Classic Empire Heads Entries for Kentucky Derby

Credit: Paul Miles via Twitter.

Classic Empire is set to begin his Classic campaign this year in the Kentucky Derby, where he is the bookmakers’ favourite to prevail in the 2000m contest at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Mark Casse-trained horse was one of the most impressive two-year-colts last year in the United States where he won on three of his four starts at the racecourse, including the Grade One Clairborne Breeders’ Futurity Stakes at Keeneland and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita during the World Championship meeting in November.

Classic Empire has already had the benefit of two starts in 2017. He made his seasonal reappearance at Gulfstream Park where he could only come home third in the Grade Two Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes when going off at -200. He did though come on for that outing on his most recent run at Churchill Downs when he won the Grade Three Bashford Manor Stakes.

Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner is a best price of +700 for victory in the first leg of the Triple Crown; however, if you are looking to back Casse’s talented horse, check out comparison sites like BritishBookmakers.co.uk who collate the best sign-up offers and odds for the meeting at Churchill Downs next month.

Always Dreaming is unbeaten since moving to Todd Pletcher’s yard and is also set to line up in the Kentucky Derby for his connections. The three-year-old ran only once last season, where he finished third at Belmont Park. He’s already had two outings in 2017 as he scored on his return at Gulfstream Park, where he stepped up to 1800m for the first time in his career.

Pletcher’s colt made a quick return at Gulfstream Park to land the Grade One Florida Derby by an impressive five lengths. He was ridden that day by John Velazquez, who tracked the leaders early on and made a challenge in the home straight where his horse picked up really well.

Always Dreaming is available at +800 in the latest betting, at the time of writing. Pletcher is bidding for his second Kentucky Derby winner as he trained Super Saver to success in 2010.

Another horse who is expected to be in contention at Churchill Downs is Irish War Cry for H. Graham Motion, who last won this race in 2011 with Animal Kingdom. The horse, whose sire is Curlin, has already recorded a couple of Grade Two successes.

After making his a winning debut Laurel Park, Motion’s colt went straight into the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes where he upset the short-price favourite Classic Empire. A month later he ran a below-par performance as he came home down the field at the same course in another Grade Two contest.

Irish War Cry looked right back to his best earlier this month in the Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct as he finished the strongest of the eight runners to claim success with Rajov Maragh on his back.

This year’s Kentucky Derby will be the 143rd renewal of the race and will take place on May 6 where there are currently 23 entries remaining with just two weeks to go.

First Entries Announced for Royal Windsor Horse Show 2017

Organisers of Royal Windsor Horse Show have announced an outstanding list of national competitors for this year’s Show, which takes place in the private grounds of Windsor Castle from 10-14 May 2017.

National Showing

The Showing line-up includes stars such as Allister Hood, competing aboard Our Cashel Blue in a bid to defend their title as Lightweight Cob. The duo has celebrated a phenomenal year after being crowned Supreme Champion at Horse of the Year Show in 2016. Jayne Ross will be back in action with 16 rides including Cob in Hood, with whom she will be seeking to reverse last year’s Lightweight Cob outcome, after narrowly missing out to Hood and Our Cashel Blue.

Ross spoke in anticipation of the event. “There’s an aura about Windsor, from the moment you arrive. There’s just nothing like it; it’s so special.”

Helen Newbold, well-known for her career in retraining racehorses, will be returning with her horse Tycoons Reflection to compete for the RoR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse Championship, after narrowly missing out on first place at last year’s event.

Top producer, Robert Walker, will be aiming to repeat his 2015 success aboard Randlestown Rolex, when the pair won the Novice Cob. The partnership came a close second in the Lightweight Cob last year and will be returning to this year’s edition with the hope of moving up the leader-board to claim the title.

Royal Windsor Horse Show Director, Simon Brooks-Ward, said: “Showing is of great importance to the event; it’s very good to see the level of entries growing year-on-year, with the standard of competition increasing with the Show’s popularity.”

