Horse Show by Appointment Names Champions at Double C Saddlery Finals

Morgan Holmes and Poco Smart Oak.

Sarasota, FL – January 10, 2015 – Horse Show by Appointment (HSBA) is giving away an impressive $100,000 in cash and prizes at this weekend’s 2014 HSBA Championship Double C Saddlery Finals. On Saturday at Triple J Ranch the champions of the Open and Non Pro Bridle and Hackamore divisions and the Non Pro Boxing division each rode away with a sizeable check, a brand new Double C saddle, a custom belt buckle and a custom engraved knife.

“The [HSBA Championship Double C Saddlery] Finals are awesome because they pay so much money,” said 19-year-old rider Morgan Holmes, daughter of Jay and Rhonda Holmes of Triple J Ranch. “It’s a good opportunity to come here and show and have a chance to win that kind of money.”

Morgan went home with a large check of her own on Saturday after being named champion in the Non Pro Bridle division aboard Joana Azevedo’s Poco Smart Oak. Morgan, who is home on winter break from Vernon College in Vernon, Texas, had never ridden the mare prior to this weekend, but they looked like a veteran pair during their runs on Thursday and Saturday.

“She’s owned by my friend Joana, and I leased her to show her here. The first go around was my first time ever riding her,” Morgan explained. “She’s a really an awesome horse. Joana has done a great job riding her and getting her ready.”

In the Non Pro Boxing division, the championship went to another relatively new combination: that of Jen Frame and her own Junkyard Cat.

The weekend marked only Frame’s second time showing Junkyard Cat, or “Jagger,” and the first of a hopeful many big wins in Frame and Jagger’s promising career.

“He’s awesome,” an emotional Frame said of the 5-year-old stallion. “I got him down here to Triple J when he was 3, and ever since then he has just done amazing. Jay [Holmes] rides him in the Open, and I ride him in the Non Pro Limited. He does great on both levels. He’s just an amazing horse.”

Frame continued, “He’s kind of a character. He’s a big kid. He likes to play. He’s a stud, but he’s just extremely gentle and well-mannered and extremely easy to work with.”

The Double C saddle going home with Frame is her first saddle win, but she has her sights set on many more down the road. Junkyard Cat will be heading to the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) World Show, competing in the Open Hackamore division, and in a few years, Frame hopes to see Junkyard Cat in the arena at the World’s Greatest Horseman competition.

If his performances this weekend were any indication, Junkyard Cat looks fine-tuned and ready for the NRCHA World Show Open Hackamore competition. It was within that division that Jay Holmes rode Junkyard Cat to another HSBA championship on Saturday, earning another Double C Saddle and a $5,000 pay out.

Also headed for the NRCHA World Show are Verna Benbow and One Smokin Tomcat. Benbow earned the victory on Saturday in the HSBA Non Pro Boxing Derby.

“I’m very pleased with him; I’m happy with our runs,” Benbow said. “The girls I run against, they’re so awesome. Usually we just keep rotating around who wins. This time it was my turn I guess. It’s just so much fun. We appreciate Rick [Steed] having the show here for us.”

Benbow continued, “I’ve had [One Smokin Tomcat] since he was born in my pasture. It’s really nice that I’ve had him since he was a baby. At the beginning of the year he turned 5, so I’ve got another derby year on him. That’s very nice. I know everybody says it, but he’s a sweetheart. He’s so easy. He’s a pleaser. You couldn’t ask for a nicer horse.”

In addition to her win today, Benbow just qualified One Smokin Tomcat for the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Show a week ago.

Other big winners on Saturday include Jay Holmes and McKenna Ivey’s Colonel Get Yer Dun, winners of the HSBA Open Derby; Frank Prisco and his own Mr. Whiskers One Time, champions of the Non Pro Hackamore division; Richard Rosell and Smart German Remedy, winners of the Non Pro Derby; and Barry Spinweber and Hell R Highwater, champions of the Intermediate Non Pro Hackamore division.

The final HSBA 2014 champions will be named beginning Sunday morning as competition comes to a conclusion with the Two Rein, Level One Boxing, Youth, Little Britches and Level Two Boxing classes.

About Horse Show by Appointment

Horse Show by Appointment’s fresh approach to reined cow horse competition has been an unprecedented success and aims to make showing “Fun, Fair and Affordable” for competitors. To accommodate those traveling long distances to show and to help busy riders fit showing in at their convenience, HSBA allows riders to reserve their own ride times in advance. This cuts down on usual travel expenses such as stall rentals and hotels and encourages competitors to make the trip and join in the fun.

Each HSBA series includes four shows. Riders who compete at three out of the four shows earn a place in the annual Championship Finals, which offer over $100,000 in cash and prizes. Competitors may also qualify for the Finals in absentia by simply sending in entries and payment to each of the four shows.

Steed Training and Horse Show by Appointment are preparing to open an additional facility in Loxahatchee Groves, Florida, less than 10 miles from the center of Wellington. Once complete, it will be a top-notch venue for reined cow horse competitors and other Western riders. The new facility, including a state-of-the-art arena complete with lighting, will open in January and allow Steed Training to build on their commitment to bringing Western riding to the Wellington area.

Additional sponsorships are available for HSBA’s 2015 season, and now is the perfect time to get on board to take full advantage of HSBA’s events and associated promotional opportunities. Contact Mary Adelaide Brakenridge at mab@phelpsmediagroup.com for more information.

Conor Swail and Fortis Fortuna Finish on Top of Wellington Turf Tour 1.40 Grand Prix Rankings

Conor Swail and Fortis Fortuna.

Wellington, FL – January 9, 2015 – Ireland’s Conor Swail left little room for competitors to match his pace today during the Ridge at Wellington’s 2015 Turf Tour held at Wolfstone Stables. The Irishman showed that he had more than luck as he took the lead early in the day as one of 10 riders to master the track and post a double-clear effort with Fortis Fortuna, owned by Susan and Ariel Grange. As only the ninth rider, Swail knew that he had speedy competitors hot on his heels, but he could not compensate speed for accuracy.

“I don’t know her [Fortis Fortuna] that well because our other rider mainly rode her last year,” Swail explained. “I just started riding her again this year, so we are working on getting to know one another. It was just about being as efficient as I could out there. I am lucky that I have the quality under me because of great owners.”

