A Royal Victory at Royal Windsor Horse Show

Katie Jerram and Her Majesty The Queen’s Barber’s Shop.

Despite Wednesday’s cancellation, Royal Windsor Horse Show set off in style with packed crowds enjoying the sunshine, the top equestrian sport and the displays. Her Majesty The Queen was delighted to win first place in the RoR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse Championship, with her prized homebred Barber’s Shop.

The main national show jumping class of the day was the 1.40m Grade A & B two phase competition, which proved to be a challenging course, with only four of the 30 starters jumping a double clear round. Fourth to go, Tim Stockdale, set the early pace, jumping a double clear in a time of 29.85 seconds to finish eventual third; however, it was Philip Miller aboard Unbelievable Lady who claimed the £1,200 winner’s prize. The chestnut mare, by Unbelievable Darco, jumped an immaculate round to secure victory, knocking 1.78 seconds off runner-up Trevor Breen’s time.

Further winners on the day were Katie Meredith and Zoralyn, who took the Land Rover Grades B & C Handicap from Nicola Wilson and Maja Burnell who galloped to victory in the opening International CSI-Am competition of the show riding the nine-year-old Crona Cr. The other jumping class of the day was the Olympic Star Spotters for six-year-olds, which saw 12 riders jump double clear to share equal first place.

28 horse four-in-hands from eight nations competed in the first leg of the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix – the dressage. First place after this phase, and by a significant margin, is the current World Champion, Boyd Exell from Australia. His closest challengers are the three members of the gold medal winning Netherlands team at WEG two years ago – Ijsbrand Chardon, Theo Timmerman and Koos de Ronde. The winner of the last two years, Chester Weber from the USA, had to be content with fifth position as he prepares for the second phase, the cross-country marathon.

Exell, who is driving a team of mixed KWPN horses of varying experience, has a lead of some 7-penalties over the rest of the field; the next four contenders are bunched close together, separated by just two penalties. With Exell and Chardon, both multiple winners here over the years, keen to reclaim the title, Weber on his mettle to retain it and Timmerman and de Ronde looking to take it for the first time, Saturday’s marathon promises outstanding sport and great excitement.

For the second year running, Her Majesty The Queen’s Barber’s Shop, ridden by Katie Jerram, landed the RoR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse Championship. The fourteen-year-old gelding will reappear to contest the Ladies Show Horse Friday.

The Leeman Family was compensated for their aborted journey Wednesday, when their homebred two-year-old filly, Kellythorpes Spot The Difference, made her show ring debut to take the In Hand Coloured Championship. It was also co-producer Janay Leeman’s birthday and rider Frazer Atherden’s parents’ wedding anniversary.

Tickets are still available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and can be purchased on www.rwhs.co.uk, via the box office on 0844 581 4960 from the UK and +44 (0) 121 796 6290 internationally. Olympic Stars Heading to Royal Windsor Horse Show

No fewer than five Olympic gold medallists will be competing in the international show jumping classes at Royal Windsor Horse Show (11-15 May) to kick start a summer where all eyes look ahead to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Jeroen Dubbeldam (NED), reigning World and European Champion, heads a stellar line up, which also sees fellow Olympic individual gold medallist Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) go head-to-head with the likes of Peter Charles (GBR), Beezie Madden (USA) and Laura Kraut (USA) all of whom have been part of victorious Olympic teams. Kent Farrington (USA), currently ranked number six in the world, will also be representing a strong USA contingent, which includes three of the top 30 riders in the world.

The competition is set to be fierce as over 37 world class riders look to impress the Olympic selectors on the final stretch of the road to Rio. Home favourites, including John and Robert Whitaker, William Funnel and Laura Renwick are sure to set the crowd alight as they compete in six international 4* classes over three days of competition, which starts on Friday 13th May and culminates with the Grand Prix for the Kingdom of Bahrain Trophy on Sunday 15th May.

The calibre of entries reflects the new augmented status of the show jumping at Royal Windsor Horse Show, as for the first time, the jumping in the private grounds of Windsor Castle will be of CSI 4* quality. Competitors are travelling in from far and wide, with representatives from 13 countries competing for over £220,000 total prize money during the three days.

Similarly, the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix has also been upgraded to a CAIO4* World Cup Qualifier meaning that drivers who gain World Cup points, can earn five bonus points towards the hotly contested FEI World Cup™ Driving Qualification for the 2016-2017 indoor World Cup season.

