Roxanne Trunnell (USA) Earns Overall High Point Award at CPEDI3*

Rancho Murieta, CA – June 15, 2015 – The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* concluded on Sunday, June 14, with Para-Dressage athletes in Grade Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV competing in the exciting Freestyle competition. Riders from both the U.S. and Canada competed at the Murieta Equestrian Center in Rancho Murieta, CA. Top riders in the Freestyle Tests included Susan Treabess (USA) and Kamiakin in Grade IV with a 70.417% and Katie Shoemaker (USA) and Pacific M in Grade III with a 71.833%. Also earning the blue for their Grade was Ashleigh Flores-Simmons (USA) and Binero in Grade II, Cambry Kaylor (USA) and Markgaards Downwind in Grade Ib, and Roxanne Trunnell and Royal Dancer in Grade Ia. Roxanne Trunnell (USA) also earned the high score award overall for her scores with Royal Dancer over the three days. The FEI Ground Jury includes Carlos Lopes (POR) 5*, Anne Prain (FRA) 5*, and David Schmutz (USA) 4*. For U.S. riders this like all CPEDIs are a qualifier for the Team Selection of the 2016 Paralympic Equestrian Team. U.S. Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt was on hand at the CPEDI3* coaching the U.S. to a team win over the weekend. Handt will also be a clinician at the USEF High Performance West Coast Para Equestrian Dressage Symposium Develop the Coach Program running from June 14-16.

Kai Handt commented, “The USA Para-Equestrian Dressage team is two for two in wins this year. So far they have won all of the Para-Equestrian CPEDI3* events they competed in. At this CPEDI3*, the U.S. riders won all classes and divisions for a clean sweep. This weekend showed that our approach of adding training symposiums after the CPEDI3*s works. The added training with coaches and riders really improved the scores with lots off 70s from our top riders. This is especially important because all CPEDIs are qualifiers for the U.S. Team selection for Rio.”

In addition to being the Chef d’Equipe, Kai Handt trains Roxanne Trunnell (USA) who earned the overall high score award over the weekend with Royal Dancer. Royal Dancer is owned by Julia Handt of Wylie, TX. Trundle also show her own NTEC Daytona Beach and had three successful tests in Grade Ia. Trunnell competed at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) with her horse Touche, who was retired following WEG and she is now working with NTEC Daytona Beach and Royal Dancer towards qualifying for the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

Roxanne Trunnell commented, “I’m very excited how my relationships are forming with NTEC Daytona Beach and Royal Dancer. I started showing Royal last year and he was fantastic but it seems like this year we are more comfortable and trusting with each other. I think we are hitting our stride and I’m excited to see where I go with him. Daytona is amazing as well; I’m definitely feeling her becoming more and more bonded to me. This was our first CPEDI together and I was a little worried that she wasn’t going to keep up with Royal score wise, but she was always really close to his scores. We too our working on building that solid relationship but as Tina Wentz said to me about the relationships, ‘There is no magic to speeding up the building a relationship part. It just takes time.’ I think Daytona, Royal, & I are going to have wonderful relationships together and the Para-Dressage world will definitely be seeing a lot more of us.”

Building a relationship with a horse takes time, as Susan Treabess (USA) of Winters, Calif. has showcased with Kathryn Hill’s PRE Stallion Kamiakin in Grade IV. Over the three days Treabess and Kamiakin earned high scores finishing with their Freestyle score of 70.417%. As a 2010 and 2014 WEG athlete Treabess is looking forward to continuing to compete through the summer in Prix St Georges and Intermediaire I, with a future outlook of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

In Grade III, Young Rider Kate Shoemaker (USA) had an outstanding Freestyle test earning a 71.833% with her own Pacifec M. Lara Oles and Bella followed Shoemaker for the second place finish with a 69.667% in the Freestyle. Canadian Tristiana Allowed and Rufu earned third.

“I am very pleased with Pacifec’s improvement since this event last year,” said Kate Shoemaker. Today we left it all in the arena and I’m honored to be awarded with technical marks of 69.5% or higher from all three judges. I’m very glad we had the opportunity to receive feedback from an excellent panel of FEI judges and I look forward to incorporating their advice into our preparation for NAJYRC (First-ever Para-Equestrian Dressage Young Rider Championships) in Lexington, KY next month and Nationals this fall in Texas.”

