Deauville, France – April 9, 2014 – As the U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage riders prepare for the upcoming Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France, a few American athletes have headed overseas where they are competing among the best in the para-dressage world. Those USA riders include two-time Paralympian and 2010 WEG rider Rebecca Hart (Grade II), Margaret McIntosh (Grade Ib), and 2010 WEG Individual rider and 2012 London Paralympic U.S. Team reserve rider Mary Jordan (Grade IV).

Rebecca Hart (USA) is riding the 12-year-old Danish Mare Schroeters Romani, recently purchased from Straight Horse in Denmark in partnership with Hart’s family, Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel. Margaret McIntosh (USA) is riding her own Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar Mare Rio Rio, who is 8 years of age. Mary Jordan of Wells, Maine is riding a new mount Rubicon 75, owned by Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center of Loxahatchee, Florida and formally owned and ridden by Catherine Haddad Staller of International Dressage.

Over the April 4-6, 2014 weekend, Hart and McIntosh both competed at the CPEDI3* in Deauville, France. All three riders plan on attending the Moorsele, Belgium CPEDI3*, scheduled April 25-27, 2014, and the 51st “Maimarkt-Turnier” CPEDI3* in Mannheim, Germany, scheduled May 2-6, 2014.

Final US Para-Dressage World Equestrian Games Qualifier Completed at Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*

Rancho Murieta, California – April 7, 2014 – The pressure was on at the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* for many U.S. para-dressage athletes looking to qualify for the World Equestrian Games. From April 4-6, 2014, riders from Grade Ia, II, III, and IV competed for top scores in the international arena at the Murieta Equestrian Center. The FEI ground jury included Alison King (HK) FEI 4*, David Schmutz (USA) FEI 4*, Kathy Amos-Jacob (FRA) FEI 4*. After a top showing just weeks prior at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival CPEDI3* in Wellington, Florida, riders were ready to give it their all in their final qualifier held in the United States for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Selection Trial and U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship. With all U.S. events completed there are 14 U.S. riders qualified for the selection trials including a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Many of these riders will also compete at the Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championships, which coincide with the trials.

Para-Dressage Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt is looking forward to the June 2014 trials because he has spent the year watching, encouraging, and applauding the many talented U.S. horse and rider combinations. The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* was his last opportunity to see how each rider has progressed. Handt commented, “The U.S. para-dressage team had a great showing at this CPEDI3*. Our new riders performed well in their first CPEDI and everyone earned their qualifying scores for the trials. The seasoned riders had quality rides creating a great outlook for the future. There were small technical errors in a few tests but those should be easily ironed out. All of the riders look forward to their next performance at selection trials for the 2014 WEG. Overall, the show was a great success and we are thankful to the entire show for the great support of our para-dressage riders. We are also grateful to our sponsors for the team dinner that was provided.”

2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) U.S. rider Susan Treabess, Grade IV, understands the position each of the athletes are in right now. Almost one year ago, Winters, California equestrian and trainer Susan Treabess debuted the now 9-year-old Pura Raza Espanol Kamiakin, owned by Scott and Katie Hill. Treabess was happy about the duo’s first international show but was looking forward to preparing for 2014. As a 2010 WEG U.S. rider Treabess knows what it takes to get to that arena in Normandy, France. At the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*, Treabess and Kamiakin brought their best and earned solid team and individual scores. On the final day of competition Treabess earned an exciting 72.417% freestyle score. Although riders must qualify with the team or individual score, the freestyle scores will be taken into account for the selection trials.

Treabess explained, “In 2010, my freestyle score was what put me over the top for WEG. For some reason the freestyle really clicks with my horses and me. Of course I am working hard on the other tests but the freestyle has always been my strongest. It was the first time we rode this freestyle and we received some great feedback to work on before Gladstone.”

She continued, “This show was a bit of an experiment for Kam and [me]. After our one CPEDI in June 2013 we worked this last year on gate development. We have been working hard, training, showing, and we decided to try a few things at this show. It was great to get that perspective from the judges before selection trials. We took some risks that paid off and some that didn’t.”

This show was the first time Treabess was able to work with the new Para-Dressage Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt. She commented, “You never know with a new coach and new system but I have to say that Kai wants the same thing we do which is to become more competitive as a team. He knows his job is to make this team in a solid team and that will take some time. On a coaching level I appreciated his support this weekend. He recognized what Dennis and I have been working on, he knows we are doing everything we can, he reinforced our training this weekend and had that open communication we desire from a Chef d’Equipe. I am excited for what the future holds.”

