Stop Permanent Sterilization and Roundup in Nevada’s Blue Wing Complex
The Blue Wing Complex, located south of Winnemucca, Nevada, is home to approximately 1,912 wild horses and 356 wild burros. Each of these magnificent animals understands the meaning of family and the instinct to live free. They roam the land wild and untamed, bonded to their bands and born to be free.
Each horse and burro has a story. We may not know their names or recognize their faces, but we honor their lives and their right to exist.
Each one is precious.
The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) Humboldt River Field Office in Winnemucca, Nevada is proposing to permanently sterilize wild horses on the range in the Blue Wing Complex. We’ve STOPPED these sterilization plans before, and we need to stop them again. The agency also plans to round up and remove more than 80% of the wild horses and burros, disrupting the social fabric of the bands by skewing the sex ratio in favor of males — a practice that increases aggression among stallions as they compete for fewer mares.
Each of these actions would be harmful on its own — but together, they spell disaster for the wild herds. Reducing their numbers to unsustainable levels, sterilizing individuals, and using the fertility control drug GonaCon threatens to destroy the genetic health and long-term viability of these populations.
There is excessive mining and livestock grazing throughout the Complex. The BLM has zeroed out — or eliminated — all wild horses and burros from nearly half of the original Congressionally designated wild horse and burro habitat within the Complex.
We must never become complacent — we must continue the fight, even when the odds seem stacked against us. It’s vital to document every instance of opposition to these ill-conceived management plans to send a clear message: WE HAVE NOT GIVEN UP! We will keep fighting for our beloved wild horses and burros.
Please join us in calling on the Trump Administration and BLM to prioritize the Peoples’ interests over commercial interests!
