German Day in Baborówko

30 May 2021 was the last day of Equestrian Festival Baborówko. 200 riders with 350 horses from 25 countries all over the world competed for a prize pool unparalleled in Polish eventing – over 90 000 EUR.

In the most important class of the show, the CCI4*-S for the prize of the patron of the event, Mr Roman Roszkiewicz, with a prize pool of 70 000 EUR, the leader after dressage and cross-country was Ingrid Klimke (GER) with SAP HALE BOB OLD. However, the rider had an unlucky but harmless fall in the CCI3*-S cross country, which made it unable for her to compete in the four-star jumping trial. The second and third place after two trials belonged to Michael Jung (GER) with FISCHERCHIPMUNK FRH and FISCHERWILD WAVE. The rider confirmed his fantastic shape and finished the jumping with two clear rounds to take the first and second place. Third went to Sandra Auffarth (GER) with LET’S DANCE 73.

“I am very pleased with of my horses, especially with FISCHERCHIPMUNK FRH and FISCHERWILD WAVE, which are in a great shape. We had some demanding conditions, but that’s just eventing,” said Michael Jung (GER). “It was a hard show, but shows like that are necessary, especially in this season, where we have to take advantage of every occasion to prepare for Tokyo. I’ve been to Baborówko two years ago. Now there are new great arenas. To achieve good results, we need good conditions and that’s what we have here.”

The CCI4*-S also determined the podium for this year’s Polish National Championships, for the third time in Baborówko. We witnessed a great performance by Paweł Spisak with Banderas. The rider finished the class as the best Polish athlete, and secured his 9th gold medal of the National Championships. Mateusz Kiempa defended his silver with Libertina, and bronze went to the home rider of Baborówko Equestrian Association, Paweł Warszawski with Lucinda Ex Ani 4.

“We are very glad that some of the best eventers decided to visit Baborówko. We’re happy that in these difficult times and after a year-long break we managed to safely carry out the event, taking advantage of the potential of our new and modernized infrastructure,” says Henryk Święcicki jr., the director of the show.

There was a change in the lead after the jumping for the CCI4*-L, for the trophy of Lotto. Fouaad Mirza (IND) was in the first and second place with SEIGNEUR MEDICOTT and DAJARA 4. However, he had faults in the jumping trial and so the win went to Aminda Ingulfson (SWE) with HOT CUP VH) after a clear round. Fouaad finished second and third.

In the CCI3*-S, for the trophy of Kuhn, the first three placings went to German riders. Michael Jung was victorious with KILCANDRA OCEAN POWER, second went to Hanna Knüppel riding GEKE EQUIGRIP’S LEVINIO, and third to Peter Thomsen with COOL CHARLY BLUE.

Lotte Palmgren (FIN) with GENIALE 11 took the lead after jumping in the CCI2*-S for the trophy of Concordia Grupa Generali, and kept her position in XC. Felix Etzel (GER) was second with PROMISING PETE TSF, and Esteban Benitez Valle (ESP) with ESCARA GP was third.

The CCI2*-YH for six-year-old horses, for the trophy of Kunowo Stables, ended with the win of Andreas Dibowski (GER) riding CRISTALLIK. Merel Blom (NED) with DENIM took second, and third went to Louise Romeike (SWE) with MADAME D’ ENGELBOURG Z.

The leaderboard of the CCI1*-Intro remained unchanged since Saturday – Jerome Robine (GER) kept his lead with COBY R, Merel Blom (NED) with THE BLACK SWAN was second, and Malin Petersen (SWE) went home with the third riding HULDA.

China, Thailand, and Poland Secure Tokyo 2020 Eventing Team Slots

China, Thailand, and Poland secured their equestrian team tickets to next summer’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at special Eventing qualifiers held in Saumur (FRA) and Baborówko (POL) over the weekend.

This will be a first-ever Olympic Eventing team slot for China and Thailand, although both have had individual starters at previous Olympics. The two nations finished second and third at the FEI designated Olympic qualifier held in Saumur (FRA) for Olympic Groups F and G, which covers Africa and the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Hong Kong finished fourth when only one of their three starters went through to the final Jumping phase.

Japan, already assured of a starting place on home ground next summer, were fractionally behind China after Saturday’s Pierre Michelet designed cross country test, but regained the lead they had established in the Dressage arena to take top spot by 6.1 penalties ahead of the Chinese. Team China, led by double Olympian Alex Hua Tian who finished eighth in Rio 2016, held on for second place and a Tokyo ticket ahead of Thailand, also now with a place logged on the 2020 startlist.

Hua Tian, who made his Olympic debut at the age of 18 at Beijing 2008, was bidding for individual success with the talented Don Geniro, but four faults in Jumping handed victory to the 1993 European champion, Frenchman Jean Lou Bigot with Aktion De Belheme.

