Mill Spring, NC – June 1, 2016 – Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Famoso D Ive Z began Tryon Spring 7 with a strong finish in the $35,000 Horseware Ireland 1.45m Opener at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), taking the speed stake with a time of 64.33 seconds. Mark Bluman (COL) and Hold On Tight II captured second place, crossing through the timers in 66.59 seconds, while Christian Heineking (GER) and AJE Cluny earned third place with a time of 67.66 seconds. Tryon Spring 7 continues with FEI CSI 3* competition this week, highlighting the $130,000 Ariat® Grand Prix CSI 3* on Saturday, June 4, with gates opening at 6:00 p.m. and competition beginning at 8:00 p.m.
Wordley and Famoso D Ive Z, a 2007 Belgian Warmblood gelding (For Pleasure x Radetzky) owned by The Sky Group and Sharn Wordley, made quick work of the track set by Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) to secure the win. The class saw 29 entries test the course while ten combinations finished fault free. Wordley piloted Famoso D Ive Z to an efficient and quick round, which Wordley said will serve as good preparation for the rest of the week ahead.
“I went in with a plan to go as quickly as I could because I knew there were some really fast ones in the class behind me. I had to start fast to begin with because there’s always a lot of speed demons coming in behind you,” laughed Wordley. “I got lucky because there were a few that were pretty fast combinations in here today, but they ended up having rails.”
Impressed with the course design by Vaillancourt, Wordley spoke about the track and how he felt he sealed the win, stating, “Michel’s courses are always great. It was technical, but smooth. You can always ride it well. It was a great course and it had a lot of options, which is what allows you to find different ways to win.”

As for Famoso D Ive Z, Wordley has taken his time getting to know the gelding, as he was only purchased in late fall of 2015. According to Wordley, he can be a bit quirky, so establishing a routine and instilling a sense of confidence has been important over the course of their partnership.
“I got him at the end of the fall and he has been really good. He’s a really good horse and he’s only nine, but he can be a bit spooky at everything,” said Wordley. “It’s taken him a while to really concentrate, but he seems to now be feeling more comfortable and is starting to focus. He’s going to be a really good horse. He’s fast and he’s careful.”
“I think he has a lot of potential to be a real great horse at the top levels. He’s going to do the 1.50m class tomorrow and then on Sunday we have him aimed at the $25,000 Grand Prix too,” he continued.
Wordley is coming off of a strong winter campaign at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) and will look to continue that form through the summer season. With a growing string of top level mounts, he will look to continue securing top placings in the FEI ranking classes, while also giving his greener horses an opportunity to gain experience in the ring.
“Barnetta is feeling a bit fresh this week, but the plan is to jump all three ranking classes including Saturday night with him and then Auckland De L’Enclos will also do the 1.50m class tomorrow as well,” commented Wordley. “I have a great string and they’ve all been going very well to this point in the season. I’m looking forward to what we have in store.”
“This is an amazing facility and the prize money is just fantastic. It is a lot of weeks here and if you can manage to stay focused during each week, it becomes a very competitive facility for all of the riders,” he added.

Kristen Vanderveen Pilots Lucky Strike to Win in $25,000 1.50m Suncast® Open Welcome Stake; Holloway Continues to Win Piloting VDL Bravo S Top $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix
Mill Spring, NC – May 31, 2016 – Hunter Holloway of Topeka, KS concluded a stellar week at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) during Tryon Spring 6, picking up major wins in the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix on Friday, May 27, aboard VDL Bravo S, and earning her biggest career win to date in the $75,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix with Cassevel. Competition at TIEC continues with Tryon Spring 7, featuring the second FEI CSI 3* of the 2016 Tryon Spring Series, beginning on Wednesday, June 1.
Holloway and Cassevel sealed the win, crossing through the jump-off timers in 43.373 seconds for the win, holding off David Blake of Wellington, FL and Binkie in what would have been their third consecutive grand prix win at the venue. Blake and Binkie finished in 44.86 seconds, while Bryn Sadler of Sante Fe, NM and Bon Giorno rounded out the top three with a time of 46.257 seconds.
Holloway and Cassevel are a relatively new pair, as the 2007 Holsteiner gelding was purchased from Derek Petersen less than a year ago. Holloway rode with a confidence that allowed her to excel in the pressure situations that arose in the jump-off round.
“We got him just over a year ago and I’ve taken my time with him and tried to really make him my horse. He’s a great horse and won some in Ocala, FL and he’s just really consistent in the big classes. We’ll do more of the FEI on him this season and try for some good results.”
As the first to go in the order, Holloway and Cassevel nearly didn’t make the jump-off round, as they finished the track with a single time fault, but two rides later, course designer Hector Loyola adjusted the time allowed, moving the pair through to the short course.
“I thought both courses rode so well. I thought there were a lot of turns that you really had to ride smartly,” said Holloway. “There were a few spaces of good gallop track and he has a big stride. I felt like I went in with a lot of confidence because I knew he could handle the course and it suited him.”
Speaking candidly of her biggest career win, Holloway immediately complimented the heart and never-ending try of Cassevel, who she hopes will help her secure top results in FEI ranking classes throughout the remainder of the year.
“This was the biggest class I’ve ever won and it just is so exciting. It’s a great feeling and it’s only the second grand prix I’ve done with him, so this is a big result for us,” she smiled. “I am really proud of how my horses performed this week and I am just over the moon right now.”
“It’s been a very cool week for us. Each one of our grand prix horses has won a big class this past week. I think it’s a great feeling and it also makes you appreciate your horses. It’s such a great opportunity and we’re so lucky to have the rides on these guys. They’re a really special group and I just am so ecstatic right now,” she continued.