For fellow Grade IV rider Holly Bergay, this show was a chance to step back into the international arena. In 2010 Bergay was named to the World Equestrian Games U.S. team. Unfortunately lameness in her mount would cause her to withdraw from the competition. Since that time period Bergay has been actively competing and topping the ranks in the small tour for para-dressage. The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* was Bergay’s opportunity to qualify once again for the 2014 World Equestrian Games. The judges were impressed with the duo of Bergay and Rubino Bellissimo who earned the top score of the competition of a 73.083% in their freestyle. Everyone was excited to see the accomplished para-dressage athlete back in the spotlight and earning top ranking international scores.

Rounding out the Grade IV tests was brand new para-dressage rider Elizabeth Traband and Ucari, owned by Helene Bergstrom. Just weeks prior, Traband and her mount were in Wellington, Florida at their first CPEDI3*. Traband, a talented hunter/jumper athlete, transitioned into the para-dressage world and was immediately a force to be reckoned with. After a near miss of a WEG qualification score in Florida, Traband packed her bags and traveled to Rancho Murieta in hopes of obtaining a qualifying score for the WEG and some important feedback from the ground jury. Traband and Ucari will now head back to the east coast where they will rendezvous with the 13 other U.S. para-dressage riders qualified for the WEG selection trials and national championships.

Following Traband’s trek across the country, Kate Shoemaker left Wellington, Florida, and headed to the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*. Shoemaker brought her own Pacifec M to the competition and their hard work paid off when they earned their qualification score. The para-dressage world takes commitment, hard work, and sacrifices. For both Traband and Shoemaker the trip to California may have seemed long but in the end, it was worth the miles. From the value of the feedback from the FEI 4* judge’s to the international show exposure, the experience was immeasurable.

Ashleigh Flores-Simmons, Grade II rider, can understand how these riders felt as they approached X on the first day. Only 9 months ago, she was trotting down centerline with a registered Arabian at her first CPEDI3*. Not even a full year later and Flores-Simmons has become the complete para-dressage package.

“She worked her tail off this year,” commented Flores-Simmons’ mentor and national coach Susan Treabess. “We pushed her and pushed her and she really stepped up to the plate this weekend. It was emotionally challenging but the judges gave her fantastic feedback. Verite and Ashleigh make a beautiful pair and we were all ecstatic about where she is right now. I know this partnership has a really strong future.”

Winterhaven Dressage and Horsemanship, owned by Susan Treabess, has given Flores-Simmons a borrowed horse sponsorship. This relationship has allowed Flores-Simmons and Treabess to work together on developing Flores-Simmons as an international athlete. It has also provided Flores-Simmons the opportunity to work with international renowned dressage trainer Dennis Callin.

Flores-Simmons was excited about her performance. She expressed, “This was an amazing weekend and I am so thankful for this opportunity. Verite and I had a great first CPEDI together and she was absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in the ring and I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish this weekend. I would like to thank Dennis Callin and Susan Treabess for their great coaching and support; without them this would definitely not be possible. I would also like to thank Dana Williams for providing me with the opportunity to ride such an awesome horse and for all of her help and support. Also, without the support of the whole Winterhaven Dressage and Horsemanship team this would not be possible. To all of the friends and family that support Verite, I am greatly appreciative for all that they do and for the endless encouragement they provide. In addition, I want to thank USPEA and everyone who played a part in making this event possible and ensured it ran smoothly. I really valued the opportunity to receive feedback from the judges and I appreciated the time they took to offer their insights so that we can improve. I can’t wait for what the future holds.”

Competing against Flores-Simmons in Grade II was Dr. Deborah Stanitski and her own Tiramisu. Stanitski, like Traband and Shoemaker, shipped out of Florida and headed to California in search of a qualification score and a chance to ride at another CPEDI3*. The trip paid off when Stanitski earned the scores she needed and the welcome feedback she desired.

Earning a clean sweep in the Grade Ia competition was wounded U.S. Air Force veteran Derrick Perkins and Kai Handt’s NTEC Hans. The pair had an exciting showing at the Adequan Global Dressage CPEDI3* in Florida and they are continuing to develop their partnership together. Perkins noted, “This was a real learning experience. Each test I made improvements and my final ride was my best.”

Perkins has been working with Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt over the last year and he has already become a top ranking U.S. Grade Ia athlete.