For Grade II rider Ashleigh Flores-Simmons (USA), the Golden State Dressage Classic is a hometown horse show. Flores-Simmons earned a great deal of support of the years riding her Arabian dressage horse. In 2014, Flores-Simmons earned a top ten finish at the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championships with Verite SF. She is now looking forward to the opportunity to qualify for the Rio Paralympics aboard her new Danish Warmblood Binero, owned by Brie Simmons of Elk Grove, CA. Flores-Simmons dominated Grade II on all three days over Canadian Jennifer McKenzie and Warlander, Lexington Star Brite.

Flores Simmons noted, “The show was wonderful; all of the competitors did great. I’m proud of my horse and how far we’ve come; he felt fantastic and I’m extremely proud of him. I’m grateful for this opportunity and for USEF, USPEA, and the show management for helping to make it a success. The input from the judges is very valuable and will help us greatly. It would not have been possible without the support and guidance of Dennis Callin, Susan Treabess, and Eva King along with the help of all of my family and friends.”

In 2013, Grade Ib Young Rider Cambry Kaylor (USA) was just beginning her Para-Dressage journey. At the Golden State Dressage Classic, the Utah native topped her Grade in the Freestyle with her experienced International Para-Dressage horse Markgaards Donnewind. Kaylor will be heading to Lexington, Kentucky in July for the first ever 2014 Young Rider Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships. Kaylor competed alongside United States athlete Laurietta Oakleaf and Stallion Niekele Fan Busenitz, owned by Laura McGinnis of Loxahatchee, FL.

Former Paralympian and USPEA President Hope Hand was on site watching the riders compete all weekend. Hand noted, “I was extremely happy with the performances put forth this weekend. The U.S. won all their classes and we debuted four new horse/rider combinations. I want to thank the judges, show management and the volunteers for a well-run event. We also want to thank the Canadians, our neighbors, for supporting this event and wish them well. We enjoy the friendly competition and the sportsmanship both countries share.”

Para-Dressage athletes next opportunity in the United States to qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Equestrian Team headed to Rio is October 27-29, 2015, in Katy, TX, at the 2015 Katy CPEDI3* event. Following the Katy CPEDI3* is the 2015 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship. A handful of Young Riders will head to Lexington, KY, July 14-19 for the inaugural Young Rider Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships.

Following the Golden State Dressage Classic will be two USEF High Performance Events for Para-Dressage and Para-Driving. June 14-16, 2015, 8am-5pm is the USEF High Performance West Coast Para Equestrian Dressage Symposium Develop the Coach Program for Coaches and Selected High Performance Riders in Rancho Murieta, CA. Clinicians: Kai Handt (USEF Chef d’Equipe in Para-Dressage), Carlos Lopes (5* FEI Para Equestrian Dressage Judge). Rancho Murieta, CA – June 13, 2015 – The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* kicked off on Friday with the Para-Equestrian Dressage Team Tests followed by Saturday’s Individual Tests. Eleven horse and rider combinations competed in Grades Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV in Rancho Murieta, CA. It was a warm day Friday for riders and horses with the thermostat reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but the Murieta Equestrian Center offered both a covered warm-up and competition arena for the riders allowing them to focus on the competition. Saturday, June 13, continued with the Individual Tests resulting in the United States earning the Team blue over Canada. U.S. Grade IV rider and 2010 and 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) athlete Susan Treabess (Winters, CA) and Kamiakin excelled over the two days earning a 70.079% in the Team Test followed by a 69.563% in the Individual Test. Grade III rider Lara Oles (Heber City, Utah) and her new mount Bella also earned commendable scores over both days. Ashleigh Flores-Simmons (USA) and her partner Binero earned first place both days on Binero in Grade II and Cambry Kaylor (USA) and Markgaards Donnewind traded blue for red against Laurietta Oakleaf (USA) in Grade Ib. 2014 WEG athlete Roxanne Trunnell had leading scores over both days in Grade Ia with Royal Dancer and NTEC Daytona Beach in Grade Ia finishing the Individual Test on Royal Dancer with a 72.319%. Scheduled June 11-14, 2015, the Golden State Dressage Classic features top international dressage competition. Para-Dressage riders will continue competing with the Freestyle Test on Sunday, June 14. The FEI Ground Jury includes Carlos Lopes (POR) 5*, Anne Prain (FRA) 5*, and David Schmutz (USA) 4*. Although this CPEDI3* is not a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Paralympics they are FEI shows where riders may earn their FEI Certificate of Capability. U.S. Team riders led by U.S. Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt included Susan Treabess and Kamiakin (Grade IV), Kate Shoemaker and Pacific M (Grade III), Laurietta Oakleaf and Niekele Fan Busenitz (Grade Ib), and Roxie Trunnell and Royal Dancer (Grade Ia).