Fortis Fortuna is a 10-year-old mare who had a little bit of time off last year and has been gradually building up since then. Swail took several chances during the shortened track, making tight turns and using her quick speed across the ground to shave the seconds. The pair tripped the timer in 31.920 seconds to take the lead from Canada’s Amy Millar, who posted the first double-clear of the day in 34.162 seconds.

“Fortuna had a great round out there today, and this is a great facility to be able to come and train your horses and be competitive in a beautiful grass arena,” Swail said. “There are a few more horses that we have resting right now, but we will be rotating them for the competition at the Turf Tour. It is lovely to come here. It is a nice bit of money for this class, and it is very relaxed. I think this is good for the horses to get a change of scenery from the everyday of the Winter Equestrian Festival; it keeps them fresh.”

It was 2014 Turf Tour Leading Rider Jeffery Welles who would claim the second place with KM What Ever RV, owned by Nod Hill Farm of Wilton, CT. Welles had a stronghold on the 2014 Turf Tour Circuit, leading the ranks with his two mounts, Bilion and Antaris S. Today he brought out the Dutch Warmblood gelding and mimicked Swail’s swift pace and clean course; however, his time of 32.330 seconds would prove only good enough for second place. Sarah Wayda and her own Faroukh would finish in third place in 32.939 seconds.

Beth Underhill and Viggo captured the fourth place in 33.301 seconds, while Kristen Vanderveen and Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili took the fifth. Millar, the initial leader of the class, would round out the top six.

“I think today’s course was challenging, without being over-facing,” Millar said. “I have a bit of a young horse, and it is a great experience for him to go to different rings and see different 1.40m courses so that he can get all of the experience I need to bring him on as an international horse. If you have a horse that isn’t ready to do a big grand prix at WEF, there isn’t a place for them in Wellington. Being in the business, it is nice to be able to jump at a reasonable cost for good prize money. It is a great way to get the experience without breaking the bank.”

Not only was the competition fierce for the second day of the Wellington Turf Tour, but the hospitality was unparalleled. The Ridge at Wellington hosted a beautiful spread for breakfast and lunch, allowing riders, owners and trainers to take a moment to relax in the tranquil atmosphere.

The course opened at 8 a.m. and remained open until 4:30 p.m., allowing competitors ample time to come at their convenience to ride and enjoy the ambiance of Wolfstone Stables. The 12-week series continues next week at the prestigious International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Riders have the opportunity to ride over straight from the show grounds, or trailer their horses over while enjoying hospitality and quality competition. Whether it is an hour, the morning, the afternoon or the entire day, The Ridge Turf Tour offers a traditional and laid back environment for exhibitors, trainers and owners.

Meadowbrook Horse Transport will provide transportation to and from the horse show and other locations throughout Wellington for both the Wednesday and Friday events. The transportation is a nominal fee of $50 per horse, and will be calculated into the final show fees. To make a reservation for one of the three pickup times, 8 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m., please call Peter Tufano of Meadowbrook Horse Transport at (954) 415-7217, or call Nona Garson at (908) 500-0996.

US Para-Dressage Athletes Dominate at the 2015 Adequan Global Dressage Festival CPEDI3*

Hart and Schroeter’s Romani. Photo (c) Lindsay Y. McCall.

Wellington, FL – January 9, 2015 – The 2015 Adequan Global Dressage Festival CPEDI3* commenced with 13 horse and rider combinations showcasing the Para-Equestrian Dressage Team Test. Para-Dressage athletes from Grades Ia, Ib, II, III, and IV, competed in the Van Kampen Arena at the Global Dressage show grounds. Equestrians from Canada and the United States faced off once again in front of FEI Ground Jury members Mr. Freddy Leyman (BEL), Mr. Kjell Myhre (NOR), and Ms. Kristi Wysocki (USA). Earning the highest score of the day, with a 73.284% was Rebecca Hart (USA) and Schroeter’s Romani in Grade II. Schroeter’s Romani is owned by Rebecca Hart in conjunction with Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel. Also in Grade II Lauren Barwick (CAN) and her own Ferdonia 2 scored a 72.157%. USA Athlete Dale Dedrick and her new horse Mr. Bockman topped Grade Ib with a 69.333. Also garnering the blue ribbons was Angela Peavy (USA) and Ozzy Cooper in Grade III, Mary Jordan (USA) and Rubicon 75, owned by Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center, in Grade IV, and Jody Schloss (CAN) and her own Inspector Rebus in Grade Ia. Not far in the horizon for these Para-Dressage riders is qualifying for the 2016 Paralympic Equestrian competition in Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil, September 7-18, 2016. This CPEDI3* is one of the qualifiers for the 2016 USEF 2016 Paralympic Equestrian Selection Trials.

Grade II rider, Two-time Paralympian (2008, 2012), two-time World Equestrian Games athlete (2010, 2014), and six -time USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Champion Rebecca Hart is on track for the 2016 Paralympic Selection Trials with Schroeter’s Romani. One year ago, the pair had just started working together. Months later they qualified and were selected for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Team. Hart commented, “It has been a roller coaster of a process to get here. It’s been a whirlwind. We got her (Romani) a year ago before making the WEG team. We knew that was pushing the relationship and rushing it a little bit but she kept doing what she needed to do. We learned a lot from the World Equestrian Games experience. Romani has the talent and the presence for a good international horse. We learned where those relationship holes needed filled and that just takes time. So this year I am much more comfortable and she’s comfortable with me. Now we can enhance the performances and ask for a little more from her. We are now in that exciting stage where I can visualize what our partnership can be so it’s fun to work towards that.” Hart is working together with Missy Ransehousen of Blue Hill Farm and Todd Flettrich of Cherry Knoll Farm maximizing expertise for this partnership.

Following in Grade II for the second place position in the Team Test was Paralympian, WEG athlete, and gold medal rider Lauren Barwick (CAN) and her own Oldenburg Ferdonia 2. Barwick and Ferdonia 2 have been working together to create a harmonious partnership.

Topping Grade Ia was Paralympian and WEG athlete Jody Schloss (CAN) and longtime partner Inspector Rebus with a 68.333%. Earning the second place finish was Roxanne Trunnell and her new partner Westphalian NTEC Royal Dancer, owned by Julia Handt. In third place were Robyn Andrews (CAN) and her own Fancianna, followed by U.S. Air Force Veteran Derrick Perkins and Hanoverian Gracias Juan, owned by Stephanie Dubicki.

