Outspoken and Emily Hertz Win the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby at Gulf Coast Winter Classic

Emily Hertz and Outspoken.

Although the weather turned chilly yesterday, the competition heated up when twenty-nine horse and rider teams tackled the course in the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby, presented by Tucci, at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic Circuit in Gulfport, Mississippi.

The course was designed by Glenn Moody, renowned hunter course designer. Moody has designed and built the courses for Upperville, the Middleburg Classic, the Washington International Horse Show, the Legacy Cup and other top competitions throughout the United States. In addition to his work as a course designer, Moody also is known as an outstanding trainer of hunter and hunter seat equitation riders, having trained for The Barracks in Charlottesville, Virginia for more than two decades.

Outspoken, owned by David Pellegrini and ridden by Emily Hertz of Eads, Tennessee, won the class with an overall score of 175. “I thought the course rode really well,” commented Hertz. “I especially liked that in the Handy round we were able to show off the inside turns and really be handy and then he [Moody] gave us the opportunity to gallop as well,” she said.

“I love the new Kruse Cushion Ride footing. I feel the horses really travel across it well and don’t get bogged down,” commented Hertz, “and they all seem to perform well in it,” she added.

Conner Hinckley of Argyle, Texas and his own Seamless received an overall score of 172 and a second place. Tim Maddrix of Birmingham, Alabama and Missy Nolen’s Life Is Good finished in third place after earning an overall score of 168.

Michael Kocher of Tryon, North Carolina and Abigail Beaty’s Third Day earned an overall score of 167.5 and a fourth place ribbon. Kocher returned for the fifth place ribbon with Cynthia Hallman’s Fig Street’s Duchess after earning a combined score of 167. Heather Geller of Akron, Ohio and her own Pommegranate earned an overall score of 166 and a sixth place finish.

Maddrix returned for the seventh place ribbon this time in the irons of Cheryl Rubenstein, LLC’s Capisce; the pair earned a combined score of 165. Durgin Park, owned by Henrietta Hall and ridden by Sarah Invicta Williams of Santa Fe, New Mexico, finished in eighth place with an overall score of 158. Maddrix and Andrew Kocher’s Cabriole earned ninth place honors with their overall score of 157, and Unikat, owned by Amy Yoder and ridden by Carlos Aramburo of Red Bank, Mississippi, finished in tenth with an overall score of 156. Eleventh and twelfth places were awarded to Indy, owned and ridden by Sarah Doster of Lantana, Texas, and Can’t Buy Me Love, owned by Beluga, LLC and ridden by Mathieu Rein of Milton, Georgia. For more information on the event, click here.

Hertz showed at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic Pensacola Circuit before heading to the second leg of the shows at the Gulfport grounds. According to Hertz, Outspoken, also known affectionately as ‘Lana Lou’, has not done much this year but has had top ribbons in the National Derbies over the past couple of years. “She’s been champion numerous times in the pre-greens 3′ and 3’3″and went to the USHJA Pre-Green National Championship and earned some very good scores in 2013,” she said.

Lana Lou is eight this year and Dave Pellegrini has owned her since she was a 2-year-old. “Lana Lou is a part of the family,” commented Hertz. “Dee Pellegrini was champion with her in the older adults last week and we’re hoping to move her up into the First year division over the next couple of weeks here,” she added.

Lexington, KY – October 13, 2014 – After winning this year’s first Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show, Christopher Payne took over the top of the Leading Rider standings and never relinquished it. The talented professional of New Hope LLC went on to capture multiple top placings throughout the spring and summer. At the end of the Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series, Payne accumulated 1375 points to take home the coveted $10,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Professional Rider Award.

The Hallway Feeds Series consists of seven national hunter derby events held throughout the 2014 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. During the final event at the Kentucky National Horse Show, Payne’s achievements throughout the year were recognized with the $10,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Professional Rider Award, which went to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the seven classes that make up the series. Payne also received a free flight for a horse, in the continental US, provided by Tex Sutton.

“It’s my first year participating in this Derby series and it’s absolutely amazing,” expressed Payne. “I can’t thank Hallway Feeds enough for sponsoring this opportunity for hunter riders. For junior, amateurs and professionals to be able to compete and get something out of it is very special. Nobody else in the country does anything like that for the hunter riders and I can’t thank them enough. It’s an honor to be a part of it, and I really enjoyed it.”

“Hallway Feeds would like to congratulate Chris and all of the other competitors, as well as their equine partners, for a successful series,” said Morgan Akers-McQuerry of Hallway Feeds. “We look forward to seeing everyone back next year.”