Holloway’s groom Gerardo Lopez was awarded with the Groom’s Initiative Award presented by Mark Bellissimo and the Tryon Equestrian Partners in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the care of Holloway’s grand prix mount Cassevel.
“Gerardo is absolutely incredible with our horses and we’re so lucky to have him. He takes impeccable care of them and he’s the only one I trust with my grand prix horses. He understands them and does an amazing job,” said Holloway. “He’s such an important part of our team and I’m so happy that he was recognized for his hard work.”
Holloway Continues to Win Piloting VDL Bravo S to $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix at TIEC
Holloway found herself atop the leaderboard once more at TIEC during Tryon Spring 6, this time after clinching the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix aboard VDL Bravo S. The duo finished the track in 38.426 seconds to secure the win. Bryn Sadler and Cezarro completed the short course in 42.426 seconds for second, while Holloway also piloted Cassevel to third place with a time of 42.426 seconds.
“I was happy with the way the course rode and I felt like all of the questions that were out there on course I was able to answer and had a plan,” commented Holloway. “I thought both of the horses felt really fit and ready to play today in this class.”
The Under 25 Grand Prix Series has become an incredible stepping-stone for some of the world’s most talented riders under the age of 25, offering an opportunity to gain valuable grand prix experience in a competitive atmosphere.
“The Under 25 Series is just a great division. It’s nice having a little separation and it allows us younger kids to get some really good exposure in the bigger rings and atmospheres. In this sport a lot of the top riders are able to stay at the top of the sport for so long; I think the series is really a great way to be able to test the bigger tracks and give your horses some great experience too.”
“These classes give you a sense of confidence that I think is really important when you start looking at competing in some of the bigger classes throughout the year,” she added.
VDL Bravo S, a 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Ephepe For Ever x Urbine S), has been a strong mount for Holloway and the duo have produced several top results throughout winter and spring season. Holloway feels that there is more to come from the pair, as they’ve just begun to find a rhythm this season.
“He’s an amazing horse. Just super brave and super easy to ride. I’m never really concerned with anything on course with him. We got him a little bit over a year ago and it has been a truly amazing experience,” she explained. “It’s a great horse and we have some truly great supporters behind us with Hays Investment Corp. and I’ve had a lot of success with him. I’m very excited for the future and what we have to come this season.”
Kristen Vanderveen Pilots Lucky Strike to Win in $25,000 1.50m Suncast® Open Welcome Stake
Kristen Vanderveen of St. Charles, IL guided Lucky Strike, owned by the Hays Investment Corp., to victory in the $25,000 1.50m Suncast® Open Welcome Stake on Thursday, May 26 at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Vanderveen and Lucky Strike finished the jump-off round in 38.551 seconds for the win, while David Blake of Wellington, FL and Baron finished in second place with a time of 41.022 seconds. Darragh Kerins of Wellington, FL and S&L Through the Looking Glass rounded out the top three crossing through the timers in 41.76 seconds.
Kristen Vanderveen and Lucky Strike
Lucky Strike, a 2006 Holsteiner gelding typically campaigned by Brandie Holloway, found his way to the winner’s circle with Vanderveen in the irons after Holloway was recently sidelined with an injury. The pair bested 10 combinations that returned for the jump-off round, while six pairs finished the afternoon with a double clear effort.
Jumper Highlights
In the CWD Low Adult Jumper 1.0m division Julia Gates of Easley, SC and her own Sierra captured divisional honors for their performance throughout the week. Christine Henige of Maplewood, NJ and her own Fixin’ earned reserve champion behind Gates.
Hunter Holloway of Topeka, KS continued her dominance in the jumper ring, earning the Ariat Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper 1.30m division aboard Avant Guarde, owned by Serenity Ridge Farm. Holloway also collected reserve champion awards aboard Deluca Ace owned by Amy Hunter.
David Blake and Quantero 2, owned by Pine Hollow Farm, finished atop the leaderboard in the Nutrena 1.40m Open Jumper. Ricardo Villa of Campobello, SC and Carolina split reserve honors with Daniel Bedoya of Magnolia, TX and Quattro.
In the BMW Open Jumper 1.20m, Jamie Buis of Weston, FL and VDL D’Inzeo finished the week as champions of the division, while Julio Ledesma of Wellington, FL and Chaco 34, owned by Francesca Damasceno, captured the title of reserve champion.

Daniel Geitner of Aiken, SC and Damocles, owned by Janet Peterson, took top honors in $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby, finishing the class on a final two round score of 181. Daniel Bedoya of Magnolia, TX and Front Page, owned by Eduardo Leon, captured second place with a score of 178,5, while Penny Lombardo of Loxahatchee, FL and Big Girls Don’t Cry, owned by Rodney Bross, earned third place with a score of 177.25.
Geitner and Damocles earned a first round score of 88 and returned for the handy round to receive a 93 to seal the win. Bedoya finished just behind Geitner with a 87.5 and rode to a score of 91 in the handy round. Lombardo finished the afternoon with the highest first round score, receiving an 89, and returned to earn an 88.25 in the handy round.
Josh Dolan of Wellington, FL and Hidden Lane, owned by Page Tredennick, took top honors in the $1,000 USHJA Pre-Green Incentive with a score of 84. Daniel Bedoya and Playbook, owned by Monica Hanks, finished in second with a score of 83, while Bedoya also collected third place aboard Wynonna, owned by Loreanna Andrepont, with a score of 78.
The $1,000 Junior Hunter 3’3″/3’6″ Classic saw Hunter Holloway of Topeka, KS and Entourage, owned by Hays Investment Corp., finish atop the leaderboard with a score of 175. Holloway also piloted The Governor, owned by Hays Investment Corp., to second place, with a two round score of 166. Grace Bridges of Eatonton, GA and her own Sinful collected third place with a final score of 162.
