Lausanne (SUI), 26 August 2014 – The stallion depot Ksiaz in Poland hosted the third FEI European Youth Driving Championships which took place over the weekend. A record number of 62 drivers from 10 nations competed in six categories. The new European champions are Lisa-Maria Tischer (GER) in the children’s category; Marie Theres Höllmüller (AUT), juniors singles; Valentine Lenormand (FRA), juniors pairs; Emma Gustavsson (SWE), young drivers single ponies; Marcin Kilanczyk (POL), young drivers single horses; and Zsófia Kovács (HUN), young drivers pony pairs. Germany won the nations competition.

Children

The 13-year-old Lisa-Marie Tischer, daughter of former international four-in-hand driver and current trainer of the German pony turnouts Peter Tischer, finished second in the dressage and fifth in the marathon, which put her in silver medal position before the cones. She drove a double clear round in the final competition with her six-year-old pony Kansas 23 and won gold. It was Tischer’s second European championships; she had finished seventh individually and won team silver in 2013.

Zsófia Szaller (HUN) was in bronze medal position after placing fourth after dressage and finishing eighth in the marathon. Thanks to a double clear round in the cones, she moved up to silver in the final standings.

Local hero Weronika Bogacz lost her gold medal after an unfortunate knock down in the cones and dropped to bronze. The differences between the top drivers after dressage and marathon were all within one ball. A total of 14 children started in this class.

Juniors

Some 24 competitors took part in the juniors class open to drivers aged between 14 and 18. Marie Theres Hollmüller was the only participant who had to drive dressage in the pouring rain, but the 15-year-old talented athlete was unfazed and finished second in this first part of the championship. She took over the lead after a good marathon performance, which she was able to maintain thanks to a clear round in the cones, which she won as well. It was her third European championship start with the 14-year-old Campari 9, but it was her first participation in the juniors category given that her 15th birthday is in December.

Pia-Chantal Nolte (GER) won the silver medal thanks to her third place in the dressage and a good marathon. She finished less than one penalty point ahead of Tara Wilkinson (GBR) who caught up amazingly after placing 11th in the dressage by winning the marathon and scoring a single knockdown in the cones.

Linnea Kristiansen (SWE) was less fortunate as she had three balls down and dropped from the second to the sixth place in the final standings. For the first time, a pony pairs class was added to the European championships. Only starter and therefore gold medal winner was the French driver Valentine Lenormand.

Young drivers

Three sets of medals were up for grabs in the young drivers class. Emma Gustavsson won the pony singles class. She made continuous progress in each phase of the competition. She was third after dressage, second after the marathon and her victory in the cones brought her the gold medal. Her pony Windy Boy Rocket, who used to compete internationally with world championship driver Susanne Ankermark, is 21 years old, the same age as Gustavsson.

Silver went to Timo Eitzmann (GER), one knockdown in the cones costing the dressage winner the gold medal. Great Britain’s individual driver Michael Hodgson put on solid performances and took home a surprising bronze.

Zsófia Kovács (19) from Hungary was the only pair driver and therefore the winner of the gold in her class.

The single horse class resulted in a very tight battle. Marcin Kilanczyk (POL) won gold only 0.09 points ahead of Germany’s Katharina Weber, who was in the lead after dressage and the marathon. Both drivers remained clear in the cones, but Weber had a few more time penalties, which dropped her to silver.

The 20-year-old Polish gold medallist drove the six-year-old Polish bred Prymus. Jovanca Marie Kessler (GER) won bronze thanks to her solid performances throughout the event.

Nations competition

Germany took the lead in the team standings after dressage and never looked back. The German team won with 13 penalty points ahead of Hungary and host nation Poland.

The event took place under ideal weather conditions for horses and athletes. In the marathon, the children drove through four obstacles with four gates. The juniors and the young drivers had to make their way through six obstacles with five gates, designed by Polish O-course designer and the event’s main organiser Marek Zaleski. The addition of a class for single horses to the European championships for young drivers allowed competitors, who do not have a pony, to compete against athletes their own age.

The spectators, officials and organisers enjoyed four days of first class driving sport.

Quotes:

Lisa-Maria Tischer: “I can still not believe that I have won. I just wanted to drive well in the cones and I was a little nervous.”

Marie Theres Hollmüller: “I am very happy and I would like to thank my pony, my mother, and my trainer.”

Emma Gustavsson: “It was my first European Championships and I am very surprised I have won.”

Marcin Kilanczyk: “I did not expect this amazing result. I had my final school exams this year and I did not have much time to train my horse.”

Successful FEI European Youth Driving Championships at Szilvásvárad

Szilvásvárad (HUN), 26 August 2013 – The well-known Lipizzaner Stud Farm at Szilvásvárad, Hungary hosted the successful second edition of the FEI European Youth Driving Championships last weekend. No less than 43 talented young drivers from eight nations competed in the event. Anett Érsek (HUN, Children), Monika Swiecicka (POL, Juniors) and Filip Nowacki (POL, Young Drivers) were crowned the new individual European champions in their respective categories. Austria took the team gold.

Children

Anett Érsek (14), representing the host nation, drove her 12-year-old Hungarian sport pony Suti to victory in the dressage and remained in the lead throughout the event. Érsek has been driving since she was eight years old and has also competed in Eventing. Two highly experienced trainers, the Hungarian drivers Laszlo Juhasz and Jozsef Dobrovitz, helped her prepare for the championships.