Christopher Payne and Harlan’s Parade Win Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby

Christopher Payne and Harlan claim victory in the National Hunter Derby.

Lexington, KY – August 17, 2014 – Despite a consistent drizzle for most of Sunday afternoon, the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby displayed 46 horse and rider pairs, with Christopher Payne and Harlan claiming the blue ribbon. Molly Sewell aboard El Raymond took second place.

While observers and waiting mounts stood under trees and other cover, rider and horses tried to navigate the course with ease and fluidity. Payne said he liked today’s course, which featured an interesting set-up and a Hallway Feed jump as the Derby’s sponsor.

“It was an interesting course because all the jumps were kind of in the middle of the ring; there weren’t any outside lines so it was a lot of curves and turns, which seemed to work well for me,” said Payne.

Even with the constant pattering of rain, Payne said the footing held up incredibly well. “It can pour down rain in here and everyone can still get out there and do it,” he said.

Payne certainly did it today, putting in solid rounds on both Harlan, the 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Susan Moriconi, and Holden, a 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding also owned by Moriconi. Both mounts qualified for the handy round and showed off their soft turns and maneuvered a trot fence. Harlan came out on top and Holden gained a respectable 6th.

Payne said Harlan, who is also shown by his owner in the Over 50 Adult classes, is a very fun horse to ride.

“You put your leg on and he’s game to canter up to anything,” said Payne. “You can bring him up to a big, spooky jump and you leg him and he tries harder. He’s always in it to win it.”

Harlan was definitely on his game today garnering the lead in the classic round and an impressively high score of 94 in the handy round, making Payne and Harlan the clear winners.

Payne was excited about the victory and is looking forward to getting on the road for his next competition, the Hampton Classic Horse Show. Before the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show, Payne was ranked fourth in the rider standings for the National Hunter Derby. With today’s resounding victory his star is sure to rise.

Payne was also very grateful to Hallway Feeds for sponsoring the event. “It’s a really great thing that they sponsor a hunter derby like this. It really means a lot because we need that support in the hunters. I really appreciate it,” said Payne.

El Raymond and Molly Sewell came in second place
El Raymond and Molly Sewell came in second place

Coming in second was Molly Sewell aboard El Raymond, a 16-year-old Warmblood gelding owned by Leslie and Stuart Campbell. Sewell’s solid handy round received a score of 90 and placed them right behind Payne and Harlan. Coming in third was Brianna Davis on Hip Hop, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Erik Johnson.

Hallway Feeds’ close proximity to the Kentucky Horse Park provides the opportunity to utilize the freshest feed, manufactured with time-honored commitments to high standards of quality and the latest scientific advances. Lexington, KY – August 18, 2013 – A week of the nation’s best hunter derby competition came to a close today at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show with the final hunter highlight event, the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby.

Today’s USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Kentucky Horse Park marked the fifth event in the seven-part Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series, throughout which Meredith Darst has been extremely successful. She currently stands as the leading junior in the series, and she widened that lead today. Darst finished first in the 42-horse class aboard Lightning Z and second in the class aboard last week’s second place finisher, Capstone. Finishing in third place were Kelli Cruciotti and Premonition, owned by Serenity Farm of Elizabeth, CO.

Following the completion of the first hunter round, Darst sat in the fourth place position aboard Capstone, owned by Norgan, Inc. of Wellington, FL, and in first place aboard Lightning Z, owned by her family’s Lochmoor Stables of Lebanon, OH.

She and Capstone came into the second round with a score of 86 prepared to demonstrate their abilities over the handy course. The course utilized a trot jump, provided a number of opportunities for tight inside turns and set the high option fences in such a way that they were separate from the low options, requiring different tracks.

Again electing to take all four of the high options, Darst and Capstone moved into the lead with a handy round score of 89, for a 175 overall.

Kelli Cruciotti returned for the handy round in third place aboard rookie derby mount Premonition.

“This was his first time ever doing a hunter derby,” Cruciotti said of the 8-year-old gelding. “He’s rather green so I was very, very thrilled with how he jumped and handled all of the brush and the jumps.”

Cruciotti continued: “For the handy I obviously wanted to try to win and step up, but at the same time, I wanted to give my horse a positive ride that will teach him how to do it right. It was more about giving him a positive experience so that I can build a great derby horse.”

