Spain’s Juan Matute, Jr., Earns Second CDI Win with Don Diego Ymas in the FEI Prix St. Georges

Wellington, FL – January 24, 2014 – Danish rider Lars Petersen and his grand prix mount Mariett won the FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle presented by US P.R.E. Association during the third week of competition at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Petersen rode Marcia Pepper’s 16-year-old Danish Warmblood mare to first place with 77.450%.

Second place went to Canada’s Diane Creech and Devon L. The pair finished on a 73.175%. Mikala Munter Gundersen (DEN) rounded out the top three with My Lady after receiving a score of 72.075%.

The third week of the AGDF, sponsored by the US P.R.E. Association and Chesapeake Dressage Institute, runs through Sunday, January 26. The AGDF hosts nine more weeks of world-class dressage through March 30. The FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle was the feature event of the week, and chilly weather and a schedule adjustment didn’t detract from a phenomenal evening of dressage competition.

“Competition was stellar, the horses were beautiful, (and) the riding was exquisite,” commented Allyn Mann of Adequan.

Mann was excited to see the AGDF continuing to flourish, especially under new Sports Director Thomas Baur’s expertise. “As far as this year versus previous years, I think we’ve already exceeded expectations. Thomas is just continuing to do wonderful things to make each of these events a special evening. I would expect that it’s only going to get better and the competition more fierce because I think that’s what keeps each [rider] going, right? You want to get to the top rung on the ladder,” Mann remarked.

The rider at the top of that ladder has often been Petersen with Mariett, and after finishing second with the mare during AGDF 1, Petersen was pleased to see her getting back in the swing of things.

“That was the first show since [Dressage at] Devon [in September]. Now we have one show with a little bit to practice. When you’re on a roll it always gets a bit easier. I think that’s the biggest thing. Also for her, she was in [this ring] before and she was more tense the first show. I think it’s a combination of a lot of things, [but] the main thing is that we showed two weeks ago and now we do it again,” Petersen explained.

Of Mariett’s performance on Friday evening, Petersen said, “I thought she was really good today. I had a very difficult test: high difficulty with my changes and all my transitions from trot to passage. She was with me today.”

Diane Creech and Devon L

Second place finisher Creech debuted a new freestyle routine featuring Capital City’s hit song “Safe and Sound.” Creech’s music was produced by Karen Robinson, who Creech has worked with before.

“We’ve always liked working with each other. It’s not so easy to find the right music for your horse,” she acknowledged. “It needs to suit the temperament and the movement, and I need to like it and he needs to like it. Those are a lot of things to mix into it. It needs to be happy music, and I like it to be a little bit familiar to people.”

The most important thing to Creech is that Devon L takes to the music, which he appears to be doing.

“I just have ridden [the new freestyle] for the second time now, so we’re just getting into the routine, but he seems to like the routine and he seems to like the music,” she described.

Mikala Munter Gundersen and My Lady put on another good show, placing third for the second time in the FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle. Munter Gundersen was very happy with her horse’s performance, but admitted she committed a few errors that kept them from the top prize.

“She has had some nice consistency in her test. Tonight, she got a little bit hot for me and I got a little behind the music, so I was chasing to catch up with the music a bit, and I got some mistakes because of that. Those were all mine. She really paid attention to me even though she was hot,” Munter Gundersen recounted.

As for giving Petersen a run for his money, Munter Gundersen says it will all come together in a few weeks at the AGDF 5 Dressage CDI 4*.

“I think in two weeks, we’re going to get Lars. At least we’ll try!” she laughed.

Cesar Parra was the top American finisher for the class, riding Van the Man to a 71.975%. He too sees his routine coming along as the horse continues to mature.

“I’m very, very happy with him. He’s a very hot horse. A very special horse; he’s my special child,” he smiled.

Parra continued, “I think he’s a wonderful horse that is maturing a lot, and I really have big expectations for him. I think very soon everything will come together, and everyone will see his greatness in the ring. I’m very proud to be representing the United States with him.”

Juan Matute, Jr. and Don Diego Ymas

Spain’s Juan Matute, Jr., Earns Second CDI Win with Don Diego Ymas in the FEI Prix St. Georges

In only his second CDI outing with Don Diego Ymas, 16-year-old Juan Matute, Jr., conquered the FEI Prix St. Georges presented by Chesapeake Dressage Institute at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Matute, Jr., and Don Diego Ymas won the class with a score of 71.421%.

