Christian Ahlmann Master of Dinard

Out of 37 contestants in the Grand Prix CSI5* of the city of Dinard 2016, 15 managed to qualify for the jump off, but the German Christian Ahlmann, up to his reputation, clinches victory with Cornado II.

The jump off, very competitive, took place in front of fully packed grandstands and overexcited spectators. Since the design of the course did not allow the riders to cut short, the only solution to bring the time down was to turn immediately after landing from the fences. Second to go, the Belgian Jérôme Guéry chose to ask everything to his grey horse Papillon Z, and set the time at 42″73. Nobody could imagine this incredible performance could ever been beaten, but the German genius Christian Ahlmann, world n°2, associated to Cornado II, brings the time down to 42″72, by one hundred of a second, that will allow him to win this CSI5* of Dinard for his first visit and participation. “First of all, I have to admit that I am really impressed by the quality of the site and by the arena. To clear here, you need a very good and experienced horse, but the course was fun to ride. The fact that the public is so big makes a real difference although it puts more pressure on our shoulders.”

The Belgian rider had to do with the second place. “I miss this victory by a fraction of a second, but I am very pleased with this placing. I am very happy to be part of this competition with so many talented riders.”

The Irish Darragh Kenny, in great spirits since the beginning of the Jumping of Dinard, places 3rd, after clearing the course with Go Easy de Muze in a time of 43″25.”This show is fantastic; it is my second time here; my horse jumped incredible. I only had him for eight weeks; he already places 3rd twice in CSI5*.”

The first French, Timothée Anciaume, decided not to play the time, but to clear. His strategy was obviously right, since, associated to Kiamon, he places 6th behind the Belgian Peter Devos/Dream of India Greenfield (4th) and the Swedish Douglas Lindelow/Zacramento (5th).

Laura Renwick… Again!

Laura Renwick (GBR) and Rembrandt Blue. Photo: Pixels Events.

Unprecedented scenario for this edition of the Tropicana Derby of Dinard, since the British rider Laura Renwick signs her second consecutive win with Rembrandt Blue, her 10-year-old grey gelding.

From early in the afternoon, the public was crowding the alleys of the Val Porée stadium in order to watch this high-level event. They were 14 on the starting list, ready to take up the challenge of a 1060 meters long course, with 29 jumps, the horses facing unusual difficulties like water crossing, mounds, or an impressive hill slope followed by a double combination of verticals.

In front of fully packed grandstands, the British rider Laura Renwick, famous for being one of the fastest in the world, completes the only clear round of the class in a time of 165″41. With a large smile on her face, the rider said she was delighted with her horse who enjoys, just like her, that type of classes.

“I took him here only for this Derby; it was my target this week end. I am very pleased with the result. It is a unique and very demanding exercise for the horses, equivalent to several regular classes.”

The second place goes to the Italian Luca Maria Moneta, riding Neptune Brécourt, his 15-year-old French horse, who does not knock a single rail, but gets two penalty points for his time of 187″17. “I am very happy; the Derby is a new exercise for Neptune, with whom I rode all the big classes and championships. This is only his fourth Derby, after La Baule, Hickstead and Falsterbö. He seemed to enjoy it. It is always easy to have a rail down on a Derby. Neptune is a very rapid horse, but if he goes too fast, he may push a rail down, which is why I preferred to go for a clear round even if I got time penalties. To me, this second place is fantastic; it is my best result ever on that type of classes.”

In third position, the French Julien Epaillard, riding Sheriff de la Nutria LM, who signed the fastest time (162″24), but had unfortunately a rail down on the second last fence. “I am fully satisfied with Scheriff; he jumped well; he gave me everything. He placed 6th here last year. When you try to play the time, sometimes you pay for it towards the end of the course. After the n°19, I felt he was slightly tired. I had no information about Laura’s time; maybe I should have paid a little more attention over the two last fences, but today we gained more experience on that type of classes I really enjoy riding.”

Hats off to the Swiss Pius Schwizer/Chellatus R who complete the course with only 4 penalties, but in a very fast time of 167″29, as well as to the Italian Daniele Augusto Da Rios, who crosses the finish line with only 4 points in 170″20.

Laura Renwick and Her… Shooting Star

Laura Renwick (GBR)/Bintang II. Photo: Pixels Events.

In this Prix Suez, third class of the CSI 5*, 37 riders were on the starting list over a course designed by Jean-François Morand and his team. The British rider, Laura Renwick, one more time up to her reputation, clinches victory with Bintang III.

Only nine pairs were invited to compete in the jump off the clock in this Suez class, at 1m55. If the French rider Julien Epaillard and Quatrin de la Roque (Quick Star), signs the fastest time (46″59), he leaves a pole on the ground and is unfortunately kept away from the jump off. Second to go, the French Kevin Staut, who gave all he had with Elky Van Het Indihof HDC (Toulon), established himself in the lead of this very competitive final with a time of 48″12 that finally led only to a 2nd place. “It is not always easy to go among the first riders in the jump off. Even if Elky placed first in many classes, I seldom won at the jump off. She is an exceptional mare, but she has short strides, compare to other horses who gain ground more easily.”