National Show Jumping

Alongside the 5* International Jumping classes, the National Jumping line-up will have spectators glued to the action as many of the world’s top riders announce their attendance, including Olympic Team Gold Medallist Ben Maher (GBR), who will be joined by a field of fellow Brits in the National classes. The notoriously speedy Guy Williams is set to grip spectators as he will be attempting a one-two in the Olympic Star Spotters Competition for 6-Year-Old Horses. Adding to the list of contenders will be husband and wife, William and Pippa Funnell. Also, joining Pippa from the world of eventing will be Bumble Thomas and Emily Llewellyn.

Britain’s leading-female Show Jumper, Laura Renwick, will be returning in hope of matching last year’s success. Renwick will be battling against seasoned competitor and former Olympian Tim Stockdale (GBR), who is set to return to the Show, along with rising star and son, Joseph, who will both be contending for top place in the Grades B & C Handicap Jumping Competition.

Another family with more than one representative is the Breens. Brothers Trevor and Shane have a longstanding success in Show Jumping, Shane a previous winner of the Royal Windsor Horse Show Grand Prix, and Trevor a two-time winner of the Hickstead Derby.

Alfie Bradstock is also from a family with strong equestrian heritage, his father being Cheltenham Gold Cup winning National Hunt Trainer Mark Bradstock. Competing at top level since the age of 14, Alfie became the first junior rider to represent Britain at Eventing and Show Jumping in the same year, winning European Eventing gold medals at both Under-16 and Under 18 levels. With his focus now turned to Show Jumping, Alfie will be riding at Royal Windsor for former Team GB Show Jumpers Graham and Tina Fletcher.

Tickets to watch this year’s action can be purchased at www.rwhs.co.uk or by telephoning the box office on 0844 581 4960 from the UK and +44 (0)121 7966290 internationally. Local residents can purchase tickets by contacting Windsor Information Centre on 01753 743589.

Heather Blitz and Praestemarkens Quatero Win Small Tour to Conclude Tryon Spring FEI CDI 3*

Mill Spring, NC – April 23, 2017 – Heather Blitz (USA) and Praestemarkens Quatero made an impressive FEI CDI debut in Small Tour competition at the Tryon Spring CDI 3* presented by Adequan® at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Blitz and Praestemarkens Quatero received a 74.250% to secure the win in the FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan®. Christilot Boylen (CAN) and Rockylane took second place with a 72.600% while Ashley Holzer (USA) and Radondo finished in third place with a 71.775% on the final day of competition.

Blitz and Praestemarkens Quatero, a 2009 Danish Warmblood gelding (Quarterback x Rohdiamant) owned by Blitz, made their first FEI CDI appearance this week, taking all three classes in the Small Tour including the FEI Prix St. Georges, FEI Intermediaire I, and FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle. Blitz has had the ride since 2015 and has taken her time solidifying their communication and understanding together before pursuing a competition schedule.

“I was a little funny getting started today and was a bit behind the music from the beginning, so I played a bit of catch up. I wasn’t sure how he would do in the rain, but quite frankly, we have such a great trust in each other now that if I tell him it’s going to be okay he goes with it,” commented Blitz. “There were a few little errors in the test, but for his first time in a CDI and to do the freestyle, which we only finished two weeks ago, is just amazing. I couldn’t be happier.”

Blitz has been working patiently and diligently, earning the trust of Praestemarkens Quatero, who she feels has an immense talent and strength that will make him a top mount in the future. While it’s taken time for Blitz to feel completely confident in bringing the gelding out, over the past month he proved that he was ready to be tested in a larger competition atmosphere.

“I got him two years ago and during that time we have gone through a lot. It’s been all about learning to trust each other from day one. Whatever he has in his mind is what he’s passionate about, so now that I’ve gained his trust he passionately wants to please me,” she elaborated. “His willingness to listen to me was phenomenal this week; especially knowing that deep down he was very nervous. He stuck with me and I thought the strength for us this week was his steadiness. He flows really well and he’s a powerful horse, which comes across quite impressively in the ring.”