Grade IV rider and 2010 and 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. athlete, Susan Treabess (Winters, CA), had a top performance in the Team Test earning a 70.079%. The duo of Treabess and the 2005 Pura Raza Espanol Stallion Kamiakin have been competing in able-bodied and para-dressage competitions all year and have had numerous successes along the way. Treabess is looking forward to Sunday’s Freestyle competition.

Treabess noted, “I’m absolutely thrilled with my rides and even more so with Kam. He’s really come on in the months since the WEG and I’m so happy it translated to the ring. He’s maturing to a point where he’s confident and powerful and he’s really become a great partner. Our next steps are to show him Prix St Georges and Intermediaire I throughout the summer to confirm him at FEI. I’m so excited about him; he’s a blast to ride and a cool horse to be around. His future is bright.”

Grade III rider Lara Oles (USA) of Heber City, Utah and her new partner Bella, a Canadian Sport Horse, earned the blue both days with a 68.991% in the Team Test followed by a top score in the Individual Test. Kate Shoemaker (Glendale, AZ) earned the second place with her own Pacifec M followed by Canadians Tristiana Allwood and Rufus and Sara Cummings and West Bay in 4th place both days.

Lara Oles commented, “The past two days have been like a dream come true. This is our first CDI and Bella has been amazing. After we won the Grade lll Team Test, I cried when they played the National Anthem; I was so overwhelmed. I feel like everything that has ever happened in my life has led me to this one defining moment. The past three years since I started competing in Para Dressage have been my happiest yet. I look forward to the future with my Team including Annie Sweet, my trainer, my ‘manager’ husband, Dan Oles, and my extraordinary Canadian Warmblood mare, Bella. Thank you to all my sponsors; I couldn’t be here without them.”

In Grade II, Ashleigh Flores-Simmons and new horse Danish Warmblood Binero, owned by Brie Simmons of Elk Grove, CA, earned the blue both days followed by Canadian Jennifer McKenzie with Lexington Star Brite. Flores-Simmons began her Para-Dressage journey on an Arabian and in three years is now aiming at the 2016 Paralympics with her high performance horse Binero.

Young Rider Cambry Kaylor (USA) and Markgaards Donnewind earned the blue in Grade Ib on Friday. Markgaards Donnewind is a Danish Warmblood formerly shown by Denmark Para-Dressage rider Malene Hoj Sommerlund. Laurietta Oakleaf (USA) with Friesian Stallion Niekele Fan Busenitz, owned by Laura McGinnis of Loxahatchee, FL, took home first place in the Grade Ib Individual Test.

2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games rider Roxanne Trunnell earned outstanding scores with Royal Dancer, owned by Julia Handy of Wylie, TX, and Trunnell’s own Westphalian mare NTEC Daytona Beach in Grade Ia. Trunnell improved on her Team Test and scored a 72.319% with Royal Dancer.

Riders will have an opportunity on Sunday to showcase their Freestyles on the final day of the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*.