Since the 2012 London Paralympics, Grade Ib athlete Dale Dedrick purchased a new partner named Mr. Bockman, took some time off health reasons, and is now back in the Para-Dressage world at her best. Dedrick explained, “My ride on Mr. Bockman today was astonishing. I was really pleased with him. He was the same horse he is at home; he looks at stuff, you give him a thump with your calf and he goes, ‘okay.’ We bought Mr. Bockman 18 months ago but I was quite ill so I didn’t ride for the first year. So in June we went to our first horse show together and now this CPEDI3* is only my 4th show with him. He’s a great horse, very straightforward to ride, and not complicated.” Dedrick had a solid test and had an exceptional free walk. Dedrick commented, “That free walk is my favorite part because it really relaxes him. Even if he gets tense, you just drop the reins and he gets comfortable. He lived out in a field as a pet on a big farm so to him that is natural. I am looking forward to the rest of this weekend and really improving each rider and having a good time.” Dedrick rides with Roz Kinstler in Michigan.

Taking home both second and third place Grade Ib ribbons was 2014 WEG U.S. athlete Sydney Collier and her own Wentworth and NTEC Roulette, owned by Kai Handt. Collier was happy with each of her horses in the team test competition. Collier expressed, “I was really really happy with my tests and it’s always a great learning experience. This is my first time out with Wentworth at a CPEDI in two years because we decided to wait with him and not push him too hard. We really accomplished the consistency that we wanted to with Wentworth in the Team Test. I loved everything about each movement in that test. Roulette was great too. I was really happy with how he went today. I have only ridden him 7 times so it’s still a new partnership for both of us.”

As a WEG Team rider Collier flew back to the U.S. from France only to turn around and head to Baku, Azerbaijan to receive her Against All Odds award at the FEI Awards Gala 2014 presented by Longines. She then earned the 2014 USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year accolade, came back to the U.S., flew to Texas to train with Chef d’Equipe Kai Handt and NTEC Roulette for a week, then headed to New York to train with Wes Dunham and her horse Wentworth. Finally they headed south to prepare for this Florida CPEDI3*. Collier joked, “I am not sure what state I am in anymore, but this is all worth it and I am having fun doing it. I am especially enjoying training with both Wes and Kai. They have both been amazing working with me and adapting to me body’s needs. I love them as trainers and they make a good team.”

2014 Individual WEG athlete and young rider Angela Peavy, who trains with Heather Blitz, was showcasing her high performance partners Ozzy Cooper and Lancelot Warrior. Peavy topped Grade III with Ozzy Cooper earning a 68.070, followed by Lancelot Warrior with a 67.237. Ellie Brimmer and Hanoverian London Swing rounded out the Grade IIIs with a third place finish. Brimmer trains with Roz Kinstler and Shelly Francis. Athlete Mary Jordan and Oldenburg Rubicon 75, owned by Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center, took home the blue in Grade IV. Jordan and Rubicon 75 began their partnership in Spring 2014 and since their first ride together they have been working with trainer Jim Koford to bring out the best Dressage combination.

The 2015 Adequan Global Dressage Festival CPEDI3* continues on Saturday, January 10, with the FEI Para-Dressage Individual Championship Test followed by the FEI Para-Dressage Freestyle Test on Sunday, January 11.

The 2015 Adequan Global Dressage Festival CPEDI3* is once again managed by Lloyd Landkamer. The FEI Ground Jury includes Mr. Freddy Leyman (BEL), Mr. Kjell Myhre (NOR), and Ms. Kristi Wysocki (USA). Global Dressage Festival I CDI W/1*/Y/J/P/U25/CPEDI 3* January 7-11, 2015 is presented by Adequan. It features over $50,000 in prize money and is official qualifying competition for: The 2015 Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North; the 2015 USEF Pony Rider Dressage National Championship; 2015 AGCO/USEF Junior and Young Rider Dressage National Championships; and the 2015 USEF Young Adult ‘Brentina Cup’ Dressage National Championship. It’s also the official qualifying competition for the 2015 Markel/USEF Young and Developing Horse Dressage Championships, the Great American/USDF Regional Championships and USDF/Dover Adult Amateur Medal Program. The Adequan Global Dressage Festival is the world’s largest international and national dressage circuit featuring 8 CDIs, including five CDI-Ws, one 4* and one 5*, the only non-championship CDIO Nations’ Cup in the Western Hemisphere, as well as weekly U.S. National events.

Polo for a Purpose Features Brandon Phillips and All-Star Polo Lineup

Wellington, FL – January 9, 2015 – Polo for a Purpose invites you to watch some of the best polo players in the Nation play a charitable polo game to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, FL. While this event will raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research, it will also help support local patients and their families by providing critically needed financial aid.

On Monday, January 19, Polo for a Purpose will feature an all-star lineup of polo players including Honorary Chairman Brandon Phillips, a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor and one of the best polo players in the country.

During his almost 20 years as a professional polo player and 5-goal handicap, Phillips has captured some of the sport’s most coveted trophies. Although Phillips has realized his dream to play at the top of his sport of polo, he considers surviving stage four lymphoma to be his greatest accomplishment.

Phillips has been riding horses since he was 18 months old and at 11 played his first match at the Toronto Polo Club, becoming the youngest player there at that time. Everything seemed to be falling into place for Phillips until the day he woke up with severe swelling and an aching pain in his right leg. Twenty-four hours later and at just 14 years old, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Though Phillips’ parents did not tell him at the time, his doctor’s gave him six weeks to live.

Phillips endured five grueling months of intensive chemotherapy sessions but never lost his spirit. He beat the odds and went into remission with an altered outlook that would change the course of his life forever. Once he recovered, he vowed to dedicate his life to doing what he loved – playing polo. Since then, Phillips has established himself as one of the world’s most talented polo players.

With all his professional success, Phillips continues to remember the catalyst that changed the course of his life. He strives to be a role model on and off the field by dedicating much of his time to philanthropy by supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. While his dream is to one day win the US Open, his most important goal is a world without cancer.

Friends of Phillips and polo greats themselves, such as Nic Roldan, Jeff Hall, Jeff Blake, Sugar Erskine, Chris Nevins, Kris Kampsen, and Mariano Gracida, will join Phillips on the field to help raise money for the cause.

Nic Roldan, originally from Argentina, is a third generation polo player and currently rated at 8 goals. He became a professional polo player at the age of 14 and won the coveted U.S. Open in 1998. Roldan has become one of the top professional polo players in the world today and holds many of the highest accolades. He has charged the polo fields on five continents and continues to add to his roster of wins. Roldan is also a polo Ambassador for JustWorld International.