This added incentive has lured the world’s top four-in-hand drivers from eight nations, who will each showcase their skills in the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix. A CAIO4* and World Cup Qualifier, it is one of the year’s earliest, but undoubtedly the most prestigious, of the international competitions. Among the 29 competitors from eight nations are the reigning world outdoor gold, silver and bronze medallists – Boyd Exell (AUS), Chester Weber (USA) and Theo Timmerman (NED). All return to Royal Windsor in a bid to claim or reclaim this coveted title.

All the members of WEG 2014’s gold medal winning team from the Netherlands – current World Champion, Ijsbrand Chardon, and Koos de Ronde, also feature in the line-up. Six times Royal Windsor winner, Chardon remains fiercely competitive, combining almost unrivalled experience with cutting edge driving precision. From Germany comes a member of the silver medal winning team at WEG, Christoph Sandmann whose daughter, Anna – a groom for her father at WEG – will make her international debut driving a horse four-in-hand here.

A strong home team includes the legendary George Bowman senior – a serial Royal Windsor winner – and one of his sons, Barnaby. Among others, they are joined by the Bassett sisters, Karen and Pippa and leading light of the Devil’s Horsemen Stunt Team, Daniel Naprous, who represented GB at the World Cup Qualifier at the London International Horse Show at Olympia last Christmas.

Pony four-in-hand drivers from six nations will also compete in the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix in a CIA3*. From the Netherlands comes a 2015 World Pony Championships team gold medallist, Jan de Boer, while the home nation representative is Sara Howe – a member of GB’s 2015 bronze medal winning team.

Team Weber Takes Victory Lap at Kingdom of the Sun CDE before Leaving for Europe

Ocala, FL (March 23, 2016) – The Florida Horse Park of Ocala, Florida saw local horseman and 13-time U.S. National Four-in-Hand Champion Chester Weber take the victory lap in the third leg of the ‘Triple Crown of Driving,’ the Kingdom of the Sun CDE, on March 17-20. Weber posted the win over courses by one of Great Britain’s best 4* designers, Barry Hunter. The victory set the stage for Team Weber to next head to Europe, where Weber will be driving to defend his two-time consecutive winning title in London at The Royal Windsor CAI3*.

“I was very pleased with all of the horses and the potential they are showing, especially Amadeus on the wheel in the marathon phase. He was fantastic,” said Weber after his Kingdom of the Sun CDE win. With great attention to detail, Weber arranged his and Jane F. Clark’s team of bay KWPN geldings to maximize their potential, putting Amadeus and Boy W to the lead with wheel horses Boris W and Danzer in the dressage phase. For marathon, he relied on lead horses Asjemenou and Boy W, with Amadeus and Danzer in the wheel. Then wrapping up the competition in cones, Weber arranged his team to include Boy W and Amadeus in the lead, with Boris W and Danzer bringing home the wheel.

Team Weber soared penalty-free through Hunter’s marathon course, wresting a brief opening day lead away from Pennsylvania whip Allison Stroud and never looked back, adding just 4.44 penalties to the score on the third and final day’s cones phase. This led to Weber’s victory in the Kingdom of the Sun CDE 2* Horse Teams division, with a 169.04 score overall and nearly 20 points ahead of second-placed Stroud (181.43).

The Kingdom of the Sun CDE is a premier driving competition for the Florida Horse Park, and has served as both a Selection Trial for the World Singles Championships and a ‘warm-up’ for the World Equestrian Games. For the last two seasons, the competition has served as a springboard for Team Weber gearing up for The Royal Windsor Horse Show, where Weber received first place and personal congratulations from HRH Queen Elizabeth.

Team up with Team Weber and Team Clark as they continue their efforts to qualify for the 2016 World Four-in-Hand Championships in Breda this summer. Follow news, live posts, video and photo galleries, and preferred product reviews at www.chesterweber.com.

With brand new world-class competition on offer and birthday celebrations fit for a Queen, Royal Windsor Horse Show 2016 promises to be better than ever as exciting changes are announced for this year’s event which takes place from 11-15 May.