Canadian Britney Fraser took second with All In with a final score of 70.684%, while Heather Mason (USA) and Zar were third with 70.421%.

Matute, Jr. won the Intermediaire-I during the first week of competition for the AGDF and was thrilled to pick up another small tour victory with Don Diego Ymas.

“It feels amazing. We were not expecting it!” Matute, Jr., grinned. “We were just expecting to perform well, and of course getting a good score is always part of that, but our first goal was just to be good and to enjoy [the test] and create a stronger bond with each other.

“We had some mistakes in the threes, so a few parts of the canter were a bit messy, but I think the overall picture was great,” he continued. “The contact was great; the frame was great.”

Matute, Jr. also picked up a blue ribbon earlier in the morning with Dhannie Ymas in the FEI Junior Team Class. Matute, Jr., admitted that both horses enjoy taking in the sights of the winner circle.

“They like it. They like to win! They like the people clapping and the whole atmosphere of victory,” Matute, Jr., commented.

With the season in Wellington off to an exciting start, Matute, Jr. now looks forward to the FEI Nations Cup during the AGDF 7 CDIO, presented by Stillpoint Farm and Peacock Ridge.

“My goal is to do well in the small tour this season in Wellington, and my goal by the end of the year is to move up to the Under 25 [classes]. We’re going to do the Nations Cup, so that’s one of the biggest goals for the small tour this season,” Matute, Jr. outlined.

Matute, Jr. spent two months in Germany training with Oliver Oelrich before returning home to Wellington to resume training with his father, Juan Matute, Sr. Matute, Jr. enjoys having a trainer-student relationship that runs deeper than most.

“I love it. I get to ask questions 24/7. My dad sometimes wants to kill me at the dinner table because I keep asking questions and asking questions,” Matute, Jr. laughed. “But I think it’s great because besides having that relationship as father and son, we keep that relationship in the ring.”

Competition for the AGDF 3 CDI W continues Saturday morning with the FEI Intermediaire-I at 11:00 a.m. followed by the FEI Grand Prix Special at 3:20 p.m. For full results and more information, please visit www.globaldressagefestival.com.

Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven Clinches Another Win at AGDF 3, This Time with Divertimento

Wellington, FL – January 23, 2014 – Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven continued her hot streak in Wellington on Thursday afternoon, winning the FEI Grand Prix with Divertimento during the third week of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Vilhelmson-Silfven took home two first place prizes with Don Auriello during the first week of AGDF and started off week three with equal success.

Vilhelmson-Silfven and Lövsta Stuteri’s 12-year-old Westphalian gelding topped the class with a score of 75.000%. The top three was rounded about by Danish riders Lars Petersen, who rode Mariett to second place with a 73.320%, and Mikala Munter Gundersen and My Lady, who were third with a 71.640%. Megan Lane of Canada was fourth with a score of 71.020% on Caravella. The top placing American rider was Adrienne Lyle, who finished fifth with Wizard on a score of 70.100%

The AGDF 3 Dressage CDI-W, presented by the US P.R.E. Association and Chesapeake Dressage Institute, runs January 23-26 at The Stadium at PBIEC. The feature event for the week is the FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle on Friday evening from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

Divertimento had a break from the show ring while traveling with other grand prix mount Don Auriello, and Vilhelmson-Silfven was thrilled with the gelding’s first outing in some time. Divertimento occasionally suffers from a bit of performance anxiety, so Vilhelmson-Silfven was happy to feel him relax during their test.

“The best feeling I had was in the canter. He relaxed a little bit more once I got going. It was a bit tense starting, but he felt better and better. I was very pleased with the canter work because that’s not always the easiest on him. I was happy with the pirouettes and the zig-zags, but overall I was happy he was so good in his mind and so relaxed,” Vilhelmson-Silfven commented.

Vilhelmson-Silfven opted out of any freestyle competitions with Divertimento to concentrate on helping the horse mature, a decision that has clearly paid off.

“He feels much more mature. I took a break from freestyles just to get him more focused and trained a bit instead. I think I felt today that it was the best thing to do to give him a little bit of a competition break and get more mature and more ready for what he should do,” Vilhelmson-Silfven remarked.