It was an instant connection for Blitz when she tried the gelding in Europe and has really seen their relationship blossom over the past year. His steady and willing demeanor helped the pair pull together one of their best performances together to date.

“The first time I sat on him, I knew he was the one. We clicked right away. Our partnership and his stability has really shown this week. The strengths outweighed the glitches throughout the competition. I came in super positive about this show because of the way that he’s been going at home and how consistent he’s been.”

Having worked with renowned freestyle choreographer and composer Marlene Whitaker for over a decade, Blitz felt confident that the pair’s music selection would show off the quality of Praestemarkens Quatero’s movements and expression. Whitaker helped Blitz pull together the routine, which was only completed two weeks ago for the pair to begin practicing.

“Marlene Whitaker has been working with me for almost ten years and I completely trust her opinion and judgment when it comes to choosing music. She gave me three adaptions to look at and as soon as I heard this one, I knew that it was it. The choreography is very fitting for him and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how it went today.”

Ashley Holzer Captures FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI 3* aboard Havanna 145

Page and Dr. House 2 Victorious in FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3*

Mill Spring, NC – April 22, 2017 – Ashley Holzer (USA) and Havanna 145 rode to their first major international win in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle presented by Adequan® at the Tryon Spring Dressage I CDI 3* hosted at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Holzer and Havanna 145 scored a 73.735% for the win, while Megan Lane (CAN) and San D’Or rode to second place, receiving a 72.660%. P. J. Rizvi (USA) and Breaking Dawn rounded out the top three finishers earning a 71.650%.

Holzer, who is representing the United States for the first time internationally after representing Canada at the highest levels of competition for majority of her career, guided the mare to an impressive win in the George H. Morris Arena. In their Large Tour debut, the pair picked up a seventh place finish in the FEI Grand Prix presented by Adequan® before returning to finish atop the class.

“This was the choreography that we used with Dressed In Black, so I know the pattern really well. I changed a few things for her and did change a bit of the music to suit her better,” explained Holzer. “I’m very aware of the music and I think the difficult part of the freestyle is the positioning of each movement. You have to have the movements exactly where the music is going to be and I thought that it would be a good introductory routine for us.”

The 2007 Hanoverian mare (Hochadel x Rodgau) owned by Diane Fellows, is a new mount for Holzer, as she only arrived to the United States in December 2016. Working on strength and conditioning throughout the winter season, as well as getting to know Havanna 145’s personality, Holzer feels that the mare is something incredibly special for the future.

“I was thrilled with today because it felt like she totally understood what I was asking her. I now am seeing that if she understands what I’m asking her to do, she’s going to do her best to do it. There’s a willingness and trust there that is very promising,” she added.

While Havanna 145 had only shown in the Small Tour in Europe before her purchase, Holzer felt confident the mare had the talent and drive necessary to move to Large Tour quickly. Holzer elaborated, “This is our first CDI together and really only one of the first few shows that we’ve done. Her personality is amazing. She just is one of those horses that only gets better every single day. Every time you see her it’s just better.”

As for competing internationally as an American for the first time, Holzer said the competition has been emotional, but overall a very positive experience. Noting that Canada and her memories competing as a Canadian will always be held close to her heart, beginning a new chapter in her competition career is an exciting venture and ultimately the right choice.

“I am thrilled. I feel so embraced by the Americans and this program. I’m cantering around and they’re cheering for me. It’s thrilling for the owners of my horses who now get to see them competing under their own national flag. This country has been amazing to me. I’ve been here for more than 25 years and I feel American,” Holzer said. “Jumping across that threshold was terrifying, but for me personally, I’m thrilled to be competing as an American. It was the right choice that came at the right time.”

