Gulf Coast Winter Classic Week IV

What a great week to be on the Gulf Coast! We were lucky with the weather that stayed north of us and we had a jammed pack week of special events.  This week has always been known as our “celebration of hunters”.  This week also for the past few years was also a World Champion Rider event, but it was sad to have to tell so many exhibitors that the governing body over WCHR felt that this event was not worthy.  Maybe next year the vote will be different.

We started this week streaming with Show Net and we had about 300 watching our USHJA International Hunter Derby.  It seems to be a big success for everyone.

On Thursday afternoon we had the jog for 39 horses for our USHJA International Hunter Derby followed by the riders meeting and drawing the order of go along with huge pile of sandwiches, brownies and soda and beer.

The following morning in the Sponsor Tent, Adequan sponsored a breakfast for the exhibitors and guests.  Great breakfast, thank you Caroline Hogan.  The class was held on the grass Grand Prix field which is 400 x 450.  Allen Rheinheimer created a challenge for the Jr exhibitors to see who could draw the best course for the derby.  Allen supplied the contestants with an outline of the ring and he had 10  entries.  He along with our “staff of course designers” reviewed all of the entries and chose the entry created by Sarah Clifton Yandell who rides with Dave Pelligrini.   Not only did she supply the basis for the course to be built, she took to the field with the course designers and crew to build her course.   This contest was sponsored by Showtime Jump Company and Sarah was able to pick any jump as her prize.  She chose a very large long jump.  This was a great way to get more than just the top riders involved with this very special class.  Congrats Sarah!  And thanks Allen.

The International Hunter Derby was won by Triompf, Sarah Peterson, owner and ridden by Holly Shepherd.   Triompf has been also doing great in all of our grand prix classes this winter in Pensacola and Gulfport.  Congrats Sarah and Holly!  Great Class.