Double Polish win on home soil

Pawel Spisak, already a four-time Olympian, led his team to victory on home turf at Baborówko to book Poland a place at next year’s Games. Riding his Rio 2016 horse Banderas, the 37-year-old also claimed the individual honours ahead of two-time Olympic champion, Germany’s Michael Jung with Fischerchipmunk FRH.

Both Belarus and Russia also fielded teams at Baborówko, venue for the Olympic Group C qualifier covering Africa and the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. However, when just two of the Belarussians and one Russian completed all three phases, the Poles were left untroubled at the top.

Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand are already gearing up for Tokyo, having secured Olympic qualification at last year’s FEI World Equestrian Games™. Japan, as host nation, is automatically qualified, but the win in Saumur shows that the home side will be right in the mix next summer.

While three team slots were nailed over the weekend, there are still spaces available for five more teams to make up the full quota of 15 Eventing teams for Tokyo. An additional 20 individual places are up for grabs via the FEI Olympic rankings to fill the overall quota of 65 starters.

Remaining opportunities for nations to qualify Eventing teams for Tokyo are at the Pan-American Games in Lima (PER) at the beginning of August and the FEI European Eventing Championships in Luhmühlen (GER) at the end of August, both of which have two slots available. Additionally, the highest ranked nation at the end of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup™ series 2019, which winds up at Boekelo (NED) in mid-October, will also book their ticket for next year’s Games.

The FEI system allows nations from each of the FEI Olympic Groups two opportunities to qualify, either at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2018 or at their designated regional qualifier. The FEI Olympic Groups for the Olympic qualification process are based on seven geographical regions: A – North Western Europe; B – South Western Europe; C – Central & Eastern Europe, Central Asia; D – North America; E – Central & South America; F – Africa & Middle East; G – South East Asia, Oceania.

Great Day for Polish Athletes in Baborówko

Baborówko, 25 May 2019 — Polish riders have shown to be in great form during the cross-country trials at Baborówko Equestrian Festival. The Polish team are the current leaders in the fight for a qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Paweł Spisak (POL) has kept the lead in the CCIO4*-L after the cross-country trial with Banderas. They were the only pair that finished the difficult test with almost 40 obstacles at the length of 5700 metres within the time allowed. Michael Jung (GER) is second for now with Fischerchipmunk FRH, and third position went to Jan Kamiński (POL) riding Jard.

The CCIO4*-L class doubles as qualifier for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The Polish team’s rivals Russia and Belarus have lost their chance due to the insufficient number of representatives (each team has to have three classified riders). Alexander Zelenko (BLR) was eliminated during dressage, and Hanna Nemtsaya (BLR) has withdrawn from the competition. The Russian team had three pairs during the class (each country was able to enter four), and Aleksandr Markov (RUS) was eliminated during cross-country.

In spite of the lack of competition, the Polish team cannot lose their focus. Mariusz Kleniuk (POL) with Winona has retired from finishing their ride in the cross-country, which means that the Polish team continues with only three riders remaining. Joanna Pawlak with Fantastic Frieda, Paweł Spisak with Banderas, and Paweł Warszawski with Aristo A-Z have to pass the vet check and finish the demanding showjumping course, which will surely stand a challenge for horses tired after the long cross country.

In the CCI4*-S, with the highest prize pool at the event (325 000 PLN), the current leader is Andreas Dibowski (GER) with FRH Butts Avedon. Andreas Ostholt (GER) is right behind him after cross country with Corvette 31, and third position is currently held by Michael Jung (GER) with Highlighter. The highest ranked Polish athlete for now is Mateusz Kiempa (POL) with Lassban Radovix (9th position).

The current best score after cross-country in the CCI3*-S belongs to Jan Kamiński (POL) with Senior, and Ksawery Śniegucki (POL) is second with Rarashek. Third place for now goes to Johan Lundin (SWE) riding Zuma.

The CCI2*-S class has ended, with no changes in the leaderboard. First place went to Vanessa Bolting (GER) with Ready To Go W, second was Leoni Kuhlmann (GER) with Hidalgo 179, and Julia Gillmaier (POL) with Red Sunrise 2 took home the third place.

The cross-country trial was the last one in the CCIYH2*-S, for six-year-old horses. Miloslav Prihoda Jr (CZE) won the class with the Polish-bred Eldorado, second place went to Sabrina Labes (GER) with Sparta’s Prince, and third went to Rebecca-Juana Gerken (GER) with Fame 227.

At the hardest and most demanding classes of the show, the CCIO4*-L, CCIO4*-S, and CCIO3*-S, The athletes will compete for the record-breaking prize pool (even bigger than last year’s record). Thanks to the support of the Patron of the event, Mr Roman Roszkiewicz. the collective prize pool in the international classes will reach 465 000 PLN. The CCIO4*-L the prize money will be as high as 85 000 PLN, 60 000 PLN of which will go to the three best teams in the class. The biggest prize is to be won in the CCI4*-S class, 100 000 PLN, with the collective prize pool in the class being 325 000 PLN.