Cruciotti proved was able to give Premonition a confidence-building ride while also impressing the judges. The pair earned a score of 86.5, including the four high option points, to put them into position just behind Darst and Capstone in the rankings with an overall score of 174.5.

As the first round winners, Darst and Lightning Z were the last to return, and they pulled out all of the stops.

“Lightning lives with us so I know him really well,” Darst said. “I know I can do all of the turns with him. I was pretty tight to the first jump of the handy, and everywhere else that I could I took the inside turn options.”

Their expert handiness and high fence options resulted in a second round score of 91 and an overall total of 182, earning them the final victory gallop of the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show.

Following the completion of the Hallway Feeds Series, the $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Awards will present a $10,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the seven classes that make up the Series. Back-to-Back $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Wins for Colin Syquia at Kentucky Summer Series

Lexington, KY – August 3, 2013 – The first and second place line-up of this week’s $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Kentucky Summer Classic bore a striking resemblance to that of last week’s class. Colin Syquia and Apropos took the first place position in the derby just six days ago, and they returned to do so again today. Last week’s second place finisher, Meredith Darst, was once again number two, this time aboard Capstone.

Today’s hunter derby was the fourth event in the seven-part Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series, which features the $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Awards. This week’s class saw 52 entries competing over the first round course designed by Bobby Murphy. Following the completion of the first course, the top 12 riders returned for the handy round. Both courses presented riders with options to take four higher fences, and riders added one point to their score for each successfully cleared high option. For the handy round, Murphy also presented riders with a trot jump and tested them with a hand gallop to the opening oxer.

Molly Sewell and Zin Zin, owned by Travis Lingenfelter of Saginaw, MI, were early to go in the opening order, and they maneuvered the course beautifully, electing to take all four high options for a total first round score of 91. Sewell’s score would remain well out of reach for much of the class, until finally being bested by Shawn Casady and Sedona, owned by Susan Stanley of Delray Beach, FL. Casady and Sedona also opted to take each of the higher options, earning a score of 92.

Following the completion of the first round, Casady and Sewell were the clear front runners, while Bruce Christison and Apalachicola, owned by Heather Conder of Lugoff, SC, sat in third with a total score of 87. Syquia and Apropos, owned by Chiddingstone Farms LCC of New York, NY, were close behind in fourth place with a score of 86.5, and Darst and Capstone, owned by Norgan, Inc. of Wellington, FL, went into the second round in fifth place with a score of 86.25.

Unfortunately for all three of the first round leading riders, their handy rounds would go as smoothly. Riders returned in reverse order of their first round standings, working backward from the twelfth place rider until finishing with Casady and Sedona in the first place position. Christison and Apalachicola therefore were the first of the top three to return, but a disappointing handy round saw him drop quickly down the leader board to the eventual eleventh place position.

To the disappointment of Sewell, that trend continued as she returned with Zin Zin. Sewell and Zin Zin’s second round total score of 64 moved them down the list from second to tenth with a grand total score of 155. The current Hallway Feed Series Leading Rider, Casady, was the last to return on Sedona, and as they seamlessly made tight turns and maneuvered the handy round it appeared as though they had the win all sewn up. The crowd gathered at the Stonelea Ring had already begun to applaud his gorgeous course and almost surefire win, but a devastating light bump over the final fence knocked the rail out of the cup and moved Casady and Sedona to the twelfth place spot.

The disappointing handy rounds for Christison, Sewell and Casady, combined with beautiful second rounds for Syquia and Darst shot them to the top. Syquia and Apropos handled the hand gallop, tight turns and trot fence of the handy round flawlessly, and with four points added for the high options, they earned a second round score of 92 and a winning grand total of 178.50.

“He went really nicely in the first round, but he just wasn’t as inspired as he was last week,” Syquia explained. “He hasn’t shown as much recently, so he wasn’t quite as fit, and it was hard going back-to-back weeks. So when it came down to the handy, I figured I’d just turn tighter and steer him a little bit more, and he really responded. He jumped beautifully in the second round.”

Syquia continued: “It’s amazing. You don’t want to think that you could possibly win it two weeks in a row, but I was hoping to. He’s such a good boy; I thought I’d have a chance. Hopefully we’ll be back in September to try it again.”

Darst and Capstone earned a second round score of 90 after jumping each fence brilliantly and flowing through the handy course. With a grand total of 176.25 they captured the second place honors.

