Riders and Coaches Enjoy Para-Equestrian Pipeline Training Camp and Three Day Clinic

Lyman, Maine – September 15, 2015 – Para-Equestrian Dressage riders enjoyed the Carlisle Academy’s Para-Equestrian Pipeline Training Camp August 25-28, 2015, with 5* Olympic and Paralympic Judge Hanneke Gerritsen from Holland and International Para-Dressage Coach Clive Milkins. Following the camp Clive Milkins, Trainer-in-Residence at Carlisle Academy, conducted a three day Para-Dressage clinic, September 1-3.

Carlisle Academy in Lyman, Maine, a Premier Accredited PATH Center and national leader in grassroots development for para-equestrian sports, has been the educational link for developing athletes and coaches. Experienced international para-equestrian clinicians, therapists, and coaches with their riders gathered for training and education primarily focused on para-dressage. Carlisle along with the United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) developed these hands on workshops that address areas such as: training tips, adaptive equipment needs and type of horses needed for high performance competition.

Hanneke Gerritsen and Clive Milkins each taught daily mounted lessons to both riders and coaches and offered their particular areas of expertise in several presentations including a musical freestyle primer, athlete development plan, and adaptive equipment information.   Additional workshops and lectures featured New FEI Classification Rules, Introduction to Para-Dressage Competition, Video Review of Para-Dressage Tests, and a Coaches’ Forum. Hope Hand of the USPEA shared information on the emerging para-equestrian disciplines as well as regional and national competitive opportunities within the U.S. The Unites States Equestrian Team Foundation also participated hosting the “Ride to Rio” Banquet Dinner, on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Nonantum Resort, where Bonnie Jenkins and Sara Ike of USET joined Keynote Speaker Tina Wentz in sharing the inspiration behind the Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge Fund.

Following the camp was the three day Para-Dressage clinic with Clive Milkins, Trainer-in-Residence at Carlisle Academy in Lyman, Maine. This was the first of many solo clinics in Maine that Milkins will be conducting. Carlisle Academy has recently completed the international work visa process so that Clive may be on site several months out of the year. He is also available for off-site clinics under the Academy’s sponsorship in 2016. Throughout these solo clinics, coaches of athletes are encouraged to attend in order to collaborate on training approaches and strategies for para-equestrians as well as use of adaptive equipment. Clive Milkins is a talented international para-dressage coach with 25 years of experience coaching para-equestrians as well as able-bodied riders in dressage and jumping. Milkins was the personal trainer of Sophie Christiansen, Great Britain’s triple gold medal winning rider at three Paralympics, and has coached several other para-equestrians competing at the international level.

Marci Bender, Equestrian Programs Manager The National Ability Center, attended the Camp as a Coach. She noted, “The Para Equestrian Pipeline Training Camp at the Carlisle Academy was a wonderful experience from start to finish. As a coach of a developing rider, I enjoyed the opportunity to network with other coaches and their riders, as well as gain valuable feedback on how to better prepare horses for my rider. Working with Hanneke and Clive was invaluable. They each bring a unique perspective to rider development and have a genuine interest in helping each person learn and grow. I appreciate the holistic approach of this camp, addressing needs of the rider not only on horseback, but also with comprehensive physical and occupational therapy assessments. Many thanks to the entire team at Carlisle Academy for facilitating a wonderful experience.”

Equestrians and coaches both developing and experienced took part in the clinic. 2014 World Equestrian Games athlete Annie Peavy used the opportunity to work with one of the best in the para-dressage world. She explained, “I had such a good experience at Carlisle Academy. The facility is so friendly and well run. I am glad I had the opportunity to be there and clinic with Clive Milkins. He offered valuable training tips, made me feel comfortable in asking questions, and helped me with my horse Ozzy Cooper.”

Clive Milkins is looking forward to additional clinics. He commented, “I am delighted to be taking on this new position at Carlisle Academy, where they integrate both equine therapy and sports. Para-equestrian sport has its roots in therapeutic riding, and I am thrilled to be involved in such an exciting new challenge. The future is bright.”

More about Clive Milkins:
Clive Milkins is a leading para-equestrian dressage coach from Great Britain. He began work with the RDA (Riding for the Disabled) in the late 1980s after volunteering at Moreton Hall Group while at Warwickshire College. Clive was the trainer for the British team at the 1990 World Championship and Games for disabled riders. He has since coached riders competing at Paralympic Games (Athens and Beijing), European Championships and World Championships. Clive coached triple gold medal winning rider, Sophie Christiansen, at the 2012 Paralympics. Clive has been nominated for numerous awards since his career began: Groom of the year, 2005; The Queen’s Award for Equestrianism, awarded for ‘Outstanding Services to Equestrianism’; and the Kuster BEF Groom of the Year in 2006. Milkins currently travels around the world working with both able-bodied equestrians and para-dressage riders.