Randall Johnson of Clarksburg, MD and Cantando, owned by Greener Pastures, won the $1,000 Amateur-Owner Hunter 3’3″/3’6″ Classic with an overall score of 163. Kathryn Haefner of Hamburg, NY and Columbus, owned by Kathryn Haefner LLC, finished in second with a score of 161, while Paige Wilson of Charlotte, NC and her own Dicaprio, finished in third receiving a 155.
Jessica West of Charlotte, NC and Orion’s Diamond Ace were awarded with top honors in the combined $500 Pony Hunter Green Pony Hunter Classic 2’3″/2’6″/3′ with an overall score of 162. Grayson Hutchins of Di, SC and The Jaeckle Center’s TJC’s Black Pearl narrowly missed first place, receiving a total score of 161. Mary Hunter Millet of Hillsborough, NC and Just 4 Me, owned by Virginia Rollins, collected third place with a total score of 160.
Hannah Loeffelbein and Watch Me, owned by Two Point Equestrian, LLC, took the ASPCA Maclay, while Ashley Parker of Irmo, SC and her own Calvin Klein finished in second place. Mckenzie Shearon and Chezney, owned by Andrew Kocher, collected third place in the class.
The THIS Children’s Medal saw nine entries compete for the top title, while Peyton Kanstoroom and her own Centrico earned the victory with a score of 87. Rawleigh Harris of Mt. Kelley Farmer and Baltimore Capture Top Honors in $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby; Trapp O’Neal and Quilona Z Earn Victory in $25,000 Suncast® Welcome Stake
Mill Spring, NC – May 24, 2016 – David Blake continued his dominance at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) this past week, picking up another grand prix win aboard Baron in the $25,000 Odom Engineering, PLLC Grand Prix on Saturday, May 21. Blake, of Wellington, FL, piloted Baron to a quick jump-off round, finishing in 33.855 seconds to nudge Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, NC and Basje to second place, as they crossed the timers in 34.69 seconds. Manuel Torres of Leesburg, VA and Christofolini H rounded out the top three with a time of 36.826 seconds. Competition at TIEC continues this week with the start of Tryon Spring 6 on Wednesday, May 25.
Blake has finished atop the leaderboard with three different horses in the past two weeks, earning top finishes in the Tryon Spring 4 $10,000 Suncast 1.40m Open Welcome aboard Bella Donna, the Tryon Spring 4 $25,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix aboard Park Lane, and this past week’s $25,000 Odom Engineering, PLLC Grand Prix with Baron, all owned by Pine Hollow Farm.
“This was Barons third time jumping under lights and each time he’s performed very well,” said Blake. “He loves the atmosphere here and really steps up during the bigger occasions. His form has been great these past couple of months and I knew he was knocking on the door for a nice win.”
The course, designed by Pierre Jolicoeur (USA), saw 20 entries test the first round track, while six combinations tackled the first round with ease, to move forward to the short course. Only the top three finishers completed the evening under the light in the George H. Morris Arena with a double clear effort.
“The time allowed in the first round was a little tight so you had to be thinking about that when you were going around,” he explained. “He [Pierre Jolicoeur] had an interesting open water option in the first round, which he also included in the jump off that was quiet unusual and was definitely something different than what you typically see in a jump-off.”
“It was quicker to jump the open water around the short course, but it made the inside turn afterwards quiet sharp, so it definitely added an aspect of difficulty if you were planning on taking the quickest route,” he continued.
Baron has been a reliable mount for Blake, as he competes the gelding in FEI ranking classes aside stable mate Binkie, who Blake has also experienced success aboard at TIEC. Baron, a 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Ukato x Vera van Veecaten), finished the winter circuit with several top finishes, and Blake noted that the gelding feels confident and ready to tackle some of the bigger tracks this summer.
“He is probably the most rideable of my upper level horses, which makes it much easier to execute your plan around a technical course,” commented Blake. “It is a comfortable feeling for a rider to know you can shorten and lengthen his stride to overcome the more difficult aspects that a course of that size and nature will present.”
With a carefully planned schedule for each mount, Blake will continue to rely on both Baron and Binkie in upcoming FEI competitions that will begin at the venue the first week of June, while continuing to accumulate valuable mileage with Park Lane, Bella Donna, and Casinjo Ex Z.
“Baron will show again next week and we’ll look to secure another strong result in that class. Right now I want to get him more experience under the lights, specifically in preparation for some of the upcoming FEI weeks too,” he noted.
Kelley Farmer and Baltimore Capture Top Honors in $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby
Kelley Farmer of Wellington, FL and Baltimore, owned by Jane Gaston, made an impressive statement in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby hosted at TIEC on Saturday, May 21. The competition, intended to begin under the lights in the George H. Morris Arena on Friday, May 20, was postponed to Saturday, May 21, after inclement weather forced a schedule delay.
Kelley Farmer and Baltimore
Farmer, who has ridden Baltimore to several top finishes already this season, completed the two rounds of competition with a total score of 394 for the win. Jennifer Bliss of Wellington, FL and Poker Face, owned by Harris Hill Farm, LLC, collected second place with a combined score of 378, while Erica Quinn of Maineville, OH rode Need I Say, owned by Kelley Farmer, to third place with a score of 375.
“We got him [Baltimore] I would say maybe midway through the winter circuit in Florida and he’s been nothing but an absolute superstar,” commented Farmer. “He has really stepped up to the plate on all occasions and is just a super horse. He never lets you down and if he doesn’t win it’s not his fault.”
