Lexington, Ky. – Sixteen combinations entered the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena Sunday morning with National Championship honors and selection for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games on their minds for the second and final round of the Adequan/USEF Open Reining National Championship and Selection Trial for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Reining Squad. And in a repeat of Friday’s initial round at the Kentucky Reining Cup, Shawn Flarida posted the top score of the day to claim the National Title and punch his ticket to Normandy, France for the World Championship in August. Additionally, five other riders earned their place on the squad with strong performances over the week.

Flarida (Springfield, Ohio) and Michell Kimball’s seven-year-old Quarter Horse stallion Spooks Gotta Whiz posted a score of 225 in Friday’s first round and bested that by 2.5 points scoring 227.5 Sunday morning. They finished on an overall score of 452.5 to top the field by 3.5 points.

The multiple-time National Champion and 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Team Gold medalist was pleased with his horse throughout their time in Lexington and knows that there were some points left on the table.

“Friday night seems like a month ago,” said Flarida. “I had a few bobbles in each pattern but he’s just a nice horse; he’s fun to show and just a great horse.”

Flarida looks forward to getting to Normandy and retaining the title he helped to earn four years ago and believes the U.S. riders are poised for greatness in France.

“They’re all super talented and hardworking,” said Flarida of his squad-mates. “When you get there it’s just time to put your hand down and get to work.”

Earning Reserve Champion honors and her spot on the U.S. squad was Mandy McCutcheon with an overall score of 449. She rode father Tim McQuay’s 10-year-old Quarter Horse stallion Yellow Jersey to scores of 224 and 225 on Friday and Sunday, respectively, to help her become the first women to ever represent the United States at a Reining World Championship.

“The next part is the fun part; this was the nerve-wracking part. I’ll still be nervous but just to get to say you get to go is so fun,” said McCutcheon who will ride alongside her husband, Tom, in Normandy. “For me to be on a team with my husband on a horse my parents own is just so fun.”

Jordan Larson (Whitesboro, Texas) and Heritage Farms’ HF Mobster slid to third place overall by earning 223 and 225 in the two rounds. The six-year-old Quarter Horse stallion finished on an overall score of 448.

Andrea Fappani (Scottsdale, A.Z.) had an extremely successful weekend at the Kentucky Reining Cup qualifying two of Silver Spurs Equine’s horses for the U.S. World Equestrian Games squad. With the seven-year-old Quarter Horse stallion Smoking Whiz he finished in fourth on a total of 446.5 and then piloted the eight-year-old Quarter Horse stallion Custom Cash Advance to a weekend total of 445.

Finishing in sixth place and earning a place on the squad were Troy Heikes (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Denise Bixler’s eight-year-old Quarter Horse gelding Lil Gun Dunit with a score of 442.

Rounding out the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Reining Squad after finishing in seventh place are Tom McCutcheon (Aubrey, Texas) and Jennifer Marley’s six-year-old Quarter Horse stallion Dun Git a Nicadual after finishing the weekend on a total of 440.5.

Lexington, Ky. – The 2014 Adequan/USEF Open Reining National Championship and Selection Trial for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Reining Squad kicked off Friday evening at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena with the first of two rounds of competition. A field of 35 international veterans went to task in the CRI3* competition which is being held in conjunction with the Kentucky Reining Cup.

Leading the way in National Championship and Selection Trial competition is former National Champion and U.S. Team Gold medalist from the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, Shawn Flarida. Riding Michell Kimball’s seven-year-old Quarter Horse stallion Spooks Gotta Whiz, Flarida (Springfield, Ohio) executed a polished performance that was highlighted by solid transitions to score 225.

“He warmed up really well, and showed really sweet,” said Flarida, who looks for another solid round from Spooks Gotta Whiz on Sunday. “I hope he shows as pure again and I’ll let things fall where they do.”

Lying in second place after round one on Friday is Mandy McCutcheon (Aubrey, Texas) and her father Tim McQuay’s Yellow Jersey. Para-Equestrian Dressage Athletes Try Their Hand at the 2nd Para-Reining Demonstration

Lexington, KY – April 26, 2014 – At the 2013 American Quarter Horse (AQHA) World Championship Show November 8-23, the Para-Equestrian discipline Para-Reining was demonstrated at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City for the first time ever. USA Reining and the United States Para-Equestrian Association, in cooperation with the AQHA and National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), made the unprecedented Para-Reining demonstration possible. Those athletes included two-time Paralympian Rebecca Hart, U.S. Air Force veteran Derrick Perkins, and Para-Dressage rider Frederick Win. Alongside these equestrians was experienced AQHA rider Reyna Nicole Taylor. All four riders were judged by FEI 4* Reining judges. For the second time in history, Para-Dressage athletes will once again demonstrate the future Para-Reining discipline at the Cargill’s Nutrena® brand Para-Reining Event April 26, 2014, at 1 p.m. This showcase is part of the Kentucky Reining Cup, held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. on April 25-27, 2014. The Kentucky Reining Cup is held in conjunction with the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. This year’s Kentucky Reining Cup features the Adequan©/USEF Open Reining National Championship as well as the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Selection Trials.

Brad Ettleman, president of HorsePower, Inc. and producer of the Kentucky Reining Cup, has been a driving force behind USA Reining jump starting the international Para-Reining sport. With the help from the United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) and their athletes, the AQHA, NRHA, and USA Reining, these events have been made possible.