The spectators, out of breath, started to dream of a French victory, but they did not count on the British rider, famous for being among the fastest riders in the world, Laura Renwick, associated to her Grand Prix horse, the well-named Bintang III, whose name, from Indonesian origins, means “Star”. Probably slightly favoured by her last position in the jump off, Laura and her 10 years old KWPN gelding pulled everything together by clearing the course in a winning time of 47″01. With a big smile on her face, the rider said, “Dinard is an incredible show for me; last year I won the Derby here. Bintang loves this show ground; yesterday he placed 5th in the opening class, and the design of the jump off suited him perfectly today. He has a very big stride, and even with the speed, he remains very careful.” Laura admitted she had been lucky to find the right distance on the last vertical, without having to slow down. Bintang will be among the contesters in the Grand Prix of the city of Dinard on Sunday at 2.30pm.

In 3rd position, the Swedish rider Douglas Lindelow, associated to Zacramento, who cleared the course in 48″74. The rider said he was delighted with this horse he discovered only four months ago, when his owner and friend bought him. “He is a super athlete; he has all the qualities to be successful at the highest level. I am very confident about our future.”

Luca Maria Moneta, Winning Time…

Luca Maria Moneta (ITA)/Connery, winners of the Prix Alvalle. Photo: Pixels Events.

For this introduction to the CSI5*, the grand stands were already almost packed with an enthusiastic public, eager to support the best riders in the world.

In this opening class in two phases, over fences at 1m45, sponsored by Alvalle, the 36 pairs on the starting list had clear the first part within the time limit, and, immediately after the n°6, complete the course as fast as possible until the finish line, without knocking a single pole, of course.

Some of the riders chose to show the site to their horses, others clearly decided to play the game, and do everything possible to be on the podium. While 16 riders cleared the course, the Italian Luca Maria Moneta clinches victory with his 13-year-old Westphalian gelding, Connery. Second last to go, he completes the second phase in a time of 31″99. “I am very happy about my horse; I was just a little faster than everybody else, and it was good enough to win this class. Connery and I form a very strong pair; we know each other very well. I rode many classes with him. When I saw the leader was quite fast, I decided to go for it. I’d rather try to win and have a rail down, then clear the course and not be placed. My horse gave everything he had.” Friday, Connery will be in the speed class sponsored by the Conseil départemental d’Ille et Vilaine at about 11.45am.

The American rider Beezie Madden, associated to Breitling LS, was in the lead since the beginning of the class with a time of 32″47. She finally had to do with 2nd place. Very pleased with her 10-year-old horse, she said she would not have gone any faster even knowing that the Italian rider would bring her time down. “For me, this is a very encouraging start to the competition.”

In 3rd place, the French rider Jérôme Hurel, riding Urano, clears the second phase in a time of 32″57. “It is the beginning of the competition. I am pleased with Urano; he did the job very well. Tomorrow, he will be in the speed class at 1m45.”

International Jumping of Dinard CSI5*

From 28 to 31 July, for the 2016 edition of the International Jumping of Dinard, the mythical Val Porée stadium, entirely adorned with pink, will welcome 338 horses and 162 riders from 22 nations.

Days before the Rio Olympic Games kick off, while some of the best riders of the show jumping planet will finalize their preparation in the CSI 5*, highest level of competition in the discipline, the pairs involved in the CSI 1*, CSI 2* and CSI YH (reserved to 7 year-old horses) will be privileged to compete in exceptional conditions.

To conform to the International Equestrian Federation requirements, like in any competition at this level, today afternoon, all the horses were examined by a veterinarian, in order to confirm their health condition before the competition starts.

Danièle Mars, President of Sport Concept, at the helm of the International Jumping of Dinard, said she was very pleased with the weather forecast, ideal for horses and riders, and with the ultimate preparations. “The site is gorgeous, entirely decorated in pink colour, and generously flowered with petunias and hydrangeas. We are fully ready to start the competition and welcome the public, which we hope will be as large and enthusiastic as the precedent years.”

Thursday, seven classes are on the program. From 9.30 am onwards, the CSI 2*riders will confront for the first time on the main grass arena, while the best riders in the world, who take part in the CSI 5*, among which the French Olympic Team, will be on for the first time at 4pm.

Bertram Allen with Molly Malone V. Photo Credit: Pixels events.

“To each achievement its own crown” – this slogan refers to the high level athletes who became the Rolex Testimonies. This quote could well be linked to the International Jumping of Dinard, temple of excellence of show jumping, from 28 to 31 July.

Partner of more than 150 cultural and sport events, Rolex has been involved in equestrian sports since 1957. Quite naturally, the Swiss watchmaker chose to append its crown to the biggest shows in the world.

For the 2nd consecutive year, Rolex is a partner of the International Jumping of Dinard, sole French competition in its calendar. For its 105th edition, the CSI5* held in Brittany will showcase top level sports confrontations, welcome about twenty nations, 47 riders and more than a hundred horses, two weeks away from the Rio Olympic Games.

Performances, precision, prestige are the strong values shared by Rolex and the organisers of the International Jumping of Dinard.

Danièle Mars, President of the CSI 5* of Dinard: “We are once again delighted and proud to number Rolex among our partners. Rolex and the International Jumping of Dinard share history and close values. Our event could not be associated to another prestigious watchmaker; this has always been an evidence for me.”
