Tryon Summer Classic Wrap Up

June 4th, 2012 – Tryon, NC ~ The 2013 Tryon Summer Classic came to a close on Sunday wrapping up a busy week of exciting hunter and jumper action.  The event, held at FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center) in beautiful Tryon, NC, took place May 30 – June 2 and is managed by Aiken, SC based J. P. Godard and Equus Events.  The event benefitted the Tryon Hounds www.tryonhounds.com and featured a $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Friday evening and a $10,000 Jumper Classic sponsored by The EMO Insurance Agency and Martha Hall on Saturday evening.

Daniel Geitner of Aiken, SC went two for two this weekend capturing wins in both the USHJA National Hunter Derby on Friday evening and the $10,000 EMO Jumper Classic on Saturday.  Friday night’s impressive win came on the Liz Tarumianz owned entry of Contemporary.  The pair topped a challenging field of 31 competitors, bringing home scores of an 89 in round 1 and a 95 in round two, finishing up with a two round total of 184 to take home the blue.  Geitner also took home second place honors on Lindsey Rigney’s Calypso.  Contemporary is a 10 year old Holsteiner gelding that Tarumianz of Charlotte, NC has owned just under a year.  Not to be outdone, she also had her share of the blue ribbons on her partner earning the amateur owner hunter championship and the Frederick B. Farwell Grand Amateur Owner Hunter Perpetual Trophy over the weekend.  Tarumianz enjoys coming to the Tryon Summer Classic each year.  She went on to say, “It is one of my favorite shows and is always on my schedule because of the hospitality, courses, footing, and management are always top notch.  The hunter derby under the lights made the class feel extra special; can’t wait to be back next year.”

Daniel Geitner went on to finish off a stellar weekend by taking home the blue in the $10,000 EMO Insurance Agency Jumper Classic on Ann Ritter’s Jumbo Jet on Saturday evening.  The pair was one of five to tackle the jump off course galloping to a fast and clean finish in a time of 32.459 over second place finisher David O’Brien and Hollow Creek Farm’s Various who also finished clean in a time of 34.219.  Sydney Swarr and her Kirin took home third place honors, J. F. Gagne and GIS Inc.’s Runaround Sue were fourth and hometown favorite Lincoln Russell and Richard Kosa’s Winona O M2RS rounded out the top five spots.

The Tryon Summer Classic has always been known for its hospitality and this year was no exception.  The Tryon Hounds treated exhibitors to a derby barbeque on Friday evening during the USHJA National Hunter Derby and on Saturday evening held their annual fundraising benefit dinner under the VIP tent.  Hot To Trot Boutique hosted a wine and cheese reception Saturday afternoon and Martin Klein and Benchmark Farm hosted riders and trainers hospitality by the ring during the Jumper Classic Saturday night.

Sunday, the final day of the show, capped off a beautiful week of horse showing as many of the Tryon Hounds’ perpetual trophies were awarded to some of the show’s Grand Champion and High Point riders.  Some of the winners included:

  • Hoffman Van Wieren Trophy for Grand Champion Hunter – Bethel’s Peri and Bruce Christison
  • Frederick B Farwell Grand Champion Amateur Owner – Contemporary and Liz Tarumianz
  • The Fox Creek Farm Challenge Trophy Grand Junior Hunter – Bethel’s Peri and Grace Howard
  • The Red Frazier Memorial Grand Pony Hunter – Pussycat Doll and Isabella Di Benedetto
  • Grand Adult Hunter – Morris and Tori Bilas
  • Grand Children’s Hunter – Louis Vuitton and Maddy Parker

June 4th, 2012 – Tryon, NC ~ Blue skies shone brightly on Sunday as a week filled with exciting competition, fabulous parties and perfect weather culminated at the 2012 Tryon Summer Classic Horse Show.  The event, held at FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center) in beautiful Tryon, NC, took place May 31 – June 3 and is managed by Aiken, SC based Equus Events.  The show again benefitted the Tryon Hounds www.tryonhounds.com and featured a $2,500 USHJA National Derby sponsored by Reflections Farm and Brick Church Farm on Friday evening and a $10,000 Jumper Classic sponsored by The EMO Insurance Agency and Martha Hall on Saturday evening.

