Last Chance: Tell BLM to Stop Sacrificing Wild Horses for Livestock
Recently, we alerted you to BLM’s ill-conceived plan for the Eagle Complex, which spans more than 743,000 acres across Nevada and Utah. Despite strong public opposition, BLM has now released its Preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA), proposing to limit this vast landscape to just 145–265 wild horses while continuing to authorize livestock grazing equivalent to more than 2,600 year-round cattle.
To achieve that goal, BLM would remove approximately 1,948 wild horses, leaving just 145–265 animals across the entire 1,161-square-mile Eagle Complex. Before BLM makes its final decision, we have one last opportunity to speak up for these iconic wild horses.
The numbers tell the story. While BLM proposes limiting the Eagle Complex to just 145–265 wild horses, the agency continues to authorize livestock grazing equivalent to more than 2,600 year-round cattle within the HMAs. Even the actual livestock use over the past decade averaged an equivalent of approximately 800 year-round cattle. BLM’s own numbers reveal a striking imbalance in how these public lands are allocated.
BLM is now accepting public comments on the EA — we can’t let them get away with this without hearing our strong opposition. Your voice matters!