Page and Dr. House 2 Victorious in FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* presented by Adequan®

Arlene “Tuny” Page (USA) and Dr. House 2, a 2005 Oldenburg gelding (Don Schufro x Krack C) owned by Page, secured the win in the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* presented by Adequan® with a final score of 68.336%. Ashley Holzer (USA) and Sir Caramello finished in second place on a 66.784%, while Belinda Trussell (CAN) and Tattoo 15 collected third place honors after finishing with a 65.804%.

Arlene “Tuny” Page and Dr. House 2

Dr. House 2 is the newest member of Page’s talented string, accompanying her already confirmed Grand Prix mount, Woodstock. In just their third CDI competition together, Page feels that their relationship and communication skills are vastly improving, making each test more expressive and accurate than the last.

“He was good. He just goes from strength to strength. Every time we bring him out I learn something about him. The most important thing that I’ve learned is that he’s incredibly honest and just wants to please,” commented Page.

Developing strength and stamina is key when perfecting the movements of the Grand Prix test and Page has been committed to helping the flashy gelding find his own confidence in the ring.

“At this stage, you have to have that strength to carry more expression. He’s so honest and does the exercises easily, and now has to develop that power in the ring to really move. Today, I felt many more moments where he took over in a good way. He was telling me where he could give more.”

After a minor mechanical mishap when Page’s helmet chin strap came undone as the pair rode down the centerline, the duo did not let the distraction impact their test and continued on with poise and accuracy.

“I’m sure you saw, as soon as I came up the centerline my chin strap came undone. I was trying to think of where in the test I could manage to secure it back,” she smiled, admitting that while the situation was not ideal, ended up working out with a great result. “I kept reminding myself to keep my head very still. He was a good boy and went along with everything like a veteran.”

Heather Blitz (USA) and Praestemarkens Quatero took their second class of the week in the Small Tour at TIEC, finishing the FEI Intermediaire I presented by Adequan® with a score of 71.211%. Ashley Holzer (USA) guided Radondo to second place after earning a 70.553%, ahead of Christilot Boylen (CAN) and Rockylane, who completed their test with a score of 69.553% for third.

The High Price of Protecting Our Wild Horse Herds

Photo: Divide Basin band.

Dear Friends:

Not everything we do here at the Cloud Foundation is in the limelight, but it is crucial in our fight to keep our wild horse families living in precious freedom on their home ranges.  Our legal efforts to do this are costly. Some go on for years, like our commitment to preventing the cruel sterilization of the entire Saylor Creek Herd in Idaho.

Our fight to prevent the removal of all the wild horses in Utah’s Beaver County continues as does our work to keep wild horses living wild and free on the vast checkerboard lands of southern Wyoming.

Preventing wild horse families from losing their freedom on lands in the checkerboard along the I-80 corridor is a real challenge. The powerful Rock Springs Grazing Association covets all these lands for their cattle and sheep. They want the wild horses gone, removed, and locked up!

Bottom line, we have to keep as many horses out of holding as we possibly can! This is a critical time and legal action is one of the only ways to keep them safe on their homes on the range.

As most of you know, my colleagues on BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board voted to destroy the wild horses in holding. I was the only dissenting voice. The door the Advisory Board cracked open last fall could swing wide if the Secretary of the Interior supports the “humane euthanasia” of thousands of healthy wild horses in holding. This is a very real possibility.

Please consider a special donation to support our legal efforts. We had two precedent-setting wins in Federal District Court last year which will help protect wild horses in the future. To continue our legal battles, your generous support is essential!

Poag Guides Zonnekoning to FEI Grand Prix Win at Tryon FEI CDI 3*

Katie Poag and Zonnekoning. Photos ©SusanJStickle.

Mill Spring, NC – April 21, 2017 – The first international dressage competition of the 2017 season commenced at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), featuring both Small Tour and Large Tour competition in the George H. Morris Arena. The highlight class, the FEI Grand Prix presented by Adequan®, was championed by Katie Poag (USA) aboard Zonnekoning, who earned a 68.840% to take the win. P. J. Rizvi (USA) and Breaking Dawn finished in second place with a score of 68.222%, ahead of Arlene “Tuny” Page (USA) and Dr. House 2, who collected third place on a score of 68.100%.