When asked if Wellington was a good luck charm for Vilhelmson-Silfven, who has had three CDI victories in her first three outings, she smiled, “It must be! It’s been a great thing for me these years, traveling here and being able to compete her in the wintertime, when everything actually stops a bit [in Europe]. It’s been good for these horses.”

Adrienne Lyle was the highest placed American rider after a fifth place finish with Peggy Thomas’ Wizard, another horse back in the show ring after some time off.

“It’s been a year since we’ve been in the ring. We did a national show in preparation for this and I thought today he felt much better, so hopefully we’re going in the right direction,” Lyle detailed.

“I worked just on my technical parts of the test today, making sure I get back in test-riding mode. Riding the corners, riding the preparations. We had a couple losses of balance coming into the piaffe, it was not so good, and then a couple little issues that I think we can get better, but really just trying to get back from training mode,” she continued.

Lyle looks forward to competing the rest of the season of AGDF to get Wizard, and herself, back in top form. With a whopping 30 entries in the FEI Grand Prix, she shouldn’t have any trouble getting the exposure she is looking for.

“It’s amazing. It’s so above and beyond any numbers of anything I’ve been in. It’s so exciting!” Lyle expressed.

Peterson, Munder Gundersen, and Vilhelmson-Silfven all agreed that a class as large as Thursday’s was quite similar to numbers seen in Europe, which provides riders with top tier competition.

“I think it’s great. This feeling that we could look a little bit in the morning and get ready and warm up. That’s kind of the way we can sometimes do it in Europe. I really liked that today, the possibility of seeing somebody else ride (in the Grand Prix class). And great rides this morning as well,” Vilhelmson-Silfven described.

“You don’t get many chances to watch Grand Prix all day, at least I don’t,” Lyle commented. “Not in Idaho!”

Vilhelmson-Silfven was also awarded with the Champion Equine Insurance Dressage Style Award for her winning ride with Divertimento. Gabriella Stumpf was awarded the Show Chic Turnout Award during the FEI Jog on Wednesday afternoon.

Competition for AGDF 3 continues Friday with the FEI Prix St. Georges presented by Chesapeake Dressage Institute starting at 11:05 a.m., followed by the featured class for the week, the FEI World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle presented by US P.R.E. Association from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Diane Creech Makes Strong Debut in Wellington Season Opener

Wellington, FL – January 17, 2014 – Canadian Grand Prix dressage rider Diane Creech was pleased with the two horses she brought out at the start of the 2014 show season for the Adequan Global Dressage Festival 1 CDI-W, sponsored by MTICA Farm and Everglades Dressage.

Devon L, a 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding (De Niro X Wilbranda X Wolkenstein II), placed fourth in the Grand Prix Freestyle on Friday night with a 72.300 percent and earned a 65.880 percent in the Grand Prix on Thursday.

Chrevis Christo, a 11-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (Lavallo X Chrevi’s La Vi X Natador), earned the blue ribbon and a red ribbon in his entrée to the Intermediaire II level at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival 1 National Show. Both horses are owned by Doug and Louise Leatherdale of Leatherdale Farms.

Creech and Devon L unveiled a technically difficult freestyle Friday night with new music and choreography created by Karen Robinson.

“He was quite spectacular,” Creech said. “It was a beautiful, big atmosphere. Devon is starting to like the freestyle. He really gets into it now. I took very calculated risks on the movement and it all paid out. He was really with me and, with the difficulty built into the pattern, it was very well executed.”

She was pleased with the electric atmosphere and the large crowd at the first Friday night freestyle. She was especially grateful to her local friends who came to support her.

“After x/halt/salute, they were yelling and screaming and so happy for me,” she said. “It’s really cool to have friends here. I don’t see them all year, but they all come.”

Her fan club will be there en force when she rides Devon L in the Adequan Global Dressage Festival 3 CDI-W later this month. She has mapped out a training strategy for the show including studying the video of her freestyle, focusing on where she can make things better and visualizing the test.

“It’s a very good training tool to visualize,” she said. “You can’t keep riding the horse through the freestyle, so you visualize it. Then, you ride it and improve it.”

She was also pleased with Chrevis Christo’s debut in his first Intermediaire II.