Perkins and each of the qualified athletes will head to Gladstone, New Jersey in June where they will compete at the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Selection Trials for the U.S. Team.

Treabess remarked, “I am looking forward to New Jersey. It is going to be competitive. On one hand it’s nerve racking because it is a lot of time and money and you really want to make the team, and if you don’t it’s disappointing. But it’s so exciting for U.S. para-dressage. We are going to have a really tight competition, which is great for us as a country. The competition is going to be day to day and no one will know who is on that team till that final freestyle and ranking calculation.”

US Para-Dressage Athletes Take Home Multiple Blue Ribbons and WEG Qualifying Scores at AGDF CPEDI3*

Canadian Para-Dressage Team tops the team competition only points ahead of the United States of America while Lauren Barwick, Grade II, of Canada earned the overall high-point award donated by Polo Gear

Wellington, Florida – March 17, 2014 – Over three days, March 14-16, 2014, para-dressage athletes from the U.S. and Canada vied for multiple accolades at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival 10 CPEDI3* in Wellington, Florida. For the United States riders this CPEDI3* was the second to last opportunity located in the U.S. to qualify for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG). For developing athletes this international show was an educational experience and a chance to gain remarks from the FEI Ground Jury. Those judges included Kjell Myhre (NOR), Marc Urban (BEL), and Kristi Wysocki (USA). The first day, March 14, was the Team Test competition followed by the Individual Test on March 15. Those two scores were combined for each of the four team members and the lowest score was dropped for a team final score. U.S. Team members, led by Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt, included Roxanne Trunnell and Nice Touch (Grade Ia); Rebecca Hart and Schroeters Romani (Grade II); Angela Peavy and Lancelot Warrior (Grade III); and Mary Jordan and Sebastian (Grade IV). Led by Chef d’ Equipe Elizabeth Quigg, Canada teammates included Robyn Andrews and Fancianna (Grade Ia); Ashley Gowanlock and Collegiate Sweet Leilani (Grade Ib); Lauren Barwick and Ferdonia 2 (Grade II); and Jody Schloss and Inspector Rebus (Grade Ia). In the final team score the Canadian team pulled ahead with a 418.803 point total. That was 8 points above the USA who earned a 410.536. Despite the team placing, multiple U.S. Para-Dressage riders had exceptional tests overall earning first place in their respective Grades and earning some of their best personal scores in history.

U.S. Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt explained, “I think we had an excellent showing at this horse show considering we had a bunch of very new riders participating in their first CPEDI3*. I think it’s the first time we scored that many 70s throughout the whole show and in each grade. I am extremely pleased with our riders and our new talent is turning out to be exceptional.”

He continued, “In the future these riders just need to solidify their performances. With everything being so new, some of these riders had some small mistakes that will need to be ironed out in the future. I met with each of their trainers and we talked about items each rider needs to work on. The big picture is great but it’s the small things that make us lose points. I think everyone got a really good idea from the judges’ remarks so next time around these things will be straightened out so we further keep improving our scores.”

For Canada, “This was a weekend of preparation,” noted Chef d’Equipe Elizabeth Quigg. This was the first time we were all together again this year. Our team is really cohesive and everybody is really working as a team. We are looking forward to the new season and our riders are pumped and looking forward to the rest of the year.”

U.S. rider Roxanne Trunnell, Grade Ia, is also looking forward to the second half of 2014. During the AGDF CPEDI3* Trunnell and her own Nice Touch obtained the top score in Grade Ia over two of the three days. Only one year ago Trunnell entered her first CPEDI3* and 12 months later she earned over a 70% in both the team and individual test. Trunnell noted, “I enjoyed representing the team this weekend. I also enjoyed working with both of my horses. Touché was wonderful in her tests and her free walk was superb. In only one year she has gained a lot of muscle, conditioning, and she has really improved.” Trunnell has owned Nice Touch for 11 years and used to show her in Region 6 Prix St. George.

Trunnell’s competition included Canadians Jody Schloss and Inspector Rebus, Robyn Andrews and Fancianna, and U.S. Air Force Wounded Veteran Derrick Perkins with horse NTEC Hans. This was Perkins’ first international para-dressage event and he earned his 2014 WEG qualifying score during the team test. “For my first time it felt good. We worked out a few kinks before competition and it ended up being great. I definitely had butterflies but Hans was wonderful.”