Jeff Hall was raised in Santa Barbara, CA and Houston, TX. He became a professional polo player at age 12. Hall has won almost every high-goal trophy in U.S. polo, including the most prestigious, the U.S. Open Polo Championship. Jeff is also one of only a handful of American players to have played in the highly regarded Argentine Open. Currently holding a 7-goal handicap, Jeff is one of the best players in the world, and one of just a few highly rated American players.

Jeff Blake is currently rated at 6 goals on the field and 7 in the arena. Blake has an extremely impressive list of high goal career wins, including winning the U.S. Open three times. Jeff has been awarded the Robert Skene Trophy in 1996 and 2004 for 20-goal tournament players of extraordinary merit. Jeff is known for his quiet professionalism and extremely performance driven style of riding. Jeff is also an Equestrian Ambassador for Horses Healing Hearts.

Sugar Erskine was born into the sport and at nine years old was playing polo. His father, Andrew, was one of the highest rated South African players and Captain of the South African team. Erskine made his way to the United States in 1993 under the guidance of polo Hall of Famer Tommy Wayman. Since then, Erskine has become a favorite on the polo circuit in the United States. His sense of the ball and intuitive team play makes him an important ingredient to any team. He won the U.S. Open in 1998 and 2004 and was an Argentine Open finals Runner Up in 2002, among other high-goal career highlights.

Chris Nevins began playing polo in Houston, Texas in 1998 and is currently rated at 4 goals. Since becoming a professional polo player, Nevins has represented the United States in international competition and has played on some of the most prestigious teams in North America as well as Argentina. He has won the Texas Open and Silver cup numerous times.

Mariano Gracida, youngest son of the late Carlos Gracida, is rated at 4 goals. He and his brother Carlitos have been playing since they were toddlers. Father Carlos instilled in them the classical polo playing principles. Mariano is known for his textbook, beautiful swing, much like his famed family. Gracida has won many polo championships across the country, frequenting The Hamptons and Santa Barbara in the summertime.

Kris Kampsen, raised in Tampa and from an equestrian family, has been riding his entire life and at age 15, became a professional polo player. He is currently rated at 6 goals. Kampsen has competed in the United States, South America, Europe, and Canada winning accolades everywhere he played. Kampsen’s flat-out fast runs down field always make him a crowd favorite. Kampsen is also known for frequenting the U.S. Snow Polo Championship in Aspen, CO.

Brooke Banks Wins Adult Amateur 18-35 Section A Championship in First Week as Amateur Rider

Wellington, FL – January 9, 2015 – Week one of the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) continued on Friday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, FL with the $6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m jump-off and Speed Challenge classes held in the International Arena in the afternoon. The jump-off class went first with a win for Ireland’s Darragh Kenny aboard Windbreaker. The Speed Challenge saw a win for Laura Chapot (USA) and Shooting Star. The 12-week WEF circuit runs through March 29, 2015, awarding over $8.2 million in prize money.

Eric Hasbrouck (USA) set the course for the day’s 1.40m competition with a busy schedule of show jumping. The $6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m jump-off class saw 77 entries in total 15 clears in round one. Entries jumped off immediately following their first round where seven more went double clear.

David Beisel and Equine Holdings LLC’s Ammeretto were the first pair to jump double clear over the short course and held the lead through much of the class with their time of 32.69 seconds, but eventually finished in third place. Darragh Kenny came along many rounds later with Windbreaker and took the lead in 31.89 seconds. Victoria Colvin and Karen Long Dwight’s Chanel B 2 jumped into second place at the end of the class in 32.59 seconds.

Class winner, Windbreaker, is a 12-year-old KWPN gelding by Heartbreaker x Farmer. Kenny explained that he was just schooling the horse for its owner, but easily breezed past the leaders to take over the top position.

“This is only the second time I have ridden the horse,” Kenny detailed. “It is trained by Laura Bowery, and it is owned by Kerry McCahill. It is actually her junior jumper. I was just riding it in a class or two for her this week to give it a school.”

“Laura said to me that it is a really quick horse and it is super easy, so it was easy to go fast on him,” Kenny said of his jump-off. “He is super nice to ride, very uncomplicated and very careful. I think he will make a really good junior jumper.”

“I didn’t know the horse and actually I didn’t see David go either, so I just went as quick as the horse felt comfortable with and it turned out to be good enough,” Kenny added of his round. “It is a quick horse and he is very uncomplicated, so I could do whatever I wanted, and it was very easy just to be fast on him.”

Kenny praised this week’s course designer, Eric Hasbrouck, on another great track, noting, “He has been super. Eric is a brilliant course designer. He rode himself, so he knows a lot about it and I think the courses this week have been great.”

Kenny looks to show Windbreaker a few more times throughout the circuit in preparation for his rider. “It will be just doing the same thing, a couple of schooling classes to have him set up for Kerry, and Laura will ride him a little bit as well. Between us all I think the horse should go really well,” he stated.

Kenny has a big group of horses to show throughout the winter and looks forward to a great few months. “I have a lot of good horses for this circuit, so hopefully it goes really well,” he concluded.

Also competing in the International Arena on Friday, the $6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m Speed Challenge was held later in the afternoon with a win for Laura Chapot aboard Mary Chapot’s Shooting Star. Forty-nine entries showed with 13 clear rounds. Chapot and Shooting Star jumped the fastest clear round in 62.14 seconds early in the class. Nicolas Pizarro and Jacobo Zaga’s Calvaretto finished second in 62.45 seconds. Chapot also took third place honors with Mary Chapot’s Zealous in 62.84 seconds.

Brooke Banks Wins Adult Amateur 18-35 Section A Championship in First Week as Amateur Rider

While it’s far from Brooke Banks’ maiden season in Wellington, she is jumping her first fences as an amateur rider this week. When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, she shed her junior status and set her sights once again on the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival, this time as an amateur. Not letting her new title faze her, however, Banks jumped her own eight-year-old Mecklenburg gelding Brodeur to the championship in Section A of the Adult Amateur 18-35 Hunter division.

Banks and Brodeur boasted two third-place performances over fences yesterday and returned today to win both the Under Saddle and the first of two final jumping tests. Trainer Ron Esposito admits that watching the always quiet and regal Brodeur take home the brag-worthy flat win was no surprise.