“It was his first show since last summer,” she said. “He’s ready to be at the level. He just needs a bit more mileage and a bit more experience, but he’s the real thing!”

Creech and her trainer, Lars Petersen, brought the horse up through the levels and they are looking forward to watching him develop. Petersen intently watches her competition and rides every stride from the ground.

“He is an incredible trainer and person,” she said. “It is wonderful to work with him because he’s engaged and enthusiastic.”

Essential to the team are the horse owners, Doug and Louise Leatherdale of Leatherdale Farms. Creech said she sent them the videos of her rides and they were ecstatic over the outcome and the progress the horses have made.

“Without them I wouldn’t be anywhere,” she said. “They are the first ones after the show to congratulate me.”

Creech plans to show two other Leatherdale Farms horses this weekend at the Gold Coast Dressage Opener Festival CDI*: Hallmark 3, a 10-year-old Hanoverian by the Leatherdales’ late stallion, His Highness, and Diana C, a 7-year-old mare by the Leatherdales’ top Hanoverian stallion, Damsey. She finds the frequent shows in the Wellington area make it ideal for her to compete her horses and then give them a rest before they begin again.

‘They all get to have their turns and have the experience and then get a break and then go out and do it again,” she said.

“The horses always come first,” she said about Team Leatherdale/Creech/Petersen. “It’s really teamwork and I’m so fortunate to be part of the partnership between all of us.”

Heather Mason and Zar Triumph in FEI Intermediaire Freestyle at Adequan Global Dressage Festival 1 CDI W

Wellington, FL – January 12, 2014 – Heather Mason (USA) and Zar finished on top of the FEI Intermediaire Freestyle, presented by Everglades Dressage, with a winning score of 72.275% at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AFDF). Second place went to Leida Collins-Strijk (NED) and West Side for a score of 71.150% and Austria’s Katharina Stumpf rounded out the top three with a score of 67.000% on Nymphenburg’s Love.

The FEI Intermediaire Freestyle was on the final day of the first week of the AGDF, sponsored by MTICA Farm and Everglades Dressage. Competition will resume on January 1619 with the AGDF 2 Dressage National and Gold Coast Dressage CDI. The feature event of the “Friday Night Stars” is the Wellington Wild West Show, with exhibitions such as trick riders, comedy acts, barrel racing, roping, Roman riding teams, and more for a full western rodeo atmosphere! The AGDF continues for 11 more weeks of top dressage competition through March 30.

Despite a few minor missteps, Mason was overall very pleased with Zar’s performance during the test. “I had two little mistakes. One going into the first shoulder-in that he wasn’t expecting, so we kind of wavered into it. The other one was the second extended canter. He switched [leads] behind when I brought him back. But he felt great. He was very happy. His changes and his pirouettes were very good,” Mason described.

Now that Zar’s rideability has been solidly established, Mason will start to work on his expression in preparation for the AGDF 3 CDI W, presented by US P.R.E. Association and Chesapeake Dressage Institute, which runs January 23-26.

“What I need to do is get more power in him still. More power, more expression. He’s very consistent. He’s very obedient. Now I just need to get a little bit more brilliance out of him,” Mason detailed.

“I’m going to start working more with piaffe-passage work, which he’s done before, but hasn’t been a focus,” Mason continued. “I haven’t really been using it to strengthen his [Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire tests], which I think I need to do.”

Mason has developed a close relationship with Zar after riding him for seven years. She broke Zar as a three-year-old, even showing him in-hand, and the KWPN gelding recently turned 10.

“We get along really well. He’s a really easy horse to get along with. He’s very honest under saddle, as long as you don’t act too nervous. That’s the biggest thing with him – he’s a big chicken!” Mason laughed.

Mason tailors her care for each horse, including a simple routine of lunging Zar simply for 10 minutes before he is ridden. Despite a tendency to feed off any nerves his rider may exhibit, Mason says Zar is a simple ride as long as he gets his morning lunge. Zar has even played schoolmaster for one of Mason’s young clients. “I have one junior rider who’s been with me for a few years now and she’ll ride him on the weekends – but she always lunges him first. She’s a fairly timid rider, but she knows how to handle him now. She’s learning a lot on him. She does the changes, (and) she’s learned pirouettes on him,” Mason revealed.