The winning duo earned consistent scores throughout the Classic and Handy rounds, which would ultimately give them a strong hold on the class. Farmer entered the Handy round in the lead aboard her veteran partners Mindful, but a small rider error led to an unfortunate stop on course.
Farmer explained, “With my handy round on Mindful, I really meant to approach the turn the same way I had on Baltimore, but I really didn’t give him enough time and it was my fault. There was a little bit of bad luck there, but I was really pleased with the way that they all went.”
Baltimore has been a strong addition to Farmer’s talented string of top hunters and Farmer believes that he has all of the right qualities to make him a strong contender in some of the larger derby classes approaching this summer and into the fall indoor season.
“He tries so hard for you in the ring and he always seems to do very well. He’s extremely careful and light on his feet so you can really do whatever you want with him in the ring,” she continued. “He’ll do Devon next week and then I’m thinking that I will bring him back for the $50,000 Derby here in Tryon in a few weeks since he enjoyed this class so much.”
For Farmer, the schedule change worked in her favor, as she originally was going to specifically choose which mounts she thought would excel in the electric atmosphere that the George H. Morris Arena provides under the lights. Instead, she was able to pilot four mounts, while Erica Quinn, who works for Farmer and Lane Change Farm, guided Need I Say to a respectable third place finish.
“I was really pleased with all of the horses to be honest. Erica rode Need I Say beautifully and it was really great. We came here last year for the big derby and the ring is just lovely,” commented Farmer. “We came in with a game plan for the night class, but all four horses ended up getting to compete, which was good. They all handled it very well and I was thrilled with everyone’s performance.”
Farmer will be back to the venue with a strong string of horses in just a few short weeks in attempt to repeat derby victories, as she will contest the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby presented by Mirimichi Green on Friday, June 10.
“I cannot say enough good things about this horse show. The ring is fantastic; the footing in beautiful. I thought the jumps looked spectacular. Everyone here at Lane Change Farm absolutely loves showing at this venue and we’re really looking forward to coming back in a few weeks,” she noted.
Trapp O’Neal and Quilona Z Earn Victory in $25,000 Suncast® Welcome Stake
Trapp O’Neal of Hockley, TX and Quilona Z, owned by Carolyn M. Elsey, captured the $25,000 Suncast® Welcome Stake with a time of 37.982 seconds. Manuel Torres of Leesburg, VA and Christofolini H, owned by Andrea Torres Guerreiro, finished in second with a time of 38.093 seconds. Fifty Shades, ridden by Andrea Torres Guerreiro of Waterford, VA, collected third place with a time of 38.72 seconds.
O’Neal and Quilona Z laid down the fastest of five double clear rounds to earn first place, while O’Neal also piloted Capitano owned by TKO Partnership, to fourth place with a time of 40.39 seconds. The class saw 24 entries tackle the first round, which was designed by Pierre Jolicoeur (USA), while 12 combinations moved forward to the jump-off round.

Mill Spring, NC – May 16, 2016 – David Blake of Wellington, FL finished a winning week at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), capturing two major stake classes during Tryon Spring 4, taking the $10,000 Suncast® 1.40m Welcome Stake aboard Bella Donna and the $25,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix with Park Lane. Blake crossed through the timers in 44.15 seconds aboard Park Lane to steal the win from Cesar Almeida and Chaco 34, who finished the short course in 45.556 seconds. Carlos Ramirez and Happy Wandor Van T Roosakker earned third place, with a time of 51.452 seconds. Competition at TIEC continues this week with the start of Tryon Spring 5 on Wednesday, May 18, which continues through Sunday, May 22.
Blake and Park Lane, a 2005 Scottish Sport Horse gelding (Pall Mall x Nistrea) owned by Pine Hollow Farm, have steadily risen through the ranks at TIEC, and have become a competitive pair in many of the larger classes offered at the venue. Park Lane, who is part of the strong cast of Blake’s growing string, also finished in third place in the $10,000 Suncast® 1.40m Welcome Stake, behind barn mate Bella Donna, who took first.
“I had three in the Grand Prix and I thought I had a pretty good chance at doing well because all three jumped great in the Welcome on Thursday,” said Blake. “They’re all in great form and when I walked the course I thought it was nicely set and that it would suit them.”
The course was designed by Hector Loyola (PRI) and welcomed 23 entries who tested the first round, while six pairs moved to the jump-off round. Amanda Flint found herself narrowly edged from the jump-off after accumulating the only single time fault round aboard VDL Wittinger.

“Hector [Loyola] said that the time was going to be neat and it was, but also very quick, just not too tight. I had a fair plan as to what I wanted to do with all three of them. My first ride, Bella Donna, who won the Welcome, had one down, so I knew how I wanted to approach the course for my next two rides,” he continued.
Blake piloted both Park Lane and Casinjo Ex Z to the jump-off round and noted that both horses gained valuable experience under the lights in the class. Casinjo Ex Z, a newer mount for Blake, finished the evening with a rail in the jump-off, which placed them fifth.
“I got to see a few rides before I went and everyone was quick, but the track was quite open. There were some long runs between the jumps and Park Lane has become very dependable,” noted Blake. “I had the last jump down on Casinjo, but I didn’t want to leave too much to chance with Park Lane. I pushed the last little bit to try to go for the win.”
The Pine Hollow Farm team took advantage of their time at TIEC last summer, as Blake amassed some of his biggest career victories in 2015 aboard his top mount Binkie. With a talented string also moving into the top levels of the sport, Blake felt pleased with the performance of his three mounts, and is looking forward to a strong spring and summer campaign.
“These national weeks are very nice, especially because the classes are still at night and you can use some of the horses you wouldn’t normally use for the bigger classes, just because they’re younger with less experience,” he explained. “It’s nice to get them under the lights and this was Park Lane’s first time competing in this type of atmosphere and he really rose to the occasion. I felt like I got another gear out of him during the jump-off.”