Following the Golden State Dressage Classic will be two USEF High Performance Events for Para-Dressage and Para-Driving. Final US Para-Dressage World Equestrian Games Qualifier Completed at Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*

Rancho Murieta, California – April 7, 2014 – The pressure was on at the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* for many U.S. para-dressage athletes looking to qualify for the World Equestrian Games. From April 4-6, 2014, riders from Grade Ia, II, III, and IV competed for top scores in the international arena at the Murieta Equestrian Center. The FEI ground jury included Alison King (HK) FEI 4*, David Schmutz (USA) FEI 4*, Kathy Amos-Jacob (FRA) FEI 4*. After a top showing just weeks prior at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival CPEDI3* in Wellington, Florida, riders were ready to give it their all in their final qualifier held in the United States for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Selection Trial and U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship. With all U.S. events completed there are 14 U.S. riders qualified for the selection trials including a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Many of these riders will also compete at the Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championships, which coincide with the trials.

Para-Dressage Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt is looking forward to the June 2014 trials because he has spent the year watching, encouraging, and applauding the many talented U.S. horse and rider combinations. The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* was his last opportunity to see how each rider has progressed. Handt commented, “The U.S. para-dressage team had a great showing at this CPEDI3*. Our new riders performed well in their first CPEDI and everyone earned their qualifying scores for the trials. The seasoned riders had quality rides creating a great outlook for the future. There were small technical errors in a few tests but those should be easily ironed out. All of the riders look forward to their next performance at selection trials for the 2014 WEG. Overall, the show was a great success and we are thankful to the entire show for the great support of our para-dressage riders. We are also grateful to our sponsors for the team dinner that was provided.”

2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) U.S. rider Susan Treabess, Grade IV, understands the position each of the athletes are in right now. Almost one year ago, Winters, California equestrian and trainer Susan Treabess debuted the now 9-year-old Pura Raza Espanol Kamiakin, owned by Scott and Katie Hill. Treabess was happy about the duo’s first international show but was looking forward to preparing for 2014. As a 2010 WEG U.S. rider Treabess knows what it takes to get to that arena in Normandy, France. At the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*, Treabess and Kamiakin brought their best and earned solid team and individual scores. On the final day of competition Treabess earned an exciting 72.417% freestyle score. Although riders must qualify with the team or individual score, the freestyle scores will be taken into account for the selection trials.

Treabess explained, “In 2010, my freestyle score was what put me over the top for WEG. For some reason the freestyle really clicks with my horses and me. Of course I am working hard on the other tests but the freestyle has always been my strongest. It was the first time we rode this freestyle and we received some great feedback to work on before Gladstone.”

She continued, “This show was a bit of an experiment for Kam and [me]. After our one CPEDI in June 2013 we worked this last year on gate development. We have been working hard, training, showing, and we decided to try a few things at this show. It was great to get that perspective from the judges before selection trials. We took some risks that paid off and some that didn’t.”

This show was the first time Treabess was able to work with the new Para-Dressage Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt. She commented, “You never know with a new coach and new system but I have to say that Kai wants the same thing we do which is to become more competitive as a team. He knows his job is to make this team in a solid team and that will take some time. On a coaching level I appreciated his support this weekend. He recognized what Dennis and I have been working on, he knows we are doing everything we can, he reinforced our training this weekend and had that open communication we desire from a Chef d’Equipe. I am excited for what the future holds.”

For fellow Grade IV rider Holly Bergay, this show was a chance to step back into the international arena. In 2010 Bergay was named to the World Equestrian Games U.S. team. Unfortunately lameness in her mount would cause her to withdraw from the competition. Since that time period Bergay has been actively competing and topping the ranks in the small tour for para-dressage. The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* was Bergay’s opportunity to qualify once again for the 2014 World Equestrian Games. The judges were impressed with the duo of Bergay and Rubino Bellissimo who earned the top score of the competition of a 73.083% in their freestyle. Everyone was excited to see the accomplished para-dressage athlete back in the spotlight and earning top ranking international scores.

Rounding out the Grade IV tests was brand new para-dressage rider Elizabeth Traband and Ucari, owned by Helene Bergstrom. Just weeks prior, Traband and her mount were in Wellington, Florida at their first CPEDI3*. Traband, a talented hunter/jumper athlete, transitioned into the para-dressage world and was immediately a force to be reckoned with. After a near miss of a WEG qualification score in Florida, Traband packed her bags and traveled to Rancho Murieta in hopes of obtaining a qualifying score for the WEG and some important feedback from the ground jury. Traband and Ucari will now head back to the east coast where they will rendezvous with the 13 other U.S. para-dressage riders qualified for the WEG selection trials and national championships.