USPEA President Hope Hand noted, “Putting on our silver buckles and donning our cowgirl and cowboy hats doesn’t get any better. We are so fortunate to be given this opportunity to showcase another Para Equestrian sport and to demonstrate the versatility of the horse and how in just two days they have adapted to our riders’ physical challenges. We thank our borrowed horses and their generous owners for allowing us to share this experience with everyone. I also want to thank USA Reining’s Brad Ettleman and World Champion Reiner of Canada Lisa Coulter, who are overseeing this entire event and making sure the show runs smoothly.”

Para-Dressage riders participating in the Cargill’s Nutrena® Para-Reining Event include Briana Beckworth, 2012 London Paralympian Dale Dedrick, Holly Jacobson, Lise Yervasi, and Frederick Win. Win also participated in the November 2013 Para-Reining demonstration.

Frederick Win commented, “I am so excited to participate in this event once again. My horse Gracie is a beautiful mare. We bonded right away. She is an approachable horse and enjoys making friends around the ring. She also doesn’t get spooked when I approach hopping with one leg towards her. She is wonderful. During my warm-ups on the first day I worked on my pattern including my circles and spinning. It went well. I could definitely see that Gracie was well trained. I had a bit difficultly with my slide on the first day as my balance is one side and is unusual for most horses. On the second day Gracie took what she learned about my weight, adjusted to it, and she gave me great slide on a very straight line. I want to thank my amazing reining trainer Josh Visser and his wife Carri Visser for reaching out to me in advanced to reserve Gracie for me. I also can’t thank not only Gracie’s owners but all the owners of these horses. Every time I am on Gracie practicing I can tell how much they cherish her. To put me on this advanced level horse is amazing. More importantly their kindness and trust in allowing me as a para-equestrian dressage rider to show this horse is exponential. The whole event has gone so smooth with the help of everyone including Brad (Ettleman) and Lisa (Coulter). I am excited to ride on.”

For the 2014 competition year, USA Reining will use the newly adapted Para-Reining rules. The new rules are a collaboration of AQHA Equestrians with Disabilities, NRHA and USA Reining. The adapted rules will be specialized, revised, and collated with the FEI Para-Equestrian rules for the following 2015 competition year. Members are encouraged to provide feedback for integration of the 2015 rules. USA Reining hopes to make Para-Reining a nationally recognized sport by the beginning of 2015.

For more information about USA Reining, please visit www.USA-Reining.com. If you are interested in the Para-Reining program or would like to provide member feedback, please contact Brad Ettleman at Brad@HPowerInc.com.

Top Reiners Line Up for Competition at 2013 Kentucky Reining Cup

Tim McQuay and Mega Watt Shine (Shannon Brinkman)

Lexington, KY – The reining world descends on the Kentucky Horse Park this weekend as many of the best in the sport have come to Lexington to compete in the 2013 Kentucky Reining Cup. Held in conjunction with the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by Land Rover, competition will be held April 26-27 in the Alltech Arena. On Friday, CRI3* Open FEI Reining competition will begin at 6:00 pm ET, while Saturday’s Reining World Freestyle Championship is always one of the most celebrated features of the weekend.

CRI3* Open FEI Reining

At Thursday’s Horse Inspection, 25 CRI3* horses were presented to the Ground Jury. Only Sam Schaffhauser’s Magnums Pretty Patti was not accepted.

In the CRI3* Shawn Flarida (Springfield, OH) looks to secure his third consecutive victory in the Kentucky Reining Cup. Since the competition’s inception in 2011, the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Team Gold medalist has proven unbeatable.

However, Flarida will face stiff competition in 2013. He will go head-to-head with his U.S. teammates from the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games: Tom McCutcheon (Aubrey, TX) and Tim McQuay. At those Games, McCutcheon became a double Gold medalist after also securing top Individual honors. In addition to his 2010 Gold medal, McQuay (Tioga, TX) also won Team Gold and Individual Silver medals at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany.

U.S. team veteran and 2008 FEI World Reining Championships Team Silver medalist Pete Kyle (Whitesboro, TX) has entries in both the CRI and Freestyle divisions. Kyle is competing for the third year at the Kentucky Reining Cup.

“I really look forward to coming to this event in Lexington every year,” said Pete Kyle.  “It’s a great atmosphere and beautiful facility. It’s great to be able to mingle with the best Reiners and Eventers from around the world. I look forward to coming more and more each year.”

Also competing in the CRI3* Open FEI Reining division is four-time Grammy award winner Lyle Lovett (Spring, TX).

Reining World Freestyle Championship

The champions from the 2011 and 2012 vie for top honors among a field of 22 that line up in the Reining World Freestyle Championship. Shane Brown (Elbert, CO) claimed the title in the competition’s inaugural year but was relegated to runner-up in 2012 by Kyle. Brown and Kyle will be must-sees on a night of lively performances.

In 2013, eventers will once again take part in the Reining World Freestyle Championship. They include the 2011 and 2012 Rolex/USEF National CCI4* Eventing Champions, Sinead Halpin (Oldwick, NJ) and Allison Springer (Upperville, VA). Additionally, 2000 Olympic Gold medalist and USEF Eventing Team Coach David O’Connor (The Plains, VA) and 2003 Pan American Games Gold medalist Bobby Costello (Southern Pines, NC) will compete.

Both the CRI3* Open FEI Reining and Reining World Freestyle Championship will be live streamed free of charge on USEFNetwork.com presented by Smartpak. Coverage of the CRI3* Open FEI Reining will begin at 6 pm ET on Friday, April 26, with the Reining World Freestyle Championship beginning at 5:30 pm ET on Saturday, April 27.