“He’s a real trier and gives you everything every time you take him out. He just has so much heart. That’s an important quality to have in a horse when they want to win as much as you do,” he continued.
Blake and Bella Donna Finish With Win in $10,000 Suncast® 1.40m Welcome Stake
Blake and Bella Donna, owned by Pine Hollow Farm, powered to the top of the leaderboard in the $10,000 Suncast® 1.40m Welcome Stake at TIEC on Thursday, May 12, finishing with a time of 42.28 seconds. Bryn Sadler of Santa Fe, NM and Cezarro crossed through the timers in 42.584 seconds for second place, while Blake secured third with a solid performance from Park Lane with a time of 43.573 seconds.
Pleased with his ride aboard Bella Donna in the $10,000 Suncast® 1.40m Welcome Stake, Blake felt the 2005 Warmblood mare displayed her true potential and outperformed his expectations, as it was their largest class together to date and she tackled the track with ease.
“We got her just before the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) and just worked with her during the winter circuit on her rideability in the ring. We kept her in the 1.35m classes and this was her first large class with us and she really rose to the occasion,” said Blake.
“She’s a bit smaller for me, but she’s a very correct jumper and has a great technique. She’s overall just a very competitive horse and is really useful for these types of classes and it was great experience for her,” he continued.
While Bella Donna seems to be peaking at the right time for Blake, he and his team continue to be meticulous with timing, making sure that each horse is performing to the best of their ability while also balancing time off.
“I really try to focus on building them up and doing a few big classes and then they each will get a few weeks off. I’ll show a few in the national classes next week as well, but it’s very nice to have a couple ready and peaking for each class. It makes for an exciting season,” commented Blake.
“We really enjoy it here in Tryon and they all always seem to jump well. We’re going to have more horses at the top levels this year and hopefully we’ll be back to where we finished last season with some strong placings in the FEI classes throughout the season,” he noted.

Francesca Damasceno of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and her own Watermill Time secured a win in the 1.15m Open Jumper presented by Beval Saddlery, besting the class with a time of 58.228 seconds. Bryn Saddler of Santa Fe, NM and Cinderella, owned by Showcase 81, LLC, took second with a time of 64.001, while Sara Green piloted Chanel, owned by Sloan Hodges, to third place.
The Adequan® Open Jumper 1.30m division saw Cesar Almeida finish with champion honors aboard San Quinta SN, owned by Macro Antonio Alencar. Amanda Flint of Long Valley, NJ and Daisy Chain VT, owned by J&J Imperatore, LLC, finished with reserve champion honors.
Miguel A. Ventura of Murfreesboro, TN and Coulance, owned by Kenya Greenburg, took champion honors in the Nutrena Open Jumper 1.40m division at TIEC, while Ilan Bluman of Wellington, FL and Hector by Picobello, owned by Daniel Bluman, earned reserve honors for the division.
Laura Lindner of Warren, NJ and Carrara 11, owned by Helen Krieble, finished as champions in the Tryon Estates Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper 1.20m division, while Rebecca Bergman of Durham, NC and her own Dyon earned reserve champion.
Hunter & Equitation Highlights
John Barker of Middleburg, VA and Carlotta, owned by Ashley Hodges, were victorious in the USHJA National Hunter Derby at TIEC this past weekend, capturing the win with an overall score of 176. Sara Green and Carabello collected second place honors with a 170, while Donald Sheehan of Maryville, TN and Kenan, owned by EHM Equestrian LLC, finished in third.
Barker and Carlotta, a 2008 Warmblood mare, led from start to finish, earning an 88 in the first round, and putting another strong trip in the second round to repeat the score of 88. Green and Carabello finished with an 89 in the handy round, the highest score of the afternoon.
Isabel Stettinius of Washington, D.C. and Balenciaga, owned by Doreen Toben, collected top honors in the $1,000 Junior Hunter Classic, with a score of 166. Elizabeth McKim of Knoxville, TN and Quintessential, owned by EHM Equestrian LLC, finished in second place with a final score of 160. Caitlin Heilferty of Waxhaw, NC and Skyfall, owned by Caron Stucky, took third, with a score of 147.
In the $500 NAL/WIHS Children’s Hunter Classic, Janie Ware of Middleburg, VA and Welcome, owned by Mary Elizabeth Cordia, topped the class with a score of 152, while also taking second place aboard her own Trump Card, receiving a 150. Jennifer Cahill of Charlotte, NC and Incognito, owned by Donna Marie Deyoung, finished in third place with a two trip score of 149.
Elizabeth McKim of Knoxville, TN and Casper van’t Gestelhof, owned by Patricia Garrett, found themselves atop the leaderboard in the ASPCA Maclay, while Lauren Lindner of Warren, NJ and Diomaro VDL, owned by Amanda Flint, finished in second place. Curry Sherard of Spartanburg, SC and Eloubet P, owned by Christi Israel, rounded out the top three placings.

Mill Spring, NC – Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Casper were honored with the Equis Boutique Best Presented Horse Award during CSI 3* week held May 4-8 at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) in Mill Spring, NC. Equis Boutique is sponsoring the “Best Presented Horse” Award at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Horse Inspection during all weeks of FEI-sanctioned competition at TIEC throughout the 2016 season.
Wordley and Casper, a ten-year-old bay Oldenburg gelding (Contender x Baloubet du Rouet) owned by Sky Group, were selected as Best Presented by the ground jury at TIEC, led by President Michael DeTemple of Brazil. Prepared for the horse inspection by Wordley’s barn manager, Charlie Miller, Casper was impeccably turned out and went on to finish second in the $35,000 FEI 1.50m Suncast® Welcome before ribboning in the $130,000 Asheville Regional Airport Grand Prix CSI 3* on Saturday.