One of the new innovations for 2016 will be the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix upgrading to a CAIO4* World Cup Qualifier, a Nations Team competition for Carriage Driving. Nations can enter a team of up to three people with two of the team-mates’ best overall scores counted over the course of the three phases of Dressage, Marathon and Cones. The 4* status now means that drivers who gain World Cup points, can earn five bonus points towards the hotly contested FEI World Cup™ Driving Qualification for the 2016-2017 indoor World Cup season.

National Dressage will also be drawing in the best of British as the UK’s top riders will be invited to take part in a must-see class on Wednesday 11th May. This will be one of the last opportunities to watch the potential members of Team GBR compete their podium-worthy dressage routines on home soil ahead of the highly anticipated Rio Olympics in August.

Another welcomed change to the Horse Show this year is that due to the level of prestige in the competitions the total prize money for the Show has now reached £293,395.

In addition to the new and revamped classes, this year will see the celebrations for The Queen’s 90th Birthday taking place on the last four evenings of Royal Windsor Horse Show. Royal Redux: Chester Weber Claims Second Royal Windsor Horse Show Four-in-Hand Victory

London, England (May 20, 2015) – It was a royal redux at England’s Royal Windsor CAI3* as HRH Queen Elizabeth again congratulated Chester Weber, of Ocala, Florida, on his second consecutive victory in the four-in-hand division. The 11-time USEF National Champion and three-time World Equestrian Games Silver medalist returned to the 2015 Royal Windsor Horse Show to defend the title he won there last May.

Fresh off the Live Oak International CDE win in March in the US, Team Weber, comprised of the horses owned by Chester Weber and Jane Forbes Clark, headed to Europe and to the top of the leader boards at the Royal Windsor.

But this year’s competition was no repeat of last year’s handy finish for Team Weber. Living up to his moniker, ‘Mr. Dressage,’ Weber won the opening dressage phase with a score of 36.22, but unlike the year prior, this past week’s competition saw Team Weber’s strongest competitors very close on the scoreboard, with Boyd Exell just fractions of a point behind with a score of 36.57. With just a smidge of a lead, Team Weber had their work ahead of them.

“We had to fight hard for this one. We were in a tight race with Boyd after dressage, and had a costly knockdown in marathon,” Weber said about the tense second phase, which saw Team Weber drop to third position, while a tightly executed 95.64 effort by Exell moved him into the top spot after Saturday’s Marathon. But not for long – Team Weber was now more “driven” than ever.

“I couldn’t let myself dwell on that. I knew we had to focus on bringing our A game into Cones,” Weber said. “And it worked. The horses were amazing. They really stepped up. Everything I asked them for they gave me.”

Weber’s win at last year’s Royal Windsor had marked a coming full circle 18 years in the making since he competed in the pair driving in its stadium in 1996. So what did accepting a second round of royal congratulations feel like? “It was very, very special. And well earned. Not just for me, but for the entire team behind these horses,” said Weber.

As for Team Weber’s own international combined driving calendar, their ambitions are set on the CAI3*-H4 World Cup Qualifier, June 19-21, in Lahden, Germany. The team will head next to compete at Aachen where they enjoyed a record-breaking victory last year. “Aachen is under a different, indoor driving and jumping format this year,” Weber explained, “so it won’t have as much impact on our plans.”

Team Weber had a success plan laid out for 2014 which unfolded with a string of history-making victories that included the first American entry to win the Four-in-Hand at CAIO4* Aachen, an 11th USEF National Four-in-Hand Driving Championship, and an unprecedented record dressage phase score (30.89) for the sport at the Kingdom of the Sun CDE. Already their success formula for 2015 is coming to its fruition. Follow Team Weber on their 2015 European campaign at www.chesterweber.com and via Facebook.

Dermott Lennon Leaps to Victory on Last Day of Royal Windsor 2015

Dermott Lennon.

May 17 2015 – The fifth and final day of Royal Windsor Horse Show 2015 saw an unprecedented number of people walk through the Windsor gates for their last chance to watch the equestrian extravaganza in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. The crowds were treated to a thrilling finale in the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix with last year’s champion Chester Weber retaining his title while Ireland’s Dermott Lennon also made a victorious return to the show to claim the CS13* Alltech Grand Prix in front of pack.