While Casady did not see a top finish with Sedona, the talented young rider did nab both the third and fourth place positions aboard Stars Go Blue, owned by Marigot Bay Farm LLC of Dover, MA, and Vogue, owned by Georgia Saad of Lexington, KY, respectively. Casady has been extremely successful throughout the series, winning the first event aboard Stars Go Blue and placing third and fourth during each of the following events, securing his position as the current Hallway Feeds Leading Rider.

The $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Awards will present a $10,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the seven classes that make up the Series. The amateur rider and junior rider accumulating the most points will each receive a $2,500 cash prize. Riders will receive points only on their highest placed horse in each of the classes. The awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Hallway Feeds class at the Kentucky National Horse Show on September 21, 2013.

Lexington, KY – May 11, 2013 – Saturday evening at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show kicked off with the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Rolex Stadium. It marked the first event in the seven-part series presented by Hallway Feeds during the spring and summer, and at the conclusion of the series the Leading Rider Awards for the Series will be presented. Last year’s winner of the Junior Rider Award Shawn Casady has taken the early lead in the series after winning this evening’s class aboard Stars Go Blue, owned by Marigot Bay Farm of Dover, MA. The duo earned scores of 87 and 90 during the two round class to lead the victory gallop.

Bobby Murphy built an 11 obstacle course for the first round of tonight’s event set at 3′ with four 3’6″ option fences. There was a two stride line as well as a bending line and multiple rollbacks. One of the options included a large brush and many of the fences were decorated to imitate natural obstacles a rider would experience when hunting. The top 12 scoring horse and rider combinations were invited to return for the handy round, which also had four options as well as a trot fence and multiple inside turns to showcase handiness.

Kelley Farmer claimed an early lead with Grayon, owned by Jay Golding of Gordonsville, VA, after scoring an 89 during the first round. They were the last to return in the handy round, delivering a flawless trip until the very last fence which they met a bit deep, resulting in a score of 78. Their total was good enough for the fourth place award.

Havens Schatt jumped up in the standings aboard Kindle, owned by R. Bruce Duchossois of Aiken, SC. The duo had a smooth first round that received an 80 and was ranked 11th. They really showcased their brilliance during the handy round, taking all the inside options for a score of 88 that eventually picked up the third place award.

Jennifer Hannan and veteran mount As Always, owned by Jennifer Smith of Wellington, FL, were in top form for tonight’s event. They also had a solid first round effort, receiving a score of 83 from the judges that had them ranked eighth. With smooth inside turns and very nice trot jump the duo’s efforts was honored with a score of 86 to capture the second place prize.

The best of the best proved to be young rider Shawn Casady with Stars Go Blue. During the first round, Casady piloted the talented gelding to a score of 87 that was ranked third. They returned for the handy round ready to perform and were smooth through all of the turns and jumped crisply over each fence. The judges announced a score of 90 for the excellent performance, vaulting them to the top of the leader board to claim the winning honors.

“I’ve been riding Stars Go Blue for almost two years,” noted Casady. “He’s always been a trusty mount and I’ve always been able to rely on him during these kinds of events. He’s very straight forward and he’s very experienced so he just wants you to trust him and let him do his job.”

Casady continued, “During the handy I just wanted to make sure to find all of the jumps and make sure he had his eye on the tall brush, that was really the only big question, everything else was pretty straight forward. The course was really nice, and I think everyone had a good time.”

Last year, Casady was the recipient of the Junior Rider Award for his excellent results throughout the series. “I really like the series,” he expressed. “Hopefully things will keep going well, because that’s a great way to end the summer.”

Parker, CO — Because the popularity of the hunter derby continues to grow, an entire day was devoted to this event during the final week of the Colorado Summer Circuit. From the ponies to the high performance horses, there was a big money derby in each division. The day was punctuated with the popular Pink Coat Luncheon sponsored by Littleton Equine Medical Center and produced by Foxfire Farm, as well as an end of day exhibitor’s party.

Thirty-three horses competed in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby sponsored by Nutrena during The Colorado Horse Park’s Derby Day. Riders found a flowing course that utilized the hilly terrain of the large derby field at the park.

Emily Hertz rode Page Tredennick’s Splash to the win in the two-round class. The nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood/Thoroughbred gelding had only competed in one non-rated Derby prior to today’s class. “He really rose to the occasion,” Tredennick said. “He’s a ham — a sweet, sweet horse.”

While Splash may have wondered what he was doing in the large arena with long, flowing distances to the heavily decorated fences, he quickly got down to the business of showcasing his quality jump and beautiful canter. Hertz explained, “I thought he was perfect in the handy round; I couldn’t have asked him to be any better.”