“I was really surprised to win the award, but it’s a great idea,” said Wordley in reaction to the Equis Boutique Best Presented Horse Award. “I’ll be in Tryon for nine weeks this year, so all my horses will be braided, and I may even throw on a tuxedo if it means I can keep winning it.”
Wordley was presented with a commemorative plaque by Alex West of Equis Boutique, in recognition of the Best Presented Horse Award, as well as a set of boots from Equis Boutique partner brand Kentucky Horsewear. Already a fan Kentucky Horsewear products, Wordley was very pleased with the prize.
“I was planning to purchase a pair of [Kentucky] boots for this season anyway, so [Equis] saved me some money!” he said.
Casper has been the mount of Wordley for only one year, but he has big plans for the gelding that include the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018. The pair is well on their way after a banner winter that included many top ribbons, highlighted by second place in the $380,000 Douglas Elliman Grand Prix CSI 5* during week nine of the 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).
“I brought him along slowly, but he has jumped some very good classes,” said Wordley. “Now I will start to use him more. He’s smart, careful, and has figured out how to jump the big, wide, five-star oxers, so he really believes in himself. He’s the best horse I have ever sat on.”

Mill Spring, NC – May 7, 2016 – Kent Farrington (USA) piloted the talented Gazelle to another FEI victory at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), as the pair finished atop the leaderboard in the $130,000 Asheville Regional Airport Grand Prix CSI 3* in front of a large crowd of spectators. Farrington and Gazelle demonstrated their efficiency, finishing the short course in 37.367 seconds. Fernando Cardenas (COL) and Quincy Car rode to second place with a time of 39.801 seconds, while Frances Land (USA) and For Edition earned third, crossing through the timers in 39.801 seconds.
The class saw 27 entries test the first round of the class, which was set by Manuel Esparza of Mexico. Seven combinations moved forward to the jump-off round, with only four earning double clear efforts on evening under the lights.
Farrington and Gazelle, who also took top honors in the $35,000 FEI 1.50m Suncast® Welcome on Thursday, found their rhythm early in the first round, tackling the track seamlessly. Farrington stated earlier in the week that the 2006 Belgian Warmblood mare (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Diva ‘Ter Elsen’), who he owns with Robin Parsky, is quickly learning the ropes of the larger classes.
“She’s jumped under the lights a few times and I try to take a lot of my horses and get them experience early on so that they’re used to crowds and larger atmospheres,” said Farrington. “I’m fortunate to have a great team of supporters behind me so that I can go to some of the best shows in the world.”
Saturday’s course found both seasoned competitors and talented amateurs tackling the track, and was designed particularly with that in mind, according to Farrington. He explained, “When you have a field like this, it’s kind of a mixed bag of horses and riders. He had to be clever with how he designed the course so that he has a good competition without giving it away. You also can’t make it too challenging that it over faces the younger horses and riders.”
“I thought that he had a good balance tonight. There’s always the element of a night class and a crowd for both young horses and riders that is a factor, other than just the course alone. I think that was a fair course for the field,” he continued.
While components of the track proved difficult for several pairs, including the Rolex triple combination and a spooky liverpool vertical, Gazelle handled each question on the course with ease. Slicing several fences on the jump-off track, the notoriously speedy Farrington sealed the win with nearly two seconds to spare.
“For me, it’s about measuring the class and feeling confident with what my horse can do and what that is going to mean on course. Samuel Parot is a very competitive rider and that horse is exceptionally fast,” he noted. “They went at the end of the class, so I had to do a faster plan that I would have liked. He’s won a bunch of World Cup Grand Prix classes on that horse and he’s never one not to count as a major competitor.”
“I tried to put enough pressure on him that he may have one down, which he did, so it worked out for us today,” he added.
Big plans lie ahead for Farrington, who was named to the Short List to represent Team USA on their quest for a medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later this summer. Farrington has grown into the one of the strongest riders for the United States and is looking forward to a competitive summer season.
“I’m going to Europe after this and we’ll be jumping in Rome, which will be our next big show. We have a few more that we will use as preparation as well. Hopefully the horses and riders stay healthy and I think we have a great chance in Rio.”

Mill Spring, NC – May 5, 2016 – In his first appearance at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), Kent Farrington (USA) piloted Gazelle to a win in the $35,000 FEI 1.50m Suncast® Welcome, finishing the class in 43.76 seconds. Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Casper crossed through the timers in 47.387 seconds for second place, while Alise Oken (USA) and Hitchcock VD Broekkant collected third place with a time of 47.387 seconds. Major FEI competition continues at the venue with the $130,000 Asheville Regional Airport CSI 3* Grand Prix on Saturday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m.
Farrington, who currently sits in sixth on the FEI World Ranking list, took an efficient and educational approach to the track with Gazelle, capitalizing on opportunities to further the training of the 2006 Belgian Warmblood mare (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Diva ‘Ter Elsen’) as well as improve their communication throughout the course. Manuel Esparza (MEX) designed Thursday’s course in the George Morris Arena, which saw ten combinations move forward to the jump-off round, while six pairs secured a double clear effort on the afternoon.
“Manuel Esparza is an experienced designer and I’ve jumped his courses before in Calgary. They’re always designed very well. I think it was a great class measuring this for the welcome today,” commented Farrington.
Gazelle’s scope and carefulness helped the pair around the short course, in which they finished nearly four seconds faster than second place finisher Wordley. Farrington has carefully built up the mare’s confidence and focused on sharpening her turning ability in the ring.