In Grade Ib Canadian Ashley Gowanlock and Collegiate Sweet Leilani, owned by Kendalyne Overway, and rider Sydney Collier (USA) were battling it out for first place.

Gowanlock was happy with her rides earning the top score in the Grade Ib team test and freestyle test. She recalled, “This weekend was fantastic considering I have only been riding Leilani for a month. I am over the moon happy and so grateful to my whole team and all the coaches that have helped me on the fly. I am also grateful to the owner Kendalyne for giving a complete stranger her horse and saying go for it. I couldn’t be happier. Now Leilani is getting on an airplane and going to Europe.”

Sydney Collier (USA) was riding two new mounts in the competition. “I thought this weekend was super successful for my first time in the show ring with both of these horses. I am thrilled; of course there are always more things to work on. That is what I love about dressage. There is always something to tweak or perfect for the next day. I enjoyed this entire weekend and could not have done it without the help of my coach Wes Dunham and our Kai Handt.” Collier left the Wellington CPEDI3* earning her WEG qualifying score on both NTEC Cuplee, owned by Patricia Mendenhall. and Willi Wesley, owned by Victoria Dugan.

In Grade II Lauren Barwick (CAN) and Ferdonia 2 dominated the competition. Barwick earned the overall high-point rider award donated by Polo Gear with an average score of 72.468%. This was the first time in two years that Ferdonia 2 and Barwick were partners in the international arena. “I was pleased to have Ferdonia back in the international competition arena after our break,” explained Barwick. “Our motto is ‘get your good better and your better best’ and that is what we did this weekend. We started her off slow, saw what she was like in the arena, built up her confidence, pushed her some more and then rode our freestyle. It was our first time riding the freestyle so the music was off but the mandatory movements were bang on. I was really thrilled with her performance and how the judges received her performance. I was also really pleased with my teammate Ashley Gowanlock; she’s only had four weeks on Leilani and has done quite well. As a team we are small yet our riders are all capable of riding great accurate tests.  That is what our strength is. We also have a great coaching staff and amazing team personnel which all help us get to the ring and be successful.”

By next week the entire Canadian Team and their horses will head off to Europe to compete in the CPEDI3* events overseas. The team plans on staying within Europe through the 2014 WEG in Normandy, France.

Also heading to Europe is USA Grade II competitor and fellow two-time Paralympian Rebecca Hart. Hart rode her brand new mount Schroeters Romani who was recently purchased from Straight Horse in Denmark. Although her team test became a learning experience, Hart came back to earn a 70.476% in the Individual Test and a 72.667% in her Freestyle. Hart commented, “I was very pleased with how the Individual and Freestyle went. We were a little disappointed with the first day, but we took it as an educational experience, learned from it and she came out listening and focused. We then used it to create the performance we were hoping for.”

Schroeters Romani is used to the able-bodied long arena so Hart has been working with her on perfecting her short arena skills. Hart noted, “We are working on her with the short arena and getting it to flow; she is really coming along nicely. I am looking forward to flying to Europe in a week and doing the two CPEDIs. We are doing Moorsele CPEDI3* in Belgium and Deauville in France. It will be nice to be in that atmosphere and be in the European competition. Romani is a very powerful horse but she is smart, savvy, uses her power efficiently and works with you, not against you. I was so thankful this weekend to my coach Missy Ransehousen, my family, and everyone who helped with the purchase of Romani including Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel.”

She continued, “I also want to thank the management, sponsors and volunteers who put this venue together because it has been fantastic. They are putting on an able-bodied CDI in addition to our CDI at the same time. Management has been fantastic and I am thankful to all of the different sponsors who are a part of this show.”

In Grade III 17-year-old Angela Peavy topped the competition winning multiple blue accolades with horses Ozzy Cooper and Lancelot Warrior, both owned by Rebecca Reno. On the final day of competition Angela earned a 72.750% with 8-year-old Ozzy Cooper and a 71.583% with Lancelot Warrior. Peavy commented, “This show was a good start with my new horses. I am looking forward to our future together and working on improving certain aspects of our rides.” Peavy rides with Heather Blitz who has helped Peavy learn the ins and outs of the international experience.