More about Hanneke Gerritsen:
Hanneke Gerritsen, 5* Olympic Para-Dressage Judge and Olympic Technical Delegate, FEI Chair of the Compensating Aids Committee, Program Consultant for Carlisle Academy. Hanneke began her career with horses at her father’s farm while continuing a career as an interior designer. Now she spends all her time coaching, judging and performing a number of executive functions in the Para-Equestrian disciplines, including acting as FEI Chair of the Compensating Aids Committee. In addition to judging international qualifier competitions worldwide, Hanneke coached the Dutch Para-Equestrian Team from 2000 to 2004. From 2005 through 2010 she was a member of the ground jury at a number of international championships including the 2008 Paralympics in Hong Kong. She was the Technical Delegate at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. In addition to her Para-Equestrian pursuits, Hanneke is a Grand Prix judge and a selector and trainer for new dressage judges at all levels. She has bred several talented dressage horses and is a trainer and coach to several talented students in Holland. Hanneke gives clinics all over the world.

USEF and USPEA Partner to Create International Para-Equestrian Dressage Centers of Excellence

Lexington, Ky. – The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce its partnership with the United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) to establish International Para-Equestrian Dressage Centers of Excellence (COE). COEs will serve as the foundation to attract new athletes to para-equestrian dressage and develop athletes and coaches for competition at the international level, including the Paralympic Games. There are many excellent centers around the U.S. that offer those with disabilities the opportunity to train and compete. The aim of COEs is to give those that want the thrill of international competition a pathway and an opportunity to learn about the sport of para-equestrian dressage. Owners of existing equestrian training facilities interested in growing the para-equestrian dressage sport are encouraged to submit their venue for consideration. Applications for this prestigious designation will be accepted August 21 – November 15, 2015.

“Our goal with COEs is to increase the pool and ability of eligible para-equestrian athletes in the United States by enhancing the quality, consistency, and volume of education and training available to develop high-performance athletes for greater success in international competition. The USPEA will be a great asset to us as we go through the selection process and refine the plan for these COEs to succeed. If we want to win medals on the international stage we have to grow the sport in the U.S. and also grow the number of owners and sponsors supporting the sport. There are many enjoying the benefits of riding and we want to reach out to them and show them how, with hard work and dedication, they might be winning medals at future Paralympic and World Equestrian Games,” said Will Connell, USEF Director of Sport.

In order to identify more para-equestrian dressage athletes and coaches, the USEF and USPEA will work together to promote the COE concept to organizations who offer equestrian opportunities to athletes with disabilities. The USEF and USPEA will develop a para-equestrian coaching network and coach certification process across the U.S., as well as sport programs and services.

“Through these efforts we will bring in more athletes and more training centers to the sport. Hopefully those that run dressage centers will realize that para-equestrian dressage and dressage require very similar facilities and coaching support,” said Hope Hand, President of the USPEA.

A selection committee will review each submission and may conduct a site visit or interview with the leading facilities. The designation of the first COEs will be announced no later than January 3, 2016. Mark Coley works for the United States Equestrian Federation as the Director of Development. He helps manage marketing initiatives, sponsor relations, and oversee organization programs such as the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. Originally from Buffalo, NY, he grew up riding in the hunter/jumper industry before moving to Lexington, KY to explore further opportunities in the equine industry. Mark has been with the U.S. Equestrian Federation for three years.

Allyn Mann was a trainer and driver in the Standardbred industry for 12 years. He has committed the past 28 years to working in the Animal Health Industry. Responsibilities included starting up businesses, launching new pharmaceuticals, creating marketing platforms, and managing sales and marketing personnel. Allyn currently works at Luitpold Pharmaceuticals as the Director of the Animal Health Division, but worked with Boehringer Ingelheim and Bayer Healthcare managing their equine divisions in the past. Allyn has launched such medications as Adequan® i.m., Ventipulmin Syrup, and Marquis into this market. His primary focus was and continues to be the health of the horse. Allyn enjoys spending time discussing health related topics with both veterinarians and horse owners, travel, sports activities, and reading. Allyn is married to Julie and they have three children, Tyler, Eleanore, and Helyn.