SHOWJUMPING: LENNON’S VICTORIOUS RETURN TO WINDSOR

Having not competed at Royal Windsor Horse Show for 10 years, Irishman Dermott Lennon’s return resulted in him etching his name in the prestigious event’s history books by winning the Alltech Grand Prix for the Kingdom of Bahrain Trophy. Partnering the consistent Loughview Lou-Lou, he thrilled the crowd with the kind of performance expected of a former World Champion.

“I’d watched [Britain’s] Yazmin Pinchen go and she rode a great round,” said Dermott. “My main concern was getting over the planks, but once I’d done that I was able to go.”

His tactics paid off and he was able to pinch back three seconds, holding on to the lead over eventual second placed Robert Whitaker [Catwalk IV] for Britain.

“I always love to come to Britain and win,” Dermott joked. “It’s a great and famous show with classes for every type and shape of horse I think.”

Home rider Laura Renwick secured her second win of the week by claiming the remaining three-star international competition of the show. Riding Rembrandt Blue, Laura set such a pace that, despite collecting eight seconds in penalties, she still managed to hold a lead over France’s Michel Hecart [Toupie de la Roque].

The USA’s Emma Heise rounded off a week of strong results with a win in the Royal Windsor one-star international Grand Prix riding Viper Vrombautshoeve Z. Based in Warwickshire with Olympic Gold Medallists Laura Kraut (USA) and Nick Skelton (GBR), Emma, who bettered seven rivals in the jump-off, has enjoyed her time at the iconic venue.

“I really like it here,” she said. “It’s been so interesting seeing so many disciplines and competitions we just don’t get in the US.”

DRIVING: CHESTER WEBER WINS BACK TO BACK TITLES

In a dramatic finale to the Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix, last year’s horse four-in-hand winner, Chester Weber from the USA – in second place overnight – coupled professional nerve with outstanding driving skill to retain his title with a back-to-back win.

Second last to go in the cones phase, it looked for all the world as if he would produce the first double clear; however, going just over the allowed time, he picked up 0.18 penalty. In the winning position and ready to take up the challenge, Boyd Exell from Australia drove smoothly and steadily to just past the halfway point on the course. Here his left wheeler slipped on a tight turn, temporarily affecting the steering and losing time. When a ball dropped further on he had to push hard for home; the penalties he accrued dropped him 2.5 penalties behind Weber.

“I’m elated,” Weber remarked. “It’s such a privilege to drive at Royal Windsor and my horses have been outstanding. The course designer here [Christian Iseli from Austria] is the hardest in the world but I have a good record with his courses. I knew if I could go clear the pressure would be on.”

In the pony four-in-hand, Bram Chardon proved himself a champion right to the end. The only competitor to drive the cones course within the allowed time, he had just one ball down to add a win in this phase to his first places in dressage and cross-country, finishing 20 penalties ahead of Tinne Bax from Belgium. Two times gold medallist with this team of grey Welsh ponies, two of which were bred in this country, this is his second time competing – and winning – at Royal Windsor.

“My aim was to finish with a double clear,” he smiled. “But we have had a wonderful event.” His father, Ijsbrand Chardon, finished third in the horse four-in-hands.

SHOWING: PONIES SHOW THE WAY

Kinvara Garner
Kinvara Garner

It was ponies all the way on the final leg of the prestigious Royal Windsor Horse Show.

North-Wales based Kinvara Garner, 12, who was unable to compete last year because her father, Chief Steward Sebastian Garner, was taken ill, came back with vengeance. She took the coveted novice show pony title with the family’s home-produced 4-year-old Alonby Dauphin.

The show hunter pony went to another young lady on the verge of an exciting equestrian career. Alice Homer from Banbury, Oxon is only 11 but is already following in the footsteps of her famous showing family – her mother is Loraine Homer and her grandfather is the legendary showman David Tatlow. Having won her working hunter pony class aboard nursery stakes contender Lemington Nougat, she hot-footed it to another arena to win the 133cm class on Annandale Maria. Then she produced an electrifying performance in the Castle Arena to take her first Windsor Championship.

PONY CLUB MOUNTED GAMES: WIN FOR WALES

A fantastic fast-paced finale in the Daks Pony Club Mounted Games saw Wales vault to victory with England, who they had been battling it out at the top of the table all week, coming in a close second. As ever, the mounted games wowed the crowd with the five nations impressing the applauding audiences all week with their pace, agility and incredible skill in all of the races.