Mason and Zar plan to return for competition at AGDF 3. AGDF 2 resumes Thursday, January 16. The AGDF hosts 12 weeks of world-class dressage competition at The Stadium at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, continuing through March 30. Youth Rules at AGDF 1 CDI W as Matute, Jr. and Lane Have Top Scores

Juan Matute, Jr. and Don Diego Ymas. Photos © SusanJStickle.com.

Wellington, FL – January 11, 2014 – At today’s competition at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) CDI W, two young riders made their mark in the show ring. Sixteen-year-old Juan Matute, Jr. (ESP) rode Don Diego Ymas to the win in the FEI Intermediaire I presented by Chesapeake Dressage with a score of 70.579%. Megan Lane (CAN), at 22 years old, took the top placing in the FEI Grand Prix Special, presented by MTICA Farm, with Caravella and scored 68.980%.

The first week of the AGDF concludes tomorrow with a full schedule of national classes as well as the FEI Intermediaire Freestyle presented by Everglades Dressage. The AGDF continues for 11 more weeks of top dressage competition through March 30.

Matute, Jr. and Don Diego Ymas, an 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Don Frederico, have been paired for three years, although the horse has been with Matute’s family since he was four years old. This was their first I-1 at a CDI.

Second place in the FEI I-1 was Heather Mason (USA) on Zar, who scored a 69.789%. Jill Irving (CAN) and Dio Mio placed third after they scored 68.895%.

Matute, Jr. is originally from Madrid, Spain, but now lives in Wellington, FL. Of his first I-1 class, he said, “I think it’s a great opportunity to ride with big riders, like the ones that rode today. I think it was a good test with big judges as well. It was our first I-1 at a CDI, so I think it was very successful. I’m super happy,” he expressed.

For their first two years together, they competed at the junior level and after placing fourth individually in the Freestyle at the European Junior Championships this past summer, they decided to move up to the next level. “We know the horse can do the movements, so why not? It’s a challenge,” he said.

This week was also a learning experience for Matute, Jr. “It’s been a fantastic weekend. We learned a lot and it was great. He’s a bit nervous when it comes to showing and being alone in the ring,” he explained. “The first day he was a bit nervous, but on the second day he was much more confident and listened to me more. We rode more as a couple, more together.”

Megan Lane and Caravella
Megan Lane and Caravella

Megan Lane of Loretto, ON, Canada, and Caravella, a 16-year-old KWPN mare by Contango x Riverman, have made their way up to the Grand Prix level together. After successfully competing at the junior and young rider levels (they medaled six times at the Adequan/FEI North American Junior Young Rider Championships), they moved up to the Grand Prix last year.

“I have brought her along from the beginning. When I bought her, I bought her as a hunter,” Lane recalled. “She’s the first horse for my first Grand Prix and my first horse that I’ve brought along to this point. It’s very exciting.”

Judge Natalie Lamping noted that Caravella’s passage was “a little too open in the beginning,” but that as the test progressed, “it became more closed and got more elevation.” She continued, “I think she did a really good job at setting the mare up and being organized in the test. She hasn’t maxed out yet. There is a lot of room for the score to go up. Sometimes you’re limited by the scope of your horse, but they haven’t gone there yet. That was nice to see.”

Lane agreed with the assessment and while she said that her piaffe and passage were a highlight of her test today, she also noted that yesterday’s “canter zig-zag” was the best one she has ever ridden. “It’s nice when that happens in the test!” she exclaimed.

Don Auriello Shines Bright with Vilhelmson-Silfven in First FEI Grand Prix Freestyle of “Friday Night Stars”

Wellington, FL – January 10, 2014 – The Adequan Global Dressage Festival kicked off the “Friday Night Stars” series with an exciting FEI Grand Prix Freestyle competition and full spectator stands at The Stadium at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Leading the way was Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven (SWE) on Don Auriello, who won with a score of 81.575%. Lars Petersen (DEN) and Mariett scored 76.925% for second place. Fellow Dane Mikala Munter Gundersen and My Lady placed third with a score of 74.825%.

The first week of the AGDF, sponsored by MTICA Farm and Everglades Dressage, runs through Sunday, January 12. The AGDF continues for 11 more weeks of top dressage competition through March 30.