Following Traband’s trek across the country, Kate Shoemaker left Wellington, Florida, and headed to the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*. Shoemaker brought her own Pacifec M to the competition and their hard work paid off when they earned their qualification score. The para-dressage world takes commitment, hard work, and sacrifices. For both Traband and Shoemaker the trip to California may have seemed long but in the end, it was worth the miles. From the value of the feedback from the FEI 4* judge’s to the international show exposure, the experience was immeasurable.

Ashleigh Flores-Simmons, Grade II rider, can understand how these riders felt as they approached X on the first day. Only 9 months ago, she was trotting down centerline with a registered Arabian at her first CPEDI3*. Not even a full year later and Flores-Simmons has become the complete para-dressage package.

“She worked her tail off this year,” commented Flores-Simmons’ mentor and national coach Susan Treabess. “We pushed her and pushed her and she really stepped up to the plate this weekend. It was emotionally challenging but the judges gave her fantastic feedback. Verite and Ashleigh make a beautiful pair and we were all ecstatic about where she is right now. I know this partnership has a really strong future.”

Winterhaven Dressage and Horsemanship, owned by Susan Treabess, has given Flores-Simmons a borrowed horse sponsorship. This relationship has allowed Flores-Simmons and Treabess to work together on developing Flores-Simmons as an international athlete. It has also provided Flores-Simmons the opportunity to work with international renowned dressage trainer Dennis Callin.

Flores-Simmons was excited about her performance. She expressed, “This was an amazing weekend and I am so thankful for this opportunity. Verite and I had a great first CPEDI together and she was absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in the ring and I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish this weekend. I would like to thank Dennis Callin and Susan Treabess for their great coaching and support; without them this would definitely not be possible. I would also like to thank Dana Williams for providing me with the opportunity to ride such an awesome horse and for all of her help and support. Also, without the support of the whole Winterhaven Dressage and Horsemanship team this would not be possible. To all of the friends and family that support Verite, I am greatly appreciative for all that they do and for the endless encouragement they provide. In addition, I want to thank USPEA and everyone who played a part in making this event possible and ensured it ran smoothly. I really valued the opportunity to receive feedback from the judges and I appreciated the time they took to offer their insights so that we can improve. I can’t wait for what the future holds.”

Competing against Flores-Simmons in Grade II was Dr. Deborah Stanitski and her own Tiramisu. Stanitski, like Traband and Shoemaker, shipped out of Florida and headed to California in search of a qualification score and a chance to ride at another CPEDI3*. The trip paid off when Stanitski earned the scores she needed and the welcome feedback she desired.

Earning a clean sweep in the Grade Ia competition was wounded U.S. Air Force veteran Derrick Perkins and Kai Handt’s NTEC Hans. The pair had an exciting showing at the Adequan Global Dressage CPEDI3* in Florida and they are continuing to develop their partnership together. Perkins noted, “This was a real learning experience. Each test I made improvements and my final ride was my best.”

Perkins has been working with Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt over the last year and he has already become a top ranking U.S. Grade Ia athlete.

Perkins and each of the qualified athletes will head to Gladstone, New Jersey in June where they will compete at the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Selection Trials for the U.S. Team.

Treabess remarked, “I am looking forward to New Jersey. It is going to be competitive. On one hand it’s nerve racking because it is a lot of time and money and you really want to make the team, and if you don’t it’s disappointing. But it’s so exciting for U.S. para-dressage. We are going to have a really tight competition, which is great for us as a country. The competition is going to be day to day and no one will know who is on that team till that final freestyle and ranking calculation.”

