Katie Robinson and Amarillo Awarded Grand Amateur-Owner Championship

Katie Robinson and Amarillo.

Katie Robinson and Amarillo have won tricolors up and down the East Coast, but until Saturday there was one that neither of them had earned: a Devon Horse Show championship. That changed this weekend as Robinson claimed not only the Amateur-Owner Over 35 Hunter championship, but also Devon’s highest Amateur-Owner Hunter honor: the Grand Amateur-Owner championship title.

“It’s as special as it gets. For me and for this sport – this is it. This and the National [Horse Show],” Robinson said. “I’ve been showing here since my teenage years, and I’ve been reserve but never champion. This is my first time, and I’m really, really, really happy. I’m glad it was with Milo because he’s a good boy. He’s my steady guy.”

Robinson and Amarillo kicked off the division on Friday with two scores of 88, earning them back-to-back blue ribbons in the day’s over fences classes. Robinson then returned Saturday morning to earn two more identical scores, giving her and Amarillo the second place spot in the stake class and the blue ribbon victory in the handy.

“[The handy] is something that we’ve been really, really working a lot on, Andre [Dignelli] and Brady [Mitchell] and I,” Robinson said, referencing the team at Heritage Farm, with whom she trains.

“We practice over low jumps at home and just work on getting more comfortable with the turning and the changes. They’re hard; handies are hard. It really has paid off. We got lucky we were able to win it. That was great.

“We’ve also been working on just galloping and cantering and trying to jump jumps out of pace, which I really felt like I was doing particularly in the last class,” Robinson said in reference to her stake round. “I loved that class. I know I didn’t win it, but the round was fun. It was such a fun ride on both of my horses. They were great.”

Robinson’s second mount in the division, Tradewind, was also successful throughout both days, finishing second in the handy round on Saturday.

“I was a little nervous my first time in because they’re not old horses. They’ve not done a lot,” Robinson said of Amarillo and Tradewind, both 8. “They definitely brought their attention, and they jumped really, really well. They tried hard, and it was fun. I just had a really fun weekend. Andre and Brady have been so good to me. They have been really patient and worked really hard, and I really appreciate it.”

Finishing as the reserve champions in the Amateur-Owner Over 35 Hunters were Ellen Toon and Mirror Image.

In the Amateur-Owner 18-35 Hunters, the championship went to another first time champion, Taylor Willever and her mare, Whisper.

“I haven’t been champion at anything major yet,” Willever said. “I’ve been reserve like four times so it means a lot. It’s very awesome. Especially with [Whisper].”

This year marks Willever’s fourth year showing at Devon and second year showing with Whisper, an 8-year-old Holsteiner mare imported by Cindy Bohn of Heron Hills.

“We were trying other horses, and we just happened to come across a video online,” Willever, who trains with Troy Hendricks, her mother Joni Willever and her sister Hayley Willever said. “We hurried over [to Heron Hills] and tried her and rode her for about 10 minutes and then bought her the next day!”

Willever continued, “In the beginning, she was pretty jumper-y. She got really excited in the handies. She thought that they were quite fun. Over the past year and a half she’s totally settled in. Her jump has gotten way more hunter-y. She’s become really handy. She’s gotten more acclimated to the hunter jumps. She used to kind of look at them, but she’s totally okay with them now.”

More than okay, Willever and Whisper competed successfully in the Amateur-Owner 18-35 3’3″ Hunters throughout their first year together, receiving the reserve championship in the division at last year’s Devon Horse Show. This year, they made the move up to the 3’6″ division, and they have been champion at every horse show they have entered so far this year.

Finishing as reserve champions behind Willever and Whisper in the Amateur-Owner 18-35 Hunters were Stephanie Danhakl and Golden Rule. Danhakl also earned the Amateur-Owner 18-35 3’3″ Hunter championship aboard Enough Said. The reserve championship in the division went to Reid Patton and Sincere.

In the Amateur-Owner Over 35 3’3″ Hunter division the championship went to Caroline Moran and Bacardi, and the reserve championship was presented to Dorli Burke and Charming.

East Aurora, NY and Wellington, FL – June 12, 2013 – Katie Robinson of Deeridge Farms and her newest mount Sutton Place have continued their winning ways in the Adult Amateur Hunter division, this time capturing the championship tricolor at the I Love New York Horse Show in Lake Placid, NY. The pair won three over fences classes to capture the top honor in the 36-49 age group. Robinson also took home the reserve championship award in the Amateur-Owner 35 and Over Hunters with her longtime partner Rock Steady.

Just coming off of their Grand Adult Hunter Championship at the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Show, Robinson and Sutton Place once again had the winning ticket. Although Robinson has only been riding the five-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Valentino for a few short months, they are showcasing their instant chemistry in the ring. After earning good ribbons in the Pre-Green Hunters with trainer Brady Mitchell of Heritage Farm, Sutton Place was ready to win in the Adult Amateur Hunters.

On the first day, Robinson and Sutton Place claimed a blue ribbon over fences, and then returned to the ring on Saturday for two more victories to claim the Adult Amateur 36-49 Hunter Championship. “Sutton Place was a super star,” expressed Robinson. “He has really figured out his job, and it’s very exciting to have such a nice young horse. Every time he goes in the ring he wants to win. He’s so smart and he really gets it, so it’s very fun to take him to the shows.”

Robinson also competed in the Amateur-Owner 35 and Over Hunters with her second mount Rock Steady. The pair earned two second place ribbons over fences on Wednesday, and then won the under saddle and an over fences class on Thursday. Their beautiful rounds helped clinch the division’s reserve championship.