Vilhelmson-Silfven started with a win in yesterday’s FEI Grand Prix class, but with the different atmosphere of the lights and spectators, she felt like Don Auriello handled the change well. “Today was a great atmosphere here. I really had a lot of fun riding in there today,” she said. “I think Don Auriello got a little bit impressed, but then he focused and was really nice to ride the whole way through. It was lovely with so many spectators, and the feeling in here is really great.”

She said of her test, “My highlight was really that he did let me ride, and I had a great feeling. He does everything without a big effort. It’s a really nice feeling when you feel the horse is so mature that you can just ride. I think I had that today. The pirouettes is one of his highlights, and the piaffes.”

Petersen said that he knows his music “in and out.” He added with a laugh, “I also knew exactly where I was in places that I should not have been! But otherwise it’s a great atmosphere to ride here; I think it’s like riding anywhere.”

He noted that Mariett was “a little bit tense, a little spooky,” but that “overall though, it’s the first show, so I was pretty happy.” He continued, “I think the piaffe, passage was good. I normally get really good marks for my music (too).”

Gundersen has been working on her new freestyle routine for three months and had only ridden it at national shows to practice. “My Lady was unbelievable,” she related. “She was paying attention, not looking at anything outside. I’m crazy about the music. I think it suits her very well. I think I had good piaffes, good changes. I was particularly happy with the walk. She was very relaxed in the walk and did very well. It doesn’t sound interesting to be excited about the walk, but it was a bit of a highlight! I’m glad that she’s relaxed enough with the big atmosphere to show a good walk.”

Gundersen commented on the great turnout for the event. “I know there were a lot of people. I was very happy to see that because it’s the beginning of the season. I’m happy we have so many spectators for a dressage show,” she said.

Janne Rumbough of MTICA Farm, the sponsor of the class, noted, “It’s wonderful that we have this here. I’ve been here a long time and seen dressage develop. Look at these riders and these horses. This is what we worked on for so many years. I look at the spectators tonight, and I believe the freestyle is the answer to have people enjoy dressage. What these three people showed today was beautiful. I’m just so pleased and thanks to Mark Bellissimo for doing this.”

Allyn Mann of Adequan, the title sponsor of the GDF, was also on-hand to watch the first CDI of the season. “I would say year three started off beautifully. It’s really humbling to come here and to have the opportunity to support a wonderful event and to see these wonderful riders and horses really embellish the sport of dressage,” he remarked. “We’re excited, and we did exceed expectations already. If this is as good as it gets for the season, I would be gracious and humbled by it. But I think it’s going to continue to improve. As the prize money does continue to grow, I think we’ll see a continuation of wonderful riders and horses be a part of this great dressage world.”

Caroline Roffman and Bon Chance

It was a win on home turf for Caroline Roffman (USA) and Bon Chance today during the FEI Prix St. Georges. Fellow U.S. rider Heather Mason and Zar followed in second place with a score of 69.711%, and Spanish rider Juan Matute Jr. with Don Diego Ymas rounded out the top three at 68.9974%.

Coming off a year of ‘vacation’ for the 8-year-old chestnut gelding, Roffman was very pleased with how he performed for her. “I haven’t shown him for a year, but for him, he’ll get better with each show,” she commented. “That’s what he needs.”

Bon Chance, imported from Germany, was broke by Roffman herself. With her, he competed in the four, five and six year old US championships, with great success. “He was reserve four year old champion, five year old champion, tied for six year old champion. So yeah, he has had a pretty successful career!” she said with a smile.

Although Bon Chance is a sales horse in her roster, she is more than happy to continue showing him, saying he shows a lot of promise in the ring. “He has a lot of swing, a lot of elasticity, and he’s like a metronome when he trots – it’s always the same tempo,” she described. “He’s a funny looking horse on the ground. When people see him he’s long, he has a skinny neck and he’s just a little bit weird looking. But in the ring he presents himself, I think, in a really good way.”

The gelding also offers somewhat of a challenge to Roffman. “He is a little bit of a handful, so you have to take it all in stride. It’s his first CDI ever, it’s his first international Intermediaire I, and I hope this year he continues to develop and get confident in the ring,” she said.

While the Adequan Global Dressage Festival brings out the best in the world to compete, Roffman prefers to focus solely on the horses. “I find myself keeping a little bit of a goal in mind, but they’re horses,” she remarked. “They have their own feelings, their own agendas. You can want anything, you can plan 100%, but if they’re not ready or willing or able to do it? For me, I just focus on developing the horses, and that’s how you know you’re ready. (They) hopefully get better and better as the show goes on.”