“I’ve only met two Mecklenburgs, but they were both quiet and consistent,” he said. “I don’t have many in my barn, but I plan to find more.”

Posting consistent top performances, Lexey Hall collected Reserve Champion aboard her own Lacoste. The pair was first and second over fences yesterday and returned to collect third today, as well as fourth under saddle.

Banks has enjoyed her share of early success with Brodeur, a horse she only acquired a year ago from Patricia Griffith and Heritage Farm. Their 2014 goal of jumping at USEF Junior Hunter Finals was realized at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show this summer. “I rode him in Hunter Finals in Harrisburg, was fourth overall and haven’t ridden him since,” said Banks.

A freshman at Cornell University, 18-year-old Banks is juggling a Communications course load and collegiate extracurricular activities, in addition to a robust riding schedule, leaving Brodeur’s schooling to Esposito. “My trainer kept him [Brodeur] in great shape for me. To come back to WEF and win right away is a great feeling. I’m really excited for the rest of the circuit – I am hoping to get down here more than originally planned,” she commented.

Banks is focused on showing consistently at 3’6″ in the coming months and looks forward to making more time for Brodeur. “I love that his stride is big, but he goes slow – every distance is always right there. His jump is so smooth, and he comes up nicely with his knees,” she said.

While an obvious competitor in the ring, Brodeur is a pocket-pony in the barn, according to Banks. “He has the best personality – in the barn he is so quiet and always sleeping,” she concluded with a smile. “He’s like a pet that then goes into the ring and jumps around beautifully.”

The 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival continues in the International Arena on Saturday with the $25,000 Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic at 2 p.m. and the $75,000 Battle of the Sexes, the first “Saturday Night Lights” event of the circuit, at 7 p.m. Hunter and equitation competition continue as well with the EnTrust Capital Small Junior Hunter 16-17 division awarding championships in the Mische Grand Hunter Ring. Wellington, FL — January 9, 2015 — Lars Petersen (DEN) and Mariett took home the win in the first “Friday Night Stars” event of the 2015 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) season. In the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, presented by MTICA Farm, they scored an impressive 78.325% to secure the victory. Mikala Munter Gundersen (DEN) and My Lady followed in second receiving a 74.075% with Caroline Darcourt (SWE) riding Paridon Magi to finish third with a 72.700%.

Petersen and Mariett, veterans to the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, displayed their impressive form, a clear indication of the duo’s long-standing partnership. “I think I said this last year, but it seems like she’s actually getting younger,” he said smiling. “She’s 17 and, knock-on-wood, still so fresh. I don’t work the tests with her very much; it’s more about keeping her fit. She still has a few more great years left in her.”

The pair was followed closely by fellow Danish rider Munter Gundersen and My Lady, who have also enjoyed a successful start to the 2015 season. “My Lady feels stronger and better than ever, for sure. I’ve spent the last four months since WEG working on strength and conditioning,” commented Munter Gundersen. “She’s a hot horse and needs to go out a lot. I have a good feeling that we will continue to improve throughout the season. I’m extremely happy with what we have accomplished this week already.”

Caroline Darcourt also had a great ride aboard Paridon Maji in their first test under the lights. Darcourt, who has worked closely with Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven for nearly 12 years, was very pleased with the performance. “It was fantastic to ride in this ring under the lights. We’ve never done that before, and I’m happy he took it the way he did. It has been a great experience so far, especially to train. The facility is world-class,” she said.

The stands were full for the first FEI Grand Prix Freestyle class of the season, a testament to the growing popularity of the sport. Sponsor Janne Rumbough, owner of MTICA Farm and My Lady and also a competitor aboard her own Junior in tonight’s class, was thrilled with the turnout and the results. “It was wonderful to be here and be the book-end. I was the first, and Mikala was the last. I had an incredible time. I’ve been (in Wellington) a long time, and it continues to grow and grow. It’s just a lot of fun,” she stated.

All of the competitors shared their gratitude with title sponsor Adequan® and Allyn Mann, Director of Luitpold Animal Health, as the company’s continued sponsorship has helped to grow AGDF. “I’m very proud that we are able to support this wonderful discipline. I’m really falling in love with the dressage world,” commented Mann. “As a person, I am honored to be in their presence and our company is honored to do what we can to support their careers and this competition.”

Several awards were given throughout the night, highlighting the dedicated owners that continue make the sport possible. The “Best Horse Owner Award for Prix St. George”, presented by Jill Irving, was awarded to Michael Klimke (GER) for his outstanding first two days of performance aboard his own Freeliner 2. The duo took home the win in yesterday’s FEI Prix St. George class and also finished first in the FEI Intermediaire 1 class held earlier this morning. Irving will also present awards to owners with horses competing in the National divisions throughout the duration of AGDF.

Wellington Equestrian Realty’s Craig Martin and Courtney Varney also presented the “Best Horse Owner for FEI Grand Prix Freestyle” to Marcia Pepper, owner of Petersen’s mount, Mariett. Pepper’s dedication to ensuring the successful career of Mariett has been defined through the mare’s incredible success at the Grand Prix level for so many years.

Allyn Mann presented Lars Petersen and Mariett with the Adequan® Artistic High Score Award for their tremendous performance in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle. “I was motivated to change my music as I had been using it for nearly three years. I felt like there was a need for something new. It is actually quite a lot of work to put something like that together, and I’m so lucky and thankful for my team,” said Petersen.

In the first week of FEI CDI classes held at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival, 13 countries have been represented with 42 riders and 54 horses, truly impressive numbers for the beginning of the season with those numbers only expected to increase as the competition schedule continues forward.

Earlier in the day, Michael Klimke (GER) captured another win aboard Freeliner 2 in the FEI Intermediaire I class, presented by MTICA Farm, with a 72.053% followed by Megan Lane (CAN) aboard San D’Or receiving a 70.842% and Diane Creech (CAN) riding Robbie W to third with a 70.026%.

Jay Holmes Earns Greatest Caballero Title at HSBA Championship Finals

Jay Holmes is competing multiple horses throughout the weekend including Junkyard Cat, Senor Dun It and Ima Downtown Cat.

Sarasota, FL – January 10, 2015 – Being named Horse Show by Appointment’s Greatest Caballero requires the complete package: strong performances in multiple events including herd work, reining, fence work and steer stopping. Over the past two days at the Horse Show by Appointment (HSBA) Championship Double C Saddlery Finals, there was no question that Jay Holmes and Ima Downtown Cat have got what it takes in all categories.