With many new partnerships being established at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, Grade IV athlete and 2010 WEG rider Mary Jordan has been perfecting her rides with her own Sebastian. “I really feel a true partnership with Sebastian,” smiled Jordan. “My horse has never looked or felt better in his life. He’s getting more expressive, has a wonderful attitude and is a joy to ride. I am really looking forward to this time before selection trials to continue building upon what we have been working on all winter. I want to max out the extensions and make each test really pretty now. Pre-season I was riding with Michael Poulin at the Pineland Equestrian Center but I have made a wonderful connection with Jim Koford who I have known for 20 years. Jim has been absolutely wonderful. I have learned so much from him and he has really been pushing me to ride better. This whole season has been about honing our fitness and bringing out the best in Sebastian. Our next step will be going to Europe, potentially with a new horse. I have signed up for three shows including Deauville, France; Moorsele, Belgium; and Mannheim, Germany. I am taking it to the next level. I just want to get out in front of the panels. Actively competing all of the time is making a huge difference because I feel really relaxed; I enjoy showing and I love getting out there and doing it.”

For many U.S. para-dressage athletes their next international show is in California where the final U.S. CPEDI3* event is occurring. The Golden State Dressage CPEDI3* in Rancho Murieta, scheduled April 3-6, 2014, will be the final qualifying event for the USEF 2014 Para-Dressage Selection Trials for the WEG. Finally, Para-Dressage riders will reconvene June 2-5 in Gladstone, NJ, for the 2014 Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and WEG Selection Trial before preparing the team for Normandy, France.

Para-Dressage Athletes Prepare for Upcoming CPEDI3* at AGDF and Welcome Back to White Fences

Wellington, FL – March 2, 2014 – With only a few weeks left before the Adequan Global Dressage Festival 10 CPEDI3* scheduled March 12-16, 2014, para-dressage athletes have been working hard preparing their mounts for competition. Over two weekends February 20-23 and February 28 – March 2, multiple para-equestrian riders showcased their new partnerships at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) 7 and 8 in Wellington and at the Welcome Back to White Fences Show in Loxahatchee, FL February 20-23. U.S. riders included Rebecca Hart, Ellie Brimmer, Elle Woolley, Deborah Stanitski, Angela Peavy and Canadians Jody Schloss and Robyn Andrews. For many of those riders the weekend shows were the first time riders debuted their new horse/rider combinations. There are only two U.S. CPEDI3* events left in the United States to qualify for the U.S. Para-Dressage Selection Trials for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG.) in Normandy, France. Those events include the AGDF 10 CPEDI3* in Wellington, FL, March 12-16, and the Golden State Dressage CPEDI3* in Rancho Murieta, CA, taking place April 3-6, 2014.

The first horse and rider combination in the ring under judge Lilo Fore at The Stadium at AGDF 7 was Grade III rider Ellie Brimmer (USA) of Wayzata, MN, and her brand new horse London Swing. The duo had a well-executed test and Brimmer was excited about how well the partnership came together. She noted, “I was really pleased with my test today. London Swing was just imported from Germany only one month ago. He handled the big atmosphere at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival really well; I give my trainer Rosalind Kinstler credit for getting us ready to show on such a short timeline and setting us up for success as we work towards my goal of qualifying to compete on the U.S. Team at the WEG. It was great to see other new horse rider combinations competing in the para-equestrian division as well and I know we all appreciate how welcoming the whole show management team at Global is to para-dressage competitors. I think the CPEDI3* this year will be very exciting as we do have a lot of new horse rider combinations working hard to qualify for WEG selection trials.”

Following Ellie Brimmer was Grade III rider Elle Woolley (USA) and her own P. Sparrow Socks. In 2013, Woolley attended the U.S. Para-Dressage Symposium held in Maine. During the symposium Woolley borrowed Grade IV Para-Dressage athlete Mary Jordan’s horse P. Sparrow Socks. For Jordan, P. Sparrow Socks was her project that she produced from her 2010 World Equestrian Games horse Paxton Abbey. Jordan saw the connection that Woolley and P. Sparrow Socks had and Woolley was excited to move forward within the Para-Dressage discipline and purchased the mare for competition. The AGDF 7 was the first big Para-Dressage show for duo Woolley and P. Sparrow Socks. “I couldn’t be more thrilled with my first day out there,” smiled Woolley. “I had no idea what to expect and my horse really stepped up for me. She knew she was performing and our scores reflected it. I’m very proud of her. The second day, I was just spent and so was my horse and our scores reflected that. I’m still so pleased with the overall weekend. I know now exactly what our homework is, where we need work, and I’m going to have to bring that extra energy. I know what to expect at the coming CPEDI3* and I am very confident about it.”