AGDF 1 Dressage CDI-W continues Saturday with the FEI Intermediaire I presented by Everglades Dressage and FEI Grand Prix Special presented by MTICA Farm. For full results and more information, please visit www.globaldressagefestival.com.

Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello Claim Opening FEI Grand Prix of Adequan Global Dressage Festival

Wellington, FL – January 9, 2014 – Swedish rider Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello topped the FEI Grand Prix, sponsored by MTICA Farm, with a winning score of 77.670% during the first day of competition for the 2014 Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Danish riders filled out the top three for the class, with Lars Petersen and Mariett finishing second with a 72.880% and Mikala Munter Gundersen taking home third place with a score of 69.600% on My Lady.

The first week of the AGDF, sponsored by MTICA Farm and Everglades Dressage, runs through Sunday, January 12. The feature event is the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, held under the lights as part of the “Friday Night Stars” series at AGDF on Friday, January 10. Gates open at 6 pm, and spectators can also enjoy a musical exhibition by the Frost School of Music from the University of Miami as well as a Western exhibition by reiner Rick Steed.

Vilhelmson-Silfven, who recently climbed to fifth in the FEI World Individual Dressage Rankings thanks to a series of high-profile victories in Europe with Don Auriello, was again thrilled with the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding’s performance during Friday’s competition.

“He competed quite a lot this autumn. I made three World Cup qualifications in Europe before I left. He’s been doing all of those very well. He’s in really good shape,” Vilhelmson-Silfven commented.

“Today, I was really happy with my feeling. The piaffe-passage tour is the one that I sometimes don’t have him on my aids 100%, but I felt like today I could do exactly what I wanted. He usually does it very well anyways, but today it was a feeling more that I could really control,” she continued.

Vilhelmson-Silfven feels she’s gotten to the point with Don Auriello that she can scale back his competition schedule without losing her edge. Following Thursday’s win, Vilhelmson-Silfven will work with a trainer for several weeks before bringing Don Auriello back out for the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W during Week 8 of the AGDF.

“[Don Auriello] has reached the level now that I want to be more restrictive with competing. I don’t need to compete so much I think. He’s going to have a good training session now. I really enjoy having that in this climate, being able to train a lot,” she explained.

After arriving in Florida shortly before Christmas, Vilhelmson-Silfven is looking forward to a season far from the harsh Swedish winter.

“It’s super to be able to train them and ride them [in the Florida weather]. How they feel in their body, in their muscles, is so different when it’s very cold. [The horses that compete in Florida] are in much better shape than the ones that stayed under the winter in Europe – in Sweden anyway,” Vilhelmson-Silfven described.

Vilhelmson-Silfven was also presented with the Champion Equine Insurance Dressage Style Award for her ride with Don Auriello, who is owned by Lövsta Stuteri.

The AGDF provides world-class dressage riders like Vilhelmson-Silfven a warm winter respite in prime competition and training conditions over 12 weeks of top-level competition January 9 – March 30, 2014. AGDF 1 Dressage CDI-W continues Friday morning with the FEI Prix St. Georges, presented by Everglades Dressage, and the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle presented by MTICA Farm as the evening’s main event with gates open at 6 pm.

Palm Beach Dressage Derby Scheduled to Join 2014 Adequan Global Dressage Festival

Wellington, FL – November 15, 2013 – Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP) is pleased to announce that the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI W is scheduled to be held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) on February 27 to March 2, pending approval from the USEF. The event joins an incredible line-up of dressage competition in the Adequan Global Dressage Festival season.

The Palm Beach Dressage Derby, which has been held since 1983, is a mainstay on the international dressage calendar in the United States.

“We are extremely pleased that we can keep the Palm Beach Dressage Derby on the calendar and bring it to PBIEC,” said ESP CEO Mark Bellissimo. “The event has a great tradition, and we want to maintain its legacy. New this year to the Adequan Global Dressage Festival is The Mary Anne McPhail Cup, which will be awarded to the best professional and amateur riders of the circuit. Bellissimo stated, “We want to honor the McPhails for everything that they have done for dressage with this prestigious award.”