Developing Riders Earn Their Qualifying Scores for the 2014 World Equestrian Games

Rancho Murieta, CA – June 16, 2013 – As the Pura Raza Espanol, Kamiakin, made its way down to X on the centerline, Susan Treabess (USA) cracked a smile. The Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* crowd erupted in cheering for the stallion and his Grade IV rider who had just completed an outstanding freestyle. After three days of Para-Dressage competition in front of judges Alison King (HK) FEI 4*, David Schmutz (USA) FEI 4* and Lorraine Stubbs (CAN) FEI 4*, Susan knew she was ready and excited for the years to follow. In 2010, Treabess represented the USA at the World Equestrian Games (WEG). In 2014, she hopes to have this opportunity again. During the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*, multiple riders both developing and veterans achieved their qualifying scores for WEG. Those riders include Angela Peavy and two-time Paralympian Barbara Grassmyer, both in Grade III, Grade II rider Ashleigh Flores-Simmons, and Grade Ib Roxanne Trunnel. From Canada, Paralympian Jody Schloss of Grade Ia executed exceptional tests while Robyn Andrews followed with her outstanding test scores. After three days of international team, individual, and freestyle tests riders can now reflect and build upon this learning experience for the next major competition year in 2014.

Susan Treabess was unsure of what to expect when she entered her 8-year-old into his first international competition. “What I am taking away from this show is that Kamiakin is a super horse,” smiled Treabess. “He has to get more experience but he is THE horse for me. He is going to be my partner for a very long time. I am happy with my overall performance this weekend. Of course there were mistakes but I know that in the future I can surpass 70% on this horse. If I don’t, it’s going to be my fault. I know that now; I have my work cut out for me but I have the right team of people ready to help me get there.”

After a conservative team test ride, Treabess pushed Kamiakin during the individual test. That extra push resulted in more expression and a higher percentage score; however, it also created a little tension that will be polished out as they gain experience together. During the freestyle test, Treabess executed a well-choreographed and artistic test. Treabess noted, “That was our first clean run of our freestyle. The music lit Kamiakin up a little bit but that will disappear as he gains experience. With the freestyle being 25% of the final selection score, any rider knows they can gain some major points with a great freestyle. However, you can’t have that as your major focus. As I work with Kamiakin over the next year, I plan on perfecting our technique giving this horse more experience along the way.”

For an international rider like Treabess, getting to the top takes a team. That includes trainers, farriers, veterinarians, therapists, and so many more supporters. “We have a strong support team,” added Treabess. “I want to thank Denny Callin of Holland for giving me his time this week, Ellen Eckstein, and I have to thank Katie and Scott Hill. I would not be in this position without Kamiakin’s owners Scott and Katie Hill. They have entrusted me with this horse and chose not to sell him when they could have. I am so thankful I have this opportunity and I am excited for the future.”

Both Treabess and Grade III two-time Paralympian Barbara Grassmyer (USA) have been on the international stage. They have experienced what it is like to compete against the best Para-Dressage riders in the world. For developing riders like Roxanne Trunnell (USA), Ashleigh Flores-Simmons (USA), Angela Peavy (USA), and Katie Passerotti (USA), the excitement of what the future will hold is what drives them to succeed.

“This CPEDI3* has been an amazing experience,” commented Grade Ib rider Roxanne Trunnell. “I learned what it takes to compete at an international show including the paperwork and process for this level of competition. Even the jog was a new experience and it reminded me of my pony club days but with added pressure. This was our first international show for my girl, Nice Touch, and me. I rode two solid rides and we earned our qualifying score. I learned a lot from the judge’s remarks and they were right about what I need to work on. Now it’s time to go home and train.”

Grade Ib young rider, Ashleigh Flores-Simmons, agreed. “This weekend has been a really good experience, very educational, and positive because I got out there in front of FEI judges. This is a really great starting point.”

She continued, “I was happy with my tests over the weekend. I nailed down the geometry and saw consistencies within the remarks that the judges made. Many of the comments were things I knew I had to work on but they also pointed out details that made me realize I had performed certain moves better than I had originally thought. It makes me feel like I am on the right track and the hard work paid off. I still have a lot to learn and a lot of work ahead. I am willing to do it, I want to do it, and I do this because I love it.”