“I can always depend on Rock Steady,” noted Robinson. “He has a great rhythm and he loves to show. I always feel confident when I go in the ring with him because I know he is going to be perfect.”

Now Robinson will compete at Horse Shows by the Bay in Traverse City, MI, with Deeridge Farms before wrapping up the summer at the Hampton Classic and beginning to prepare for Indoors.

East Aurora, NY and Wellington, FL – April 3, 2013 – The 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival has come to an end and the riders of Deeridge Farms had a home run during the final week. The season brought the farm various championships and multiple ribbons every week and WEF 12 was no exception. Katie Robinson and Rock Steady continued to display their talents, as they rose to the top of the class in the Amateur Owner 35 & Over Hunters.

Rock Steady, who has been on a break since week 7, entered the ring on the first day of the division as if he had never left. On day one of the Amateur Owner 35 & Over Hunters, the two claimed a second place ribbon in their over fences class, and after putting down a flawless performance, nabbed the blue ribbon in the handy round.

Robinson and her steady mount then came back, to earn a blue ribbon over fences, and finished off the division with a second place in the under saddle. These ribbons led her to the division’s championship tricolor for the final week of circuit.

“Rock Steady was really good. I went into the handy round a little nervous, because an accident just happened, but I just took it slow and made some wider turns,” explained Robinson. “We are planning on going to Old Salem and Devon, and then will probably do the Lake Placid shows.”

Robinson and Deeridge Farms will continue to compete in Wellington during the spring circuit, before the horses and riders return home to New York.

The pair dominated the Amateur-Owner 35 & Over Hunters, clinching the championship honors, the High Score Amateur Award, and the opportunity to compete during the WCHR Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular under the lights in the International Ring.

Robinson posted the third score in the 90s for the week in the International Ring during the Amateur-Owner 35 & Over Hunters on Friday. Aboard Rock Steady, Robinson had a brilliant handy round, with an average score of 91. Robinson and ‘Rocky’ also had a wonderful first round, earning a second place ribbon. “We have a great relationship and I know him really well,” remarked Robinson. “He loves the handy classes and I do too, so it was really fun. I love this ring; it’s a lot of fun.”

Robinson and the 13-year-old Warmblood have a great relationship and are a team to be reckoned with. “I love riding him at the farm as much as at the horse shows, so trail rides are fun.”

The Amateur-Owners concluded on Saturday in the E. R. Mische Grand Hunter Ring, where Robinson and Rock Steady earned the championship in the Amateur-Owner 35 & Over Hunters. In addition to their placings on Friday, a second place ribbon in the stake class and the third place in the under saddle helped them claim the tricolor award.

“Rock Steady was super; he was really great in the International and he was ready to come and play in the other ring,” said Robinson. “WCHR week really is a special week. It’s so nice to be showcased and to get out in the big ring and to feel special. It makes you feel good, and it’s so much fun.”

Later that night, Robinson and Rock Steady earned the opportunity to compete WCHR Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular. They were honored with the High Score Amateur Award for their score of 91 in Friday’s handy class.

Robinson and Deeridge Farms will continue to compete throughout the 12 weeks of the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL.

This marked the first week of competition for the veteran duo at the prestigious event, proving that once again they are in top form for the upcoming season.

East Aurora – November 2, 2012 – Katie Robinson of Deeridge Farm scored another major victory with her veteran mount Rock Steady on October 24, 2012. The pair was in top form during the prestigious Washington International Horse Show, claiming the Amateur-Owner 36 & Over Hunter Championship.

Robinson and Rock Steady have been dominating the Amateur-Owner Hunter division all year, and their success continued during their most recent stop at the Washington International Horse Show. She piloted the talented gelding to wins in the under saddle class and the first over fences class. Their efforts were good enough to take home the championship title.

“This has been really fun,” commented Robinson. “I feel like I was fortunate enough to give him a couple of months off before Indoors. It has just been an awesome year, and Rock Steady always seems to rise to the occasion. Today I felt like the stake round was hands down the best round I have had on him, we had a light rub in the in-and-out, but other than that, I thought it was a great round — things were clicking. We just have a ball out there. If I could dream of the perfect horse, it would be him — perfect jump, best canter and a great guy.”

East Aurora, NY – November 14, 2011 – Katie Robinson of Deeridge Farm capped off an excellent 2011 show season at the Alltech National Horse Show, 128th Edition, held at the Alltech Arena in Lexington, KY, from November 2-6, 2011. After claiming the Amateur-Owner 36 and Over Hunter Championship at the 2011 Capital Challenge Horse Show, Robinson continued her winning ways aboard Rock Steady to win the division’s championship prize at the Alltech National Horse Show.

Robinson, of Bronxsville, NY, was very consistent with Rock Steady, winning the handy class and the under saddle class. Their wonderful effort earned them the Amateur-Owner 36 and Over Hunter Championship title.

“This is a great way to finish up the year,” said Robinson. “I love the ring, and I think Rock Steady did, too. It was big, the footing was great, the jumps were really pretty, and it was so much fun to be showing of there. My plan going into the handy was to be as prompt with the turns and as lively as possible. I’ve ridden him for just about a year, we had a great Florida, and we really clicked from the beginning. He’s my type, he just keeps galloping and he’s really fun.”

The Alltech National Horse Show marked the end of the 2011 show season for Robinson, but she will continue to compete with her family’s Deeridge Farm in 2012 during the prestigious Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL.