American Para-Dressage Riders Successful in Freestyle Competition in Mulhouse CPEDI3*

U.S. Team Earns Fifth Place in Nations Cup

Mulhouse, France – June 30, 2015 – Mulhouse CPEDI3* concluded on Sunday, June 21, 2015, with the Para-Equestrian Dressage Freestyle Tests. All three U.S. Para-Dressage athletes qualified for the exciting Freestyle Tests including Annie Peavy, Rebecca Hart, and Deborah Stanitski. The Mulhouse, France CPEDI3* was scheduled June 18-21, 2015 with the Team Test on Friday, June 19, followed by the Individual Test on June 20, and the Freestyle Test on June 21. The Mulhouse CPEDI3* Ground Jury includes Kathy Amos-Jacob (FRA) 4*, Jan Holger Holtschmit (GER) 4*, Sarah Leitch (GBR) 5*, Eva Maria Bachinger (AUT) 5*, Sarah Rodger (GBR) 5*, Jose Baud (FRA) 4*, Marco Orsini (GER) 5*, and Genevieve Pfister (SUI) 3*. These riders will stay in Europe where they will compete at the Iberherrn, Germany CPEDI3*, scheduled July 2-5, 2015. Rebecca Hart of Unionville, Penn. and Schroeter’s Romani was consistent in her tests in Mulhouse maintaining the 3rd place position in Grade II. The duo scored a 71.9% in their Freestyle Test on Sunday. Hart owns Schroeter’s Romani in conjunction with Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel. Lauren Barwick of Canada and Off to Paris took the blue ribbon with a 72.5%.

U.S. rider Deborah Stanitski of Charleston, South Carolina and her horse Biara G earned a 67.7% in Grade II. Annie Peavy of Avon, Conn. scored a 68.45% with Ozzy Cooper in Grade III earning a 4th place ribbon. First place in Grade III went to Roberta Sheffield and Double Agent from Canada with a 70.805. The United States earned a fifth place finish in the Nations Cup behind Belgium, France, Canada, and Russia. The United States Team was led by stand-in Chef d’Equipe Heather Blitz. She noted, “Our Nation’s Cup team at Mulhouse showed class, sportsmanship and talent that would make anyone proud. All three of our athletes were competing on horses who are relatively new to them so although they’re already successful, they can all look forward to more strength and development ahead of them. They support each other and encourage other teams as well. It was an honor to be their Chef d’Equipe in France.”

Heather Blitz was not only the appointed Chef d’Equipe for Mulhouse CPEDI3* but she is also the coach of Grade III athlete and 2014 World Equestrian Games individual Annie Peavy. Peavy had three great days with both her horses, Trakehner gelding Ozzy Cooper the Hanoverian horse Lancelot Warrior. Peavy is also a Young Rider eligible for the inaugural 2015 North American Junior Young Rider Para-Dressage Championships but will stay in Europe to compete in Germany this summer. Over the past three days Peavy, Lancelot Warrior and Ozzy Cooper have maintained strong scores in Grade III. Peavy finished the show with a smooth Grade III Freestyle Test.

Peavy noted, “I was excited to come in fourth in such an experienced and competitive class. I loved the way Ozzy felt throughout my test. He keeps improving at the shows and I love how hard he works for me. I couldn’t do this without my trainer Heather Blitz and I am so happy she is with me in Europe.”

Two-time Paralympian (2008, 2012), two-time World Equestrian Games athlete (2010, 2014), and six -time USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Champion Rebecca Hart is used to traveling overseas for international competition and her coach Todd Flettrich has made this journey even easier for her. Hart had three consecutive days of a third place finish in Mulhouse. Hart commented, “I was quite happy with how Romani felt in the arena on Sunday. We had harmony and were right on our music. I was excited to see two judges placed us first, one with a huge 76%. It gives me confidence to have had these results happen on the European stage. My trainer Todd Flettrich was there with super coaching and encouragement to go in and give it my all. I am so thankful for my sponsor Margaret Duprey of Cherry Knoll Farm for making this European tour possible and to Mr. and Mrs. Kimmel, Mr. and Mrs. Ruffolo and Barbara Summer for helping me become partners with my wonderful Romani.”

Hart has been a great mentor for newer Para-Dressage rider Deborah Stanitski who is riding her horse Biara G and has coach Lauren Palmer by her side. The Freestyle Test was Stanitski’s first time showcasing the test with Biara G.

Stanitski responded, “I was so happy to make it to the freestyle round in my international debut. After reading the judges’ feedback I now know where Biara and I can pick up more points and I’m excited to try again at our next competition in Germany in two weeks.”