Competitive as a national rider, the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* was the first Para-Equestrian Dressage competition Flores-Simmons had ever entered. “I was excited to be around other people with disabilities because I have been so mainstreamed.” said Flores-Simmons. “I am eternally grateful for my experience. It’s exciting to have the ability to ride against able-bodied people and still be successful but it’s really cool to see other people, like myself, get out there and not let their disabilities stop them but let their ability speak.”

Angela Peavy and Leandro
Angela Peavy and Leandro

For Connecticut rider Angela Peavy and her new horse Leandro, the 2013-2014 competition year will be full of excitement. Peavy has gained notable status as a Young Rider and is quickly developing as an international rider. With her talented Westphalian, a strong support team, a WEG qualifying score, and the desire to work to the top, Angela has combined the pieces to create the ultimate product.

Continued interest in the sport of Para-Equestrian Dressage, more Para-Dressage classifications, and new developing riders promises the United States of America that Para-Dressage is holding its own in the high-performance world. When riders like Katie Passerotti of Pennsylvania travel across the United States to accomplish a dream, shows what the equestrian sport as a whole does for lovers of the horse.

Dressage Riders Secure World Equestrian Games Qualifying Scores at Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*

Susan Treabess and Kamiakin. Photos by Lindsay McCall.

Rancho Murieta, CA – June 14, 2013 – International Para-Dressage competition at the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* kicked off on Friday, June 14, in Rancho Murieta, Calif. Grade Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV showcased their best team tests resulting in multiple 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games qualification scores. The minimum requirement for para-dressage is each athlete/horse combination has to score a 60% or above in the team test or individual test. This has to occur one time in front of three FEI 4* judges of different nationalities or three FEI 5* judges. Top U.S. riders included Susan Treabess of Winters, Calif. in Grade IV, and Angela Peavy aboard Leandro (USA) from Avon, Conn. Canada presented exquisite Grade Ia team tests with Jody Schloss and Inspector Rebus scoring a 70.435%, while duo Robyn Andrews and Fancianna captured a 68.696%. Para-Equestrian Dressage competition will continue over the weekend with the individual tests on Saturday and the exciting freestyle tests on Sunday, June 16. The FEI Ground Jury includes President Alison King (HK) FEI 4* and FEI Ground Jury members David Schmutz (USA) FEI 4* and Lorraine Stubbs (CAN) FEI 4*.

Susan Treabess and the Pura Raza Espanol horse Kamiakin impressed the FEI Ground Jury, scoring a 67.421% in Grade IV at their first international competition. Treabess noted, “This was his fourth horse show with us and first time in the FEI ring. Friday was a good start; I rode a conservative test resulting in a smooth first run. I am getting back into competition, I was off for an entire year; this is a new horse, a young horse, and an inexperienced horse. Now that we know we could get a solid score on a conservative test, we will try and push him a little bit more. As a ride he is quite straightforward. He has a solid mind, is dependable, and has great accuracy. We really didn’t know where this horse was going to land. I have been out of showing for a year, I am not fit, I had a baby, I am adjusting to motherhood and I have had to go through this phase of life and figure out how to get back in and be competitive. Now it’s time for me to go home, get my butt kicked, and raise the money to get to WEG.”

Treabess worked with Denny Callin of Holland during the Golden State Dressage Classic. As a notable trainer of many top dressage athletes, Callin has the experience and knowledge of working with both able-bodied high-performance riders and Para-Dressage riders. Almost 10 years ago, Callin approached Treabess to interest her in becoming more involved with Para-Dressage. With some assistance from him and Ellen Eckstein they got Treabess her first 2010 WEG horse Money Penny.

Treabess added, “Denny is a super coach. He lives in Europe and understands the quality of Para-Dressage horses in Europe. In the U.S. there is a fundamental weakness in the understanding of what a true Para-Dressage horse looks like and rides like. Coaching is also important. I am lazy unless someone is behind me pushing me. I am looking forward to working with Callin the rest of the week. He has been very generous with his time and commitment to me. As for the future we are working on not only qualifying for the 2014 WEG but developing Kam in the able-bodied world. Kamiakin is owned by Kathryn Hill Aalsmeer.