The pair was consistent in all four phases at Holmes’ own Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, Florida, and Friday night Holmes rode away with the 2014 HSBA Greatest Cabellero title.

Winning something such as the title of Greatest Cabellero is nothing new for Ima Downtown Cat. The 7-year-old stallion has multiple AQHA World Championship top placings in Jr. Working Cow Horse to his name, as well as numerous derby wins from around the country.

“We’ve had him since he was a baby. He was raised here [at Triple J Ranch],” said Holmes of Ima Downtown Cat. “He just always tries hard. I thought he ran pretty good this weekend; he always runs well.”

For his victory, Holmes took home the lion’s share of the prize money for the class, just part of $100,000 in prize money and awards presented throughout the weekend at the 2014 HSBA Championship Double C Saddlery Finals.

“Usually I have to drive 20 hours for something like this, for the prize money that’s involved here at this show,” Holmes said. “They’ve done a great job with their show. The weekend shows are really a good format because you can go and show when you want to. If you’ve got a wedding or something to go to – whatever you’ve got to go to – you can make an appointment and show. There’s not a reason that you can’t go show your horse with the way it’s set up.”

In addition to convenient scheduling, HSBA also offers something for everyone and top of the line prizes to all winners.

Prior to the start of the evening’s Greatest Caballero conclusion, HSBA awarded the first of the weekend’s major prize money and the first two gorgeous Double C Saddlery saddles to the winner of the 2K Open Bridle and 2K Open Hackmore divisions.

This year, the win in both divisions went to Jorge Puente. In the Open Bridle division, Puente topped the class aboard Im Dun R U, owned by Jay Holmes, and in the Open Hackamore division he rode Lise Blanton’s WTR Lenas Dun A Shot to the win.

“The first horse is a horse that Jay trained from the beginning, and he just let me show the horse a few times,” Puente explained. “This is the third time that I’ve shown that horse. She was really nice. She was really good for me, and I’m happy.”

Puente continued, “The other horse, I got the chance to ride him about four months ago for the reining part. He’s a pretty nice horse with a lot of talent. I liked him. The first two times to qualify, I didn’t ride him; I was showing another horse. That horse got sick so I couldn’t bring her. So I just got here, and I rode this horse; he was pretty good for me both days.”

Puente is an accomplished horseman, but he is new to the working cow horse and reined cow horse arena. The HSBA Finals mark only his third time competing in a working cow horse event; the first two times came in HSBA competitions earlier in 2014 in an effort to qualify for the finals.

After this year’s final, Puente can’t wait to compete with HSBA again next year.

“They have really good payouts, and they have saddles for every class. It’s a really nice show to come to. I’m coming next year again for sure,” Puente said. “I did reining, but this is the first time that I did working cow. I’m planning to come every year. I really like it.”

The HSBA format, and the show’s motto of “Fun, Fair and Affordable,” make the HSBA events ideal for accomplished riders and newcomers to the reined cow horse community alike. It’s also the perfect introductory horse show program for youth getting started in the sport, and that’s who took center stage for much of the afternoon on Friday.

Friday’s afternoon classes included runs in the Youth Boxing and Little Britches Boxing with youth competition coming to a conclusion on Sunday.

Friday night’s line-up also featured the exhilarating and crowd-pleasing “Down the Hairy Fence” competition. The no holds barred fence work competition came down to an exciting showdown between brothers Rick Steed and Trevor Steed of Steed Training.

Watch Rick Steed run “down the hairy fence” here!

“Everything’s going really well,” said Andy Adams, one of two top judges presiding over this weekend’s show. “The Bridle Spectacular and open horses have been great. We’ve sure seen a lot of new people coming into the industry through Horse Show by Appointment, which is awesome.”

Adams continued, “They’re super accommodating. There’s no intimidation for those green guys to come show here. I like to see that. They have great facilities, and the whole deal is really good. I’ve judged two shows for them, and both of them have been really good shows with good numbers, lots of fun too. There’s very little intimidation. You don’t have to be a really accomplished great cow horse rider to come here. There’s a spot for everybody.”

The HSBA Finals competition continues Saturday at Triple J Ranch with herd work for the exciting HSBA Derby beginning at 9 a.m.

Horse Show by Appointment Kicks Off Championship Finals

Sarasota, FL – January 8, 2015 – After another year of successful reined cow horse competition, the 2014 Horse Show by Appointment (HSBA) season is coming to an exciting finale this weekend at the HSBA Championship Double C Saddlery Finals. The finals kicked off Thursday morning at Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, Florida, and will continue through Sunday, Jan. 11.

The four-day championships offer riders an impressive $100,000 in cash and prizes, made possible largely thanks to the contributions of generous supporters and sponsors, including Double C Saddlery, Triple J Ranch, J. W. Brooks Custom Hats and Skyline Vaquero.

“This is our first year here [at the HSBA Championship Double C Saddlery Finals], and we hope to have many more in the future working together,” said Rebecca Harrell of Double C Saddlery.

As part of the saddlery’s generous support of HSBA and the 2014 championship final, 18 custom designed saddles have been donated for the weekend’s winning riders.

“I told [Double C Saddlery] that I’d like every saddle to be an individual saddle so no two saddles are alike. They did an incredible job of designing them around that,” said Rick Steed, founder of HSBA. “As good as they look, the saddles are just as good to ride in.”

The beautiful Double C saddles donated for the finals are all-around saddles for reining and cutting, designed with much input from Steed himself. They feature beautiful, intricate elephant and alligator print seats and customized designs.

“I think the winners will be very pleased with them. We can do some really neat customizations on our saddles,” Harrell said. “We really look forward to a long future with HSBA. It’s really nice the way they have the set up appointments, and I think it will really continue to be a good business for many years to come.”

Other prize sponsors include custom hats from J. W. Brooks and belt buckles and knives from Skyline Vaquero.

The customized prizes are part of what make the HSBA Championship Finals so special for exhibitors, and another key element is the venue: Triple J Ranch in Sarasota.

At the ranch, Jay and Rhonda Holmes host an estimated 24 to 30 equestrian events a year, and when Steed introduced them to his HSBA concept, they knew they wanted to be a part of it.

“It’s a good concept,” Rhonda said. “We have so many people that work that need to be able to set their time when they can come and show. That works for people.”