U.S. Riders will head to Iberherrn, Germany CPEDI3* next to compete from July 2-5, 2015. On June 2, is the FEI jog, followed by the Team Test on June 3, the Individual Test on June 4, and the Freestyle competition on June 5, 2015.

United States Para-Dressage Individuals Complete First Day of Mulhouse CPEDI3*

Mulhouse, France – June 19, 2015 – U.S. Para-Dressage individuals Annie Peavy, Rebecca Hart, and Deborah Stanitski completed the first day of Team Tests at the Mulhouse, France CPEDI3*. These three riders and four horses traveled to Europe to compete in both the Mulhouse, France CPEDI3* scheduled June 18-21, 2015 and the Iberherrn, Germany CPEDI3*, scheduled July 2-5, 2015. The Mulhouse CPEDI3* began with the Team Test on Friday, June 19, followed by the Individual Test on June 20, and the Freestyle Test on June 21. The Mulhouse CPEDI3* Ground Jury includes Kathy Amos-Jacob 4*, Jan Holger Holtschmit 4*, Eva Maria Bachinger 5*, Sarah Rodger 5*, and Genevieve Pfister 3*.

Two-time Paralympian (2008, 2012), two-time World Equestrian Games athlete (2010, 2014), and six -time USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Champion Rebecca Hart (Grade II) with Schroeter’s Romani (owned by Hart in conjunction with Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel) earned a third place ribbon on June 19, with a 69.676%. Hart noted, “We had a good first day, but I know we both have more depth and tomorrow I plan on showing it.”

Grade II rider Deborah Stanitski scored a 66.176% for a 5th place. The first place duo of Grade II, Barbara Minneci and horse Barilla from Belgium, earned a 70.412%, while the second place pair, Lauren Barwick and Off To Paris, earned a 69.765%. Stanitski stated, “I am really pleased with my European debut, I hope we improve throughout the tour.”

Grade III, 2014 World Equestrian Games individual Angela Peavy and her Hanoverian horse Lancelot Warrior earned a 67.184% for a fifth place finish. Peavy rode the Trakehner gelding Ozzy Cooper to a sixth place ribbon earning a 67.026%. First place went to Roberta Sheffield and Double Agent from Canada with a 69.947%. Peavy commented, “I was pleased with both boys today. Our first day out is over and I can’t wait for the rest of the show. It’s a wonderful show and I am so happy to compete at this international venue.”

The U.S. riders are using this opportunity to compete against the best Para-Dressage riders in the world and receive quality feedback from the FEI ground jury.

Lyman, Maine – May 22, 2015 – Para-Equestrian Dressage riders, Veterans, and Para-Drivers are looking forward to Carlisle Academy’s Para-Equestrian Pipeline Training Camp scheduled May 26-30, 2015. Carlisle Academy in Lyman, Maine, a Premier Accredited PATH Center and national leader in grassroots development for para-equestrian sports, has been the educational link for developing athletes and coaches. Carlisle along with the United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) have been developing hands on workshops that address areas such as: training tips, adaptive equipment needs and type of horses needed for high performance competition. Para Pipeline Training Camp for Para-Dressage riders is May 26-30, Para-Dressage Coaches’ Seminar & Rider Education Day is scheduled for May 27, and Introduction to Para-Driving is May 30, 2015. Carlisle Charitable Foundation, an independently governed 501(c)(3) organization and the Academy’s philanthropic partner, supports para-equestrians who participate in Carlisle’s camps and clinics. A scholarship funding request of $250 in tuition assistance can be made through the “Zoe Fund” for Para-Dressage riders. In addition, USPEA 501(c)(3) is offering tuition reimbursement grants of $250 to those that participate in the Para-Dressage Camp. Para-Drivers interested in participating will be given full tuition, through USEF Para-Driving, for the clinic on May 30. In addition to Para-Dressage and Para-Driving, the Pipeline Training Camp is offering a free Veteran’s Information session on May 27th at 2:30 PM.

Expert clinicians include Kai Handt (USEF Chef d’Equipe in Para-Dressage) and David Schmutz (FEI 4* Para-Dressage Judge, USEF “S” Dressage Judge), and Diane Kastama (FEI Para-Driving Medalist, Vice President of USDFD, USEF PE Technical Committee).

Included in the Workshop and Lecture portion of the camps are: adaptive equipment/compensating aids; classification lecture/ability for national classification; para-dressage introduction & rules; video and discussion review of current para-dressage tests; riding mock tests with clinician/judges feedback; and a coaches’ forum.