Angela Peavy and Leandro
Angela Peavy and Leandro

As an able-bodied young rider Peavy has started making a name for herself. With the move to Para-Dressage she has already qualified for the 2014 WEG Selection Trials. On Friday, Angela Peavy and Leandro (USA) made their Para-Dressage debut scoring the top Grade III position with a 63.684%. Following Angela for second place was two-time Paralympian and 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) rider Barbara Grassmyer aboard Mibis (USA).

Sixteen-year-old Peavy, from Avon, Conn., is partially paralyzed on her left side due to a blood clot that occurred before birth. With the move to Para-Dressage, Peavy bought a new horse from David Marcus in Florida and has plans to work with Heather Blitz in Massachusetts when she returns from this CPEDI3*. Peavy expressed, “I have never competed at a CPEDI3* so I didn’t know what to expect. It was very exciting and nerve wracking. This is only our second show together and we earned our qualifying score.”

She continued, “Our ride went fairly well on Friday. Leandro is a very calm, loving, easy-going horse. He is a workout to ride but he loves to please. I want to thank my parents for this opportunity, my past trainer Anne Guptill for getting me this far, David Marcus for Leandro, and Tanya Vik who has been training me in California.”

Also earning their qualifying scores on Friday were pair Roxanne Trunnell and Nice Touch (USA) in Grade Ib and young athlete Ashleigh Flores-Simmons and Arabian Athena in Grade II.

Para-Dressage competition continues in the Main Arena Saturday with the Individual Test for Grades Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV, followed by Sunday’s Freestyle Tests. 2014 World Equestrian Games Qualifier for Para-Dressage Begins at Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*

Rancho Murieta, CA – June 13, 2013 – Para-Dressage riders from North America united at the Rancho Murieta Equestrian Center for the 2013 Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3* weekend. Horse and rider combinations turned out for the FEI Horse Inspection on Thursday, June 13, in front of FEI Veterinary Delegate Dr. Mike Tomlinson, DVM (USA); FEI Ground Jury President Alison King (HK) FEI 4*; and FEI Ground Jury members David Schmutz (USA) FEI 4* and Lorraine Stubbs (CAN) FEI 4*. Friday, June 14, begins the FEI Para-Equestrian Team Test competition for Grades Ia-IV, followed by the Individual Test on Saturday and Freestyle Tests on Sunday, June 15. Pressure is on for Para-Dressage athletes looking to attain their qualifying scores for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games located in Normandy, France.

With only one year before equestrians head to France, the United States continues to grow the number of Para-Dressage participants, while solidifying their veteran horse and rider combinations. Over the weekend, spectators should expect to see 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) Grade IV rider Susan Treabess of Winters, Calif. aboard her new mount Kamiakin. Two-Time Paralympian and fellow 2010 WEG teammate, Barabara Grassmyer (Grade III) stepped back into the stirrups aboard her experienced gelding Mibis. For many U.S. riders this will be their first opportunity in front of international Para-Dressage judges. Those riders include Ashleigh Flores-Simmons with horse Athena (Grade II), Roxanne Trunnel of Washington State and her own Nice Touch (Grade Ib). U.S. riders traveling long-distances were Angela Peavy and Leandro (Grade III) of Connecticut and Katie Passerotti (Grade IV) aboard Lucky Dragon from Pennsylvania.

Katie Passerotti is looking forward to three days of international competition at the Golden State Dressage Classic CPEDI3*. She noted, “I am excited to be here. It was a very difficult journey to coordinate but this is something I really want and this is something I want to experience. It hasn’t been easy but I look forward to what the weekend brings.”

She explained, “It’s really cool to be here with Lucky Dragon. I bought him as an eventer originally and he has made a great transition to Dressage. I never expected him to be Second or Third Level material and the fact that he has stepped up to the plate is amazing. I am really proud of our partnership because I have been the one who has worked with him and brought him to this point.”

Journeying across the United States similar to Passetori and Peavy were two experienced Canada individual representatives both representing Grade Ia. Those accomplished equestrians include Jody Schloss aboard Inspector Rebus and Robyn Andrews with horse Fancianna.

Competition begins in the Main Arena Friday with the Team Test for Grades Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV, followed by Saturday’s Individual Team Test, and Sunday’s Freestyle Tests.