Anett Érsek finished third in the marathon and could afford one knockdown after runner-up Marie Therese Höllmüller (AUT) had three balls down in the final obstacle driving competition, which saw her drop to fourth place. Érsek’s compatriot, the 11-year-old Ábel Tabajdi, won the marathon with his eight-year-old gelding Eger and, with only one knockdown in the cones, took home the silver medal. Pierre-Manuel Brasseur (12) of Belgium, son of double world four-in-hand champion Félix-Marie Brasseur drove his pony Mastwood Robin Hood, previously owned by the famous Belgian pony four-in-hand driver Mia Allo, to individual bronze. Brasseur was fifth after the dressage and marathon and moved up to bronze thanks to his double clear in the cones, the only one in his class.

Juniors

Monika Swiecicka (18) became the new European champion in the juniors class, competing with her pony Erdyl Celebration, also aged 18. Swiecicka started riding at the age of six and followed in the footsteps of her mother, Malgorzata Swiecicka, a famous Polish dressage rider. The family owns a stable and Monika is trained by her father, himself a former driver.

Swiecicka made a strong start driving a successful dressage. She finished sixth in the marathon but was able to keep her leading position. After runner-up Viktoria Gössweiner (AUT) had one knockdown in the cones, all Monika had to do was drive safely since she had a 12-point advantage going into the last phase of the competition. Monika Swiecicka proved she was a true sportswoman and fought to the end driving the only double clear in her category. Gössweiner, who drove her 14-year old pony For Pleasure to fifth place in the dressage, was second after the marathon. Dávid Lehöcz (HUN), who celebrated his 15th birthday last week, was in fifth position after the dressage and marathon and moved up to bronze after German drivers Karolin Romahn and Miriam Kampmann had too many mistakes in the cones.

Young Drivers

There was plenty of drama for 17-year-old Anika Geiger (GER), who had won the dressage in her class. She missed on the medals after knocking three balls down with her 10-year-old gelding Power Prince 4. She took fourth place in the final standings. Young Polish driver Filip Nowacki (18) was in silver medal position after his victory in the marathon and drove a clear cones course with his 11-year old pony Lalka. After Geiger’s mistakes, Novacki took individual gold which made him and his team very proud. Jacqueline Pirhofer (AUT) took silver and Jens Chladek (GER) won the individual bronze.

Teams

The Team competition was won by Austria after a close battle with Germany, who took silver. The home side was in bronze and the Belgian team finished fourth.

In this year’s championships, there were 20% more entries compared to the first edition in 2012. The young drivers demonstrated great sportsmanship and fair play throughout the competition. International O-course designer Barry Hunter (GBR) had laid out a nice marathon course with smooth but fast obstacles presenting the competitors with challenging questions. The children competed over four obstacles from A to D, the juniors over six from A to E as well as the young drivers who also competed over six obstacles from A to F. The weather was hot, but the wind made it agreeable for both the horses and the drivers. The numerous spectators enjoyed wonderful sport and the friendly atmosphere contributed to the popularity of the discipline amongst the young athletes.

Quotes:

Anett Érsek (HUN): “We had to drive FEI Test 1 which was a bit difficult for me. During the dressage Suti did her best and was very good. I was really pleased with her performance. The marathon went well too. The first obstacle was a little slippery, but my pony was very fast and she turned very well in the corners.”

Monika Swiecicka (POL): “I was very happy and satisfied with my dressage test and very proud of my pony because she was working very hard at this important competition. The pony showed very good movements during the entire test, especially the extended trot in the dressage. I am really happy with my gold medal after winning silver last year.”

Filip Nowacki (POL): “I had prepared really well and I have been working hard with my pony before these championships. Last year in Wiener Neustadt I won the marathon and I was a bit nervous about the way I would perform this year. But we were successful and I am very happy with my pony and the entire team.”

FEI European Driving Championships for Children, Juniors and Young Drivers to Begin at Szilvásvárad

Lausanne (SUI), 14 August 2013 – The well-known Lipizzaner Szilvásvárad stud farm in Hungary will host the second edition of the FEI European Youth Driving Championships which will begin in just two days on 21 August. During four days, 43 talented young competitors will be battling it out in three classes – children (12-14 years), juniors (14-18 years), and young drivers (16-21 years) – driving either a single pony or a single horse.

Teams from four nations – Austria, Belgium, Germany and host nation and defending world champion Hungary – consisting of two drivers per class, which is the highest authorised number, will be taking part. The combined scores of the best drivers in each class will count towards the team result.

Dávid Lehöcz (HUN), who won individual gold in the children’s category in 2012, will this year compete with the juniors. The 2012 world champions Martin Hölle (HUN, Juniors) and Gilles Pirotte (BEL, Young Drivers) will not be defending their titles in Szilvásvárad.

Szilvásvárad is an established site for international driving competitions. In 1984, it successfully hosted the FEI World Four-in-Hand Driving Championships and the stud farm organises a yearly CAI-A event in all classes.

The dressage and cones competitions will take place in the stud farm’s main stadium, which is located in the city centre. The marathon course will take the competitors out of town through a forest, where some of the six marathon obstacles will be placed. The marathon is designed by FEI O-Course Designer Barry Hunter (GBR), who was also responsible for the course at the FEI World Pair Driving Championships in Conty (FRA) in 2011.

The FEI European Championships start on Wednesday, 21 August with the horse inspection. The children and the juniors, all of whom will compete with ponies, will drive their dressage test on Thursday, 22 August. The young drivers, some of whom will compete with a horse, will enter the dressage arena on Friday, 23 August.

The marathon will take place on Saturday 24 August and will be followed by the final obstacle driving competition and the medal ceremonies on Sunday, 25 August.

The Ground Jury is chaired by FEI Driving Committee member Mark Wentein (BEL) and has Zsuzsanna Mihók (HUN), Karin Schwarzl (GER), Sarah Mullins (IRL) and Henk van Amerongen (NED) as members.