The focus in these camps is on the grassroots pipeline programs. Carlisle Academy’s Para Pipeline Camps are recommended by the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Para-Equestrian Association for rider and coach development. Eight Continuing Education Units are available to all coaches who complete the Para-Dressage Coaches’ Seminar (May 27) towards a Para-Equestrian Coaching Certificate Program (in development).

Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event Includes Para-Dressage Demonstration

Allentown, NJ – May 9, 2015 – The 13th Annual 2015 Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event, presented by B. W. Furlong & Associates, will include a Para-Dressage demonstration and appearances from international Para-Dressage athletes. The demonstration will occur on May 10, at approximately 12 PM. Para-Dressage riders include 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage Reserve Champion Margaret McIntosh, World Equestrian Games athlete and Young Rider Sydney Collier, Six-Time National Champion, two-time World Equestrian Games athlete, and Paralympian Rebecca Hart, Para-Dressage rider Elle Wooley, and international athlete Ellie Brimmer. The Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event takes place May 6-10, 2015 at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown, NJ. The United States Para-Equestrian Association and these athletes will be on hand to not only showcase their riding but to answer questions about Para-Dressage.

About Gigi McIntosh: Margaret McIntosh broke her neck in the spring of 1999 while riding in an event, resulting in incomplete quadriplegia. Initially paralyzed from the chest down, she is eternally grateful for having the opportunity to regain her mobility. McIntosh had extensive riding experience before her accident: 1970-1976 Working student for May and Denny Emerson; 1976-1979 Working student and barn manager for Gunnar Ostergaard and Ellin Dixon; 1979-1983 Working student/groom George Theodorescu in Sassenberg, W. Germany; from 1987 through 1999 Gigi evented several horses with lots of help from Bruce Davidson, culminating in completing the CCI*** and CCI**** at Rolex Kentucky 3-Day in 1997 and 1998. Six months after her accident she began riding with Jane Cory, the owner of the Cort Center for Therapeutic Riding at Pleasant Hollow Farm in Pleasant Valley, PA.

She initially asked Missy and Jessica Ransehousen for help just before the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and has enjoyed their expertise ever since. In 2012, McIntosh qualified for the London 2012 selection trials including successful trips at back-to-back CPEDI***s in Wellington, FL. McIntosh was also the Reserve Champion at the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championships. Married since 1983, with two grown children (Charlotte (27) and Cameron (25)), and her husband, Brian, a retired banker. McIntosh is now aiming at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro with her own Rio Rio.

About Jane Cory: Jane Cory of Coopersburg, Penn. owned and managed the notable Pleasant Hollow Farms from 1970 through closing its doors in 2007. Pleasant Hollow Farms in Coopersburg, Penn. was known in the equestrian world as the host of many prestigious dressage and combined training events including 20 competitions per year. In 1980 Cory began the Cort Center for Handicapped Riding, Inc. and was the Executive Director there. In addition to her farm and the Cort Center for Handicapped Riding, Cory was the full time instructor at Delaware Valley College from 1996 to 2004. Cory continues to be very active teaching both dressage and eventing lessons, managing Jersey Fresh International, as well as two USEA/USEF recognized horse trials held at the Horse Park of New Jersey. She also manages 2 USEF/USDF dressage shows held at the Horse Park of New Jersey and is an “r” eventing judge.

About Missy Ransehousen: Ransehousen has been involved in the equestrian world since she was a child. Growing up with an Olympic Dressage rider as a mom she knew the dedication it took to get to the top. Ransehousen was a talented Young Rider bringing home the Gold Medal in 1988. Her love for the sport would lead her to multiple wins as an Eventer. Highlights in Ransehousen’s career include representing the U.S. on the 1995 Pan American Games Team and riding at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. In 1998 Ransehousen began working in the Para-Dressage discipline leading her to be selected as the 2000 Sydney Paralympics U.S. Team Coach. Since 2000, Ransehousen served as Chef d’Equipe over four consecutive Paralympics and the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Ransehousen is located out of Blue Hill Farm in Unionville, Pennsylvania.

Once a month, the Dressage Radio Show becomes the Para-Equestrian Show Hosted by Lindsay McCall, of the United States Para-Equestrian Association, focusing on international FEI discipline Para-Dressage. Although Para-Dressage is the main event, listeners have the opportunity to learn more about the skillful U.S. Para-Driving Team, the Para-Reining discipline, Para-Vaulting, and the future of Para-Jumping. The para-equestrian dressage show will feature a line-up of guests including Olympians, Paralympians, trainers, coaches, professionals, amateur riders, young riders, and equine enthusiasts. The intention of the radio show is to educate, inform, and entertain listeners on the para-equestrian Dressage discipline.
