Watch at the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W

Beezie Madden and Coral Reef Via Volo won the American Gold Cup in 2010. Photo by Kenneth Kraus.

Get Your Tickets for an International Show Jumping Showdown

North Salem, NY – September 5, 2013 – The American Gold Cup gets underway on Sept. 11, 2013, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 15, culminating with the iconic event, the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W , Presented by Suncast, on the grand prix field of Old Salem Farm. It will be an all-star event and will include an impressive list of show jumping’s who’s who, all focused on winning the American Gold Cup and bringing them one step closer to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup Finals in Lyon, France next spring.

The grass Grand Prix field at Old Salem Farm is known for its difficulty. FEI course designer Alan Wade is certain to build a challenging course that makes full use of the rolling terrain.

“Old Salem is known as the one of our country’s finest facilities,” said the 2012 American Gold Cup winner, Peter Leone, who won aboard Monica Carrera’s Lincourt Gino. “It is one of the most challenging fields in North America.”

Leone, who also won in 1988 with Threes and Sevens, will not compete this year but many international contenders will battle it out for the coveted Gold Cup.

Beezie Madden, the current World Cup Champion, is a logical choice to watch. She was fourth last year with Cortes C and named the Dyer Equestrian Leading Lady rider. Madden has won the American Gold Cup twice, first in 1989 with Northern Magic and again in 2010 with Coral Reef Via Volo. She holds the No.1 position in the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List and stands in second place in the Longines World Rankings. Madden is a three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist. In 2004, she was the first woman in the sport of show jumping to pass the $1 million mark in winnings.

Last year’s second-place finisher, Kent Farrington, could certainly get the job done. Farrington is coming off a big win of the World Cup Qualifier at the Hampton Classic. He won the $200,000 CN Performance Grand Prix and the $400,000 CN Reliability Grand Prix – both at Spruce Meadows. Farrington is currently ranked eighth on the Longines World Rankings and third in the Rolex/USEF Ranking List for the U.S. He has never won the American Gold Cup.

Westchester County’s own McLain Ward is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and is another mega-star to watch at the American Gold Cup. Ward was third at last year’s Gold Cup with the impressive Wurtemburger gray gelding, Antares F. He was fifth at the 2013 World Cup Finals and is currently ranked in fifth place on the Rolex/USEF Ranking List. Ward has said that an American Gold Cup win is something that has eluded him and that he hopes to achieve.

“It’s one of the great competitions of our country,” said Ward about the Gold Cup. Expect to see a spectacular effort from the ever-determined Ward.

Another athlete to watch is Pan American Games Gold Medalist Christine McCrea, who won the Friday American Gold Cup Qualifier in 2012. She won the Gold Cup in 2006 with Vegas and is currently ranked seventh on the Rolex/USEF Ranking List. McCrea has had a fantastic summer competition season with big grand prix wins at HITS Saugerties, Spruce Meadows and Old Salem.

Confirmed American Gold Cup competitor Margie Engle is one of the most successful show jumping athletes of all time. She has over 200 Grand Prix wins under her belt, has been named AGA Rider of the Year 10 times, has been on more than 20 winning Nations Cup teams and was the 1991 AHSA Equestrian of the Year.  Engle is another good bet in the field of skilled contenders.

The 2013 American Gold Cup list of those confirmed to compete also includes young talent Katie Dinan and Brianne Goutal. Fresh from major Grand Prix wins this summer are Pablo Barrios, Charlie Jayne, Todd Minikus, Paul O’Shea, Leslie Howard and more. It should make for a show jumping event for the record books.

NBC Sports Network will broadcast the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W, Presented by Suncast the following week on Sunday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. EST.

Vaulting Visions to Hold Clinic and Perform at the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W

Vaulting Visions, the 2012 USEF/AVA Team National Champions, will perform at the American Gold Cup on Saturday and Sunday and hold a vaulting clinic on Saturday. Photo by Lynne Owen VaultingPhotos.com.

North Salem, NY – August 30, 2013 – The 2012 U.S. National Championship Equestrian Vaulting Team, based out of Vaulting Visions in Swedesboro, NJ, will give a demonstration at the American Gold Cup before the $50,000 Hermes Classic on Saturday, Sept. 14 and the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W, Presented by Suncast, on Sunday, Sept. 15. They will perform their National Championship Team routine. Several up-and-coming young members will also present their winning individual routines.

In addition, the well-regarded vaulting organization will offer a clinic from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, September 14.

“The purpose of the clinic is to introduce people to the sport of vaulting and to help them understand that, while it looks extremely challenging and risky, it is actually a very safe and easy sport to get into at any level,” said Alison Gieschen, who founded the club twenty years ago and serves as its coach and horse trainer.