“This is actually a horse that I showed in a few grand prix classes throughout this season and in the jump-off her turning is a little bit of her weakness,” he explained. “I think we’ve given up some good classes, so we’re focusing on making her training better through those turns. My goal for the jump-off was to really work on her weaknesses and work on my short turns to the jumps.”
As one of the younger horses in Farrington’s internationally renowned string, Gazelle has gained valuable experience this past season, contesting several of the major grand prix classes at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC), including a win in the $86,000 Suncast® 1.50m Jumper Classic in late March.
“She had a good circuit this past winter and we’re still fine tuning some of her training,” he noted. “When we finish here, she’ll go to Calgary to do some of the larger classes there.”
Thursday’s win marked Farrington’s first competition experience at TIEC and he was pleasantly surprised with the vastness of the facility, as well as the major investment the Tryon Equestrian Partners have made to expand the reach of equestrian sport.
“I’ve never been here before and you can see that they’ve put a lot of money into the facility, which caught me by surprise, just that everything is new. It’s very clear that there was a major effort here and a lot of funds have been put behind this facility to support it. It’s very impressive,” said Farrington.

Mill Spring, NC – May 4, 2016 – Kristen Vanderveen (USA) and Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili were unbeatable in the first FEI class of the season at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), as the duo picked up their first major win at the venue since last year, finishing the $35,000 FEI 1.45m Horseware Ireland Speed Stake with a time of 66.25 seconds. Samuel Parot (CHI) piloted both of his mounts to a top three finish, earning second place aboard Couscous van Orti, crossing through the timers in 67.34 seconds, while collecting third on Atlantis, who finished just off the pace in 67.42 seconds. Tryon Spring 3 continues tomorrow with the $35,000 FEI 1.50m Suncast® Open Welcome.
Vanderveen and Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili, owned by Bull Run Jumpers Five LLC, rode a strong and tidy round, which suited the 2005 Belgian Warmblood stallion (Berlin x Bijou van de Vijfheide), as there were several long stretches of gallop track and two key left hand turns. The course, designed by Hector Loyola (PRI), saw 13 clear trips, while just over a second separated first place from third.
“I was super excited when I walked this course because there was so much open galloping space. There was only one related line and this stallion just has a massive step,” she said. “He’s deceptively fast and those hard turns, which you think he wouldn’t be agile with, he is. To that left side, he just flies off the turn and the two places on course today with tight turns were to the left.”
“He stepped in there and felt comfortable with what I was asking of him. He has that big rangey stride and this course was made for him. We changed his bridle this past winter and he’s going in a very plain snaffle. We’ve built a great partnership and I understand him more. We think of each other a little bit differently now and we’re finally working as a team,” noted Vanderveen, elaborating on the progress the duo made this past winter at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
The pair made their career debut together last season at TIEC and captured several top place finishes at the venue before focusing on their consistency and accuracy during the winter circuit, in which they also amassed solid finishes.
“This was his first class out since WEF 10. He’s had a bit of time off and a good vacation because he showed all the way through the circuit. I wasn’t sure if starting right away in the 1.45m was going to be a little bit too much, but apparently not,” she smiled.
In an effort to strengthen their growing partnership, Vanderveen felt the class gave her an opportunity to test Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili, as the pair has not contested many speed classes together. She explained, “Actually, it was great I got to do a speed. I haven’t had a real chance to practice a lot of speed classes or jump-off rounds, so I would love to see that keep developing. He’s a very fast horse; I just need to figure out how to push all of the right buttons.”

Visitors to the facility can enjoy a fun-filled week as the venue welcomes the start of another exciting season of “Saturday Night Lights” events featuring the $127,000 Asheville Regional Airport Grand Prix CSI 3* on Saturday, May 7.
A day of celebration will commence on Thursday, May 5, with the official Grand Opening of new Mexican-themed restaurant, The Siesta Cantina, and The General Store, both recently opened on-site at TIEC. The day will also welcome the first Farmers Market presented in partnership with Growing Rural Opportunities (GRO).
The Grand Opening for The General Store will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, and continue through 12:00 p.m. featuring local product sampling and a formal ribbon cutting ceremony. The Grand Opening of The General Store will run in conjunction with the inaugural Farmers Market. Through a newly introduced partnership with GRO, all produce available is sourced within a 25-mile radius of TIEC, with only farmer grown food products offered for purchase. The 70th Annual Block House Steeplechase at Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) hosted by Tryon Riding and Hunt Club (TRHC) will bring enthusiasm and excitement to the foothills region before the start of the $127,000 Asheville Regional Airport Grand Prix CSI 3* at TIEC following later in the evening. Chris Von Martels and Divertimento Win FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3*
Mill Spring, NC – April 23, 2016 – The second day of the FEI CDI 3* presented by Adequan® at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) concluded with Ashley Holzer (CAN) and Dressed in Black securing another victory, this time in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan® with a score of 71.502%. James Koford (USA) and Don Principe finished in second place with a 66.100%, while Nora Batchelder (USA) and Bahai earned a 66.050% in their second FEI competition together for third place. Competition at TIEC concludes Sunday with the FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan®, beginning at 2:45 p.m.
Holzer and Dressed in Black performed their first FEI Grand Prix Freestyle of the season, riding with poise and confidence in the George H. Morris Arena. The test was a good experience for both horse and rider, while Holzer admitted she made a few rider errors, which impacted their score.
“I would say that I have not ridden this freestyle routine many times and I was just really trying to navigate my way through and he doesn’t know the pattern that well yet,” said Holzer. “He hasn’t ever been out into anything like this and I was just trying to keep him calm and steady through it.”
