Help Save Wild Burros from Massive Roundup in Nevada
Wild burros near Beatty, Nevada are cherished by visitors from around the world traveling through the area en route to Las Vegas. However, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has failed to uphold its mandate to humanely manage the Bullfrog wild burro herd. The agency has neglected to protect and maintain adequate water sources within the Herd Management Area (HMA), implement humane PZP fertility control to manage population growth, and engage with local residents and visitors on best practices for coexisting with wildlife — while keeping them wild.
Due to the BLM’s failures, the agency now proposes to remove 95% of the estimated 1,200 burros living in and around the Bullfrog HMA, leaving just 58-91 burros on 157,000 acres. As we’ve said before, America’s wild burros face a genetic crisis because of BLM’s mismanagement of these hardy little animals and the lands they call home. The agency keeps most burro populations so small that inbreeding is inevitable. That will be the fate of the Bullfrog burro herd if we can’t stop this ill-conceived mass removal.
Take action now! Urge the BLM to (1) abandon its massive roundup plan and (2) collaborate with The Cloud Foundation to develop a humane management strategy that keeps the majority of the Bullfrog herd on our public lands. This plan should include ensuring sufficient year-round water availability within the HMA and conducting a robust study to identify the most humane and effective fertility control for wild burros.