Former eventer and pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Deborah Stanitski, MD of Charleston, South Carolina and her horse Tiramisu were also experiencing one of their first big para-dressage shows over the weekend. Stanitski commented, “I was happy with my Grade II (team?) test but there was also room for improvement. I am looking forward to my first international Para-Dressage show at Global in the middle of March.”

Jody Schloss and Inspector Rebus at AGDF
Jody Schloss and Inspector Rebus at AGDF

Paralympian Jody Schloss and her veteran mount Inspector Rebus had two consist days at the Wellington horse show. Jody was happy with the weekend’s outcome and looks forward to showing at the AGDF 10 CPEDI3* alongside her Canadian teammates.

During the same weekend, Welcome Back to White Fences in Loxahatchee, Florida hosted a full Dressage and Para-Dressage show. Two-Time Paralympian Rebecca Hart (USA) and Canadian Robyn Andrews participated in the Para-Dressage Test of Choice. This show was the first debut of Grade II Rebecca Hart’s new horse Schroeters Romani. The duo had an outstanding individual test scoring a 77.571% on their first day.

Hart purchased Romani, an 11-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, with the help of Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Hart’s family, William and Sally Kimmel and Sycamore Station Equine Division.

Rebecca Hart noted, “I am super excited about Romani. I am honored and humbled to be able to get to ride this horse. We have the best support team behind us and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity. It wouldn’t have been possible without them. It was fantastic to go out and be as successful as we were on our first competition together.  I am really looking forward to the future and continuing to grow as a team.”

Para-Dressage riders continued to compete in AGDF 8 Palm Beach Derby February 28 – March 1, including Robyn Andrews (CAN) aboard Fancianna; Deborah Stanitski (USA) and Tiramisu; Angela Peavy (USA) with her three horses Ozzy Cooper, Stuart Little, and Lancelot Warrior; and Ellie Brimmer competed with London Swing earning a 71.875% in their Freestyle.

Scheduled March 12-16, 2014, Para-Dressage riders from Grade Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV will be participating in the AGDF 10 CPEDI3* held at The Stadium in Wellington, FL. This FEI qualifier for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games is one of the last two U.S. qualifiers before the WEG selection trials. Wellington, FL – January 30, 2014 – For one exciting evening their boots were left in the closet and their heels and ties appeared.  On January 24, 2014, The United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation launched their $35 Million Campaign to Achieve Competitive Excellence at the “Soirée du Cheval” Gala.  The event was held at The Pavilion at the International Polo Club Palm Beach and was a benefit for the United States Equestrian Teams headed to the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. Para-Dressage riders from across the country including riders from Northern California, Maine, and Texas flew to Wellington, Florida, in support of the U.S. Para-Dressage Team, the U.S. Show Jumping Team, the Eventing Team, the U.S. Dressage Team, the U.S. Reining Team, the Driving Team, the U.S. Endurance Team, and the U.S. Vaulting Team. After a wonderful keynote speech from USET Foundation President Tucker S. Johnson, a live auction commenced where over $700,000 was raised for the U.S. Teams. The event concluded with attendees hopping on the dance floor to celebrate the evening.  Para-Equestrian Dressage Technical Advisor/Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt was also in attendance at the event supporting the Para-Dressage riders and each of the United States Equestrian Teams. After the gala, Kai Handt had his first athlete meeting for the top-ranked Para-Dressage riders, their families, and support staff. Handt stressed how the future of the USEF U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Team is growing with young and emerging new talent. Excitement is building, while the first of two U.S. final 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games qualifier competitions start in March. The discipline anticipates several new horse rider combinations to be debuted, making the final team selection suspenseful.

Laureen Johnson, USEF High Performance Director of Para-Equestrian and Vaulting, commented, “I was delighted to see so many Para-Equestrian Dressage athletes, coaches, and enthusiasts attend the USET Foundation’s ‘Soirée du Cheval’ World Equestrian Games benefit in Wellington.  It was a most memorable evening for all.”

She continued, “Kai Handt, the new Para-Equestrian Dressage Technical Advisor/Chef d’Equipe, kicked off the next morning with a very successful breakfast forum for the top ranked Para-Equestrian athletes and coaches to discuss the team approach and strategize for 2014.  The feedback received was amazing and all athletes appeared to share Kai’s enthusiasm and grasped the team concept whole-heartedly. We are looking forward to working with Kai and a successful 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games experience.”
