Opportunity to Take a Stand for Wild Horses in Central Nevada
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is creating long-term management plans called Herd Management Area Plans (HMAPs) for many herds across the West. Currently, BLM Battle Mountain District (Tonopah Field Office) is asking for public comments on its Management Evaluation for the HMAP for the Stone Cabin Complex, which includes the Stone Cabin, Little Fish Lake, and Saulsbury HMAs located in central Nevada.
If the plans outlined in the Management Evaluation document are implemented, wild horses as we know them today will disappear forever. The BLM proposes:
- using GonaCon, a sterilant that can render mares infertile with as few as two applications.
- introducing a one-dose sterilant currently in development, which may be unveiled within the year.
- castrating stallions and implanting experimental IUDs in mares — without any follow-up medical care or monitoring.
These drastic sterilization measures will forever destroy natural behaviors along with the ability for herds to recover from genetic deterioration and other issues caused by BLM’s mismanagement.
BLM claims the range is too damaged for wild horses, yet over the past decade, they’ve added the equivalent of 866 year-round cows. As usual, this current plan slashes the wild horse population from 1,500 to the BLM’s arbitrary AML of just 281 on 883 square miles of public land — while allowing 3 to 5 times that number of commercial livestock.
- We oppose BLM’s plan to remove 80% of the horses, blaming them for poor range health, water shortages, and riparian damage — while continuing to prioritize livestock. Remove livestock grazing, and every wild horse in this complex could remain free — for life.
- We oppose the BLM’s outdated, biased management, which endangers wild horse bands through reliance on sterilization, IUDs, and sex-ratio manipulationM while ignoring/excusing the true impacts of livestock grazing.
SPEAKING UP to get public comments on the record is ESSENTIAL — WITHOUT YOU, WILD HORSES ARE DOOMED.