Dressed in Black has come into his own over the course of the past few months and Holzer is pleased not only with the progression in technique and understanding, but also with his willingness in the ring. The impressive 2005 Westphalian stallion (Dresemann x Sweetheart) owned by Holzer and Dr. Diane Fellows has made a triumphant return to competition and Holzer will look to continue their progress over the next few months.
“There were some mistakes in the twos that were not his fault. What’s amazing to me though is that he goes into that ring, which has all of that feeling and electricity, and he really tries hard. He’s doing the very best he can for where he is right now in his fitness level. I’m just very proud of him.”
James Koford and Don Principe have a longstanding partnership, as the two have been working together for more than seven years. Koford noted that gaining experience, no matter the tenure of the relationship, is still very important to the pair.
“He’s been my buddy for a long time. This is his eighth year at Grand Prix so we’ve had this freestyle since he was nine or ten and now he’s seventeen. We pretty much have it down pat,” laughed Koford. “It’s always fun to ride a freestyle in this atmosphere though. The setting is beautiful and the crowd was very enthusiastic. I’m very pleased with how it went.”
In just their second FEI CDI competition together, Nora Batchelder and Bahai finished their Grand Prix Freestyle choreography with a score of 66.050%. Batchelder of Williston, FL and the 2004 Hanoverian mare (Baroncelli x SPS Rose) rose to the occasion and handled the mare’s anxiety in the large arena well during their test.
“This is our second CDI together and it’s been great to ride in this venue. It’s just unbelievable and the footing is incredible. The first test yesterday, she was a little bit worried with the atmosphere and the flags, but she was more confident today,” commented Batchelder.
“This is our third time riding the freestyle and the music gives her a bit of confidence. I was proud of her because she definitely stepped up to overcome some of what she was nervous about yesterday. It was a great way to finish the weekend,” she continued.
Adequan® has been a longstanding supporter of dressage for a number of years and served as title sponsor for this week’s inaugural FEI CDI 3*. Allyn Mann of Adequan® was on hand throughout the week and discussed the presence and importance of their sponsorship at the facility, as it generates interest and ultimately expands the sport.
“This goes all the way back to the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival and the relationship between Mark [Bellissimo] and me. Both of us really believed that venue would be something special. Coming to Tryon and seeing this beautiful facility, knowing that we’re dealing with the same footprint for the sport, is very special,” said Mann. “This will be a wonderful place for the dressage world to come and it will be a game changer for the community.”
Renowned judge Linda Zang (USA) also commented on the competition at TIEC this week and expressed her excitement with the possibilities and opportunities the facility offers competitors of all levels.
“I think that we had a great group of riders here this week and I was very glad to see a lot of Canadian combinations in this group. This will become a great stop for people traveling from the south back up north after the winter season,” elaborated Zang. “I think we’ll see more and more riders here. I’m hopeful that there will be a lot more American riders who can swing through as well. This venue will encourage more CDI competitions outside of Florida and California, which I think is fantastic.”
Chris Von Martels and Divertimento Win FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3*
Chris Von Martels (CAN) piloted Divertimento, owned by Lövsta Stuteri, to their first FEI CDI win together in the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* presented by Adequan®, receiving a 70.490%. Karen Pavicic (CAN) and Don Daiquiri finished in second place with a 69.745%, while Megan Lane (CAN) and Caravella rounded out the top three with a 69.218%.

Von Martels and Divertimento have continued to solidify their partnership and displayed a continued sense of growth and understanding in the ring. Von Martels expressed his excitement with the progress and noted that he felt like this was the best the two have performed together.
“I was very delighted with him today. He was very with me and I think today was even more electric in the stadium than yesterday, because there were more spectators here this afternoon,” said Von Martels. “He was really in tune with me and waiting on my aids.
“I really believe that this was the best test I’ve ridden on him in the way our relationship has gone so far. I’m very happy. I think this is my fifth show with him and each show you learn something new and take something else away from it. Now, I really would like to keep these nice, clean and accurate tests, but add a bit more power and brilliance where I can,” he continued.
Karen Pavicic and Don Daiquiri picked up second place with a strong showing, receiving a 69.218% from the judging panel. Pleased with their performance, Pavicic felt as though she entered the ring with more horse behind her leg than Friday in the FEI Grand Prix.
“He was much better today than yesterday. I was happier with my ride overall and I still would like to have a little bit more energy and brilliance within the movements. I was going for a clean test and he felt more energetic and in front of my leg,” she elaborated.
“I’m overall really happy with this week. A big thank you to Mark Bellissimo and his team for this; also a huge thank you to Adequan® for their support. Without their sponsorship, shows like this wouldn’t be possible,” she noted. “It’s so impressive and I will come back here with every opportunity for sure.”
Lane, who also placed third in Friday’s Grand Prix, felt that improvements made in the day prior carried over to Saturday’s class with her own Caravella. The duo produced a harmonious and balanced test, only hindered by a small mistake in the one tempis.
“Honestly, I feel a lot of the same sentiments as Chris. I went for a little bit more energy today and had an unfortunate mistake in the one tempis, but she gave me everything I asked of her in terms of the cadence,” explained Lane. “There are improvements in the piaffe for sure, which I was really pleased with throughout the show.
“She reacted really well to this stadium and this atmosphere. This was a great show for us and we were able to execute a lot of the concepts we’ve been focusing on in our training,” she continued.
Lindsay Kellock (CAN) and Royal Prinz, owned by Teresa Simmons, won the FEI Intermediaire I CDI 3* presented by Adequan® with a score of 67.684%. Jessica Jo Tate (USA) and Kynynmont Gunsmoke’s Gideon, owned by Pamela Liddell, finished in second place, receiving a 66.368%, while Emily Miles (USA) and Sir Sherlock, owned by Leslie Waterman, earned third place with a score of 59.263%.