Friday night belonged to Karen Kelley of Charleston, SC and Laura and Meredith Mateo’s Uncle Luc as they strode to an impressive win in the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby sponsored by Reflections Farm and Brick Church Farm.  Kelley said of her win, “I loved the course, all unrelated and off your eye. It felt as if we were on an outside course and that ring is so fun as all the spectators really make it feel exciting and special… Luc and I had a grand time! Another A++ job by Equus Events!”  The pair brought in an 84 from round 1 as they came into the second handy hunter round in second place behind Don Sheehan and the Margaret Edge entry of chosen who scored an 87.  In the handy round Kelley’s bold ride and Luc’s handiness earned them the top score of 85 giving them the win with a two round total of 169.  Sheehan and Chosen were second with a 164 followed by Mador Du Chaufour and Glen Hartigan with a two round total of 158.

Tryon Summer Classic Just Under a Week Away

May 25th, 2012 – Aiken, SC – After a full week of competition and record attendance at the Atlanta Spring Challenge Horse Show there is no down time for the staff at Aiken, SC based Equus Events. The 2012 Tryon Summer Classic to benefit the Tryon Hounds is just under a week away and preparations are already underway for the event which takes place May 31 – June 3 at beautiful FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center). FENCE is an over 380 acre nature, education, and recreation facility nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are many activities in the area including numerous shops and antique stores as well as adventures whitewater rafting on the Green River. This year’s show will again benefit the Tryon Hounds. This event encompasses the days of old with a rich tradition but also attracts some of the top riders and trainers in the southeast. Many will be competing for some of the numerous Grand Champion and perpetual trophies.

June 6th, 2011~ Tryon, NC – The 2011 Tryon Summer Classic came to a close yesterday.  The show took place at FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center) in beautiful Tryon, NC June 2-5.  FENCE is an over 380 acre nature, education, and recreation facility nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.   Equus Events, Inc. handled the managing duties this week.

The Tryon Hounds were once again the show’s beneficiary and put on two fabulous parties during the event.  On Friday evening the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby was held under the lights along with an Exhibitors’ Party in the VIP Tent sponsored by the Tryon Hounds.  While exhibitors and spectators enjoyed cocktails and dinner, 16 horses and riders were prepping to compete in the National Hunter Derby.  Joseph Carnicom of Toledo, OH designed the course which featured 4 height options and natural obstacles such as coups, brush boxes, split rail fencing and rustic logs.  Christina Jason and Allison Mills Renoir Z came home victorious in the class with a first round score of 87 and a second round score of 85 which gave them a 189 two round total to take the win over Lisa Otto’s Duke Principe MF and rider Holli Adams.  Christina rides for DFG Stables and Daniel and Cathy Geitner out of Aiken, SC.  She handled most of the riding duties this week at the Tryon Summer Classic along with Cathy Geitner while Daniel was with clients at the Devon Horse Show.  “The hospitality at this show is fantastic, the courses were great and Renoir Z really rose to the occasion!”  Originally from Rochester, MI, the young professional now lives in Aiken, SC.  “I already owe a lot of my accomplishments to Cathy and Daniel.  They are both great horseman and I am privileged to learn from the best”.

Atlanta Spring and Tryon Summer Classic Horse Shows Right around the Corner

Beautiful spring weather has arrived here in the south and Equus Events spring and summer schedule is beginning to heat up.  The Atlanta Spring Premiere May 11-15 and the Atlanta Spring Challenge May 18-22 are just around the corner and will include two fabulous weeks of AA competition at the Georgia International Horse Park.  This show series takes place in one of the countries premiere equestrian facilities and will offer over $180,000 in prize money through out the two weeks.  Features include a $25,000 Grand Prix each week, two $5,000 Open Welcome Stakes each week, a $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, a USHJA National Hunter Classic, a $7,500 JR/AO Jumper Classic each week and in addition the Atlanta Spring Premiere has been selected as a World Champion Hunter Rider Event.  These shows will offer something for everyone as nearly every hunter and jumper division will be offered a classic.  Equus Events will also offer daily hospitality for exhibitors, trainers, and riders and weekly parties.  The annual Preakness Party will take place May 21st to celebrate the 136th running of the Preakness Stake.  DFG Stables and Daniel and Cathy Geitner of Aiken, SC are graciously sponsoring this event.