“Young children up to older adults can participate in the sport,” Gieschen said. “We teach people drills on a stationary barrel and then they can progress to the horse, if they have some riding or gymnastics background. Even people who have never been on a horse in their whole life can do these exercises, then immediately transfer to the horse.”

The clinic will be an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to try vaulting. Clinic participants are encouraged to wear stretchy pants to allow for freedom of movement and soft-soled shoes. If they don’t have soft-soled shoes they may wear socks.

“It depends on their fear factor, however; participants are often able in one session to sit on a horse at a walk, trot and canter in all directions – facing forward, backwards, sideways and even up on their knees,” Gieschen said. “It depends on the person and their comfort level.”

Gieschen has done hundreds of clinics for different types of people, riding groups and non-riding groups, and has very safe teaching processes based on a person’s ability level.

“We just had a group of orphans from Philadelphia, children who have not been off the streets of Philadelphia,” she said. “By the end of the mini-clinic, they were doing things at the canter, and they had never been around horses.”

Gieschen’s 23-year-old daughter Katie has been vaulting since she was a small child. She is currently ranked 11th in the nation.

According to Gieschen, the horses are the most important team members of a vaulting squad. They have to love children, be accepting and have smooth gaits.

“They need three important qualities: temperament, temperament, temperament,” Gieschen said. “It doesn’t matter what size, shape, breed they are. They have to enjoy what they do. We probably try out nearly 50 horses for every one that becomes a vaulting horse.”

Gieschen explained that winning the national title was a major accomplishment for the Vaulting Visions troupe. “It was the first time an east coast team has won the national title in team,” she said. “We are a tiny club from New Jersey and we compete against California teams that do vaulting on a professional level. I’m a teacher and I do this part-time. My kids are not professional athletes; they just come out and work really hard at it.”

The Vaulting Visions clinic at the American Gold Cup is open to 10-15 participants. Vaulting Visions happily accepts donations from participants to keep the club operating. To register for the clinic, email Alison Gieschen at: alison_gieschen@yahoo.com and include your name, age, and contact information.

American Gold Cup Adds New Competitions, Increased Prize Money and World-Ranking Points

North Salem, NY – June 4, 2013 – The American Gold Cup organizers, Stadium Jumping and Old Salem Farm, are pleased to announce three major changes to the 2013 schedule of events.  Competitors will notice increased prize money and the addition of a fourth World-Ranking Class. Slated for Thursday, September 12, 2013, the 1.45m Jumper Class will now be a sanctioned FEI ranking event with $33,000 in prize money.  On Saturday, September 14, the 1.50m Jumper Classic will be a $50,000 class, raised from its $35,000 level in 2012. Rounding out the prestigious line up of competitions will be the featured competition on September 14, the ASPCA Maclay Zone 2 Regional Finals.

This year, the exciting, technically challenging and highly-contested $200,000 American Gold Cup Grand Prix will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013. Organizers have elected to honor the tradition and continue to offer no entry fees for qualified horse and rider combinations. The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) has designated the $200,000 American Gold Cup Grand Prix as a CSI 4*-W World Cup Qualifier, making the event of utmost importance for riders aspiring to compete at the 2014 World Cup Finals to be held in Lyon, France.

“The American Gold Cup holds a very special place in the sport of Show Jumping in North America,” said Michael Morrissey, president of Stadium Jumping. “As an organizer it is truly rewarding to have the opportunity to offer more to our riders, fans and supporters and to create a truly marquee, internationally recognized show jumping event that North America can be proud to call its own.”

“The pairing of the Gold Cup and Old Salem Farm is truly the best of all worlds for competitors, fans and most importantly the horses,” noted Frank Madden, trainer at Old Salem Farm. “Old Salem Farm has created a world-class, incredibly horse-friendly venue and the Stadium Jumping team delivers well-organized and well-thought out competition management. Together, they create an exceptional and well-rounded event.”

“It’s one of the great competitions of our country,” said two-time Olympic Gold Medalist McLain Ward, who admits the Gold Cup is a competition whose trophy has eluded him. “We believe what’s been done at Old Salem Farm in terms of the renovations and improvements is pretty special.”

Also new this year at the 2013 American Gold Cup, the ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Regional Finals for Zone 2 will be held on Saturday in the Old Salem Farm indoor arena. The competitive class will be comprised of Zone 2’s top junior riders. They will compete for the opportunity to qualify for the prestigious ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Finals at the Alltech National Horse Show in Lexington, KY, in early November.