Rhonda continued, “We’re very fortunate to be here and to have the finals here. We’ve got a great arena and great boys taking care of the ranch.”

Triple J Ranch and Steed Training stepped up to sponsor all entries for Youth classes at the Finals, ensuring that young riders would have the opportunity to compete.

Triple J Ranch is committed to a long-term program to produce and raise quality Quarter Horses – a mission that has proven quite successful, as the ranch has produced numerous world champions.

Jay Holmes is the rider and head trainer behind some of those mounts, and he is also one of the professional contenders to watch throughout the championship finals. He earned the highest composite score aboard Ima Downtown Cat in the open division of Thursday’s Greatest Caballero competition.

The Greatest Caballero Competition is just one of the many classes held throughout the weekend. Thursday morning began with herd work for competitors in the Open and Non Pro divisions of the Greatest Caballero Competition and Bridle Spectacular, as well as the Non Pro Boxing Bridle Spectacular. Riders in those classes then moved on to the reining and fence work for their respective divisions in the afternoon.

Competition continues at Triple J Ranch on Friday morning beginning at 9 a.m. with first goes in the Open and Non Pro Two Rein competition, Level One Boxing, Open and Non Pro Hackamore, Level Two Boxing, Youth Fence and Boxing and Little Britches Boxing.

Friday evening features Down the Hairy Fence, a highlight of the Finals that brings out top riders for a fast-paced test of horsemanship.

Eric Lamaze and Rosana du Park Win $25,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 1

Elizabeth Boyd and Ghostwriter Top Equine Tack and Nutritionals First Year Green Hunter Section A

Wellington, FL – January 8, 2015 – The 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) hosted it second day of competition on Thursday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, FL, with the second win of the circuit for Canadian Olympic gold medalist Eric Lamaze. After winning the first class of the circuit in Wednesday’s 1.45m speed class with Check Picobello Z, Lamaze topped Thursday’s $25,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 1 aboard Artisan Farms LLC’s Rosana du Park. The 12-week WEF circuit runs through March 29, 2015, awarding over $8.2 million in prize money.

Eric Hasbrouck (USA) is the course designer in the International Arena at PBIEC for week one competition and set another great track for Thursday’s Challenge Cup class. Forty-five entries showed in round one with nine advancing to the jump-off and four double clear rounds. Eric Lamaze and Rosana du Park were first to go in the jump-off and put the pressure on with a clear round in 38.18 seconds that would hold on for the win.

Darragh Kerins (IRL) and Jan Van Tricht’s D Elia van het Molenhof finished second in 38.47 seconds. Ian Millar (CAN) and The Baranus Group’s Baranus placed third in 39.13 seconds, and Denise Wilson (USA) and Blue Gate Farm LLC’s Quidam’s Hero finished fourth in 43.39 seconds. Leslie Howard and The Utah Group’s Utah had the fastest time in 37.91 seconds, but dropped a rail at the second to last fence to finish fifth.

Rosana du Park, a ten-year-old Selle Francais mare (Kannan), competed in Wellington last season with rider Carly Anthony and Lamaze took over the ride in Chantilly over the summer. She is a horse that Lamaze has high hopes for this winter.

“Rosana as well as Check Picobello Z are horses that we bought young to hopefully become great horses in the future, and I think we have achieved that,” Lamaze stated. “Rosana was ridden by Carly Anthony last year, and she brought her along fantastic for me. She gave her such great mileage with great confidence. The mare is now ready to do whatever you ask of her. Picobello is also an outstanding young horse. I am pretty fortunate for this Winter Equestrian Festival that I have fresh older horses and I have upcoming young ones that are ready to really start doing some big things, so I am very well mounted.”

In Thursday’s jump-off, Lamaze and Rosana went first and held onto the lead with some top horses and riders still to come. Lamaze knew he had to be fast to force the other riders to catch him.

“All of the classes are very competitive here. I don’t care if they are two-star, national, or anything, as you see, this jump-off was still fast enough,” he commented. “I think I went quite fast being first in the ring. I think the time was beatable. Some riders came close and some riders had the time with four faults, but I think as an opening WEF class I was happy with my plan. At the end it paid off.”

Describing Rosana’s ride, Lamaze explained, “She is very hunter like. She doesn’t really like to go in a frame or be held together. She is one of those horses where you just let her nose poke up a little bit and give her a little balance and she takes care of the fences. She is really a careful mare. She wants to overachieve if anything. She has a canter that you can just stay in balance and canter along. It’s not a really complicated ride.”

With his second win of the week, Lamaze praised this week’s course designer, stating, “I think Eric Hasbrouck is doing a fantastic job. He is giving us some great opening lines to the courses. They start easy from the beginning and then get very technical as you go around. The time allowed has been short enough that it makes the course quite difficult, but it is really fair. I think for the opening week we could not have asked for a better course designer. Every class starts with a long line or a seven stride. At the beginning of the season that is what you need. We don’t need anything too severe, but it is challenging and the horses are learning, so great credit to him.”

Rosana du Park will now compete in Sunday’s $30,000 WEF 1 Grand Prix while Check Picobello Z will do Saturday’s $25,000 Suncast® 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic.

In addition to the winning portion of prize money, Lamaze was awarded the $3,000 SSG Gloves “Go Clean for the Green” bonus. Each week of the WEF Challenge Series, a $3,000 bonus will be awarded to the winning rider if they are wearing SSG ‘Digital’ Riding Gloves in all rounds of competition with the SSG logo clearly visible.

Also competing in the International Arena on Thursday, Ireland’s Conor Swail won the $8,000 1.45m jump-off class aboard Simba de la Roque, owned by Sarl Ecurie Sens O Riel. The class saw 33 rounds with 16 in the jump-off and eight double clear rounds. Swail finished in 38.01 seconds, just ahead of Laura Chapot and Mary Chapot’s ISHD Dual Star, who placed second in 38.62 seconds.

The High Amateur-Owner Jumpers also got a chance to jump in the International Arena in the afternoon with a win in their first speed class for Emanuel Andrade and Anker. Kelsey Thatcher and Pony Lane Farm’s Athena finished second.

Elizabeth Boyd and Ghostwriter topped both classes today in the Equine Tack and Nutritionals First Year Green Hunters to claim the section A championship. Ghostwriter, owned by Madeline Thatcher and Pony Lane Farm of Bluffdale, Utah, also finished first yesterday in the handy hunter round.