Poag and Zonnekoning narrowly edged Rizvi and her veteran mount, Breaking Dawn, after performing a consistent and relaxed test in the main arena. After spending their winter season in Wellington, FL, perfecting the movements of the Grand Prix test, the pair displayed a strong connection, ultimately leading to their win and a personal best score.

“I thought it went very well today. It was a fairly consistent test for us. Our trot work, as we’ve moved through the levels, has been our strongest piece and I felt like we were able to really clean up the canter work today,” said Poag. “I was very pleased. I think we can all desire and want more, but it was a great performance today.”

The pair collected several strong finishes during their winter season and has built on their foundation of strength and confidence since the conclusion of the winter circuit. With improvements to several areas of their test, Poag was beaming with their final result.

“Our flying changes went a lot better today than they did during our last outing. The piaffe and passage tour is the strongest it has been too,” she continued. “I thought that it was accurate and where he needed to be today. He was listening to me and I felt like that was shown throughout the test.”

P. J. Rizvi and Breaking Dawn

Poag and Zonnekoning will contest the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan® to conclude Large Tour competition. Poag selected the music herself and has built the choreography around the pair’s strengths.

“I really enjoy our choreography for our freestyle. We get to be creative and really highlight the movements where we excel. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and I really enjoy the music that we have.”

A native of Greensboro, NC, Poag, who now bases her business in South Carolina, commented on the convenience of having an FEI CDI competition in the Carolinas’ region. She commented, “We really enjoy coming here. We were here last year for the first CDI in April and then returned in September for the second CDI just to school around. I’m looking forward to coming here more and it feels like it’s in my backyard. I’m from North Carolina and now we live in South Carolina, so I’m familiar with this area. It feels like we’re home.”

Heather Blitz (USA) and Praestemarkens Quatero, a 2009 Danish Warmblood gelding (Quarterback x Rohdiamant) owned by Blitz, took a commanding win in the FEI Prix St. Georges presented by Adequan® after receiving a score of 72.974%. Jessica Jo Tate (USA) and Montana captured second place with a 69.237%, while Natalie Pai (USA) guided her own Fritz San Tino to third place, receiving a 68.605%.

US Equestrian Eventing Show Jumping Course Advisor Program Revamped for 2017

Lexington, Ky. – After 12 years, the Eventing Sport Committee approved a next phase for the US Equestrian Eventing Show Jumping Course Advisor Program. In 2017, Richard Jeffery will review show jumping courses for all FEI eventing competitions in the U.S. following the event. Course designers will be asked to submit their courses as posted at the competition to Jeffery with all technical details (distance, time allowed, etc.) within five days of the completion of the competition. Each course, along with the technical details provided by the course designer, will be posted on the US Equestrian website with Jeffery’s critique. This will allow course designers to review other courses and consider Jeffery’s input when designing their own courses.

“I am hoping that we can have a more level standard of designs across the country at the FEI level, plus those designing just national divisions can have an idea of the type of courses that are being used at the FEI levels,” Jeffery said. “In addition, with my comments posted on those courses, I hope they can further their education in course design and gain valuable experience from other course designers.”

The US Equestrian Eventing Show Jumping Course Advisor Program was introduced in 2004 to raise the standard of eventing show jumping course design in the United States. Initially, the program focused on show jumping courses for FEI and Advanced level competitions. Since its inception, the program has expanded to include review of courses for Preliminary and Intermediate Horse Trials. The program has been effective in improving the consistency of eventing show jumping courses through the review and critique of courses from a majority of designers at the Preliminary level and above.

The ultimate goal of the new program is to establish and maintain a consistent standard in the show jumping phase for events across the country. In the inaugural year, anyone interested in course design may also utilize this educational resource.

For more information, please contact Shealagh Costello, Director of Eventing National Programs, at scostello@usef.org or (859) 225-6923.