“Old Salem Farm is a great venue for the Maclay Regionals,” said Mason Phelps Jr., President of the National Horse Show Association. “Holding the highly competitive Zone 2 Regionals during the coveted American Gold Cup will provide the perfect backdrop and take the event to a whole new level. The National Horse Show Association is very pleased with this development.”

Dyer Equestrian Leading Lady Rider Award at American Gold Cup Goes to Olympian Beezie Madden

LeeAnne Colamarino and Erin Krasner award Beezie Madden the Dyer Equestrian Leading Lady Rider Award. Photo by Parker/Russell-The Book LLC

North Salem, NY – September 28, 2012 – Beezie Madden earned the Dyer Equestrian Leading Lady Rider Award at the American Gold Cup. With Cortes “C,” Madden clinched the award by earning fourth place in both the $50,000 American Gold Cup Qualifier and another fourth place prize in the $200,000 American Gold Cup.

Madden certainly deserves the honors. She is a three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist. She is the winner of multiple Grand Prix events, including the American Gold Cup. In 2004, Madden was the first woman in the sport of show jumping to pass the one million dollar mark in winnings.

Equestrian LLC, a retailer of premium equestrian apparel for women and children, introduces a fresh, fashion forward approach to the equestrian market while maintaining the heritage that defines equestrian sport. The name Dyer was inspired by the founders’ first horses, Dylan and Ernie. It was those first horses that brought Dyer’s founders, LeeAnne Colamarino and Erin Krasner, together and cultivated their love of equestrian sport and equestrian fashions. Dyer offers high fashion garments that focus on fit, cutting edge fabric technologies and strategically placed details designed to enhance the functionality of the garment.

North Salem, NY – September 27, 2012 – Parlanti Custom Riding Boots was pleased to present the American Gold Cup Leading Rider Award to Reed Kessler. The award honors included a pair of boots from the popular Parlanti Passion line of products.

Reed Kessler is more than deserving of accolades and this special award at the American Gold Cup. Kessler, at only 18 years old, was the youngest person in show jumping history to compete in the Olympic Games when she participated in the 2012 Olympic Games aboard her mare Cylana. With nearly 40 show jumping wins since 2009, including the US Show Jumping National Championship, Kessler is one of the most important talents in the show jumping arena today.

At the American Gold Cup Kessler earned a fourth place prize in the $7,500 1.40 and a fifth place in the $35,000 Double H Farm Jumper Championship both aboard Onisha and second place in the $50,000 American Gold Cup Qualifier and 10th in the $200,000 American Gold Cup riding Mika.

Peter Leone and Lincourt Gino Make History at the American Gold Cup

On Friday Leone and Gino were third in the $50,000 American Gold Cup Qualifier. Photo by Julien Lecomte

Wellington, FL – September 24, 2012 – Peter Leone and Monica Carrera’s Lincourt Gino received a huge ovation from the spectators as the only horse and rider team to go double clear around Steve Stephen’s challenging long and short tracks around the rolling terrain of the Old Salem Grand Prix field in the American Gold Cup. It was Leone’s second American Gold Cup win; in 1988 he won the prize aboard the amazing American Quarter Horse, Threes and Sevens.

Leone’s clean jump-off round (44.050 seconds) placed him ahead of Kent Farrington, who came in second riding Voyeur with a time of 41.630 seconds with four faults in the second round. McLain Ward, riding Antares F, claimed third place with a time of 42.00 seconds with four faults in round two, while Beezie Madden, riding Cortes C, earned the fourth place ribbon with a time of 43.140 seconds, also with four faults in the jump-off.

“It felt good to be in the jump-off with three of the best riders in America, three of the best riders in the world,” said Leone.

American Gold Cup Wrap-up: $200,000 AGC Title Goes to Peter Leone and Lincourt Gino

North Salem, NY — September 22, 2012 — Peter Leone, aboard Lincourt Gino, sailed to the win as the only double clear horse and rider combination in the starting field of 29 at the $200,000 American Gold Cup at Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY, on Sunday, Sept. 16.

Leone’s clean round (44.050 seconds) placed him ahead of Kent Farrington, who came in second riding Voyeur with a time of 41.630 seconds with four faults in the second round. McLain Ward, riding Antares F, claimed third place with a time of 42.00 seconds with four faults in round two, while Beezie Madden, riding Cortes C, earned the fourth place ribbon with a time of 43.140 seconds, also with four faults in the jump-off.

Leone, an Olympic silver medalist, rode third in the jump-off and said his strategy was to see how it unfolded as Madden and Farrington took to the course before him and how he would use that information to keep Ward, the fourth rider, at bay.