The Section B champion was Kelley Farmer riding David Glefke and Kensel, LLC’s Mindset. Farmer and Mindset finished third in both classes today and won the under saddle and an over fences class yesterday.

With two second place finishes today, Amy Guth’s Bossa Nova, ridden by Louise Serio, ended up as reserve champion of section A. La Bonita, ridden by Scott Stewart and owned by David Gochman, was the reserve champion of section B. The pair finished first and fourth over fences and took home second in the under saddle.

Ghostwriter, an eight-year-old gelding, is a new mount for Boyd after being purchased four days ago from Lane Change Farm. Not only is Ghostwriter new to Boyd, but new to the United States. Having only been here for a little over a month, this was only his second show and he is already off to a great start.

Highlighting Boyd and Ghostwriter’s championship performance was their winning handy round. Boyd explained, “They gave some really great options, and I was able to really go for it in the handy making the inside turns.”

Boyd went on to say that she felt comfortable going into the handy round after talking to Farmer. Farmer had practiced handy elements with Ghostwriter at home and knew he was ready to do it in the ring.

Thatcher is currently a student at Clemson University in South Carolina and will come next week to show her horse in the younger amateur owners. With Thatcher away at school, Boyd was excited to be able to show Ghostwriter this week. After a great first performance, Boyd said, “He [Ghostwriter] is going to be really super in the amateur-owner (division) and the derbies.”

Farmer, who previously rode Ghostwriter, was all smiles as she watched her horse shine with a new rider. “When my horses get to go somewhere else and go like that, it’s a good day,” exclaimed Farmer.

Following a successful start to a 2015 season, Boyd also commented, “The footing felt amazing, and the jumps were beautiful.”

The 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival continues on Friday with the $6,000 Coast Farm 1.40m jump-off featured in the International Arena and the conclusion of the Adult Amateur Hunter 18-35 division in the E. R. Mische Grand Hunter Ring. For full results, please visit www.showgroundslive.com.

Lechuza Caracas Beats Enigma in Overtime

Wellington, FL – January 8, 2015 – In two white-knuckle games Thursday in the Joe Barry Memorial Cup at International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC), Orchard Hill bested Coca-Cola 10-9 and Lechuza Caracas took Enigma 11-10 in overtime.

Throughout strong, consistent play by both teams in the first game, Julio Arellano of Coca-Cola and Facundo Pieres of Orchard Hill put their stamps on the match from start to finish. The game was punctuated by one ride-off after another between the two, both in the number three position. Pieres scored all but one of his team’s 10 goals. Arellano scored four goals for Coca-Cola and teammate Mason Wroe scored three.

Pieres scored the first goal of the day, and Arellano quickly took the next. Chukker two was almost an instant replay, with two more goals by Pieres and one by Arellano. At the end of the second chukker, the score was tied 3-3.

Playing the number two position for Coca-Cola, Sugar Erskine made several excellent plays in the third chukker. He hurtled one long shot after another down the field, one of which was picked up on the near side by teammate Mason Wroe. In another play, Erskine snagged the ball a split-second before it was about to pop over the sideboards. He followed that up with what many considered the play of the day, making the ball his own from the far end of the field all the way to the goalposts. He smacked it in, bringing Coca-Cola into the lead, 4-3.

The chukker played out with Pieres in a trademark display of his ball control as he worked the ball on the near side of his horse for an extended stretch. Coca-Cola’s Johnston, the only female player in the lineup, gave Pieres a run for his money in a long, hard ride-off. He managed to take the ball and flip it back through the goalposts to score.

At the half, Orchard Hill led 5-4. Then four goals in quick succession by Pieres and one by teammate Steve Van Andel catapulted Orchard Hill into a wide 10-4 lead. Coca-Cola poured it on in the fifth chukker and scored four goals, tightening its gap by just two points behind Orchard Hill.

The tension was palpable in the final chukker, which began with Orchard Hill leading 10-8. In the last three minutes of play Coca-Cola came on extra strong, tightening the gap to one point as Arellano swooped in and sent the ball hurtling down the field for a deft pickup by Wroe. After retaking the ball on a breakaway, Arellano scored the last goal of the day.

Pieres said he felt good after the match. He noted that this was the first game Orchard Hill had played in the tournament, while Coca-Cola had already played twice.

That gave Coca-Cola “a bit of an advantage,” Pieres said, adding that Coca-Cola also has top-notch horses and players. “This is a tough team to beat. Gillian (Johnston) helps them a lot, and they know each other. We did pretty good for our first game. We just need to get a little bit better.”

Lechuza Caracas Defeats Enigma in Overtime

The second game, between Lechuza Caracas and Enigma, played out in equally tense fashion. As the window stayed open straight through into overtime. Jeff Hall led the charge for Enigma with the first goal of the game. The second chukker opened at 1-0, but 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero quickly turned the tables, making three goals to push Lechuza into a 3-1 lead. In rapid back-and-forth action, Nero stole the ball from Hall, only to see Matias McDonough snag it away and trade it back and forth with Hall. In superb team play between Hall and MacDonough — which became a repeat act throughout the match – MacDonough scored three consecutive goals, bringing Enigma to a 5-3 lead at halftime.

From that point on, Nero scored in every remaining chukker, eventually making the deciding point in overtime. Enigma retained its position through the fourth and fifth chukkers, leading 8-7 going into the sixth chukker. On an early breakaway, Victor Vargas of Lechuza tied the game at 8 all. In a quick succession of goals, the lead went back and forth between the two teams. Hall made the tying goal as the clock ticked down with 0.37 seconds to go, with 10 all. In overtime, Nero tapped in the deciding goal.

An exhausted Nero said he felt good to have beaten “such a good team,” adding that the entire match was “very difficult.”

The efforts put in by Hall, a standout seven-goaler, were even more remarkable given that he was playing with an excruciatingly painful shoulder from a crash the previous day. “I didn’t play 100 percent because I didn’t feel 100 percent. I only played 60-70 percent. I’m lucky I’m even playing (at all) today,” he said, holding an ice pack to his shoulder.

“Honestly, I thought we played a pretty good game. I thought we played good as a team. We’ve been practicing well together, and the team’s got good vibes on it. We’re respecting each other in our positions and having a lot of fun. I know we’ll get a lot better. I feel like the next game we should play really well.”

The action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m., when Lucchese opposes CT Energia, followed by Audi versus Tonkawa at noon.
